Great ranking Cody. Any reason you didn't include Tom Morga or A. Michael Lerner? I've always felt that Lerner's performance as the shape is underated. Would loved to have seen him in more scenes.

I thought Halloween Kills was solid. It tied up some loose ends of its predecessor AND recaptured the feeling of the first film in the flashbacks. Both things good sequels do. It also simultaneously functioned as a good setup film as well.
The carnage was awesome, and for me, this film cemented James Jude Courtney as the best Shape.
Only issues I had were some of the really bad dialogue and the decreased tension. Slasher movies never really scare me, but waiting for the payoff to the suspense is fun. However, I am in the camp of people who think the kills were good enough and plentiful enough to mostly justify that sacrifice.

Doesn't this effectively make him another post revival Jason Voorhees, which he was not in the first film? Whatever differences the two had fade away entirely that way.

All the mob and tommy scenes was hard to watch.
And for the characters I just don't care for any of them besides Laure strode and the sheriff. The granddaughter wanting to go hunt with a shotgun with no stock was just some BS.

I’ve always liked the original Halloween 2 slightly more than the first one. I think it captures the tension and ambiance of the original while having better kills, not to mention the best final chase with Laurie waiting for the elevator (gets me every time)

H2 is better than the original.

@Matt's home John Carpenter originally intended for Michael to be killed off in Halloween II and for Halloween to become an anthology series of standalone films that would have nothing to do with each other bar being set on Halloween night and going into the lore of the holiday. It might have worked if he'd started off with a better one than 3.

I saw Kills on Friday. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The lynch mob and "evil dies tonight" stuff was a bit silly, but I thought the rest of the movie was decent. The 1978 stuff and the way MM looked was great! Better than the previous movie.
Explain how you thought it was going to be bad? Nowhere in the marketing or leaks for this movie was there anything that would even remotely suggest that this would have been a bad movie? I'm confused by your comment
@@michaelshane5882 There were many pre-release reviews. Cody's review was very mediocre and I trust and usually agree with 90% of what he says. Other reviews I have read on Rotten and other sites also did not like it.
@@JP5466 well I think rotten tomatoes is a joke I don't ever give them any stock even when they sing movies praises I take it with a grain of salt.... It looks like a very competently made film even from the trailer so I figured I wasn't going to hate it even if I just thought it was middle of the road I knew I wouldn't hate it... I wasn't a big fan of the end product, at least not as big as I would have liked to be but I can't hate on it too much it accomplished what it was going for I think

Kills is my new favorite Halloween sequel. It just beat out H20 and H4 after all of these years.
I really liked Kills except for the extremely cheap and stupid ending and very dumb characters. The kills, tone, cinematography, score, etc all delivered
Really? Better than 4? Not even close. Halloween Kills is an unfocused mess of a movie. "Evil dies tonight!" That whole storyline was completely cringeworthy.
I enjoyed halloween kills. I'm not huge fan of h20. It's middle of the pack. I hate Myers in it and his stance reminds me of ghostface Lacks carnage candy but pacing is excellent with tension. Kills I have higher even though it flawed but 4 is in my top 3. Halloween 3 is fun but don't get cody love. Story is a mess. It's fun but a mess

2) You’re acting like Halloween 4 is such a far better movie that you can’t fathom someone preferring a technically much better made sequel (despite a poor script). I’m not saying one is necessarily better than the other, either, but Christ, man, Halloween 4 is essentially just a blander, bigger-budget version of Halloween. It’s entertaining, but it’s certainly not scary, and Michael is terrible. Kills is at least unique and has the elusive character of Michael/The Shape absolutely nailed down, like it’s seriously his best incarnation and portrayal since the original movie in ‘78. Bottom line: almost none of these sequels are what I’d call “good movies”, and Halloween 4 is included in that. Even though I like it, it’s fundamentally inferior to a much better movie it’s trying to profit off of, so I don’t see why you’d suddenly decide to start having standards with this series now when someone else loves the new movie. (Seems to be a common problem with Halloween fans in recent years.)
I told my friends who are seeing it this weekend to not go in with high expectations and know what movie your watching. To me this movie was used more to display Michael's supernatural power and his just brutal animalistic mindset(Hence the name Halloween kills). I didn't expect any major storyline advances or anything. All in all I enjoyed the new one.
Same, i love the new one. At least you can tell everyone put their heart in it and tried their best. You cant please everyone. I loved the brutality and the hints of supernatural, which was the only real logical progression from the series in order to keep a knife weilding villian coming back. I also LOVED the fact it picked up right where halloween 2018 ends, just like the original halloween 2. Saw it twice, enjoyed it even more the second time. My kind of Halloween movie
I loved it. I honestly have no idea what people want if Halloween Kills was bad to them. I think the bulk of the franchise is incredibly boring. Halloween Kills has some beautiful shots, Michael is lethal as shit. The hospital scenes got close to feeling boring a few times but the movie would switch it up enough that it kept me engaged. I know some people were mad at a lack of Laurie but I didn't give a shit. I just wanted to see Michael do his thing and Halloween Kills definitely delivered on that.

Yeah I’m glad your honest Your one of the most unbiased people when it comes to reviews. I might be a little bias as being one of the biggest Michael fans out there but I think kills the longer it’s out will go down as one of the best if not best sequel to the og. The throwback scenes were amazing, the kills were brutal a little unlike Michael but still great. Music was top notch carpenter deff brought his A game with the soundtrack and minus one really bad scene in the hospital where the mob went crazy and the guy jumped to his death the movie was great. I give mad props to Gordon green for trying something diff. The more u watch the more u realize there are so many elements that he tried and it will all tie together in ends. Is it perfect? No dialog is sloppy at times and stupid but overall I’ve been way disappointed by dumb sequels and finally this trilogy is one I will watch over and over again. Thanks Cody love your content

I love the number 8 edit lmaooo, totally agree with your opinion on both that film AND it’s predecessor. Hopefully the trilogy wraps up in a way that doesn’t let us down a third time.

I love Halloween 2 (1981). I still have it ranked second to the original. It feels like a continuation of the same night. I didn't mind the brother-sister connection. Also, this movie showed how to add comedy with Bud that didn't ruin the tension/mood in certain parts; something I wished DGG would've done a better job with in H-18 and HK. What I didn't like about this movie was the Samhain stuff. I always skip past this part, just like I do when Sartain puts on the mask in H-18.
I'm a huge fan of yours. And your opinions are very well respected. And should be to everyone. Ya scared me to death when u got covid. But seeing you more at home raising ur daughters, and doing what you love makes me as happy as a blanket with a fire in October. Love ya Man!

Yes!! Great ranking! I’m seeing Kills this week. My #1 is also the Original 1978 film, my #2 is Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2. Yeah. My #3 is Season of the Witch. Followed by the first part 2 and then H2O. Loved this review! Happy Halloween 🎃
I just watched Halloween Kills and oh Lord. The first hour and the last 20 minutes were 🔥 It had Rob Zombie 2 cleaned up vibes with Carpenter vibes. Very well done. The middle felt like someone else came in and wrote and directed it. That first hour was Golden. A little disappointed. But overall worth seeing. 🎃
You really made me appreciate Rob Zombie's Halloween II.. I have watched it since your original ranking video. It is really underrated. Annie's death and Brackett's reaction to it is one of the most heartbreaking deaths I have seen in any horror film.. it is also a nice examination of PTSD and trauma..Bold of you to include it so high in the list. Great list, Cody. I recently watched all the Halloween films. The only ones I hadn't seen before were Rob Zombie's two films, and I was surprised by how much I liked them, especially the second one. While I don't have his Halloween II quite as high on my list as you do on yours, I definitely agree with you that it is underrated, and is a very solid entry in the franchise.
My personal favourite is still the Original 1978 Halloween then Halloween 2 or 4: The Return of Michael Myers.
I saw kills on Friday and was initially a bit let down because i had gotten super hyped and excited about it the whole week leading up to it. But i watched it again Saturday and i must say i enjoyed it much more. Still probably would put it around 6th on my list

I rewatched all of the movies leading up to H-Kills and while I am not the biggest fan of RZ Halloween 2, I have alot of respect for the movie and how different it is. I will always praise a movie that has a unique story more than just a simple remake.

My ranking is fairly similar to yours with the exception of Rob Zombie's Halloween II (and with a judicious edit to remove some of the Weinstein-imposed murder scenes early in the film, I might be tempted to rank it almost as highly as you do). I don't always criticize the films for the same reasons that you do, but the list is still quite similar regardless.
The extended cut version of big Johns death was so great and narly. Greatest eye gouge ever.

Is really, REALLY sad to see pretty much every content creator ever having to start this kind of videos with a huge disclaim about personal opinions, just because the internet is so dumb.
Halloween 5 is the biggest missed opportunity out of the whole series, after that wtf ending of 4 my mind was going crazy like where is this going, is she gonna takeover Michael? Is history repeating itself? So many possibilities that goes nowhere, it's also one of the main reasons why 6 is so frustrating so it truly deserves it's spot though i hate resurrection even more but like Cody i can at least pretend that it doesn't exist.
H5 and H6 are on the bottom of my ranking cause of how they both completely ruin what could’ve been a great trilogy.
H6 could’ve been ok Imo if it kept Jamie as the main character and focused on her reuniting with Loomis.
@@mtb5431 Yeah first i was bummed she got recasted (no wonder Danielle Harris was unsatisfied with the role) they did the character so dirty as if she was nobody, also getting pregnant by Michael is so messed up... It could have been a fantastic trilogy but 5 and 6 went on ahead and ruined it.

Halloween 5 was no a 'missed opportunity'. It's the last truly great Halloween movie ever made. Halloween 5 is RELENTLESSLY anchored to the elements that made the original what it was, in the first place. After 5, there has never been another movie that centered on the triangular hunt featuring Myers, his victims, and Loomis. It's been all about Zombie's white trash version, and nonstop female empowerment as they beg Jamie Lee to come back again and again, and Busta Rhymes...No thanks...If you actually like Halloween movies, 5 is the best thing done in the last 30+ years...EASILY...

Couple notes are, Am i the ONLY ONE who likes H6 besides the end? lol Seeing Rob Zombies part 2 > 1 is a W, the dream sequence alone beats Kid Myers, Resurrection is the worst movie among the big 3! H20, H2018 & the OG1 are my three fave. Kills… and H2(81) are the biggest like.. almost my fave if they changed a couple things (dumb characters and the sibling plot)

I love 6 except the ending which I think is mostly fixed in the Producers Cut. Either way better its then Resurrection.

22:02 the Brackett house in RZ Halloween II kinda reminds me of the house in the background.
13:13 They were pissed off about the kills in the 2018 film when they heard about them as well. My only issues were that out of the returnees Brackett and Marion didn't really need to be there, some bad jokes like in 2018, the doctor and his wife being really stupid and some Laurie lines. Still my 3rd favourite though.

I am so glad that you love & appreciate Halloween 3 Season of the Witch for what it is. It's always been of my favorites. Depending on the day, It is my #1. It's creepy & awesome and the pic of the 3 trick or treaters on the posters is iconic.
Season of the Witch gets a lot of crap just because it doesn't have Michael. It's an outstanding more scifi type of approach to Halloween, the holiday, mythology. It really works for me. To me it's the second best movie of the franchise and I still wish Carpenter and Hill were allowed to continue going in this direction with the franchise, instead of Akkad shoving garbage Halloween sequels down our throats.

Putting 3 and Rob Zombie's H2 over kills and 2018 is an offense fitting of calling 911 tbh
Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007) is one of my favorites, probably 3rd on my list, first being Halloween (1978), second Halloween (2018).
I feel that his first one is criminally underrated and overhated. You can see alot of inspiration taken from Zombie's first one in Halloween (2018), and Halloween Kills, like the mask old and aging, the gas station bathroom scene in (2018), the sheer brutality and gore, all scream Zombie to me.
His 2nd one, oh boy, I hated it. Probably my least favorite Halloween, but I've never seen Halloween 6 or Resurrection, so there's that.
The script and the wildness of the film is always the problem for people but to me it’s top 5 due to it being scary and thrilling and it felt like a Halloween film unlike a few others
I liked it but I didn’t like how they made him come from a rough family. It would have been better if he came from a middle class family and just snapped one day. The dialogue is unbelievably bad and ridiculous the first 30 minutes.

I just came here after agreeing with every single point in your Halloween Ends review and now right out of the gate I'm agreeing with you on Halloween 5 being the worst of the worst. You've got my sub dude, keep up the great work.
My ranking:
1. Halloween 1978: A simple classic that truly showcases what a horror slasher should be. One of the best horror movies of all time.
2. Halloween 2018: Really great sequel to the original, loved the final act. Just didn’t like the Dr Sartain subplot that brang the movie down. That sequence with Michael going from door to door murdering people was GREAT!
3. Halloween H20: This movie brings back so much nostalgia and really brings a satisfying end to Laurie and Michael’s saga, which unfortunately was just undone in Resurrection. I actually liked the scream influence and loved the showdown with Laurie and Michael.
4. Halloween 4: Really good sequel loved that they brang Michael back , loved almost everything about the movie, final act is one of the best in the franchise. That mask though….
5. Halloween 1981: I loved that it’s a continuation from the original, loved the hospital setting , liked the tone pretty much the same as original just it takes off more quicker but it lacked the scariness and stalk scenes that the original succeeded in.
6. Halloween Kills: I really wanted to love this movie and after reading the leaked script I thought it would be amazing. But there’s many things that bring it down. It’s lack of suspense and tension, the hospital scene with the mob and the lacklustre throwaway humour. Loved how brutal Michael was but they cut out scenes that would’ve added to the movie like the scene they cut with Michael hiding behind the bush we saw in the TV amongst others, hopefully we will also have a better ending with the extended cut!
7. Halloween 6: Pretty incomplete, don’t like the thorn trilogy at all. Loved the fall atmosphere, the mask is a lot better than 4 and 5. It’s a fun watch but could’ve been so so much better. The ending is a big what the fuck but I can appreciate it for being different. (Also don’t like how they killed off Jamie)
8. Halloween 5: It doesn’t deserve the hate it gets , it’s a fun watch and there’s things I appreciated it but them killing Rachel off and replacing with Tina was a massive disappointment but the final act was top notch.
9. Halloween Rob Zombie: The way rob zombie humanises Michael was interesting but it takes away the scary and motiveless aspect of Michael. Once the story moves past Michael being a kid and his trash family it’s a good watch they should’ve just started with after Michael escaping the asylum but oh well.
10. Halloween 3: I don’t know what to say, it’s Michael-less. I can appreciate it for being different like with Curse but it’s just a meh movie, and I hate the sci fi elements in it.
11. Halloween Resurrection: I know everyone hates that Laurie was killed off in such a dumb way as she outsmarted and supposedly kill Michael in h20. But I like the first 15 minutes with Michael in the asylum hunting down Laurie but that’s the only thing going for the movie. The rest is a boring mess.

I think Resurrection should've just been a prequel to H20. Fill in the gaps between Halloween II and H20. That way, they could still get their Halloween 8, but they didn't have to retcon H20's ending.
As a big fan of Halloween 5, I can still certainly see why someone would hate it

Pretty much sums up the original Halloween Trilogy by my book. Can definitely agree with everything you've said about the H20 mask. Which leads me to wonder if some savvy ai deepfake creator could replace his H20 mask with the withered Halloween mask from the 2018 version and blacken out the eyes as it would be so epic!. An lastly agree with you about how they should've dropped Halloween III from the title and they should of just called it The Season of the Witch instead, possibly starting it's own spin off series as originally intended. My top five favorite from the Halloween franchise in order of release are Halloween (1978), Halloween 4, Halloween 6, Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills. Another good ranking video Cody.
Love the Halloween series (favorite after Friday the 13th). Here's my ranking
1. Halloween 78- a classic. Simple and so influential
2. Halloween 3: Season of the Witch- love this one, most unique of the series, fun and has a cool plot.
3. Halloween 4: Return of Michael Myers- love Jamie + Rachel a lot, ending, mask is bad though, still a great slasher sequel
4. Halloween 2 (1981)- have a soft spot for 80s slashers, love the hospital setting and some of the kills. Not biggest fan of sibling story though.
5. Halloween Kills- loved this film for simplicity and brutality of Myers, loved it way more than 2018
6. Halloween 6: Curse of Michael Myers- messy film but love Myers in it and the atmosphere of it. I can have fun with this one
7. Rob Zombies Halloween 2- like this a good bit, mainly cause it's Zombies free reign, just didn't care for the white horse part
8. Halloween 5: Revenge of Michael Myers- lower on some lists, has major issues, but last 40 minutes I love a lot
9. Halloween 2018- objectively better film than Halloween 5 and 6, rather rewatch those though. Love the look of Myers and the overall atmosphere but didn't care for rest of the film
10. Halloween: H20- not a big fan of this film, too Scream inspired for me, masks look bad and ending is ruined by Resurrection
11. Rob Zombies Halloween- no issue with a new direction but bad dialgoue and beat for beat repeat of the original makes me dislike this film a lot
12. Halloween: Resurrection- simply fuck this film

Kills was fun, but the writing above all else defused the intensity. Although, as a whole trilogy, I bet “Kills” will probably be the most entertaining part…

Other films in the franchise had waaay more entertainment value, plus brutal Michael Myers (ie Halloween 4-6, RZ Halloween, etc) This just fell very flat!
Absolutely always love to see Halloween 2 (2009) get some love. Did not at all agree with some of your opinions, but I truly appreciate your enjoyment of the franchise, and really dug your list. I only like 2 Rob Zombie movies. One I absolutely love (The Devil's Rejects), and one I like (Halloween 2). I'm with you. This movie just works for me. Brad Dourif. Laurie! And I like that ending with Love Hurts. I really like that ending. It just really gets me. I don't know why. I do not like Rob Zombie's Halloween or House Of 1,000 Corpses. I guess I think he can do sequels, lol.

Not many comments here so far, but the reception of Halloween Kills seems decent. I like that and im really hyped for Kills, but i have to wait 4 more days until it finally releases and i can watch it ... Seeing how Cody will rank it (very low i guess) will be a nice filler for that time :)

Right I had no idea why he did that... he said because of the movie’s tone? I simply think that Rob zombie’s version was a makeup for whatever bull crap resurrection gave us. Which was the worst for me and along with H20.
The other sequels after Halloween II was so bad because of the plot being jammed. So fucked that Rob Zombie had to revive the franchise by making his on version and killing it as he did it.

This ranking is a bit rank. But this is coming from a purist, and from a fan since 1980. H18 is as corporate as you can get. A horror movie with no atmosphere or spirit. The essence of Myers is all but gone in that one. At least there’s redeeming aspects in 5. And Resurrection should always be the lowest. Also, Curse has some great moments with Wilbur doing a great Myers, and the mask is the best since part 2. That could easily be above any Rob Zombie version.
Literally just watched Halloween kills, gotta say, I thought it was absolutely brutal and a decent entry in the Halloween franchise. Didn't find it frustrating at all, maybe after a couple more viewings I might find some annoyances, we'll see. Cause I know you had ya problems with it Cody and I normally always agree with you, so like I said, a couple more viewings and see if my mind change's.

@@WesternRAM I've seen every Halloween movie many times over, and literally hundreds of other horror movies, and Kills is better than most in the slasher genre. When it comes to the Halloween franchise itself, at a minimum, I don't see how anyone can possibly think Kills is worse than 5, 6, Resurrection, RZ1, or RZ2. Maybe even H20, although the scene where he kills Marion and the teenagers at the start of the movie is one of the best in the entire franchise, in my opinion.

Great rankings Cody. I really enjoy your reviews. I still cant wrap my head around either Rob Zombie films or Halloween 3 but I agree with you that H20 is a great film in the series. I do enjoy the current trilogy but I do agree with you that Halloween Kills had some moments that you end up questioning. I will be curious to see what happens with Ends. I still feel like Halloween 4 is the best sequel mainly due to the suspense factor especially with the house scene with everyone being locked in with Michael. Keep up the great reviews and I am looking forward to seeing the other new Halloween masks and Michael Myers portrayals rankings.

Appreciate the rundown as usual. And yeah, total agreement on the top 2. Halloween III is just a great, weird, horror classic with an incredible soundtrack. Tom Atkins isn't a hero, just a regular guy and that lends it a layer of believability even when things get fanciful.

Samauri Cop and Silent Night Deadly Night 2 fall into the "they're so bad they're good" category. There's just so many damn things wrong with those movies that you have to laugh at the absurdity of it all. That's the value of camp. A horror movie is at it's worst when it's bad and doesn't have any redeeming camp value.

Only directors cut scene worth anything was the full breakdown of bracket when he finds Annie! Give Brad an Oscar just on that scene!!! Then the music with flashback of you Jamie playing with a puppy, all innocent. Chokes me up ever time!!!
