Heck of a game. We held them on so many fourth downs during the game and twice they had 1st and goal from inside our 4 and didn't score. Vic Koegel was hurt and couldn't play. Arnie Jones took his place and had over 20 tackles, I had about 17-18 and Randy Gradishar had 14-15. The 3 of us were named the ABC players of the game. Always so nice to beat Michigan, especially when it ruins their perfect season.
I grew up in C-bus (Grandview) and was 13 in '72. You guys were heros among the kids in our neighborhood. We'd sometimes peddle our bikes over and hang around the stadium on game day. We never got in, but sometimes we got to see a little bit of the game by looking through the fence in the south end. South stands was so much smaller back then and we could see maybe 1/3rd of the field, and that was better than nothing. Good times.
@ Rick Middleton I remember you. You and Gradishar were outstanding. I'm a Michigan fan, but the Buckeyes are always great to watch I was 10 years old here. Back then there was only 1 televised game per year, that's it!
At 6:00 the tape starts to fall apart, clogging two of the four video heads. You can see the dropout compensator substitute the previous line again and again until the next head enters the tape. Playback was on an AMPEX AVR-1 with a digital DOC.
At the beginning of this telecast, they mention that, in 1972, it had been 50 years since the Ohio Stadium dedication game was played back in 1922. In 2 more years, it'll be another 50 years since the playing of 'The Game' in 1972. So, Ohio Stadium will officially be 100 years old. For those of us that watched 'The Game' in 1972, it's hard to believe that almost 50 years has passed.
I'm watching this in 2024, so it's been 52 years since that '72 game, a longer span of time than between that game and the first season in the 'Shoe. Hard to believe. I remember the '72 game, very well. The 1920s seemed ancient to us then, no doubt like the '70s seem to young people now. 😄
I ran track on that cinder track back in the 70's. They used to have the Junior Olympics there in the Shoe in the summer. I actually ran against Archie Griffin back then. Later we were on the same team ▬ Eastmoor. I also, actually, went to Ohio State University Elementary School. Up until 1968 they had a K-12 School.
The track was all weather surfaced in 1964. First year for the all weather track. First year for the 220yrd dash to start on the turn instead of from outside of open end of the shoe. Before that the 220 was run on a straightaway.
I was in TBDBITL in 1972 (F9, band members will know) and was standing on the north goal line waiting for halftime. I had a better view of Franklin's fumble than some of the players on the field. I still don't know why he didn't try to pick up the ball & advance it as it was 4th down. It got me a free trip to the Rose Bowl so I would like to formally thank Dennis 45 years later for the win!
Interesting. Yes, especially in those days, a lot was riding on that game. Win or the season was over. Too bad the '73 Rose Bowl was such a disaster, but at least they got some payback in '74. I worked for years with someone who was in TBDBITL in '75 - '78. Although three of the four were loses, they got to go to a different bowl every year, ending with the infamous '78 Gator. He said he didn't see the incident at the end of the game and didn't even hear rumors about what happened until they were on the bus.
4:55 Bud Wilkerson corrected Chris Schenkel. Chris thought the quarterback was sacked when in fact the exchange between the center and quarterback went awry.
7:17 I'm surprised that spike by Van Decree #88 didn't draw a penalty. It would today. If I recall, Neal Colzie spiked the ball in the Rose Bowl back in the 70's and he got flagged for it.
Wasn't Fred Pagac the def. coordinator for OSU in 1996? I Doug Plank was the guy who they named the 46 DEFENSE by the Chicago Bears? Thanks for the archives.
Its a shame so many buckeye fans nowadays dont care about things like this. Tragic. I bought my pops an autographed Archie Griffin helmet for Christmas last yr...
Archie Griffin is amazing. Not a better ambassador for Ohio State than Archie. Years ago, I had a picture taken with him and he autographed a book for me. A true gentleman, Archie takes the time to accomodate the fans.
How bad has that school up north been? Since 2000 they won 3 games Since 2000 the Browns had beaten the Steelers 8 times with a tie .... How has this gotten worse than Browns Steelers?
@Mike Pordan November 30 2019 rematch, ohio state has a journeyman quarterback justin field, Michigan has a NFL top 4 rounds pick quarterback shea Patterson, ohio state get a black eye in 2019 love watching woody hayes Ohio state football teams
Hey Bo maybe kick the fg on 4th down.1972,73,74,75 UofM had better teams and they choked each game away! 1973 the Infamous 10-10 tie Michigan got shafted but your fg kicker Lantry has to make the kick he didn't! Great Documentary on this rivalry and the 1973 game called 'Tiebreaker' YT has it fabulous documentary.
"Tiebreaker" has some serious revisionist (made up) history. The players behaved as though voting a team to the Rose Bowl came out of nowhere. Actually the Big Ten ADs voted on it's participant in said game every year from 1966-1974. The vote was often a formality ('68 when Ohio dominated and '71 when Michigan did) And maybe Michigan had a strong case based on history, but the vote was old hat, and s/have been expected, WHOEVER won.

Rick Middleton +++ Thanks for sharing about the game Rick. The old man WW would been proud
Yes, he played for Saints and Chargers.
Good to see you here Rick Middleton!

Thats what I thought too...but it clogged 3 of the 4 video heads....how did you miss that?
The next year it was Archie and Pete Johnson ..... WOW
Original dynamic duo
At 0:23 you see the old scoreboard that was there for years and years. I wonder if it's on display anywhere, I hope they didn't throw it away.

Archie wrestled also. Beast.

I ran against Archie too on that track...I beat him by 7 seconds on the 40 yard dash!!

It was only a 13 game win streak...

Look at that old cinder track at 4:30.
I worked out on that track next year. History was not made.

Michigan should have won this game. Franklin played terrible in clutch situations.
poor coaching by MICHIGAN - bo worst coaching job.

Convenient loss of video quality to mask Michigan's clear crossing of the goal line in the 4th quarter.
