Agatha jay yes I am well aware of that 'phenomenon' which is not specific to any one group. I think it is sad when any child is hurt by a misinterpreted parent. I think in the case of Eugene that his dad thought he was doing the best he could by his kids and meant nothing ill or cold to them at all.
Indeed - Eugene spends a couple of decades thinking his dad didn't care all that much, only to realize how much his father was yearning to embrace the love of his child. This episode, along with series of how much parents sacrificed for their kids, evoke some of the most emotive reactions. Great job BuzzFeed 👍💛
A.C. Walker ahw dont worry dont be sorry. Thanks for sharing your story i hope you live a happy life even without your father around as much as you'd like. ;)
You can totally see how the dads influenced how they style themselves. Eugene in suits, Ned in sweaters, Keith in polos and Zach.. he does what he does lmao
Something that hit with Eugenes dad is when he mentioned that he did the sperm tests, "like you try guys did". The entire part with his dad was emotional but that was also hitting hard, because that meant either Eugene talks to his dad about what the try guys are doing, or his dad watches the episodes himself to see what his son is doing.
catgirl418 That's the same with all asian parents. They don't like explaining their deeper stories with their kids. I don't know very much about how my parents got here to Australia, all i know really is that my mum got here in 1982
Megan Calimbayan So true. Most of my parents stories are about how poor they were growing up and then relates to how my brother and I have to work hard and make money to support our family back in the Philippines.
I don't think it would be easy to be any immigrants child. The hardships the parents have to face are amazing and heartbreaking. To support family they have to continuously work which often times results in never being able to see your child, often leading the child to think of their absence as neglect, which is reasonable. Even though they had a crappy relationship, you definitely have to have respect for Eugene and his father. They both turned out to be pretty fine men who have worked through some pretty difficult hardships.
Naama Benamy maybe it's a foreshadowing of how the try guys will act in the future. But hopefully I'm wrong and maybe Eugene will be more sentimental and open with his kids.
It’s sad that Eugene did not know very much about his dad. At least he can fix that now...if he wants to. Some people never want to, or it is too late.
Eugene: "I think he was happier before he became a dad." How did your life change once you had children? Jae: _"I was so happy."_ Bruh when I tell you I cried
same. I was like "why did a show a picture of Ned with his son instead of his dad?" I never questioned further because I thought they were letting us know Ned's a dad lol
Dressed as their dads, Ned's still the preppy one, Eugene's still the elegant one, Keith's still the nerdy one and Zac's still the goofy pop-culture fanatic. And they all look like their dads but BOY is Ned a carbon copy of his dad.
When Eugene's dad said, "I was so happy" in response to "how did your life change once you were a dad?" I just lost it. My gosh I loved the whole video but if you just had all the clips of Eugene and his dad together, this would be the more tear-jerking video ever.
Agreed! I literally feel that Eugene is the everything in all the shows. He resonates massive strength and heart vibes with the most interesting viewpoints opposed to the rest. It would be neat to hear and see more of Eugene honestly.
Notice how when they meet their dads Eugene doesn't get a hug but a handshake. How his father doesn't talk about his past personally but on camera and it genuinely suprises and hurts eugene. My heart hurts at this man. 😢😢
@@glittermafia5759 he probably kept blaming his dad for everything he never liked while growing up so he never made any effort connecting with him and now his father told him how precious his children are to him after Eugene in his prior interview expressed how he hated his dad, he actually looked a mix of sad, guilty, embarassed and awkward.
@@glittermafia5759 That's true but you also have to consider how it's the parent's job to connect to their children. I guess Eugene should make an effort in the present, but the problems started when his father only showed Eugene one side of the role as a parent. Sorry if I typed a lot lol. It's just that I relate to this and wanted to share my thoughts.
@@romam.3032 A child should meet their parents half way. Maybe his parents tried talking to him but, the resentment Eugene felt could have blocked it. Now that hes growing older Eugene is realizing who his father is and not just this parental figure.
i think being a parent is hard. theres no perfect parent and theres always going to be something youre doing wrong. lol im a smol child but i always try to do my best to understand where they come from at least.... i try to
Seeing the relationship between Eugene and his dad reminds me about how Asian raise their kids. They show their love to their kids in a different way...not as open up as Western people I guess. That's why it's kind of awkward for us to say "I love you" or something like that to our parents. Well, Eugene and his dad deserves a big hug
coming from immigrant parents, i feel this way too. not a lot of emotional expression, not many I love you's. A lot of secrets as well that you don't find out about until later in life.
I don’t even think it’s just Asian families, I’m from England and my dad has pretty much never outwardly shown any affection for me, yet my mum is the polar opposite..
Same. You can tell there is a lot of unresolved stuff there. When his dad spoke about being older though, it gave me hope. Maybe they can start talking a bit more about the past and learn some things about each other. My parents are the same way, the older they get the more willing they are to share, because they are more aware of their mortality. It's a beautiful and sad thing.
If you could see before they revealed the photos Eugene and his father shook hands unlike the other try guys that hugged their fathers. I felt sad when I saw that because with that you can see the type of relationship they have.
Man i love Eugene, not because he is attractive or anything but because everyone thinks that because he is attractive that he has everything or is happy. You can tell he seems to be very unhappy with himself or very insecure and it's relatable, I'm glad he did this video with his dad though.
I felt SO sad for Eugene. The way he reacts to EVERYTHING his dad says, I mean, to have so many of his preconceived notions shattered like that! It's just kinda heartbreaking really
I completely relate to Eugene coming from an Asian mom and seeing how my white father embraced and acted exactly like how asian parents raise their kids. It's show no emotions, speak flatly and to the point, have zero relationship with either parent so you basically feel alienated your entire life...I'm not surprised Eugene felt his dad looked happier prior to having children; I feel the same with my own father. Growing up with such a strict asian operating atmosphere the kids don't get a close relationship so both parents are viewed as disciplinary figures, there's extremely high pressure to always excell higher than any other person or you are spoken and treated as a disappointment and failure. As an adult watching this part regarding Eugene and his reactions I myself was having a mini hyperventilating fit stressed things would go south in the line of questioning. But to see how chill yet still detached his dad seemed to speak I now realize even the asian parents have pressures of their own through the culture that traps them from showing emotions. 🤔 I feel this is the same reason Eugene doesn't speak highly of "liking" children yet once he's in front of them he's amazing around them! 👏 I myself reacted and thought very negatively towards children before I was a parent yet ironically I melt every time they are around me, squashed my fears I would be a cold parent once and for all. Everything I didn't like in my lack of relationship with my parents I made sure to shower on my own every chance I get. So I think that overcompensation behavior makes my kiddo think I'm a worry wart, emotionally clingy, helicopter parent for sure. If Eugene decides to be a parent one day, he's going to shine massive love and affection in a way that he never knew existed. Also, he won't have to worry about being the parent he wasn't fond of seeing in his own dad, I keep seeing how much he glows when he is with kids in general as much as he denies it.
It’s weird how distant Eugene and his father are. But that’s cute when they talked about his sex-life, it was a rEAL moment. Not that every other thing wasn’t, but, that part legit looked like they forgot there were any cameras.
I couldn't get over it! The face! voice! mannerisms! (and apparently personality too, according to ned!) it's like he's a reincarnation of his father except... his father's still alive... ok I'll stop rambling now.
rewatching these videos make me realize how much i miss the try guys before all the drama with ned, i spent my teenage years watching them and now that tts different its rlly sad... but i support the new tryguys!
I thought Eugene's was actually the happiest. Out of all of them, his interactions with his dad made me smile the most because you can clearly see them working toward a better and more open relationship and coming out of their comfort zone because they love each other and want to be better. Most people at their age wouldn't work to improve their relationship and just accept how good or bad is. To see them both open up to each other despite what they've been conditioned to do both culturally and personally was great.
could you imagine how funny it would have been if it wasn't his mom and it was just some other asian woman his dad met in texas before her and never said anything.
As an Asian, when I watched Eugene and his dad, it kind of made me sad because I could see their kind of relationship being very common among other Asians and it sucks that because of traditional discipline and strictness we distance ourselves from our family members.
Kira Swan my mom and I are really close now. She's becoming more trusting and becoming less strict. Yes it sucked because of strictness and my attitude during high school
Kira Swan Please you're overthinking. It's normal for most East Asians to greet parents like that. Hugging is not very Asian to begin with. I don't hug with my parents, but I love them and they know it because I show respect to them.
i'm not talking about how he greeted his dad, i'm talking about the fact that he knew so little about his father's past and you can tell he was genuinely shocked by what his dad told him. the fact that there's so much he doesn't know shows that he and his dad aren't on the closest of terms and there is a lot of stuff that isn't cleared up.
Kira Swan yeah it's true, I see the exact relationship Eugene had with his dad when he was young happening with me right now. And we never hug or say we love each other (just thinking about it makes me shudder) bc ugh that would be SO freaking awkward you don't even know
I feel so much for Eugene and his dad's relationship because I know that so many kids in China have parents that work far away and non-stop to provide for the kids, and only see them a few times a year. Many kids are raised by their grandparents because of this, they don't have good relationships with their parents.
goldenbluebunny agreed! she looked so pretty in that picture she kind of looks like a Kpop star!^^ I'm sure she is still as pretty as when that picture was taken! ^^
goldenbluebunny I knew she had to be a stunner because she still looks amazing (she was in a few videos with Eugene). Its no wonder Eugene and his sisters are so good looking.
I hope so too, but it really wasn't Eugenes responsibility to figure out his father when he was younger. It is hard enough to figure out yourself when you are young
I agree / Jana. Clearly the dad and the family kept a lot of secrets/ info hidden. They didn't talk about a lot of stuff. When someone doesn't say anyhting, it's hard to NOT misunderstand.
Eugene growing up in the states doesn’t realize the cultural differences, the way they lived culturally in Korea and Asian cultures in general is so different. The power distance, communication, etc... even if it’s not Eugene’s job to understand his dad. I feel like it is his job to understand that his dad didn’t grow up the way he did and that his dad has spent his whole life being and growing up a certain way.
Eugene and his Dad have a lot of years to get to know each other better. And many times we don't understand our parent's actions until we're adults or when we become parents ourselves.

EXACTLY.. SUCH FEELS!
I KNOW
we're getting old. Nothing to hide... this Korean father is deeper than the ocean. Surely it was not easy to be his son.

I am super interested in Eugene's dad now!
Every single one of these dads is a dad stereotype:
- The distant one
- The competitive one
- The one with the puns
- The Jewish dad
Naama Benamy i love this comment
Naama Benamy maybe it's a foreshadowing of how the try guys will act in the future. But hopefully I'm wrong and maybe Eugene will be more sentimental and open with his kids.

Notice how when they meet their dads Eugene doesn't get a hug but a handshake. How his father doesn't talk about his past personally but on camera and it genuinely suprises and hurts eugene. My heart hurts at this man. 😢😢
Sounds like eugene never bothered asking his dad any questions. He said he hated his dad when he was young.
Agreed!
coming from immigrant parents, i feel this way too. not a lot of emotional expression, not many I love you's. A lot of secrets as well that you don't find out about until later in life.
Its true! I nvr saying i love you to my dad too but i do love him!!!

Eugene and his dad made me so emotional in this video
Yup they always do....
Not really an unresolved thing, mostly a korean dad thing.

You’re heckin right. Children and parents are very different but there’s always some similarities they’ll bond over.

rewatching these videos make me realize how much i miss the try guys before all the drama with ned, i spent my teenage years watching them and now that tts different its rlly sad... but i support the new tryguys!
To see them both open up to each other despite what they've been conditioned to do both culturally and personally was great.
omg, Eugene's mother is GORGEOUS...wow.
imogenbegins defo
imogenbegins exactly what I thought
Agree
could you imagine how funny it would have been if it wasn't his mom and it was just some other asian woman his dad met in texas before her and never said anything.
Now I know where did he get the good look , his father was hot his mother was flawless I mean come on I littrely look like a potato 😂😂😂😂
But it's weird because my family's Asian and don't act like a traditional Asian family. My family is very close to each other and we do hugs, etc.
Eugene is Korean, though.
The more Eugene make try guys videos with his dad, the more family secrets he knows

It seems Eugene misunderstands his dad a lot. I hope they communicate better.
@@sparklinglemon-limepop8442 I don’t think they talked at all he said he worked a lot he’s probably going off what his mom told him
Eugene growing up in the states doesn’t realize the cultural differences, the way they lived culturally in Korea and Asian cultures in general is so different.
