How to hand tame a lovebird in 5 days

  • I got my baby lovebird (8-9 week old) last week. He is a beautiful Dutch Blue Peach-faced Lovebird. He is not tame but it is good that he is not biting :) Here is steps and results of hand taming in the first 5 days:
    Day 1-2
    Take your lovebird out of its cage. You should never try to work with a bird inside his cage. At the beginning, it will be hard to approach him, he will fly away even if I put my hand close to the cage. I find it a lot easier to use a perch.
    Once you get him out of the cage, for the first 2 days, I will just keep talking to him, and he will start singing right away once I play some videos with the sounds of the other lovebirds. Just let him get used to my voice and also enjoy the time outside the cage.
    Repeat 3-5 times a day for 10-20 minutes.
    Day 3
    Once you get some trust from him in the first 2 days, now you can start try petting him on his head, cheek or even beak, they loves being scratched on their neck.
    Repeat 3-5 times for 10-15 minutes each time.
    Day 4
    Now they should be very comfortable sitting and eating on your hand, you can teach them how to do step-up : Slowly and gently push your finger against the bird's lower chest, right above his legs.
    Reward the bird’s accomplishments. Bird will learn to associate hand = food.
    Repeat 2-3 times for 10-15 minutes each time.
    Day 5
    I am surprised to realize that on day 5, he will start flying to me.

    You were stroking your lovebird, on it's back, from head to tail. You will get away with doing that, on a male lovebird and on an immature female.
    However, when you do that with a mature, female lovebird, or even an immature bird, close to maturity, you will sexually excite her, which will likely trigger her nesting instinct and thus, her egg production.
    This is because stroking her from head to tail is exactly what a male lovebird does when copulating with the female.
    To put it in human terms, stroking her like that, isn't just foreplay, it is part of actual intercourse, to the female lovebird. As an egg is released from the ovaries, in a human female, and travels to the wall of the uterus, sexually exciting your female lovebird will cause her body to release her eggs and then further develop them.
    Triggering her to produce eggs will happen even if you do not have a male lovebird with her. The eggs she produces will, of course, be infertile.
    She will then go through all the stages of laying s clutch of eggs. You will have to allow her to sit upon the eggs for 3 to 4 weeks, or until she loses interest. So she will stay in her nest almost 24/7, only coming out to eat, drink, defecate and if you are very lucky, she may interact with you for a minute or two.
    If you take her eggs away from her too soon, she will, as with a laying hen, keep producing more eggs. Each clutch of eggs will take more nutrients from her body, more calcium from her bones. Vitamins and minerals, that would have gone to her body, will go into making the egg's shells, instead.
    If you are a breeder, you will know to include more vitamins, minerals and calcium, in her diet but the vast majority, of those who watch this video, will not know to do that. So, with each clutch of eggs, her body will be depleted of the very things she needs to have a healthy body and a long life.
    Isn't it amazing that just by petting your lovebird, as you would a cat, you can cause all of that to happen?
    As with any pet you have, they have things you should and shouldn't do.
    A parrot isn't a cat.
    Granted, it is nice to cuddle with both a parrot and a cat but as with any pet you care for, you have to learn what you should and shouldn't do, in order to keep them healthy. You also should learn those things, before you teach your bad habits to others, via a video on TH-cam

      Leobullet1 the point is that stroking her like that turns the bird on and it will lay eggs that are infertile and you need to feed her more calcium while she lays eggs.

    Ive been a Lovebird breeder for 20 years. This is not the way to tame a lovebird. There are 3 stages of taming them.
    You're main objective is to build trust this is true, but using a perch like that will scare a non tamed lovebird. Here are some tips:
    If you buy a Lovebird try to buy one WITHOUT its wings clipped. Clipping the wings makes training them a lot more difficult since flight is a main defense of birds. Take that away and they become very shy and scared of human touch.
    1. First stage is to use a towel to handle your lovebird. This stage can last 3 weeks. The idea here is you want to create a safe way to show the Lovebird you are not going to harm them. Every day during this stage you must handle them at least for 10 minutes or so. Eventually the Lovebird will stop fighting you to be handled in the Towel. Then you are ready for step 2
    2. Begin to allow the Lovebird to come out of the cage itself. Handle it for a few minutes then let it walk around your house a bit. Get in comfortable with its environment. This stage could last another few weeks.
    3. Now its time to remove the towel. You too will be tested because you still might think your Lovebird will bite you. If you did steps 1 & 2 correct, you will find they actually will be quite docile. From this point on you can train them to sit on your shoulder and learn tricks.

    • @mavericke3514
      @mavericke3514 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      No. Remember that a bird has eyes on its sides so it cannot see the towel coming from the top. When I say throw a towel I don't mean fling it. I mean think of it like a light toss. Once its covered with the towel you will see it calms down quickly.

    he already started off a little game though. It's completely different when you buy from a breeder who doesn't handle them. To me, he looked tame already he was just gaining trust for you. drugs_are_yummy I tamed (kind of) an Amazon like this. He would bite my hands and move away from me, but by the end he would let me pet around his head and touch his beak. What I did was that I hand fed him a bunch of treats, such as cucumber, chili and broccoli, I just kept it exciting and new. I also touched him gently with a stick, and he let me pet him with the stick around his head and under his beak. My advice for you is to not react when the bird bites you, just let him at it, an Amazon is a lot bigger than a lovebird and I wasn’t hurt. But whenever he stepped away from me I would withdraw too. That way he knew he could escape the situation if he felt too uncomfortable, and he learned that biting wasn’t the way. :) I also advice teaching it to step up onto a stick and then putting it down again, and chatting with it a bunch. Birds love noise! Making a lot of noise signals to them that you aren’t a predator, since in the wild a predator would usually stay quiet. Avoid quick movements, remember that you move like a predator, and the bird might feel really uncomfortable and threatened. Also make sure only to touch it if it allows you to. Forcing contact with the bird will NOT make it trust you. Don’t touch it’s toes when it’s crawling on the cage, that’s not allowing you to touch it. Focus on positive interactions. I would sit for hours on end in front of the cage, chatting with the bird, singing for him. Sometimes he would even join. :) and remember to be patient.

    • @fishfan2
      @fishfan2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@knogne5073 I was going to say the exact same thing. I think you not reacting assures them that you're not a predator and trying to hurt them. So if u keep on rubbing when they bite you they will stop and calm down.

    During the first day I got him home, I was so exited and tried to let him out, I think he got so scared and was flying around, he ended up hiding under the desk, which is very hard for me to reach him, takes me 1 hr to get him out. So I would suggest the new bird owners try not to take the bird out of their cage during the first day, just let them get used to you and your home first, and try to get them a small, fairly empty room, always make sure that there are no distractions such as dogs/cats moving around.

    I have had my lovebird 13 years now, he was 5 when I got him....his name is Chirpy....he can chirp for food, water, the window, lights, oven....it is amazing how intelligent these birds really are. I have spent hundreds of hours with him. I can fall asleep on the couch and wake and guess who is tucked under my neck. Chirpy comes to the call 90% of the time if I leave his cage open. I would have never thought I would develop the relationship I have with a bird, in fact my bird has been more fun than some cats and dogs. All these folks who say you are doing the training thing wrong....don't listen...as long as you keep your bird fed, watered and loved you will do just fine the same way I have. Remember I said he was 5 when I got him....your bird doesn't train in just 4 or 5 days but much like us will train well over the days, months, years that you spend with them.

    • @carly8822
      @carly8822  8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I remember that the first night when I took him back from the breeder he was too nervous, he was screaming and flying around inside his cage when we approach to his cage. I did some research online , as many people suggested, during the first 2 days, I just took a chair, sit in the room beside his cage, talk to him, play some music or video of the other parrot/lovebird singing. I noticed that everytime he heard the other lovebirds singing, he will start singing right away. Once he get some trust from you, you can take him out using a perch, I find him getting a lot more calm when he is outside the cage/on my hand, i would recommend taking him to another room (with no or few furniture) where he cannot see his cage, otherwise he will always want to fly back to his cage, also make sure that there are no distractions such as pets or children running around. During the time he is outside the cage, you can try feed him and give him some treats on your hand, let him associate hand with food/treats :). After few days, he should be comfortable siting and eating on your hand. Hope that will help. :)

    • @Sunseoks
      @Sunseoks 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I tried letting him out and hand feeding him. Sadly it did not turn out so great, I calming set my hand on top of the cage laying it flat, with the treats on top. The bird was too afraid of my hand and so it flew back into the cage, pacing back and forth. And, i did do this in a room with no furniture. After this, i left the room and the bird went back out onto the top perch. So I just decided to grab a chair and sit with the bird, talking to it, and reading a book aloud, so that the bird could get comfortable with me. I'll try to hand feed it again, if I notice the bird is relaxed and calm whenever I'm around him. Thanks :) Hopefully I can be able to tame my Lovebird.

    • @carly8822
      @carly8822  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Maybe you can try let him sit on your finger, at a distance (arm distance), don't put him too close to you, dont do anything, dont try to touch him. wait for 5-10 mins, you should notice that he will be calming down and becoming more comfortable as time passes, once you think he is calm, you can try move you finger a little bit closer to you, wait for another 5-10 minutes, move a little closer again, let him know that it’s okay and he doesn’t have to be afraid, repeat this several times a day, each time you should be able to let him sit closer to you, as time passes and he will realize that your hand will not hurt him. Good luck:)

It took me about a whole year till I could pet my bird. I would suggest making her used to eating treats from your hand. Hold some millet between your fingers and see if she can built up the courage to take it. It is a slow process, but you will get there!

    This is so unrealistic. My birds aren't completelytamed, I got them for about 5 month now and I'm still progressing. I can kinda feed them with my hands now but if I go near them with my hands they just freak out. It's normal bc they're not used to it. Your bird probably is,thats why its so calm. But people please be patient until your bird is ready, otherwise it will only be afraid of you or hate you. Also you should not clip birds, flying is important to them. If you want to tame them, just be patient.

    • @dimbulb6443
      @dimbulb6443 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He does alright.
      The bird is no longer scared of hands. While he has his own food bowl, I hand feed him everyday. At first, he would only take seeds that I held at the tip of my fingers. Now, he can eat from an open hand. I've managed to get him to put one feet on my finger, but he still refuses to step up.
      I've managed, with moderate success, to teach him to target the tip of a stick. Inside the cage, he goes for it. Outside, not so much. Well... a little.
      He has grown increasingly territorial. Inside the cage, he will be quick to bite. That being said, he will not bite if I'm offering food. Also, he doesn't bite outside the cage.
      I don't know how to stop this behavior. I'm positive its agression... he draws blood. And I react to the pain by moving my fingers, he doubles down and bites harder. I've tried rubber gloves (like doctor gloves)... be he doesn't care. He'll bite regardless.

    I have two love birds as well and i really don’t know anything about them. One is a male but the other is said to be female, but she keeps getting attacked by the male and i read something on google that females don’t get attacked by the males. She also got her wings cut by the previous owner and i thought that the wings will grow back after a few weeks, but it’s been months now and she still can’t fly. I’m getting worried and stressed about my birds. The female bird also has some bald areas on her body wich is concerning me really bad. I think it’s because of the stress and i also think that she pulls it out by herself. Even though we have them for months now they still bite us, the female bites the hardest. My mom gets bitten less by them wich I don’t know why when i forcefully pet my male bird everyday. When i first got the birds from my aunt, i thought they were gonna be chill and playful instead of really scared and biting us. I’m also worried that the wings of the female won’t grow back, was it maybe cut wrong? We release the birds everyday in the living room, the male flies everywhere and the female climbs on to a lamp on the ground. When they get close to eachother, the female tries to get attention from the male but then the male bites her again. Can someone please help me with all of this i’ve been stressing since we got the birds and i really want them to be healthy and playable instead of aggressiveness. Thanks!

    I have 2 conures, they're not tame yet because I bought them around 2 weeks ago. Thankfully they never bite at all. They're so gentle and one time my male conure bite me however it was so gentle is if it was to serve as warning

    My love bird was raised in a cage and he always wants to go back In it.

      criterion the cage is your birds safe place. If you patiently teach him that you are a safe place as well, he will only want to be with you.

    that’s unreal. My lovebird is crazy. He is scared even if i do not touch him. He gets scared when i stare at him or talk to him. I don’t think i will ever make him to trust me

    So I like to put my hair in a bun so when my bird is on my shoulders my hair isn’t in the way but my bird loves to go on my head and try and take out my bun 🤣

    Really good but how to get them in the cage for sleeping?

  • @jurrerincker3255

    For the people who this doesn’t work for: for some birds this technique doesn’t work because birds need time. Tame them by using positive reinforcement and not by forcing your hand up.

    I've had my bird for nearly a year. He has gotten wayy more comfortable with me having my hand in his cage, but i can't go near him, or he flies away. he's not aggressive what so ever, not even the couple of times i've had to catch him when he's been out of his cage, he's just really scared all the time. i can't really let him out either, 'cause he doesn't know how to get back in the cage again, and then i have to chase him around for a long time with a net to catch him.. i really don't know what to do. i mean, i get it, his past owner wasn't the best, but i don't know how to make him comfortable, if it'll ever happen.
    -side note, he's very talkative and will fly as close to me as possible when i start talking to him, so he's used to, and comfortable with my voice

    You have made more progress in 3 days than I have in 3 years with my lovebird I've tried EVERYTHING but nothing works. And I have had her since she was a baby but she just hates everything including me
