Hi Tom, my name is Lionel, I'm French and I've been learning English for the last 50 years or so and still learning! I don't have a typical French accent (fortunately) and my accent is somehow an international one given the various influences I had since the very early stages, let's say a British substract with many influences from American English (I lived in the US for a while) probably a bit of Canadian and other origins as I worked in many countries using English as a working language. Congrats on your videos that I find entertaining, fun and refreshing. I've learned a few expressions already! I particularly like your accents videos as for years now I've been trying to place English accents without much success. I have a few expressions that I like a lot: "by and large" and "(every) now and then/again" come to my mind and you may consider incorporating them as their meaning is not obvious at first

I would also like to suggest an accent video about Time Team, featuring the long-running regulars on the show. You could even link to their TH-cam channels for your viewers to watch, Time Team Classics and Time Team Official.
Time Team (and the way they visit local areas all over the UK) has been a really fun way to get familiar with lots of British accents that you don’t often see featured in movies or TV (or even on celebrities/public figures naturally). I am an American native English speaker and I enjoy the diversity of English accents and learning to identify them both in the UK and the US (and maybe would learn to speak with some one day).

Hello Tom :) Thanks a lot for the video. This is what I love for practising :) Well, we also drop the h sound even in my own accent, in Turkish. İt's a very distinguishing feature for us that help others understand where we're from. By the way, our standard dialect is Istanbul Turkish, just like your received pronunciation. One last thing, could you please analyse the accent of Çağlar Söyüncü who is Turkish and plays in Leicester City?

  • @pirataspirata3762
    @pirataspirata3762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I like the idea behind this video but I just wonder why you only talk about one particular feature on every accent and why you didn't choose those that are really distinctive for certain accents. E.g. what you talked about regarding Kyle Walker and the Yorkshire accent, the ʊ sound, you could say that about probably half of the English national team. It's not helpful to distinguish the Yorkshire accent at all, all it really does is tell you that someone is from the North of the country but that still leaves a lot of options. I think it would've been interesting, for the Yorkshire accent especially, to also look at TRAP/BATH words and ɪ or ɛ for words ending in -y.
Also, I think it might be helpful to keep the snippets of the players talking a bit longer so that it might be easier to catch a few distinctive features and get a 'feel' for the accent.

Thanks again for this incredible video!
I really love these kind of videos!
When people are thinking of a British accent (mostly of America) they probably think of an RP accent, like Emma Watson’s accent.
I don’t think that many people in the UK are speaking like Emma. When I think of an British accent, my mind goes to Brummie!
Ohhh I love a strong Brummie accent!
I know that many people don’t particularly ‘’appreciate’’ the Brummie accent or it’s considered as an ‘’lower lever’’ accent?!?! But I would love to been able to talk like Jack!
I haven’t heard of the Macaam accent before!
I know that Jordan Henderson I’m also from Sunderland but I thought that he is speaking with a Scouse accent?! Am I wrong?
Maybe because he lives in Liverpool for many years??
My top favourite accents of England are
    1. Brummie
    2. Scouse ( *Liverpool* ✊🏻⚽️🚩🚩🚩)
    3. Cockney
Could you do a video about the Welsh and Scottish accents?
I think in Edinburgh they have a softer accent in comparison with Glasgow…

I’d be interested to know if Brits raised by parents who spoke with very different accents (for surely they’re allowed to date and marry in these modern times 😬) tend to choose one parent’s accent over the other, use both interchangeably, hybridize them, or simply speak the way the majority of their classmates did regardless of how many H’s were dropped at home. It’s an interesting thought. My friends in my hometown in California, whose parents are immigrants from the state of Gujarat, India, learned Gujarati, Hindi, and English in that order. They spoke Gujarati and some Hindi at home, and learned English once they entered school. Their parents speak English as well, with strong Indian accents, and the kids speak English with Californian accents extremely close or identical to my own. But they can imitate their parents’ Indian accent very, very well, and that is a trend I have noticed in a lot of people who have parents who speak English with strong accents!
