When my parents found out I was attracted to men before I transitioned, the next day my dad took me to conversion therapy. That was over 20 years ago. Suffice it to say it didn't work, but now after I transitioned he calls me by my chosen name and our relationship is stronger than ever. Sometimes it takes time for Asian parents to come around.

I'm gay and genderqueer and come from a very Mormon family, where just that sort of thing was passive aggressively supportive. I was closeted for a long time and then came out and said point blank to my mother "this is my line, you either love me or lose me" and she just... Avoided it...
Eventually I got the courage to go to Pride and she decided to come. Idk what it was about Pride that changed her mind so drastically, but since then she has come to me and asked questions and got included in events I was doing. She still doesn't quite get all of it, but she's trying, she's warmed up to it at the very least.
She actually even fought a homophobic old lady at church, which was pretty funny.

I’m from a Mormon family too. My mum is super liberal and chill as hell. It’s my grandma that’s a different level. It’s obvious she knows I’m ace-pan but we basically never talk about relationships/dating. My mum said that if she does ever ask I should just be honest as she did the asking.

i put off seeing this video for the longest time bc while i absolutely love eugene, the art of drag, and eugene's budding/continuingly wholesome relationship with his father, i was apprehensive to seeing his reaction because of my experience with korean parents and older korean males--it can be really hurtful sometimes when the culture you're so proud of continues to stigmatize the things you value due to its homogenous and conservative society and i was worried that jae wouldn't be the most receptive drag show audience and that would shatter my image of him being a decent paternal figure (an image that is v hard to create in my head)
i'm incredibly happy to see that my fear was for nothing and that eugene's father was openly accepting 😊😊😊happy for you eugene

Honestly, I'm still scared to say a word about being trans to my parents, to a point I'm STILL trying to pretend to be their daughter. They don't realize I'm a boy. I just "like short hair, because long hair is harder to take care of." I don't wear dresses and skirts often because "I'm more used to playing soccer and stuff where those are in the way or don't work." I don't wear makeup because it's "expensive, takes a long time, and is annoying to take off." They don't know it's because I don't want to be a girl. Sometimes I do want to dress up like that, but for me, it's crossdressing. And the sad thing is? I'm terrified to the point that I plan to move six hours out of state, with my "best friend" that they have no clue is not only my best friend but also the love of my life, and either on my way out the door with letters I write or sending a letter once I'm six hours away, THEN is when I'll say, "Um, yeah, your firstborn and only daughter? Yeeeaahhh... She's a he, and he's more into men, but has a girlfriend he cherishes that you guys don't know anything about, because he's so scared you'll reject and disown him." And the worst part is that this video didn't bring much hope to me. Because I am in a poly relationship, and one of the guys in it was born and raised in Taiwan, but his parents were STILL absolutely rejecting of him and any 'less than masculine' activity. He has scars from being beaten by his father for failing in P.E. and even being SLIGHTLY artistically inclined. He hid a sketchbook as if it were the crown jewels. Yeah, the country in general may have been one of the first to legalize gay marriage, but that doesn't mean EVERYONE automatically supports it and accepts that lifestyle. And when it goes badly, it can go VERY badly. I hear a lot of stories intended to give hope and strength and encourage, but sometimes? It just doesn't go that way. And I've seen too much of that to feel any real hope my family won't be the same. So, all in all, I'm really glad for you being lucky enough that it turned out well, Eugene. I just wish I had hope that my family would be the same, and that I didn't have to hide my true self in reality, and only let it out when I'm online. It truly is a world where you can be anyone. And as long as I'm anonymous to them, I'm just surviving any way I can, to be myself wherever I can. One day, I wish I could be as confident as you, Eugene.
Wow, this is sad. If you do finally tell them I hope it goes well enough for you. If it doesn't then find others in the LGBTQ community to surround yourself with. Remember that "family" isn't always the ones you were born into.

I come from an extremely Catholic background. So when I was starting to realize I was gay, I didn't tell my parents for quite some time since they're Latino and Catholic. I told my big brother Tomas first because he's my brother and I knew he'd still love me no matter what. When the time came and I had the strength to tell them, they thankfully took it well. My dad is a huge Ricky Martin fan, so that helped a lot. He was the one I was the most worried about.
When same-sex marriage became legal here in PR he called me and was super happy that I could marry the man of my dreams. He sounded more excited than I was. Since then, we now have the tradition of going to Pride together with Tomas. 🇵🇷🌈

I think you're correct. He has a quiet-ish personality. I do think it wasn't 100% his type of entertainment, but I think he appreciated it a lot n wouldn't hate going again. Kim Chi's background of Graphic Design definitely comes through in her drag aesthetic. That is some serious artistic talent. I'd love to see more art from Kim. I know she'd rock as a painter and a sculptor. And I'd definitely buy some of her pieces.
