  • Many of you guys have been asking me to do a video on taming birds, so here it is! Here are some of the do’s and don’ts for taming a skittish bird.
    DISCLAIMER: Yes, my birds are already tame. This is not a full step-by-step tutorial video. The birds are showing some demonstrations so you can see parts of the process. This video focuses on things you should and should not do when taming your bird.

    So- this is extremely helpful!! I’ve had my bird for a while (more than a year.) I feel so bad for her, because I completely neglected her. At first I paid attention to her, but the thing is, when we first got her I immediately gave her attention, and not giving her any time to get used to or even see her environment. I made so many mistakes and I feel horrible. I thought I did enough research but I was wrong. Because of my inexperienced self, I caused her to completely not trust me. I want to start bonding with her again, but its really hard to, because she’s horrified of me. Any tips are appreciated!! 🥺💖

      Before giving her food, Try just sitting still and humming or singing before your bird, not looking at her. Do it every day same melodies. After 2 weeks, it will start producing serotonine in your birds brain and she'll get comfortable with you. She may even take over the melody. Same way, you can make a click sound with your mouth and then give her a treat, this way she'll associate the click sound with good or save and food. This way you can make the sound and she'll know you mean good when you put your hand in the cage.

    I need to give my bird more time, some people (especially my grandfather) tell me to just stick my hand in the cage until he’s not scared. They think I’m more afraid of the bird than it is him. Ducky is terrified of hands and foreign objects (think it’s because he was caught by nets a couple times to get to the bird shop and to come home with me. It upset me a little bit when the lady did that.)
    The lady also tried to tell me that the cage I got him was too big and tried to get me to buy one of those small house shaped ones.
    He already panics with my hand in the big cage that he can get away in! A smaller one would have been worse and forceful!
    He was parent raised and is currently 8 months old. He tolerates me by his cage but sometimes I feel like I should take a step back for a bit since his crest is always up when I’m in my room.
    I sometimes feel like he hates me (anxiety being a jerk), but I know he’s just scared. He’s never bit or attacked me, just runs/ flies to the other side of the cage and hisses at me. YES, I’m aware that hissing means he will bite if I don’t back off.. But when I Change his food and water bowls and put a stub of millet in his bowl, he never does. He just lets me know that he’s still afraid of me and to slow down.
    It’s not that I’m a afraid of him but a little paranoid about what I’m possibly doing wrong, if I’m scaring him or feeding him too much. I keep his bowl full. I need to get more toys for him but like I said before, he thinks it’s coming after him. He doesn’t like me changing his food and water, he only barely accepts millet spray. Doesn’t eat from my hand though which is understandable.
    He’s precious, but I feel like the time I took for research has no meaning anymore. I felt prepared. I felt ready, and am still willing to keep doing research, it’s just hard when what you’ve read or watched on video is not displayed by your bird ^^,
    Maybe he’s picking up on my anxiety of scaring him whenever I do food/water changes? He starting to see me less of a threat though since I’ve started opening his cage door for the days I’m home all day. I hope I’m on the right track ;-;
    Still the hand in or around the cage is a big no-no.

      from a training perspective, Im very happy you are looking to do the best for your feathered freind!
      you should never just stick your hand in the cage with a scared bird. This creates a negative association with you, working through tolerance is not a stable bridge to form a bond with a bird....like if someone were to be screaming at you until you stopped crying and then said "good job". if your bird is knew I always recommend my clients to never force your bird out of a carrier or leave them in a cage...you want to make it clear YOU and a trustworthy person that is there for your bird. I assume (based of your comment) your bird has been with you for a while so I would recommend target training and letting your bird out of the cage. Leave the cage door open and never force them to go out the cage is a safe place for scared birds, in order to break this you need to let your bird be comfortable with all its surroundings. you can offer treats like seeds in the door of the cage. Target training is the very first thing you can work on, this creates a language between you and the bird and overall proper training can form a strong bond.
      as for getting others to spend time with your birds, socializing is important with all birds. but you need to make an effort to educate the people you work with about your birds boundaries, make the experience very enjoyable! you cannot expect people to understand what is means to work with a bird.
      Pet store birds often come very timid of owners, but the worst thing you can do is give up.
      I recommend channels like Flocktalk, Birdtricks, and Live here for training advice
      (healthy diet also goes a long way with training)

      Before I look into videos about it though, which I most definitely will, how would you suggest I try target training with him?
      I feel that I may have a bit to go before I can put anything near him. He doesn’t trust me enough to come out of his cage.. even if I leave the room for a couple minutes to see if the issue is me being there ;-;
      Edit: he’s only been with me for 3 weeks

    • @estie_birbs281
      @estie_birbs281 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @UCXBIa39rxgshvg4NqIRwiqw what I would do is spend as much time in the room, while you are in the room leave the cage door open he doesn't have to come out. put a few treat in his cage, make you being there enjoyable for him. the truth is most of your interaction with your bird will not be with them on you. Rather them and you enjoying each others pressence.

      Estie Your so helpful omg- my bird doesn’t bite me, just gentle soft ones on my hand, as a sign to get away. He/she turns his back to me a lot, and I don’t want to give up. His okay with going on my hand but i didn’t know that they only go on your hand because they don’t want to fall.. j won’t be doing that mistake again. I don’t take him out of the cage a lot, but his starting to get out of the cage by his self because I like to leave the door open for him! His still scared of being held, bht that’s okay.
      I’ve had him for 1-2 weeks. I don’t know the gender her, because it’s 2 months old!

    I have 3 birds in total. 2 cockatiels and a budgie. My first cockatiel was from a pet store simply bcos I felt really bad at her condition being in a small cage. Star her name was very afraid in the beginning, but I had zero experienced with bird so I simply grabbed her and bit me really hard. She refuses to step on my finger and always stay away from me BUT she loves it whenever I sing Twinkle2x Little Star to her. Then, I got another cockatiel when he was 3 weeks old only I name him Sunny. I hand-feed him until he was ready to eat on his own, taught him how to fly. He is very attached to me and thinks I am his property and I can do everything with him. I call him my shadow and tail. Then my budgie Sky is my adopted, my friend found him in their garden but couldn't find an owner so he brought it to me. Sunny follows me around the house, do crazy things with me while the other 2 would watch from a far. I decided to stop pushing the other 2 bcos they simply are afraid of me. And my Sunny took lots of my attention. Everyday it's always like this Sunny always with me, eating with my cat, following me EVERYWHERE. Sitting on my head etc... then one day, Star the pet store scared cockatiel flew on my shoulder sit there and stared at me. I was shocked & froze. Since then she copied everything Sunny does with me EXCEPT sitting on my finger. She would come face to face with just as long I don't ask her to step-up. I respected that. She sits even on my hand just not my finger. Now, Sky the budgie realizes that he is on his own most of the time and so he decided to follow me too everywhere. Come very near me when I am sitting. I realized, I need to give time and in their own accord. So picture me now whenever I am home. There are 4 creatures following me around. 3 birds and a cat. Privacy inside the bathroom flew out of the window.

    Honestly this helped so much. I got my first birds a few months ago, two budgies. I’ve been following what the person at the pet store told me and what I found online, and it kept spooking them and making them uncomfortable. Most sources I find tell me to force the bird, and it worked so I thought it was fine. But after I kept doing it my budgies seemed to dislike me.
    Now one of them doesn’t like getting near me and the other can be kind of scared.
    This really put a whole new way of it, and makes me feel a lot more comfortable with this. Before I felt like I was doing it wrong, but I guess the process was just a whole mess in itself.
    Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I’ll be sure to check out more of your content, you really seem to know what you’re doing.

    I have very little experience with birds. I grew up with cockatiels and parakeets but I never spent that much time with them. So I was shocked when, over the course of five months, the green cheek conure that was at the store I worked at gradually became bonded to me. It took patience, a lot of work and a bit of research, but I guess our personalities clicked enough that I was able to get her hand tame. She's now the first bird I've kept in years, and I could not be happier with my decision to have purchased her.

    You’re a rockstar! Your info is refreshing, thorough & encouraging 😄Last few months, I’ve been researching pet birds to be sure it’s right for me (& the bird!). Sadly, I believe this vid is the first I’ve seen that says Do Not bump a bird’s chest to get him on the finger (!!!), & first time I’ve heard as to what that action does to the bird & why they step up 🥺

    I actually tamed my super skittish cockatiel thanks to your advices. Now we’re best friends! She used to just walk further away from me when I got near the cage when I first got her and now she just starts jumping around and getting excited to go out and step up on my shoulder, hand or head when I get near to open the cage door.

    Thank you so much Zelle! This video was perfect to help me gain confidence and success with taming and helping my budgie, Phoenix, to bond with me. My neighbor brought him to me just before Thanksgiving 2022 after a relative found him in the mouth of a (fortunately!) gentle neighbor dog. She knows nothing about birds and has two pet cats and a poodle at home. She heard from another neighbor who told her I keep finches and doves. I have been thinking about getting a small to medium sized parrot for a companion bird as the other species tend to be more less ornamental (hands off). My prayers were answered when she rang the doorbell with this little bird! I just got him to step up on my fingers with the training method described in this video!! Thanks again for great advice!! I subscribed to your channel, too!😊🙏🏻🦜

    not all of this advice is totally accurate overall, but everything is 100% accurate for a new bird/bird owner.
    My birds know when they are doing bad things and my birds have somewhat strict rules in exchange for far more freedom than most captive birds have. They're completely aware of it and in-tune with their environment and so i can in fact use negative reinforcement (not that it works - but it wont take away their trust in me).
    Your birds are super well acclimated to you. Well done.

    I have two budgies, Flash and Blueberry. Blueberry came to us with a deformed beak and scalemites. (Spoiler alert, he came from petsmart.) the store said he'd live a month because of his condition. He celebrated his fourth bday a bit ago, and now is living the dream. He's got a massive cage, his own toy box, (it lives under the birdcage), lots of attention, and although he isn't very hand trained, (he'll sit on your arm and shoulder) he is a wonderful boy with a very happy life.

    When I was going to learn my bird to step up on my finger, I used hours and hours at first to gain his trust. Like just sitting by his cage and getting him to know me. Then I took a millet and tried to get him to eat it, then after lots of eating and getting him to know my hand, I like just slightly (not hard) pushed the millet on his stomach, and he stepped up! He was not tame at all and it took about 4-5 days I think. So basically you just have to be patient! I am still working on him to get him tame.

    Honestly, I have pretty tame birds 😇 But, I think Edward is the only semi-tame bird I ever had. Oddly enough, my VERY tame birds have actually bit me but Edward NEVER has in the past 3 years. Every bird is different. Edward never liked being touched. It was a heartbreaking conclusion that I had to realize that he just was never going to be tame. He just pants so much. He literally looks a few steps from a heart attack. I was only able to give him head scratches just twice in his life time. Just recently, our vet said he has a heart condition and he has a very irregular heart beat. She suggested that some birds, no matter how hard you try, just won't be as tame and actually suggested that getting Edward panting so hard might not be in his favor. I guess I realize to accept his boundaries. You're really close to 1 thousand followers! I hope you get there soon! 😊🤗😊🤗😊🤗😊🤗

    i use Targeting and the reward system (jockpots and such). Its so triggering watching my family try to have my birds step up, I want to die inside but hey my birds like the free rewards. I personally feel (from my experience parrot training) Targeting is the first thing you should ever teach. I have been feeding my bird medicine so I have lost some trust with my munchkins because....I didn't syringe train them.....so towel it was!!!! hehe Im evil I know but if it helps them feel better then so be it, they can hate me all they want. Planning on starting my own channel sooner or later and training it really hard to explain fully...I use piont systems so I always have graphs and charts analising my birds health so I need to work according to those statistics....I used to train people parrots as a part time job and I dont anymore, becasue something really sad happened and it started to affect me and....unfortunately effected my birds in the process.

    • @ElleAndTheBirds
      @ElleAndTheBirds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Targeting is very important! My birds aren’t syringe trained either, I’ve tried and as soon as the medicine comes out they’re done. Luckily when they had infections they didn’t lose trust. I’m so excited you’re starting a channel!! Wow I would like to train other peoples’ parrots, I used to go to my local pet store every week when I was younger to train all their birds, but now I don’t support that store. Awe I hope everything’s ok..
