My buddy, Cape Dory Carlton, spent $9k on his awesome Cape Dory 7 years ago and, in addition to annual upkeep, has only purchased a new dodger over that time - and he sails more than anyone I know (anyone with a job, that is - which means most of us..). Sellers are getting anxious. Deals are in the offing! And if you live in Florida, one of these boats might be ideal for you. Any one of these sailboats would be perfect for day sailing, some weekend overnights, and some could even take you just about anywhere you'd want to go. All of these boats are very cool! In Feb 2018 we were anchored in No Name Harbor, Key Biscayne and Willow came in and dropped the hook. I recognized it immediately as a Rhodes Chesapeake 32 so I jumped in the dinghy and motored over to speak with the owner. He had undertaken an amazing refit and the boat was pristine. It looks like she remains so today. $25K is a steal!!! I have some great photos of Willow that I can send you in interested.

Keep selling dreams. While I may be able to handle the maintenance and upkeep of a boat, I would prefer to dream, specially at my age of 77. Thanks for your excellent presentation.

I should mention that a 1978 Endeavor 32 recently sold here in Milwaukee for $7,000.00 ! This boat seemed to be in good working order with a running diesel. The four ft draft of this boat is fantastic for Chesapeake, Florida, and Bahamas cruising.

I grew up on Morgans and Bristols. My father was a dealer for Morgans around 1970's in Sarasota. Bristol is a "gentlemen/Ladies" sailboat. We had the 41.1 and I just loved sailing her in super bad weather (railing in the water).

Could you do Top 10 under 2K
Just a couple thoughts to consider. Florida is two very different sailing areas. On the east coast draft is rarely a problem. On the west coast draft is everything. Not uncommon on the west coast to be a couple miles out and in only three feet of water. Another major issue for boats in Florida is blistering. Boats prior to 1975 rarely blister. Boats between 77 and 90 are often badly blistered. Having the blisters repaired isn't the end of the story, they nearly always return at other locations on the hull. It stems from the layup process used during those years.
I'm a fan of old boats, have owned several, but if you're thinking about staying aboard at anchor in Florida think generator. On the water the heat can be overwhelming, even in the winter. Not many sailboats can accommodate a generator.
If you're looking to be a weekend warrior the older boats are a great choice, but be alert for thru-hull issues, engine overheating due to worn out or blocked heat exchanger. Finally boats viewed in person rarely match the quality of posted photos, so be ready for lots of surprises. The heat and salt are really hard on boats. Of your ten, I'd look at the Rhodes, but the interior comfort is likely to fall far short of newer boats. Good luck to those searching in Florida, the market for good boats is really tight and has been since covid.
Hi Betsy! All excellent points. The short answer is everyone should come to Maine to buy their boats - boats up here are in the water for 4-5 months a year! No place is perfect...sadly. Thanks for the thoughtful comments and for watching!
The obstacle to buying a boat in Maine is getting it to where folks want to use it. It is a long and difficult trip by water and usually cost-prohibitive or size impossible by land. I agree the cold water and minimal use is a strong positive. The market in Florida suffers from two few boats and too many buyers, with the opposite the case in Maine. One option I have used is searching the less popular Florida cruising area which is the panhandle. Texas is also a location that permits moving the boat by water with minimal difficulty. I owned a 45 Columbia, shoal draft, which was built like a tank but the boats suffer from water intrusion into the decks so lots of soft spots. Otherwise it is a great boat. California also seems to have more boats than buyers. At the moment I'm searching for a boat in the 30 to 36 foot range with a draft under four feet. Not easy specifications to find other than in a cat or trimaran, and those are incredibly overpriced in Florida.

The Chesapeake32 is gorgeous and the fact that this boat is also my birth year is even better, thick fiberglass layup and a perfect size for a single or close couple. this is the rare boat that you would want to keep bristol and spend money and time on. i bet she would get a higher price up north and in Puget Sound. simply beautiful.

Another great episode. You mentioned that you used to sail on Fiesta the C&C 40 ... It's been up for sail for some time online ... it's a long trip up to look at it from the NY area. Your thoughts on that specific boat? It looks to be in very good condition from the pictures, but i know for a fact that it has been on the market for quite some time now. One troubling thing to note in the description is that the newest upgrade was two batteries in 2020, and nothing else recent (lifelines back in 2012 -- that's 11 years ago). It does come with significant sail package (14 sails), but no mention of their age or condition.
So, yes, have sailed on Fiesta extensively and have helped commission and decommission over the past two years. Basically she sits on her mooring in Camden from July through August. Used once or twice. She’s a good boat in need of some love and attention. The photos are accurate. But if you’re looking for a boat for cruising, she would need some tweaking (in terms of comfort, like a proper dodger or bimini), but if you’re looking for some race action, she can still tear it up. The asking price hasn’t budged. I think she’s worth a shot at $25k or $28k. The owner loves that boat like it’s his child. Truly.
I love the Cape Dory 25D except for one thing: Hardly any storage. Great choice for day sailing or overnighters as you said but not for extended cruising.
Agreed! My buddy has the CD30. A lot more room for extended cruising. The 25 is definitely great for days sailing and a weekend here and there. Thanks for watching
Bristol 32 does hold 100gal water. Decks are solid fiberglass, no coring. As for hobby-horsing, the simple solution is to bear off a few degrees.

@@boatfools In your listing you mentioned a '76 Bristol. At first glance, I thought it might be S/V Kestrel. She's the Bristol 32 I wanna be when I grow up. Originally owned, maintained, and upgraded by John Atkinson, she was sold to someone in Florida after his passing. She sold quickly and for good reason. The website remains available. It details how he made a great boat even better, and covers his solo roundtrip in Kestrel to Europe. Talk about gorgeous. That boat was neat as a pin. The man was a character and his log is a joy to read. I was just discovering sailing when I stumbled onto his website. He was happy to offer answers and advice, though, he was a salty character, and to me, it just made him more likable. Mad respect for the man. My '32's decks are concrete solid (I learned how that felt different than cored ones), has two factory installed water tanks for a total of that 100 gallons, and the Bukh DV20 diesel, a true marine diesel engine. Smooth as butter. She was a Katrina refugee from a New Orleans marina. Her mast had been taken out and she was rounded up with the rest and carted off to Gulfport, MS staging area for auction. When I saw her stern peeking out past another boat, I was intrigued. Looked like the America's Cup boats of old. She looked like a pretty lady having a really bad day, her broken mast lashed on deck. I had to climb up on the boat next to her and jump over to check her out. When I did, I expected the deck to spring ever so slightly. It didn't, my knees buckled just a bit and I almost fell off! I was amazed at how solid she felt. Onboard there were interesting items like a sailing racing rules book and souvenirs from the Caymans. So began my quest to bring her back and to learn about sailing. The quest, thanks to life's vindictive nature, is incomplete, basically on life support at this point, but I haven't given up.

Just be sure to look her over closely! If it seems to good to be true, it probably is! Solid boats though- a few for sale up here in the $20-$30k range. Good luck!

Boat # 7 image appears to be a Catalina 28 and not a 28 MK II. The MK II was produced later and has additional ports in the hull, bulkheads separating the V-berth from the salon and an angulated galley arrangement. These differences all appear in the spec sheet referenced in the video.. cheers!

Not off the top of my head. But was it a one-off custom boat? Where was she built?
It is true that here are some very nice and well built older boats around. However, nowadays holding tanks are required and it may be difficult to retrofit one of these into, say, a 28 ft Triton or similar vessel.
Hopefully one can be found that has had that modification work completed already. There are companies that specialize in making tanks for older boats/odd shapes. And there are bladders, but those would make me nervous! Thanks for watching!

Man I’ve never even heard of the Chesapeake 32 but she’s GORGEOUS. The Bristols are lovely as well although somehow the 32 is just slightly prettier. Keep up the great work. And now I’ve got a new old boat to add to my list 👌

Hello! Thanks for watching. We got ours through Berkley One. I know that when we were shopping around, having a sailing resume helped - as did having prior boat ownership. Policies are out there - mooring may not be! A seven year wait list here in Camden - so we went down the road 7 miles and there was no wait. Go figure. #1 is #1. My only draw back on this is keel and rudder . Wonderful lines above the water line but it's what's below the water line that's a large measure of the vessel. Just saying .

You are selling dreams and ignoring moneypits. Leaks, deck cores, rotten plywood that was not marine ply. Rigging well past replacement date. Sails shot. Those prices can triple with typical problemz. Every boat is reported to be in excellent condition. Fantasyland.
First of all, thanks for watching. Secondly, I respect your opinion. I will add, however, that I always recommend a trust but verify approach, and always recommend a survey. When a boat is suggested to be in "excellent condition" - it's relative and the boat should be scrutinized carefully. No boat that is 20-50 years old is in "excellent condition". That said, of course I am selling dreams - and I hope people follow their own. There are plenty of "good" used boats out there. What's the alternative? Sell your home and buy a boat? There are very few of us out there who can or should do that... As I've said before, it's a lot like buying an antique car (or any car). But on an antique car, you might have to have some welding done, some bondo work completed, an engine rebuild, or get new tires on account of dry rot. We don't buy an antique car because it's smart, or efficient, etc. We buy one because we love it. Same with used boats. Obviously, when I am searching for boats, I am looking for those that appear to be in the best condition within the budget. I am not looking for beaters. Lastly, a friend of mine bought a used Cape Dory 30 for $9,000 seven years ago. Other than brightwork and a new dodger (and oil changes and regular seasonal maintenance) he's done nothing to it. It's a 1980 sailboat. And he sails more than anyone I know and he loves that boat more than his rum and tonics.

Why so bitter and hostile? It’s not like the man is representing these boats as being perfect vessels so you should run to the seller throwing the full price at them sight unseen. He clearly says “reported to be…” when he mentions the claims about condition listed in the ad. And I know I heard him say several times that certain things were “concerning”. He’s just reading ads and looking at photos to pick out some boats that would be worth looking at due to reasons which many new to sailing folks looking for a first boat aren’t likely to know, like certain models or manufacturers that are particularly sought after or desirable and things that may be an issue…even including which boats he thinks could or should be had for less than the asking price. He’s providing information that people wouldn’t have unless they have a knowledgeable friend. And that’s pretty valuable and helpful to a lot of buyers. He’s definitely educating and providing lots of useful info and guidance. If anyone were to go off and buy one of these boats without a survey, or at least having it looked over informally believing that it must be tip top and ready to sail around the world on day one, then they aren’t too sharp and can’t blame anyone but themselves for buying a barely floating turd.

Common sense would be to get boats checked out and be ready to spend $$$ on maintenance and other hidden/surprise costs.

And you definately don't want a boat with over 4ft of draft, even LESS would be better on the west coast of Florida, is so shallow there. You need to be able to run up to the beach as close as possible.
Winds are usually so light, you don't want a SLUG of a boat with a full keel, will be slow as hell.
AND slip rents have gone off the charts in Florida as I imagine has insurance, if you can even get it, and you NEED IT if you're in a marina. The old days of a $100 slip are long gone, try $400++ per month
Here's tip on boat insurance. Take out liability only. It satisfies the marinas and won't break the bank.
