Hi, just bought the 2003 Catalina Mark II shown for $50K ($59K list). Needs a new main sail but surveyor said closest to a new boat he's seen. Only 671 engine hours. Seller agreed to pay for 6 months on the hard so I can work on details until after hurricane season. I haven't been a Catalina fan in the past but this boat changed my mind. Keel bolts look new! Thank you Lady K Sailing for all you do!
Just viewed this from Fort Pierce, two days before we haul our Beneteau Oceanis 473 after a winter cruise in the Bahamas. You are so right about the dinghy and the solar! Last December we upgraded our solar to a bit over 1,100 watts and had ice cream throughout our cruise. The batteries went into float mode everyday before noon! And the dinghy is powered by a 25hp Yamaha. With four people on board we could quickly and safely travel pretty long distances to explore or visit a beach bar or restaurant. Just remember to have a portable VHF aboard, as well as a really good anchor with plenty of rode, and other safety gear! You don’t want to drift out to sea if the engine dies on you…
My pick is a Privilege 39 Catamaran listed at $130k. Plenty of solar, huge davits and twice the room and speed of a mono puttering along at 9 knots. lol
Catalina 34's coming in at 11-12000 pounds might be brochure weight. They routinely come in around 15000-16000 on the crane when launched and hauled out. Forget the Hunter, and whatever marginal if any 'comfort' they're supposed to have, if you can afford a Catalina, buy it. They sail better than 'ok', and they are very comfortable, with more than enough room.
Desiderata - "Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons." A poem that should be taught to all young ppl.
Question: Other channels have brought up "noise" as being a problem on sailboats. If you are a liveaboard or costal-cruiser you have the same problem if the boat is too loud to sleep on it impacts your readiness. Is sound a problem on all sailboats? Does it have to do with the weight of the boat? Blue water boats have the same problem as pocket cruisers?
I am a Long time subscriber, I love your videos. I was wondering what you think of the hopyacht 30? I have hoped you would touch on it at some point, but you never have, though i understand its a little outside the usual boats you look at. Thanks for your time and keep up the great work!
Been following the Wynns, and one thing they hated about their Leopard catamaran were the curvy plexiglass windows. When they hazed over, had to be replaced at great cost by a custom shop. They pointed out that this is a fault of the Juneau's as well. Is there a Beneteau model that would fit the bill. Watching their episodes in New Zealand where they had to carefully remove the existing windows/portholes (needed for molds for the new ones) and then prep the openings was painful.
I'm thinking of 54 feet Full roller , robust anchoring ,sugarscoop, Electric winches , Midships stateroom, Hard dodger with no lines through it. Really like the 54'Hylas and the Amel 54'.
Right out of the gate, you have a wonderful sense of humor (about kids in church.) LoL! My church has Sunday School for the hyper youngsters. nice selection of boats. One person said Floatr and saltyb.
Great video. One of the best ones yet! Boatlife should be the new name. It's all about the lifestyle! HOPEFULLY next year will be my new lifestyle, new to me boat to me, and Carrabean sunsets! Fair winds everbody.
Problem I've seen with many used Florida boats is their just not cared for as well as a boat from Maine or Maryland or great lakes. The sun really takes its toll on.those decks, and canvas.
Agree with having a fast dinghy. We carry a 10.5 ft with a 25 hp. We've had five adults and a 95 pound dog on board it for a 3 mile trip. No problems. The one thing I don't understand is what appears to be a trend toward ribs with center consoles. I have on different occasions been aboard boats that had the CC ribs. If I can avoid them I will. Here are the main reasons why. They are more difficult to board when the rib is bouncing in a choppy anchorage. I always ended up banging my knees and shins on the console. The console takes up room that could be used for cargo or people. Because of the additional weight brought on by the console, seats, battery, etc. they are very difficult to drag onto and off of the beach. And god help you if it gets swamped while pulled up on the beach. This happened to me once. It took 5 guys to manage to get it up on it's side to empty the water. Lastly we carry ours face down on the foredeck when making offshore passages (for coastal cruising it stays on the davits of our 80's battle axe.). Don't know how we would do that with a CC.
Sailyard, sailspace and sailspot came to mind. Great video as always. I’m still in the extra glass everywhere camp, because they were not entirely sure how fiberglass would take to the abuse. Versus you can see sun light through the hulls of some boats. Mainly, because the critical part behind the wheel. Is going to fail at the wrong time for whatever reason 😅
Hi Tim, fellow Canadian. I'm hanging out in Florida mostly with an eye towards doing some engineering work in Grenada and the Caribbean including Guyana. I'm Guyanese/Canadian. I note that you really like the heavy duty, full keel sailboats such as the Island Packet. I find that persuasive. Here is my question: Would the orca attacks on sail boats near Bay of Biscay and the Gibraltar area succeed in causing substantial to such a boat? Is that a relevant factor that could influence the decision on what boat to buy? I really enjoy your videos and your unique delivery - very much leadership style. Cheers,
I just asked my friend to give me a pick at each of these price points this afternoon and then I come across your video tonight! Thanks as always! Trying to learn to be nautical 😉
I still have to say one of my favorite boats is the Chris-Craft Caribbean. It is a beauty of a boat. The Southerly Pilot House and the IP Sp Cruiser / Motor Sailer have great comfort and stability.
So what you are focused on here is staying close to home Carribean etc. What boats would you consider if you wanted to do the tradewind route further afield?
How about a Hunter Legend 43? We sail Hunter Legend 35 and really like the boat. Excellent sailing performance, Yanmar diesel, amazing storage, including a huge cockpit locker. Aft cabin (a bit tight) and a nice v-berth. The only complaint is no shower in the head…we use our cockpit shower with a privacy booth. It a fan of B&R rig, and the Legend series does not have it.
Tim, I will be looking to purchase a boat this coming fall. I was wondering, with the economy being so unpredictable at this time, would you consider doing a segment on the boating industry back in 2008-2009 during the market crash and how it affected boat pricing? I am trying to determine whether I should wait longer to purchase for prices to go even lower? Be well. Dario D
In the process of getting the Najad 373... Not quite suited for carribean sailing perhaps, but up north and out of season, I'm hoping it's going to be amazing.
@jackwalby6257 hey jack thank you. I've been lookin at Beneteaus Jeanneau moody tayana. 45 to 60 footers. Like something 2004 or newer. Prefer out of Florida or along the east coast. Forgot. Love the hunter 50cc
yo lady k. is it a reasonable idea to rip out and redesign an interior of a boat? i wanted to rip out the 2 aft cabins and make one open space in the back behind the stairs. or would you just be destroying the boat?
Would a 1987 34 ft Nordic be a good boat for a beginner? Im going to buy one this year and not alot of options up here in Alaska. Id want to sail it to Florida in 4 years when i finished with work
Hi! I can understand your concern over this - first of all it's almost impossible for a sailboat to flip over or "capsize" - the only exception might be in gale force winds, hurricane etc (which you won't be sailing in at all hopefully, let alone solo) It's more likely you might accidentally lose your footing and fall off - some people use a harness or tether to literally tie themselves to the boat In the very unlikely event the boat gets a hole in it and starts leaking, make sure to have a VHF radio and call for help, also it's a good idea to have a dinghy so you can jump in that if you have to Here's the most important thing, especially if you're a beginning sailor - try to always go out with more experienced ones at first, if you absolutely have to sail solo - keep a careful eye on the weather ahead of time, DO NOT go out in bad weather, always wear a PFD - and be super careful with your footing - stay fairly close to shore - have a VHF radio, in short use common sense and you will be fine, happy sailing! :)
Tim this and many other fears of being a newcomer to sailing would be a great video for people like me as well who want to “go now” but have fears. Thank you in advance.
Im planning on world cruising and want a tried and true passage maker. Thats why im going with a macgregor 25. Nothing says world cruiser like a trailerable sailboat.
I want a 50' pilot house with at least two cables. One aft one forward. At best able to do a crew/passenger of 6-8 people I like the kraken 50 but the price is a bit rich for me
@stevethurlow9059 I certainly wouldn't pass down a 31' either. I like the full keel design and the security that comes with a solid, well-built yacht. I don't care as much about modern luxury. Though one would be overkill for here in Chesapeake Bay, I want to do passages some day after my son is grown.
Depends, how many hrs for the engine, chainplates, riggings or even when the sails were replace. This 4 things can run well above 50K. Do the vessel has an AIS, batteries and inverter. That may add an another 30K. We will not even talk about a bottom job and life raft or dinghy. Suddently the 48K became an easy $150K drama and broken dream. Be careful for cheap boat, you get what you are paying.
what am I looking for ? ; being in the Canadian pacific I am looking for a pilot hose . full stop. enough Caribbean convertibles, what about a northern boat ? something with a heater ... and inside helm to steer for hours when it's snowing. Come on Tim when will you bring it back home and do a video for the locals ... EH.
I’m sure those are all good boats for different reasons. Otherwise they would not have been sold in the numbers they did. My perfect boat ? The one I can afford to buy and maintain. App name? - Oyster - pearl - shangriLa - First Mate - Rainbows - Coral

Kim&Leo here. We made it down to Ft Lauderdale from Annapolis on our Catalina 350, and we love it!

Beneteau owns Jeanneau, Prestige, Excess and Lagoon likely sharing suppliers for everything.
@@hterrebrood I know that but design is what distinguishes one from another, and Jenneau chooses the convex lights. Tim mentions it in another video.
