In this video, I'll show you exactly how Thai อักษรขอมไทย speakers adapted the Khmer script for their language over 1,000 years ago. You'll see the cool quirks that are uniquely "Thai" about the Thai Khom Script. This script played an important role in Thai history right up until the 20th Century. Once you learn to read it, a whole world of literature, art, and magik (yes, with a "k") will be unlocked for you. ถ้านำภาษาขอม มาเขียนเป็นประโยค จะสามารถแปลเป็นภาษาไทยได้ ตัวอย่างเช่น อัตตาหิอัตตะโนนาโถ(ไม่มีแป้นพิมพ์ภาษาขอม) แปลเป็นภาษาไทยว่า ตนเป็นที่พึ่งแห่งตน ซึ่งประโยคนี้หากให้คนเขมรมาอ่านจะเป็นประโยคที่ไม่มีความหมาย เพราะภาษาขอมไม่ใช่ภาษาเขมร อักษรคล้ายกันแต่ความหมายแตกต่างกัน มีเพียงคนไทยที่ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นพระภิกษุเท่านั้นที่สามารถแปลภาษาขอมให้เข้าใจความหมายได้ครับ
เพิ่มเติมครับ ภาษาขอมไทยมีมาก่อนพระพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งถูกใช้โดยชนชั้นวรรณะพราห์ม ผู้ฝึกฝนวิชาคาถาอาคมใช้เวลาฝึกฝนทั้งชีวิตกว่าจะทำได้ ซึ่งไม่อาจถ่ายทอดความรู้นั้นให้แก่ลูกศิษย์ได้ เนื่องจากลูกศิษย์ไม่สามารถปฏิบัติได้เหมือนกับที่อาจาย์ฝึกฝนบำเพ็ญภาวนามาทั้งชีวิต อาจารย์จึงได้นำสิ่งที่ร่ำเรียนฝึกฝนมาบรรจุใส่ไปในตัวอักษรกลายเป็นคาถาอาคม เมื่อใดที่ลูกศิษย์เขียนหรือท่องคาถาบทนั้นก็เปรียบเสมือนได้ฝึกฝนมาทั้งชีวิตดังเช่นอาจารย์ นี่เป็นสิ่งที่อาจารย์ของผมสอนมาและสั่งให้บอกต่อคนรุ่นหลังต่อไปครับ
ผมเรียนวิชา ขอมไทย ที่มหาวิทยาลัยรามคำแหง ตอนนั้นอาจารย์ท่านบอกว่า เธอเรียนแล้วอย่าริไปอ่านภาษาเขมรนะ มันคนละภาษากัน😂 พอเรียนต่อ ป.โท ที่ศิลปากร ก็ เออ จริงอย่างท่านว่า
มันออกเสียงคนละแบบ อารมณ์แบบเขมรกัมพูชาเอามาทื่อๆ ลอกใครมายังไงก็เอาไว้แบบนั้น ไม่มีการปรับ ทั้งๆ ที่ใช้กับเสียงตัวเองไม่สมบูรณ์ แต่ไปแก้ไขปัญหาตรงที่การออกเสียงแทน ซึ่งแสดงถึงสติปัญญาและนิสัยมาก😂😂😂 เขียนอย่างนึงออกเสียงอย่างนึง งง ไปหมด
ส่วนอักษรขอมไทย ถ้าคนไทยเรียนหรืออ่าน จะบอกว่าง่ายโคตรๆ เพราะไม่ต่างกับอักษรปัจจุบันเลย เพียงแต่กลเม็ดการเขียน กับรูปฟอนต์ต่างกับปัจจุบันนิดหน่อย ยืนยันครับ ง่ายมากๆ แต่ถ้าไปเขียนภาษาบาลี จะต่างไปนิด เช่น ไม่ต้องใช้สระ ใ ่ ้ ๊ ๋ (เพราะบาลีไม่มี) แถมตัวสะกด ตัวตาม ของบาลี จะยุ่งนิดหน่อยว่าจะไปไว้ตรงไหน แต่พอจับหลักได้ รับรองครับ เขียนได้ปรื๋ออออ เลย❤

@@ppp64731 เมื่อ 40 ปีที่แล้ว ตอนม.ต้น ตอนน้้นก็มีสอน แต่คนไม่ค่อยสนใจกัน ผมได้มีโอกาสได้เรียนนิดหน่อย ตอนนั้นถึงได้รู้ว่าขอมไม่ใช่เขมร เพราะครูก็บอกว่าขอมไม่ใช่เขมร พอเรียนถึงได้เข้าใจ เสียดายตอนนั้นผมไม่ค่อยสนใจเท่าไหร เลยได้เรียนนิดนึง
ตอนนั้นเรียนอยู่ ร.ร. ตะพานหิน จ.พิจิตร อาจารย์วิเชียร ไม่รู้แกเกษียณยัง
Honestly, I’ve never seen any Caucasian has such a deep knowledge of Asian languages at your level. I’m impressed! What you are doing is really educational for me and I’m sure for a lot of people who are willing to learn and open mind. I oftentimes came across TH-cam videos relating to overlapped literature/cultures between Thai and Khmer and let me tell you, there are always dramatic arguments at the comments section as to what belong to who. I’m so disappointed and tired of it. Please don’t let it bother you. There are many people appreciate your great contributions!

Thank you very much. We as Thais are truly appreciated. Your explanation is very clear and truthful. Your example and your logic to compare to English language are on point. We as Thais has been trying very hard to explain to Khmer people in every aspect but they kept on denying the facts, Khmer people only rely everything on Angkor Wat without having a heart to learn the truth. We, Thai, are accepting our roots both languages and cultures came from India and then we adapt, develop, evolve, and reserve until become Thailand that people around the world see today. On the contrary, Khmer lost their own culture and identity throughout history due to colonialism and several wars. When Khmer reached peaceful time, Khmer leader asked Thai to help restore their cultures by teaching Khmer Thai cultures. After decade of teaching and absorbing Thai cultures, Khmer starts claiming Thai cultures as their own and calling Thai as Theif. That’s the root cause of several conflicts between Thai and Khmer. Thais try very hard to show all evidences, not only from Thai but from several countries to back up our evidences (China, Myanmar, Japan, French). Khmer people only respond with looking at the wall. Khmer people don’t understand the concept of adapting and evolution. I think that’s why you got attacking comments from Khmer. Good Luck. It’s nothing wrong to tell the truth.

Being a Khmer with a set of Thai grandparents on my mother's side, she taught me exactly more or less as you show in your video. My mother is perfectly bilingual in Khmer and Thai. So I knew from an early age how the Khmer script and Thai script are related. You're amazing.
Hi, I'm majoring in Archeology at Silpakorn University. You said it every word. We read Khom and Khmer. This cannot be combined, this is the real story. But scholars still haven't found the deep stone principle of who exactly is King U-Thong. We must take this matter to study again. Thank you for your understanding of the language.

They haven't tried to claim Javanese temples yet, but don't realize it's a baseless claim because they're (Javanese) half Austroasiatic too.

The ancient Khmer gave the so-called Tai mercenaries as Siem in the Khmer script, but the Europeans transcribed the word Siem using the Latin script as Siam. It is just like the French transcribed the name Kampuchea as Cambodge, while the English Anglicized it to Cambodia, The so-called Tai mercenaries lacked the abilities to say the word Khmer correctly. They said Khom instead. Even now, they still can't even pronounce the word Khmer correctly. They say Khamen instead. Khmer people have history in Southeast Asia since the 1st century A.D., while the so-called Tai people have only begun in the Khmer established territory during the 13th century A.D. Cleanse yourself of your ignorance and appreciate the truth. The Khmer of old were people with brilliant minds who could convert abstract ideas into physical temples for humanity to enjoy. They were also masters of engineering, creating canals and waterways travesing the land to manage the abundant water brought by the Monson rain. In the modern time, Cambodia has been cut off from most of her ancestral seas, but the government still reaches back to the historical water canal of the Old Khmer to revive it for modern transportation to gain independence from the neighboring countries.

Cambodian people today are Tai people from China?

Firstly, were Varman kings and brahmins who created these scripts ever call themselves "Khmer"? Nobody knows. Ancient Thai people who lived alongside Varman rulers never called this script "Khmer script". I trust Thai ancestors.

Also just to give you some notes:
1. For religious texts in Cambodia, we also have and use a font almost identical to the Thai Khom script font. That’s probably why some people get confused about the whole stealing thing.
2. We do have the special character for Ba in standard Khmer បា
3. Also in olden times, we also used to write the sub consonants as ตัวสะกด up to around 1960s. Notice that the same system is also used in old Lanna writing. I think it’s just a common way to spelling across mainland SEA within specific period of time and not something only unique to Thai Khom spelling
4. Fun fact - some sub consonants in Khmer and Thai Khom scripts are the mirrored versions of modern Thai scripts. Ex. ม = ្ម น = ្ន

Included that Thai Yantra came from Khmer Yantra. Khmer wants to claim cultural hegemony but Khmer people have received the wrong knowledge and study of history from the French aristocracy and with the Khmer government Trying to say that Siam received everything from Cambodia is not true.
Even Angkor Wat was built by the ancient Thai-Khmer not built by Khmer people.
The Khmer people in the past did not have a king.
Khmer was just a tribe of slaves who immigrated from the Malay Peninsula and became a slave to serve the Thai-Khmer people in Phra Nakhon.
After the decline of Thai-Khmer power. The Khmers formed a rebellion under Chao Taeng Wan and ruled the city of Angkor Wat instead. After that, Khmer again came under Thai-KHOM rule which changed its name to Siam. Cambodia was ruled by the Thai for another 500 years.
In conclusion, everything in Khmer. Khmer people have never had their own culture or characters. The Khmers received every influence from Thailand-KHOM and Siam respectively. Because the Khmer people were just servants. Today's Khmer people do not truly study history but it was absorbed in the wrong way all this time without knowing or they may know but try to distort the history of their own nation by appealing to the culture, letters, songs, and arts of the Siamese nation. It will be easier to make Khmer known to the world because people around the world don't know Khmer. ☹☹🎗🎗

Hey! take a look at additional information why khmer has spoken number different from written numbers. The Khmer's number system (spoken language) counts with five-based number (1,2,3,4,5,51,52,53,... ), like African, but Khmer took the written numbers from Khom Thai (0-๙).
I watched the video several times and the way you explained that is how Khmer would read it because Khmer has subscripts and stack on top of each other like the word ស្រ្តី

As a Cambodian living in Paris, I'd like to say thank you for your clear explanation about Thai Khom Script and Khmer Script. My parents used to live in a refugee camp in Thailand during the genocide in Cambodia. They later immigrated to France and I was born there. I am sad that my parents' motherland is still poor and less developed these days. Hun Sen, the Cambodian leader didn't do any good things for this country. He just ruins the country and allows China to build a secret military base. His decision will lead Cambodia and ASEAN into troubles sooner or later. Hun Sen is getting richer while the Cambodians are getting poorer. In Cambodia, the education system is still backward compared to neighboring countries. Cambodian people lack of critical thinking. I am sorry that some Cambodians misunderstood you, Stuart Jay Raj. Please forgive them.

In Thai elementary school, we teach only modern Thai scripts which are mature and comform to how we talk nowaday. Very few saved for researchers and necromancers are still learning Thai ancient or said Thai-Khom.
Khmer people had just woke up from decades of fighting and tried to collect what left from their lost decades on cultures and social characters. Who can blame them for all confusion in social media! More education and researches from their government and academia will fill the gaps and heal the pains.😊

Very interesting clip Stuart! I don’t think most Khmer people have any miss-understandings that Thais historically have borrowed from Old Khmer (again, Khom is only recognized by Thailand)…. The Khmers do not make the distinction between the Khmers of Angkor and themselves (the direct descendants).

Thanks so much Stuart... Lovely video that I was looking for, comparing Khom to Khmaer text.. However, it is still very debatable, and most unlikely that Khom is not Khmaer. Even more possible that it's the other way around... that Khmaer has borrowed Khom language instead.
Actually the most languages scripts in the world , it’s always identical or similar
to each other because it improves the words that one nation language doesn’t have it (or it doesn’t have word to say or to use it). But the conflicts is the only some people don’t understand much about it. That’s why, they tried to claim and impact to each other. Think about the world okay. Most countries use it. ก่อนจะไป โห่ฮา ใส่ข้างบ้าน เราก็ต้องยอมรับตัวเองก่อนว่า คนไทยเอง ก็ใช่ว่าจะเข้าใจที่มาที่ไป

In elementary school academic, Thai khom was missing. Only Lai Sue Thai during Sukhothai era, then go to nowadays normal Thai. Never heard and it was never mentioned that Thai khom is in the way along development of normal Thai script.
