Finally a real review with both the good and the bad. Very thorough, knowledgeable, and love the comments comparing this GX with its sibling and competitors. Subbed!
I have an OT+ and I’m pretty happy with it. The seats got plenty cold enough for me, so I don’t get that complaint. The issue with the 10 speed is very valid. Living in the city the vehicle behaves very oddly going from stop light to stoplight. I personally think it’s an engine tuning design decision, like it’s hesitant to use boost in first gear when it first gets rolling. It crawls from a stop until you push the pedal to half way.
Maybe the seats are vehicle to vehicle. But I’m glad you are enjoying your truck. As for the tuning, I hope that’s what it is because that can be updated.
Have owned two previous model GX 460 models. The engine and transmission blows away the 460. Not great gas mileage but not the reason you buy one of these. Almost every time I take this out, someone stops me and asks if I like it. I always say, HELL YEA!
I really like this review. It is fair both good and bad. I find it interesting that people coming from previous Lexus or other luxury brands hate the interior and say it’s cheap. People that want to overland or that are coming from broncos or 4Runners think the interior is ok or even nice.
I have the 550 OT Plus, and my father said he will take it if I decide I want the LX 700h Overtrail, that was just announced. I love my GX and recently drove it from Utah, to Vancouver Canada, then back. I do find the interior to be a bit underwhelming, but I do use it for camping in rugged places, so I like that tbh. I like hearing different perspectives on it. Good video and review! Everything you said about it seems 100% genuine and not tailored, and I respect that 😊 Liked and subbed!
The LX 700 will be longer than the already porky LX 600. Yes, it will have front and rear lockers but the GX 550 OT will be much better unless you need the space/seating
@@racebannon2332 The LX 700h will not be longer than the 600, because it is still the 600, with a tiny 20 horsepower hybrid motor that is sandwiched between the engine and transmission, and the batteries will be in the back of the cabin, under an optional 3rd row. The GX will have a hybrid in 2026 and that will have the same wheelbase as the current GX 550. For example, the US market Land Cruiser is sold globally, and in some markets it is not a hybrid, and the length is not changed, with or without a hybrid systems. I got to drive a 300 Series GR Sport on an off road park course, during my scholarship in Australia, and have wanted one ever since. This LX 700h is the closest I'll get to that in the North American market😊
First, props for the old school Trans Am "thunder chicken" t-shirt! As for the truck, it's not for me. The front looks like a Cylon Raider (Battlestar Galactica, anyone?). The interior is a little spartan for my taste, especially at that price point (I'm predisposed to Range Rover). And I'm not a fan of the "ipad stuck to the dash" look, regardless of the car. Having said all of the above, I am 100% sure that this thing will still be running (and the electronics will still work) long after I've been planted 6 feet under. I mean, it's a Toyota. 🤷♂ And as for off-road capability, I am equally confident that it is eminently capable.
Great review I gave it a like .. but man I live in Canada it does snow over here and what can be better then gx550 over trail ? I thot about land cruiser if it doesn’t have that heads up display issue like you mentioned I be going for land cruiser then
I don’t think you should decide based on that one issue. You need to drive both and see. They are very different experiences and both are good. But you will know which one you want right away from driving them because they are so polarizing drive experiences.
Good review; however, the Overtrail doesn't offer full leather seating. It has those leather inserts, but the seats are synthetic leather. That is disappointing for a luxury vehicle at this price range. 6:13
@@CJ-rk5eg I have driven both. Actually I have driven all 3. The LX has the best suspension for a combination of off road use and on pavement use. I would rate the LC second. The LC really comes to life off road, especially in tight narrow technical trails. The GX third based on suspension.
I mean is there really any vehicle of this size/weight that has a gasoline engine that does much better? Now if we could get some diesel engines over here in the US🤔🤔🤔
Well I didn’t have that trim to review this time. But it doesn’t have all the off road stuff and it’s more tailored to be a people hauler with that 3rd row.
I always give an honest review. good and bad. if you dont agree thats fine. check others comments for balance. or check other videos to check your hypothesis.
The 300 Series is not sold in North America. We now get the eastern sold Prado, marketed here as just the "Land Cruiser", as it has been in the UK since the first gen.
@@PointShiftDrive you said all Toyota and Lexus products…. So I just noted. Great review by the way. Do you know any info about engine 3.5? It was recalled by Toyota 22-23 y. Appreciate if you have any info. I am about to trade my lc300 to lx600. But there is the same engine and hope in 2024 they fixed that engine. Thanx
@@ViktorIvanovich-pm5eg no problem! As for the 3.5 L and the 3.4 L V6 TwinTurbo some of those engines had issues during manufacturing. Some debris got into the engine blocks and later on as caused those engines to fail. What I'm happy about is that Toyota recognized the issue quickly and is not doing a Band-Aid solve. Instead the replacing engines as part of an official recall.
Are you kidding me? With all that plastic how can it not feel cheap? Argh! I stopped watching after that. As a proud 460GX owner I feel insulted. Good luck with your V6 turbos, but pleased don't mislead folks.
I own both, a Gx 460 and Gx 550 OT, both are great. Dont dismiss this new GX 550 OT, it's a special truck. I am not to found of the non OT versions other than new styling for that I will keep the GX 460... again the new 550 OT is bad ass!

Really like this type of review. Concise, honest, no nonsense.
@@liang306 appreciate the feedback 👍
I would definitely not call it concise. The opposite is what I thought. Exhausting amount of unnecessary babble. Just some constructive criticism.
@@JohnJohnCrusher Thanks for the feedback on my work. Ill stride to do better in the future. Either way, thanks for watching John.
Honest review without all the fawning of some other reviews; your impressions are spot on!

This is common in cars these days. my Macan Turbo is the same way. It's a lazy throttle map and tuning issue designed to improve mpg.
I have noticed the same on 2024 BMW X5…

Glad to hear. Hope it's not confirmation bias. Most people wouldn't admit to themselves if they felt it was a poor $80,000 purchase decision

Wife had a RX, all that constant beeping really is annoying. Need to give owners a way to turn off the shit on the gx.
I agree. Too much is too much
They should give you the option of a vibrating steering wheel to turn off the beeping or a vibrating seat alert.
Great video. I feel like I could go see one of these at the dealer and never get all of this detail!

Its not for the masses. But yes. it will outlast all of us
Don’t be so sure about lasting forever. Turbos don’t have the long term reliability of a naturally aspirated engine, time will tell.

the seats make the floor even and make the car more universal snd utilitarian… without the third row you may ss well get the LC
The LC has the same seat set up. its a little better but still not flat. I think if you really need a flat rear, you might be a candidate for a truck.
The intensity with the massage seats can be adjusted for intensity in the seat massage menu
@@ronaldtom7638 yup. Had them on full intensity

Lexus used neulux leather in almost all their cars... Its actually pretty good and guilt free.
The power train and suspension in the GX is superior to the LC.
It’s more refined but I wish it didn’t have that off the line sluggishness
@@PointShiftDrive passing power is stronger in the GX, compared to the on road test drive I did in the LC.
Wrong. The suspension is better in the LC.

Which one do you like better
the GX 550 or the Land Crusier?

Possibly turbo lag

Hello sir
GX has call by Toyota cause has problem engine …
Thanks 😊
No recalls on the GX so far.
Incorrect
I have not seen any official recall or TSB on the GX. Yet.
The Overtrail needs the 3rd row option... to compete with Defender and the new Armada Pro4x...
Not every suv needs to be a minivan or bus
I don’t think it needs that 3rd row but remember that you do have that option in the Luxury trim version of the GX.
No it doesn’t and you camp t even compare both. Body on frame is way more heavy duty especially for off-roading. Defender is fake off-roader.
No it doesn't, eod.
Exactly -- No it does not. It needs that room for gear. Not taken up but seats folded into the floor.
