We’ve had Mercedes in my family for years, we keep going back because they have never broken and they are great city cars. I’m excited to see what happens when pushed outside of the city and truly pushed to its limits!
I agree with everything besides "I think it's a great decision". I think it might be more accurate to suggest you need your head examined. But I understand that "the heart wants what the heart wants".
I just want to say, I have been interested in a 2nd hand G wagon as a off road focused setup and it's hard to find a good review for exactly this! Thank yall for this series
Mid-00s G500s are solid and have gotten as cheap as they're going to get. Earlier ones are hard to find in good shape, often underpowered, often basic, and still expensive but you can sometimes find manual ones. Mercedes-Benz didn't officially sell the G-Wagen in the US until the 2000s, earlier models were imported by Europa or individuals.
In my area there are 378 new 4 door Wrangler Rubicon's and the cheapest one is basically $56,500. I'd take a G in that price range over a Wrangler any day.
Buy a base Wrangler or Bronco. Add lockers if necessary (looking at you, Jeep). You've just surpassed that G63, which will need a suspension lift, new tires, and skid plates at a minimum on top of the $58k purchase price. And hopefully nothing breaks, requiring the added time and cost of parts and labour (that engine bay looks so crowded replacing spark plugs could cost a small fortune in labour). Meanwhile, that domestic off-roader still has a warranty, new tires, etc. And of course there's also Toyota. This is quite clearly a purchase driven by the heart, as it makes no rational sense. But it's not my money. I'm just going to make sure I have popcorn and enjoy the show.
Apple to oranges. With a used G there's no warranty, parts & repairs are expensive, mods are much more limited and much more expensive, and can't take the doors and roof off. Neither is better or worse, just different.
Congratulations!!! There is something to be said about finally obtaining that car/truck you've been obsessing for years. What a wonderful feeling. Congratulations! It is a dream car.
Good to be the king! Congrats Roman on your dream car to add to your other dream car, the i8! Maybe have a dream car section at the ranch?! Congrats sir, happy for you and TFL are at a place to be able to do this!
I would just love to see a good ownership experience. Nothing worse than being able to acquire your dream car and then get disappointed because it wasn’t close to what you thought! Good luck, enjoy! PS - How does the G compare with the grenadier? I didn’t find it very dreamy

Can’t wait to see how reliable/or not it is for y’all, and what all you end up doing with it. I am sure y’all will enjoy it for what it’s worth even with quirks and issues. Really thrilled about this for y’all haha
We test drove that exact vehicle in Aurora a couple months ago as well. The G-wagon makes sense regarding the potential off-road capabilities if you’re willing to drop the cash into it, however wasn’t for us; felt like too many compromises for our desires given the vintage if used every day. As a purely extra vehicle in the fleet for off-road, perhaps. Engine was a beast for sure, but overall felt like the rest of the handling needed refinement and a serious upgrade into today’s generation for the whole vehicle. Too unrefined for its vintage and price. Good luck - will be fun to see how it pans out.
Starting at 21:09, the articulation over the next 15 seconds is really impressive. Which looks even more strange with the giant wheels and low profile tires 🙂 looking forward to this series!
I lifted mine 3" and ran 34.5" bfg mud terrains on the oem g63 wheels. You wont be disappointed. I do recommend having the tires shaved once mounted. I can still travel at highway speeds with no vibration.
Awesome… These guys are gonna love this truck off road. I’ve got the military spec G300 that the Australian army has 2400 of and it’s phenomenal off road. I also have a Toyota Troopcarrier and the G is the better off-roader. Because it’s compact you can see every corner and control the vehicle with confidence, the solid axels and lockers are unstoppable, the coils all round bring comfort and the thing is built like it’s honed from one block of stone. TFL probably should have got the G500 though for setting up as an off-roader. As Roman said, the ability to fit smaller wheels and larger tyres would have been the benefit of the G500 and the G63 probably has too much power off road, especially for Moab rock crawling! Anyway, awesome videos ahead and this truck will prove to be phenomenal off-road!
I wrote the same thing, they should not have gotten an AMG version for potential off-road use. I have kicked around the idea of a ‘10 or ‘11 (for the simple reason that the center stack looks easier to upgrade to a modern headunit) to replace my ‘97 LX450 80 series daily driver. I put on around 2k miles each year just getting to-from pavement here in AZ. Plus I take it on LC Club trail events and my own adventures here, Utah and Mexico. I do all my own wrenching, and from research, the NA’s don’t seem too bad to work on. Still, I know if I sell my built and beloved 80, I may regret it down the road. Then again, I’ve dreamed of a G since those early Europa ads in the back of Autoweek and other rags back in the what late 80’s early 90’s… ugg. 😊
I’ve owned a 96 G320 which I brought back from Japan and have a 2.5” lift with 32s and take it off-roading since that’s what it was made to do. Absolutely love the g wagon.
Owned an ‘02 S430. Absolutely loved that car. Had an NA 4.3L V8, famous for its utter reliability 5-speed auto, air suspension, Bose sound and all that. Had nearly 200K miles on it, and still worked flawlessly. Suspension of course crapped out during its lifetime, but if it’s taken care of properly and following manual, it was fine. Also, the transmission went for 187K miles without a single service, and worked perfectly. Did a service and it worked exactly the same, was smooth, never skipped a beat. Great car.
Fun video, I love the thought of getting it back to basics! Hope you let Tommy and Kase do some more off-road-testing with it! I want to see how far they can take it! 😄
@@justinkase1360 When they cost the same and are both 4x4 SUVs, it makes sense to compare them. If I found a diesel G-Wagen with a manual in good shape, I'd snap that thing up over a run of the mill Wrangler or Bronco.
There are dozens of us! I love that the older Gs are getting to a price point where they're a viable alternative to a new Bronco or Rubicon, and the right ones will probably still be trucking while those Fords and Jeeps are needing new engines or transmissions. I went from an FJ80 on 37s to a G55 which is now on 35s. It costs more to get the G55 to the level of capability that you can get an FJ80 to with just a couple thousand bucks but at least you're not buying lockers or stronger axles, plus it's a much nicer vehicle and it hauls! P.S. Jack Wagon Overlanding is the go-to for G mods. Jack knows more than probably anyone else in the hobby about outfitting these trucks.
Rock sliders, bigger tires, smaller wheels, and a lift is all it needs!!! I cant wait to see what you guys do with it. I feel like there is not enough off road footage of these G Wagons. Thank you TFL for starting this series!
Not sure if you can use smaller wheels on the 571 Hp version. I think 18s were possible on the 544 Hp version but the 2015+ have massive front brakes and need at least 20s.
22:18 best part ever. ❤. Roman you knew the assignment immediately give it to kase and tommy to try it out with Alex filming well done bro we love you . Best dad ever. Ok now you all have to dress up in suits and be debonair. And go to the hamptons lmao. The vids would be epic.
I ended up with 3 kid these before I bought my 4x4 squared. Portal axles, massive clearance and the best ride quality of all of the G wagens convinced me. Only about 300 imported too. I never see them.
well done !! i didnt have the courage to buy a 63 for off roading i bought a 500 (with the m176 4.0l) thought it was more appropriate but cant wait to see what you do with it !!!
@@G500expedition a 500 *is* more appropriate!!. Curious to see how they handle the sidepipes and programming for a larger dia. tire. From my research it isn’t easy to keep the system happy.
You should use the G-Wagon to tow a Kei truck and build both of them for off-roading, then do an off-road shootout. I suspect a Kei truck with a rear locker would do circles around the G off-road, simply for the smaller wheelbase and great angles.
I love how TFL has been taking us to the used cars lately. Because the new ones are so expensive and crappy I have been going back to used myself. It’s almost like a time warp and a reminder that we dont remember how good we had it lol 😆 Great work guys !
This will be sweet. Most videos of these are pretty light off roading. Using it like how you guys plan will be fun to watch! Roman always likes g wagons so it’s cool to get one.

@@ConsoleCombat It really doesn't explain why an American car in the US would be reliable, but if you export it, the car becomes unreliable. Run Ohlins extra long shocks with extended stainless brake and locker lines and the ORC heavy spring set. I've found that to be about perfect. Both have winch bumpers but your're probably going to find adding one to an AMG more difficult due to the extra coolers. G-wagenaccessories has some of the best designed kit for the exterior. Good luck!
I've owned and wheeled 80series, ('94), JKU ('12), and now my G500 ('08); I haven't looked back once. With my small lift and 34" tires I can play with the Wranglers on the trails.
Congratulations, the older generation G wagon is one of my dream vehicles too and I'm very excited to see more content with it especially the off-road content.
It took a giant dump so they got rid of it quietly behind the scenes and havent mentioned it since... that thing was never meant for any sort of real offroading anyways
I have the same as this one. Had it for four years. Not completely without problems. But I love it every day. Most noticeable, is how small it is. Just looking big.
Yup, many people are not really getting it. A 463 5 door including the spare on the rear door is shorter than for example a Skoda Octavia combi. Also just 2m wide including the mirrors it was the narrowest MB of it’s time.
This is an absolute over priced vehicle not very good to drive onroad but off road an absolute perfect beast . Had one in our family never took it for road trips but every chance i had to go Offroad it was my number one
Good choice for an interesting TFL ride. Looking forward to seeing some off road shenanigans 🌲Maybe some good comparisons to the some of Land Rovers you guys have.
get a power bleeder and flush the brake fluid in the 4x4 system , its one of the lest maaintined systems on the gwagon. also it will probalby ned some grease added to the front axles go lock to lock and you will see the fill plug next to the ball on the front axle.
A friend of mine has a military surplus Puch G Wagon - very stripped down and very military feeling. It has a mercedes 4 cylinder engine, so it's not fast but it goes anywhere. He paid something like $15k for it on a military surplus site about 5 years ago.
@@bwofficial1776 He did! He bought it from a place called Expedition Imports. They brought a bunch over and sold them on their site. They don't sell complete vehicles now, just parts for G / Mog / Pinzgauer.
That thing is so sick, I’d love to take something like that with appropriate tires and clearance to Moab. Great time to buy stuff like this, you’ll get to do snow tests, drag race, off-road/crawlin etc. all in the next few weeks. Great move!
@The Fast Lane Car I have a 1997 G300 diesel which is modded to be a camping vehicle. We should do a comparison sometime and put them through some fun tests
I drove the military version of this (240GD, SWB) roughly 20k miles through post-war Bosnia and Croatia. That thing would climb over anything. Just needs proper tires and a bit of a lift.
It amazes me how much of the Benz switchgear trickles down to their truck division especially Freightliner. You will notice immediately how many switches and screens that were in this thing carry over to a new Cascadia.
Smoking deal on this beautiful G Wagon Roman, these units with the solid axles are proven to be more reliable than the newer ones with IFS and fewer components to wear out also, its in minty shape, your cheeks are gonna be sore from smiling ear to ear each time you get behind the wheel, I remember the episode in Moab when you drove them and you got into the V12 demo they had there and you stomped on it and laughed like hell saying it was bat shit crazy it was so fast 🤣 good times ahead
Looking forward to more updates on this, it is one of the vehicles I'm considering to replace my gladiator next year and I do a fair amount of mild to moderate offroad and overlanding.
Definitely not the world’s worst cup holder. The early 90s Chevys I think it was had two cup holders directly on top of the dash board with nothing to actually hold the cup.
Good luck with your G63 project. I have the identical vehicle (2016 G63) set up for off-roading in Australia. Super capable. p.s I have a set of 18" Alpha rims that I imported from USA and they fit over the brake calipers.
Glad Roman finally gets to have one. I had mine, before they were mass produced & sent to the States, sorta. I had a '95 G320(inline 6) Cabriolet fully tuned by Brabus. Like my last MB. Besides not being a basic wagon since it was sent from the factory. It was armored, including "revolutionary" Kevlar top(at the time). I was one of 4 people in all of CA that had one, then 😂. & I regularly took mine down to Baja with a fair amount of offroading. What it could do was Phenomenal! Everywhere I went ppl wanted to know about it. If I were to get another, would be the Cabrio! Tho 1 of our bfs does have a G65 Brabus. & really wants the EV version, he loves the spin feature 😂(stupid trick, but less $) As for your Look? Maybe a Fade Red back to front. Red turning to White? Be awesome w/your Branding! & less mundane. My mantra, why be Bla Beige Boring?
Congratulations, Roman!! I’m stoked for you. It’s beautiful. The story behind these is interesting, as jt was originally designed for the Shah of Iran.
Why get that spec when you're going to change it. Consider the paint job, some clear coat job would be better. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Can you guys review on road manners and comfort of this G vs other solid front axle vehicles like Ineos and Rubicon before and after lift and bigger tires.
I considered one at the time I bought my 200 series (a used G). I was a bit worried about overall reliability. I still own the Land Cruiser with 212k miles on it. I dont think the G wouldve made it that far with nothing more than basic maintenance. But, they look cool as hell and theres actually some really good aftermarket support for it.
As an owner that wants to take the 02 G500 out to the bad lands. I’d be really interested in it having a modest lift of 2 inches and 33 or 35 and seeing how capable it is on some harder trails with all of the factory articulation.
I have a G55 with 250,000 miles, runs great... nothing on the inside works, but the drivetrain is flawless.
G55 is bulletproof. I have a 2011 model. Just one repair for 4 years of ownership.
🤣 you've helped me so much.

Love it. Awesome vehicle. I seen it in a previous video as a chase vehicle. Can't wait to see more videos.
Glad you liked it! It's going to be around for a while!
I've owned and wheeled 80series, ('94), JKU ('12), and now my G500 ('08); I haven't looked back once. With my small lift and 34" tires I can play with the Wranglers on the trails.
Congratulations, the older generation G wagon is one of my dream vehicles too and I'm very excited to see more content with it especially the off-road content.
what happened to the GL that you guys had? the one with the rear diff lockers
It took a giant dump so they got rid of it quietly behind the scenes and havent mentioned it since... that thing was never meant for any sort of real offroading anyways
@TheOutdoorBeerReview giant dump? 😄
@@GeoZeppelin1979 It broke. Went kaput. Failed spectacularly. Kaboom.
We sold it a little while back! It’s still doing great as far as we know!
Every day that goes by, I love my 1998 Isuzu Trooper more and more.
Awesome purchase. Does TFL ever buy on extended warranties on used vehicles?
I have the same as this one. Had it for four years. Not completely without problems. But I love it every day. Most noticeable, is how small it is. Just looking big.
Yup, many people are not really getting it. A 463 5 door including the spare on the rear door is shorter than for example a Skoda Octavia combi. Also just 2m wide including the mirrors it was the narrowest MB of it’s time.
Finaly! I‘ve benn waiting for that 👍🏼👍🏼
There are times when a little box on solid axles is just what you need. Kinda expensive for what it is though.
I love the G-Wagon! It is the ultimate off-roader for sure, and ultimate tank! Great idea to buy one!!!
Congratulations! I know Roman has wanted one of these for a long time. Would love to have one myself!
Considering the test that whistling diesel put it through that's one of the best 4x4 vehicles ever
get a power bleeder and flush the brake fluid in the 4x4 system , its one of the lest maaintined systems on the gwagon. also it will probalby ned some grease added to the front axles go lock to lock and you will see the fill plug next to the ball on the front axle.
Great video, glad you got your dream car!! Can't wait to see the off road videos of it!!!
Good luck with it guys. Great buy and I hope you keep on finding these gems!
A friend of mine has a military surplus Puch G Wagon - very stripped down and very military feeling. It has a mercedes 4 cylinder engine, so it's not fast but it goes anywhere. He paid something like $15k for it on a military surplus site about 5 years ago.
He got a great deal on that G.
@@bwofficial1776 He did! He bought it from a place called Expedition Imports. They brought a bunch over and sold them on their site. They don't sell complete vehicles now, just parts for G / Mog / Pinzgauer.
I hope you got a PPI done by Toby!
Best truck I ever owned! I have a 2016 G63 with 30K miles on it. Best decision ever made. Glad you guys doing this series.
That thing is so sick, I’d love to take something like that with appropriate tires and clearance to Moab. Great time to buy stuff like this, you’ll get to do snow tests, drag race, off-road/crawlin etc. all in the next few weeks. Great move!
Gwhiz I wanted this exact spec so I'm shopping, looking forward to the future videos
@The Fast Lane Car I have a 1997 G300 diesel which is modded to be a camping vehicle. We should do a comparison sometime and put them through some fun tests
Very excited to see the G put through all of the daily life use tests.
You bet, we'll be putting it through the paces!
At 1:09 I’m sure you were like dang, I should not have pulled it this hard 😂. Swiftly pushed it back in… slick
I drove the military version of this (240GD, SWB) roughly 20k miles through post-war Bosnia and Croatia.
That thing would climb over anything. Just needs proper tires and a bit of a lift.
Loved this Video ! This is MY kind of content !! Thanks Guys !
Finally. The best car ever made but the diesel is the best , the 2017 professional g wagon is amazing
It amazes me how much of the Benz switchgear trickles down to their truck division especially Freightliner. You will notice immediately how many switches and screens that were in this thing carry over to a new Cascadia.
Good buy Roman, can wait to see more content about this vehicle 😊
Nice rig. Interested to see what you do with it. Congrats
Man I wish my GX460 had even 400 horsepower - 500 horsepower + is very awesome in a truck like this.
Why didn’t you keep your Ineos grenadier? It’s far more capable than this G setup.
Lol exactly what I was thinking 😂
I've recently been tempted by this generation g wagon as well.
I'm curious to see how it works out
Smoking deal on this beautiful G Wagon Roman, these units with the solid axles are proven to be more reliable than the newer ones with IFS and fewer components to wear out also, its in minty shape, your cheeks are gonna be sore from smiling ear to ear each time you get behind the wheel, I remember the episode in Moab when you drove them and you got into the V12 demo they had there and you stomped on it and laughed like hell saying it was bat shit crazy it was so fast 🤣 good times ahead
Looking forward to more updates on this, it is one of the vehicles I'm considering to replace my gladiator next year and I do a fair amount of mild to moderate offroad and overlanding.
You can get an old g550 in excellent condition for 30k and up depending on mileage.
Great engine, great trans. Just needs the turbo coolant lines, front cam covers, water pump and it’s ready to go. Also a tune
Whistlin' had a great time with his at the dunes and at Moab. Looking forward to this series, just dont drop it through a house.
Or fill it with concrete 😂
One of my dream cars as well! Can’t wait to see its capabilities ❤
Looks gorgeous on road and off road!!!
Congratulations, Roman!! I’m stoked for you. It’s beautiful. The story behind these is interesting, as jt was originally designed for the Shah of Iran.
I am psyched to see what you guys do with this one. I’ve always wanted one for the off-road capability but can’t afford one.
Why get that spec when you're going to change it. Consider the paint job, some clear coat job would be better. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Can you guys review on road manners and comfort of this G vs other solid front axle vehicles like Ineos and Rubicon before and after lift and bigger tires.
Congratulations Roman, well deserved 👍
I considered one at the time I bought my 200 series (a used G). I was a bit worried about overall reliability. I still own the Land Cruiser with 212k miles on it. I dont think the G wouldve made it that far with nothing more than basic maintenance. But, they look cool as hell and theres actually some really good aftermarket support for it.
Can't wait to see the transformation Roman does to it!
Id much prefer an old basic one or a lada niva but great for you hope it works out great
Awesome! Can not wait to see all that you guys do with this. Please do an Ike towing with it.
Best Choice EVER!!! Nothing Beats A G Wagon!!!
I have seen a rancher with a nice G wagon with tires. Such a fantastic machine
As an owner that wants to take the 02 G500 out to the bad lands. I’d be really interested in it having a modest lift of 2 inches and 33 or 35 and seeing how capable it is on some harder trails with all of the factory articulation.
