My echeverias stem was too long. I chopped it off and I'm waiting for it to grow roots. However, it has 4 massive and beautiful flower stalks on it. It's beautiful but I can't figure out if the plant is dehydrating itself to feed these flowers! Please let me know as I do not wish to shrink the succulent any further even if it means I have to cut off the flowers. Thank you! Jess

In my experience, when you behead a large Echeveria and leave the stem of the parent plant in the pot, new plants (offsets) will grow from the base. When they reach a suitable size they can then be cut off, potted individually and grown on.
What happens to the stem that you've cut the plant off of? Our Dick's Pinks have 12" green leaves with stalks coming out of them, and the stem is resting on the ground. If I cut the whole plant off from the stem, would the stem grow new green leaves?
Hello Carol, it depends a little on the plant itself, HOWEVER - Usually they send out new shoots from the stem. Often from the base of the stem. These can be left, or removed to make new plants. Let us know how it goes, Will try to make a video on this process soon...
I live in a cold and often cloudy place, where during the winter I don’t get much sunlight and often times the window is too cold to set plants by anyway. I’m too poor for an indoor grow light 😅 so I was wondering if this applies to mini echeverias as well? If so, should I do this at the start of winter and it’ll regrow in spring? Or should I wait for the end of winter? Also should I remove the roots so the plant doesn’t get root rot? Thanks :)

If the plant is healthy the flower stalk should support itself. You could use a thin bamboo stake to support it if you are worried, however, that should not be needed in most cases. When the flower stem dies back you can remove it.

I'm in Central Florida and know that our climate is challenging for succulents but want to collect more that might survive. I'm not looking for guarantees, just varieties that might survive.

The store I purchased from has it in a weird bark and perlite mix which is different than my other succulents. I use the soak and dry method but I may have left it dry too long or overwatered it. Also concerned my plant has root rot. Will beheading and repotting shock this plant too much? Please give me suggestions. Thank you.

Usually we do not water for the first 4 - 6 weeks, a light mist spray each week is enough. The moisture in the cutting and potting mix itself is enough. However in very dry mix we would water very lightly after a week. and mist spray lightly each week. I will try to get a more exact video on this soon. HOWEVER the soil should never be wet.
We let them die back and collect the seed first, and usually leave the stem to dry out and pull it away when it is ready. However you can cut them back if you do not want the seed and really do not like the look.
Something a slow release Osmocote Plus. Or Osmocote Smart-Release Plant Food Plus Outdoor & Indoor. Name seems to differ depending on which country you are in.

Hello Michele, Questions are good. I will try to get James to do a seperate Video on pests and diseases and potting mix questions, in the meantime the following may be of help. For the Mealybugs - Lots of remedies including horticultural soaps such as Natrasoap and Neem Oil. Most can leave marks on the foliage and remove the 'bloom' that is a feature on some types, Some people use a 50% - 70% Isopropyl Alcohol spray which seems not to mark the foliage. For white fly, those yellow sticky traps are a good preventative. After that its horticultural soaps, neem oil spray etc, OR introduce Ladybugs which are a natural predator. Again the sprays can damage foliage, so be careful. The gravel on the top is just a decorative gravel, available at most nurseries. The soil mix is similar to a cactus and succulent mix, again available at most nurseries. I will see if I can get the actual recipe for you in the next video (Coming Soon)

If they are growing well you are doing the right thing. Watering depends on the growing medium, the pots you are using, climate and sun, so no one rule fits all and you have worked out what works in your situation ....
johnny he meant how long do you wait for watering the newly potted cutting. So if I understood the answer is some weeks, definitely after new roots sprout. Is it right?

when you pruned that echeveria by the head cut, what happened to the old stem? will that regrow from being beheaded? or do you just bin the old root
Keep it, it may reshoot from the base, or the stem, or even both.

May be Echeveria gibbiflora types however not sure exactly which ones you mean. Let us know the time stamp and we will try do a positive ID.

Most commonly propagated form head cuts. It is possible, although very difficult from leaf cuttings of very young plants.

I have an echeveria giant blue that has produced long stalks. What do I do with them? Should I cut them off and repot or leave them alone.
The long stalks are most likely flower stalks. You can remove them if you want. Any rosetts around the base can be potted up.
