Getting into the engine bay is your first challenge on the more modern Transits. What a crazy idea of using your ignition key to open the bonnet. I have a Mercedes E class 320cdi, and getting the glow plugs out of that is a scary job. The last plug I replaced, I ran the engine upto temperature and used my battery impact on its lowest setting, and that worked. The glow plugs look very similar to the ones in the transit. I also did all four plugs on my Mini cooper D with the BMW engine. They were also frightening to get out. I did test them with a battery as you did, the problem being they are only 4 volts, so the only working plug I had popped with 12V on it.
I know! you'd think they might have changed it for the customs after having so many problems previously ha .. yeah we have a little impact gun for glow plugs & it seems to work fairly well tbf 👍 .. I was temped to go that bit further to get it out but kept panicking about having an issue when the van needed to go back on the road the next day ha. ive had a few troubles with them on the mini before 😖, the worst ones we seem to suffer with are the vauxhall 1.3 cdti, they are piss thin! 😬
Will be doing this myself on a 2.2 Custom “as you mentioned is the same engine” was advised to get it up to temp to beforehand to aid in loosening them, have also heard good reviews about Inject crack spray from euro carparts so will be giving them a good soaking on & off the day before, I do have time on my hands so can take time which is a different story for most who can’t have their van off the road for to long. Thanks for that video it’s given me a heads up so will be able to dismantle things quicker without having to think to much 👍👍
Due to the lack of infos for the Transits in Germany, your channel is very helpful. I changed my glowplugs on the same engine. Also cylindre 1 was very tight, but I managed to unloose ist (took a day ;-)). The result at the end: No fault in ECU, all glowplugs with the same resistance, but in coldstart under 15 C the engine is limping for several seconds. The same way as it does before! What can be the reason?
Hi mate , what would have to be done if the glow plug dig break on removal, and how would you take out the remainder, not to put a damper on things, what if the glow plug thread went wrong, as I had this with a sparkplug, I had to remove the cylinder head and get a helicoil done ,
Yes its not ideal! lol , I really didnt want to risk any issues on the night as the van needed to be back on the road.. there's a few tactics id of tried to get it out first but if I did snap I have a laser kit for drilling , repairing & retapping the head..Its a good kit but still can be very tricky to do in suitu.. worst case the cylinder head would need to come off to do it
Ive had the tip of a plug break off while fighting to get one out! Obviously couldnt tell until it appeared in my hand 😠. Of course it then needed the head off so did that before removing the other 3(which came out, no issues)🤷🏼♂️...typical! Id recommend warming the engine up and soaking the plug with plusgas or similar for an hour or so.
This engine is fitted in the later 2.2 defenders, i've changed glow plugs in one of these and to be honest it was a bit of a nightmare. The engine is fitted length ways and theres a bunch of coolant hoses in the way, access to the EGR valve is dreadful, why on earth did they design them with glow plugs under the inlet manifold??
Haha I know what a pain! I’ve got to fit a egr cooler on a ranger soon , the 5cylinder version of this engine same , sideways on and cooler runs across the back 😖
I see noticed the glow plugs have 4.4V written on them. Wouldn't a 12V test voltage damage them? I ask this because i got 2.2V on all 4 glow plug connectors. Also, how long should the glow plug timer run for?

@@diydaly And hear I was thinking the Mercedes glow plugs were the thinnest of them all. They have the tensile strength of a carrot.🤣😂🤣

glad to help, yeah definitely helps getting it hot first and well worth trying some sprays 👍
Extraction of the glow plugs is recommended on a hot engine. They'll loosen so much easier 👍
👍
Well done Mr Daley..great video and commentry..best out there by a mile..keep up the good work👍
Thanks, will do! 👍🤣
Thanks for the video, helped me to change them in my peugeot boxer. Luckily all off them came out easy.
Glad it helped 👍👍
Wow that was quite a faff. Love how the TopDon has pride of place in the drivers seat 😎🤣🔧😊
haha only the best for topdon!
Short story, you can get a spanner to the screw beyond egr,on the manifold
Absolutely brilliant mate,fantastic mechanic thankyou,👌👌
Thanks 👍
What do you think of the vibratory low torque impact guns to remove the glow plugs?
we've got one! decent tools tbh mate

Have you checked the supply to the plugs is ok? Also injectors can give starting issues in these
@@diydaly Hi, great video and explanation 👍 how would I check the injectors for a fault? Would it come up on the scanner?
Not an easy access, quite a lot of work for this job..in some cases labour cost is more than the parts. Good video thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍
Thanks , glad you liked it 👍
So if one of the glow plugs won't undo, leave it yes? Ford Mondeo 2.2 tdci cheers!
Yeah I would , not worth snapping one.. it'll be a right pain 😖

You do need to be careful with some glow plugs as they are not all 12v ; best to use a multi meter really
@@diydaly I got true. I didn't connect batteries direct to test plugs. I tested with ignition. I got 2.2V on all glow plugs tho
@@techniciansinc6048 what model vehicle is this on? If it is a transit that’s not enough, they do suffer with the loom piece that goes to the plugs

Would you change these if your having trouble from cole start, even if jf there's no fault codes?
Tbh when there dead they always throw up a fault so probly not
@@diydaly would anything else be worth checking for cold start issue's on this engine?
Great video as usual. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! 😃
Why didn't you measure number one in place ?
Great video thanks for sharing buddy.. eBay or Amazon won’t post the TopDon to Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks mate! arr gutting! thats odd can't see why that would be an issue

What can you do 🤷♂️ But Thank you for the reply back
Glow plugs shit idea being so thin ..Always get up to temp and spray loads of oil on them ..Put anti seiz on the threads when replacing.
Mines booked in ford dealers to get them done £366.70 😢 BUT once done will last years
👍
Are you still at B.E..?🤔
Yeah I am 👍
