Why the hate? Because people wanted a performance and style beast that cost the same as a GT86 A hater always starts off being unrealistic You cant expect a luxury car (Supra is a reskinned BMW Z) to cost the same as a GT86 And honestly for what you get its pretty affordable even though its way more expensive than a GT86

It's not underappreciated, it's appreciated exactly as much as it deserves. Noone wanted a badge engineered bmw convertible as the successor to the mark IV.
2021 and up Supra real numbers are, 388 hp to the wheels, 447 to the crank 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds, quarter mile in 12.1 seconds. It’s faster than The Mach 1, C7 corvette and so many other sports cars. This car hits mid 11 seconds with just the tires being change. Down pipe and a tune has this cars hitting the 550hp (reliable) broke haters who can’t afford this car always have something to say 😂
Its the fact that BMW engineered 90% of the car and its not a Toyota that gets me. BMW ranks at the bottom of the list on reliability and top of the list on cost of maintenance and repair.
BMW can make extremely reliable cars and their inline 6 cylinder engines are second to none. They choose not to make reliable cars because they make more money on parts and maintenance than they do on the sale of the actual vehicle.

Lovely to Drive but the maintenance is ridiculous. Example...my wife's latest bought new started leaking oil heavily at 48,000 miles. Now, as a BMW enthusiast, I was fully aware of all the oil leaking, electronics issues, plastic parts under hood the crack and break, headliner/a-b pillar interior coverings that fall apart, motor mounts that wear out (What???)...yes, they wear out and the engine actually will sink slightly which causes issues. Back to the topic, Toyota guys do not want a heavy maintenance demanded engine (call it unreliable). Just my 2 cents
People have poor memories. The Supra 30 years ago was not appreciated. In fact, the more under appreciated it is now, the more desirable it will be in a couple decades.

Why would I buy a BMW from Toyota? It's practically the same as buying a Subaru BRZ from Toyota. In my eyes the engine dictates the identity of the vehicle, its the heart of its identity.
Yes, you end up with the worst of both brands... bmw (lack of) reliability without the the beautiful interior or brand prestige... Toyota meh interior and brand without the reliability. Booo
Subarus BRZ is more Toyota than the BMW Supra. The 86 was designed by a Toyota engineer using some Subie parts and Toyota running gear. Roman, here's my thought, the people who asked for a Supra aren't happy with the Supra. However the people that want a 2 door sport coupe are perfectly happy and appreciative of it. My reasoning behind this is, if you were at a restaurant, asked for a Medium-rare T-bone steak, and the waiter brought you a medium sirloin, would you appreciate it? The issue is, this isn't a Supra. It shouldn't have the Supra nameplate... You don't see Nissan partnering with Audi to make the GT-R? All that happened was that the gtr went from a sportscar to a supercar while the Z went from a gt to a sportscar. Same thing happened to the mk5 since that same shift had happened to the Z. So from the get go toyo wasn't even planning on ever putting the mk5 against the GTR since that would be a massive lead over what they put the last 2 gens against the Z(mk3 was also going against the Z aswell). They didn't downgrade, they just switched the supras classes so that it could still go against the Z like the last gens did and also being a affordable tuner car aswell(which is becoming well more clear with tge amount of modded mk5s going around)unlike whats going down with thw gtr. Also, lets not forget that the Z is using a well over decade old chassis(that's modified) + a 5 year+ old ttV6 so i wouldn't get my hopes up at all,vs the mk5 thats newer and using a updated and has a good motor/trans combo with it aswell. Japanese or not theres no hiding that they're using decade old stuff vs a car with a new chassis and etc going along with it. They probably knew this and that is why they didn't want to dump a billion dollars into making a low volume car when you can build one with shelf parts.
Always loved the Supra. Never owned one. My favourite Design queue on this version is the Viperesque roofline
Nice car. Not a Toyota. Supra fans like me wanted a next generation Toyota Supra, not this abomination.
Factz! Im sure its not reliable either... the Mk 4 Supra was a true Toyota that could reach over 200,000 miles (as a sports car) without issues and was developed at the same time the 3rd gen Camry was.
Which we all know the 3rd gen Camry is bulletproof...😂
I’ve never owned one but I would buy one because it’s a the best of two iconic car makers , the 3 ltr to 60 is quicker than my rs4 ffs that has to be cool 👍
Roman said the 6 cylinder turbo is rated at 280hp and 275 lb ft and the 4 cylinder turbo is rated at 255 hp and 295 lb ft. If these numbers are accurate, why would anyone get the 6 cylinder?
He was wrong in the numbers. Misspoke...
Cross-shop perhaps with a BMW M240i, I’m not to sure about a Hellcat. The Supra is more compact, nimble, lightweight and direct.
I was just about to make the same comment. Personally I lean more towards the M240i. The 4 cylinder version might be comparable to an Ecoboost mustang with the 10 speed, performance pack, and magneride.
Granted, you pay for it, but you know you are getting a hand assembled engine by one of the most experienced Engineers at the plant...
Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
I appreciate the fact Toyota even bothered to make (and I use that term lightly) this car. I understand the reasoning behind the partnership with BMW, but it's not a Supra. If I wanted this, I'd have just gone to BMW.
@Saint Fifty One your point is?
Also, why do you keep randomly capitalizing letters? Is that supposed to help drive the point home?... whatever that point is.
Most of the people complaining about this car can't even afford one...🤷🏾♂️
Why? Because it's a fake.
If I was a Toyota fan boy I'd hate it.
I would be like mopar taking a camaro and putting a hellcat badge on it.
It would be like Mopar taking a Mercedes Benz chassis and building a muscle car in Canada. Lol
Great review guys. Always a pleasure to watch. Correction: The 2.0 has a mechanical LSD. I own a 2022 2.0 and LOVE it!!
Mk4 A80 Supra is a YAMAHA, Aristo, Getreg, and BMW, and was a poor seller when it was released to the public . Hence Toyota canceling it off in 1998 in the USA and 2002 in Japan.
Along with the MK3 looking like a copy of the BMW 850i of the 1980s.
And the MK2 and Mk1 Supras are both Lotus(British) cars with fkn Toyota badges!
So what is the fuss with the Toyota Supra A90 MK5 being co-developed by BMW?
The A80 Supra was from another time man. Another world, another Japan - where they built more. Now theyre a service economy like ours. Makes sense to outsource sports car development LOL
I wish I didn't sell my 94 Supra. And, I don't have any interest in buying a new one.
yup, same boat alot of people are in. they had high hopes for the next Supra....yet we got a BMW TURDPRA!!!
Lite brite modded theirs out a little and managed to get 600hp out of and turned it in to a nasty little drag car it awesome
I’d say the Honda K20C1, 306 HP from 2 liters is the best current engine available, and also comes with a manual transmission
Too bad you can only get it with a fwd platform (and yes, that's coming from a CTR owner)
It's so strange. Reading the comments, there is so much criticism for the Supra. Yet people absolutely love it when they see it in person.
Ok, Im back to amend my earlier comment... I did just see a blacked out Supra GR and it did look really nice! Not sure I would ever convert from the Z but the blacked out Supra GR was a head turner!
Roman, you and I are the same age. You’re so correct that the ‘85ish Supra was something special for the day. My best friend and I were 16 when his Dad came home from to Flagstaff from Bell Road Toyota in Phoenix with a red one. At first i scoffed as he’d gotten rid of a 924 to get it (smart move). Man was I wrong. Even at 7,000’ that thing left an impression on me. His dad was a Chemistry professor at NAU and fairly liberal, including his son’s access to the keys. We had respectful fun with that car. Even though the later gen’s get more attention, that second gen (I think, boxy) was/is my fav. (Didn’t they have head issues though?)
In my opinion it’s under appreciated is because it’s not a “Toyota”.
Im on the fence. Bmw repair bills. Its a toyota for bmw prices. It does look cool"saw a couple in real life" but i cant justify owning one. Youve taken out the Toyota reliability and replaced it with known bmw problems. If this was an in house Toyota product id be sold but we would have never seen it come to fruition. The real successor to the supra "lexus lfa" took 10 years. Hell the lfa evens looks like an evolution of the supra.
Examples?? Toyota vetted these engines quite thoroughly.
@@chuckcribbs3398 it’s not that they’re unreliable really. It’s that when you do have problems you have to spend Corolla money to repair it. Like, you could buy a Corolla…
Would love to buy one but all the dealerships near me are still marking these up 15k+
Everyone .... Google the Toyota Ft1 concept then look at this Supra mk5..
How do feel now?
Tommy's grin when he hit the gas (7:05) says it all 😁
Why the hate? It's not original.
No profits for Kraut companies.
Colonel Hogan never forgets.
I can tell you why… I bought a BMW Z4 brand new in 2016, it was broken so often I ended up putting more miles on their loan cars, literally. I SWITCHED to Toyota AND Lexus for my car needs to get away from BMW, now BMW is making a car with the Toyota badge. BMW builds amazing handling cars and fantastic engines that should be ditched before they are out of warranty, that has NEVER been the expectation of Toyota buyers.
Without Toyota financing the project the Z4 and Supra would not have existed
Probably better that way.
It’s not a BMW or a Toyota. It’s a Magna.
no it's a BMW TURDPRA, please get it right!
Lotus Emiraaaa !! 😍
Too soon to speak about the reliability one way or the other.
However the car as delivered is 382hp, gets over 30mpg and out performed the M2 Competition in most track tests. Not too mention a simple reflash of the ECU yields another 80 hp and even more torque. Considering the prices of the Porsche Cayman and the markups on the C8 Corvette this sits in a class by itself.
Taking the bus is a Miata killer 🤣🤣🤣
I don't care about the Supra nostalgia at all. I love everything about my Supra for what it is, right now, today.
I work at a Toyota dealership. Yes definitely people cross shop Toyota Supra with the Ford Mustang and Camaro!
I’m not a fan of Supra in Yellow or Red but it looks amazing in Black, Phantom, Absolute Zero, Tungsten, Turbulence Grey and Refraction Blue.
How's Supra selling in your country?
Are you guys selling it alot?
@@Jason-ld5fn not very well at all 😕
When I heard a new Surpra was coming. I thought about 1000whp 2JZ walking everything on the freeway. When this came out I was like AWWWWWW the disappointment LOL
Yeah you aren’t a real fan then. Lmao.
@@MaddNomad1015. Nope
It’s ugly and it’s not a Toyota. Two things that are hard to get over
this is the problem they put the wrong transmission in and they put a crap motor in and so it can't even begin to live up to the old one, so people are mad!
Can’t live up to the old one?? You really know nothing about this car and it’s motor. It’s a 10 second car with only a tune and a downpipe. These motors are pushing 800 whp on stock blocks just like the 2J. You doubt my statements look up Mike Botti tuned Supra’s.
In a world where most new cars look alike, when one comes along that looks different, and looks fantastic, it has to be appreciated. But now, I can't decide between the Supra and the Kia Soul. (In 30 or 40 years, the Supra will be one of those classic collectables that no one can afford, so buy one or two now and put them in your barn.)
A barn should be a classic collectible because no can afford those now😂
Short answer: it’s not a Toyota, it’s a BMW. Yes it’s a nice car but it’s just a reskinned BMW. I’m surprised they went this route considering the Supra’s legacy.
hammer : money dictates all. bmw + toyota together = saves money to develop a new car.
@@lensoprezole5322 but it didn't sell ANYWHERE NEAR what the expectation was for a "5th gen supra" it's a "reskinned BMW z4" dubbed the BMW Turdpra!! So why save money if you aren't going to make any? Not sure who at Toyota dropped the ball on this, but I hope they got fired for this disaster sales....
@@donaldtrumptard2759 I am definitely perplexed. It seems they would have been better off not releasing this and waiting till they were able to develop it properly or not at all.
@@donaldtrumptard2759 still outsold the whole A80 generation in pretty much 2 years without Toyota spending too much. They technically made money off of it. Lmao
Because it looks as a opposite to "bad ass". They should stick to the concept look of FT1. Not squish it like they did, but stick to the proportions. Supra is bleh, FT1 is WOOOOWWWWW WANT ONE!!!!!
Power specs for the 3L are actually 382hp 368 torque
Coz there is no single Toyota's parts in those Zupr4...😆
Love how nearly everyone in the comments knows nothing about the B58 and it’s power potential. Capable of 800 hp on a stock block and is an upper 10 second car with only a tune and a downpipe. Keep up the comments saying “it’s only a BMW” 🤡
I agree... The n54 to b58 is the new 2jz's but Toyota got lazy on not giving a Manuel option.
@@devinbender8428 When we refer to it being new 2jz we speak about its capabilities of reaching levels of power gains on stock eternals... You cant compare a LS or a coyote to a n54 to b58 or a 2jz because we are talking about straight 6 engines.. You will never see people swapping a BMW engine because BMW engines has BMW reputations.
OMG THE ANIME AVATAR, NO WONDER HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Spot on 🙌
people are skeptical about the reliability merging with BMW
The bottom line is that if Toyota had gone alone on the Supra they would’ve had to charge $75k+ in order to make their money back.
and they would have sold more units! instead they are STRUGGLING to make any money with how low sales are
@@donaldtrumptard2759 *looks at RCF sales (being that it’s a pure Toyota product) doesn’t sell as well as the BMW Zupra.
The gravel under your shoes is like a bad ASMR video. 🤣. But fantastic video, Thanks for all your hard work and great content!!
1994:
Supra Turbo: 320 hp
Mustang GT: 215 hp
Mustang SVT Cobra: 240 hp
Ferrari F355: 375 hp
2021:
Supra 3.0: 382 hp
Mustang GT: 460 hp
Mustang GT500: 760 hp
Ferrari F8: 710 hp
The disappointment is that 4th gen Supra Turbo was a world beater. It didn't build its reputation as a nimble sports car, it built its reputation on the 2JZ power. You don't see them at auto cross events, or road course track days, you see them at the drag strip.
Of course the 5th gen is quicker than the 4th gen. Cars have gotten quicker in 25 years. But compared to its peers, it doesn't stand out.
Bro the new Supra hits the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds stock! Plus if you did a little research you would know the car really has 448hp the the crank 388 hp to the wheels, 0-60 3.9 seconds on a rear wheel drive. What else do you want.
Needs a targa top and a orange paint option. It doesn’t help that it comes with a 4 cylinder. When I first heard that when they were announced I stopped paying attention and didn’t even realize for a while it could be had with a six cylinder.
The hate is for a simple.... Basic reason.... And it holds a very big meaning to reflect on car industry.... It is ( the worst thing about new supra... The thing the poeple hate most about the new supra... The cause of all shortcomings in the new supra is... Its made by BMW)... For me that is a big thing... Can u imagine bmw being the worst thing about a car???
Buy a 5+ year old out of warranty BMW... you’ll fully understand in no time!
@@user-up1ku4qz5h its a well known reputation, that i dont need to try personally and it is a big reason to not come near any bmw, and honestly its why i skipped the supra...!
Funny enough... The subaru-toyota is just totally fine and better than expected
Its humiliating to bmw
And the upcoming Z would rub this fact in bmw's face
@@abuali4680 I doubt that the Z will do much. If toyo wanted to they could easily just yank the turbos off bmws S58 and easily match the Z in power and probably even strap on the same 6 speed manuel from the M3/M4 and call it a day. If BMW allowed toyo to get their hands on their S58 i6 then the Z wouldn't be able to touch the mk5. Now its too early to compare both since we still havent heard anything/gotten real life tests to prove its better(till August)but it's not going to kill the mk5 if it can't do many of the same feats the mk5 can.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 the idea is not about numbers on papers, and i dont think it ever was, the idea is to provide a platform, i give u this supra... everything works well and well put together... Then u take it and do your thing... Strip off parts... Add parts... Turbo... Twin turbo... Quad turbo.. Just do ur thing
Same as for the z
Just see how it happened that the mk5 has downgraded the supra status from GTR rival... To Z rival! While its supposed to be the 86 the z rival
True we cant say much until z is out, but just for the known fact that z is pure japanese, and mk5 is a bmw... Tells a lot about what we r going to see
I odnt say toyota cant do... They can do better than anyone... But it was a terrible choice to hook it with bmw, and i think this will let mk5 sit on the bench until a japanese mk6 comes... If it ever will
See how fantastic is the 86!!! That sthe formula... Pure japanese platform for ur imagination
@@abuali4680 the mk4 was rivaling the Z in its time also and was even in the same class as it also(since both the mk4 and z were both GT cars in that time)while the 34 was a sportscar in its time in a class separate from the mk4. Yes their stats we're similar but that doesn't change that they were both in separate classes from each other. Now we can't say either cars better yet since one of them isn't out yet/not knowing the stats of it either so time will tell whether or not its better or not.
Cross-shopped, and my fully loaded Mach 1 came in at 58,000!! With all the track cooling systems, the tremec manual transmission, magnaride suspension, a 480hp v8 and 4 mostly usable seats is a bargain in comparison!!!!! 😽😻💪
21 Supra is faster then a Mach 1, video is on TH-cam.
@@jpSD297 I didn’t buy it because it’s fast. That’s why I chose the manual. I bought it for driver engagement. And it is one of the most engaging drives I’ve had for a while! :-)
@Glasspack40 Yes because even though it’s slower than the 382 hp supra GR, it’s guttural and it is something you feel in the drive, if I wanted a faster version I would’ve gotten the automatic and then put a supercharger on it. If you were in the area I’d say let’s go for a drive you’ll love it! :-) That’s the same thing I would say if I had a supra, except it just wouldn’t have a manual and it would be a little bit less engaging.
Been an absolute sales disaster here in Europe unsurprisingly, it's such a half hearted effort an expensive lackluster forgery of a Supra.
And I bet you’ve never driven one. As a mk4 owner and mk5 owner, the mk5 is better in every aspect compared to the mk4.
@@bigneutron77 I'd expect a brand new bmw to feel better than an Mk4. Doesnt say much. I mean shit, you have both so I know you know how special the Mk4 is. Okay fine, they dont handle the same as a newer sports car, maybe not as fast either but it doesnt matter....obviously it doesnt matter because you still have one, because its special. You love the sound and the feeling it gives you. The driver engagement, that toyota smell in the interior.
Toyota is more than capable of creating a successor to their holy grail car but they chose to cheap out and save money by enlisting the Germans to build the car. That's fine because at the end of the day, Toyota is in the business of making money and the Supra nor any sports car they ever made is a cash cow. But, they're trying to pass this thing off as a Supra and its just....not.
@@Mistadontplay89 the mk4 is not special unless you dump money into it. The mk5 comes off the show room floor kicking ass and taking names.
