      Actually most are real. The CEOs go under cover to fing out what's going on in the company without having management know its them. Do you think Brenda, in this case would've been in the breakroom sitting on her azz if she knew the guy was the CEO of the company?
      No she wouldn't, she'd be on the line making it look like she's the best manager they've ever had in that position.

      In most cases, having a manager or supervisor pitch in has little positive effect. Usually, an entire production unit of several employees and equipment would be required. At best, supervisors can replace workers for breaks to keep production going. Also, working supervisors can open the company up to liabilities if workers are injured.

      When I first started in the full
      time workforce after graduating
      school many decades ago,
      a real manager could and
      would do any job in the department.
      These days, the management
      are those with the business
      degrees that have no practical
      experience at the business that
      they manage. Many businesses
      are owned by investment groups
      that don't know much of anything
      about the business they own or
      the customer base that they serve.
      They go by printed out reports of
      costs and profits and whatever
      the employees do that can be
      logged onto a report.
      That would probably be ok if
      the management would let the
      experienced reliable workers
      do their jobs and keep the company
      rolling along and not interfere
      and get rid of the sand baggers
      that seem to be kept afloat by
      the good employees.
      Need to get back to merit based
      hiring first off to cull the dead
      weight

      @@JohnH20111 So, you actually believe that is going to stop the person from retaliating? I’m not saying you are wrong, also not disagreeing with you.
      However, either you have been lucky enough to have worked for companies with good experiences. Or you have a this notion, though it be a naive notion, that you would have the time, money, and wherewithal to
      1. Prove it
      2. Find a lawyer to represent you
      3. Not spend more money for the lawyer than the suit itself is worth.
      Point, unless the evidence is overwhelming, and you actually have proof that management “actually retaliated against you” . And believe me when I tell you that their H-R department has covered their behind with your firing or resignation.. The time, money and resources that you expend to bring them to justice. After the cost of the lawsuit, lawyer and lost time. The amount you would receive in return would be scraps.
      You would probably end up settling out of court anyway ( if lucky ) and have to sign a NDA contract. ( Non-Disclosure agreement )
      Then guess what…. You would be blacklisted from every other company in that industry. Particularly the parent company which owns a conglomerate of companies that you would be banned from ever having employment with.
      Last point, you had better have an airtight case, because the system is designed to overwhelm your finances to the point of bankruptcy or serfdom. A lawyer isn’t going to touch the case unless they absolutely know that either you have the finances to pay them, or the case is profitable enough so they get paid a LARGE enough percentage of the money awarded to you.
      Piece of advice, if it’s not documented, it don’t exist! And you have to ask yourself, does the cost outweigh the benefit.
      They are counting on the fact that 90% of people don’t have the resources or wherewithal to actually be able to bring a civil lawsuit against them. Much less even have the notion or logic to actually prepare, document and retain whatever evidence necessary to justify and prove that the retaliation actually occurred.
      Like I wrote, I am not disagreeing with you at all. But the real world isn’t set up to be fair. Like it or not, you have to ask yourself, is it worth it monetarily, and is this battle worth your reputation and repercussions that will follow you around forever…
      Again, I agree with you, but I hope I have given you some insight on why the undercover boss should just fire the managers or supervisors. Would really like to see a follow up with the employees a year later. Just to see if they are still employed, or were fired or just quit.

    Margaret Daniels was one incredible woman. She was my manager when I worked at Walmart. On my first day, I saw her working in the back like she was one of us…she ran that store so well. Hard-working, organized, very approachable. Definitely my best boss ever. I hope she sees this one day and knows how much I appreciate her amazing example.

      I was a dishwasher in prison. Shift started at 4 AM. It was a messy and hard work.
      Eventually, I work myself. I work my way up to warehouse manager. Arguably the best job in the joint. I was in charge of all receiving for the kitchen. That consisted of unloading weekly semi trucks with our normal food order in addition to donation of expired food goods.
      Access to literally unlimited amounts of. Expired street food from Kroger. Literally made me a D kingpin of legal contraband. I had anything you wanted. Cartons of eggs, pallets of Häagen-Dazs, ice cream, yogurt, milk, cheese. You name it!
      For those don’t know access to protein is in one of the most valuable things behind the wall. Most of us are into working out in bodybuilding, and you absolutely need this stuff to put on size.
      Like I said, it was the sickest lick. Near the end of my term, there were 20 pounds of beef tips that showed up missing. The captain had us under surveillance and knew that we did it, but couldn’t figure out how we did it.
      First they spotted the missing product, then a week later, they noticed every unit seemed to simultaneously be having a cookout with fresh beef! Carne Asada burritos galore!
      It was on the scale of Andy Dufrane, sipping beer on the roof of the prison with his fellow inmates. Feeling free for that very moment, making the impossible possible.
      I never got in trouble for it, they were never able to prove my hand had touched it. Although I did lose my precious job.
      The kitchen lieutenant, and I had a good laugh about it, and life goes on!😂

    I worked at a firm doing drafting and a rush job came in that I needed to come in on Saturday to do.
    My new boss (VP) came in as well and I was fully expecting him to hover over me every minute of the day.
    He sat down at the drafting table next to me, took out the oldest set of drafting tools I ever saw, and did more than half of the work.
    Now there's someone I would march through the gates of Hell with. What a fantastic manager.

      Awww this reminds me of my dad. He was a draftsman from the 50s till 2010 and he was always the one showing up on the weekends and staying late into the night to help the lads. That's why the guys were loyal to him and went with him no questions asked when he changed company. And they got promotions and pay rises. 😂 Loyalty matters and in a time it's hard to find a good manager you should ALWAYS cherish them. 😂 My dad retired almost 15 years ago and all the lads send him Christmas and birthday cards and gifts. Because he had their backs.

      I was a Sergeant in commercial nuclear security. Came up on a guy in a really crappy, isolated post, doing the head bob, about to fall asleep.
      Relieved him of his weapon, told him get some fresh air, cup of coffee, hit the head, whatever, and I'd stand his post for the next 15 minutes or so. When he came back, he was right as rain.
      I could have just written him up, but that's what being a good leader is, you take care of your people, and your people will take care of you.

    I believe most factories have supervisors that just use their postions to slack. I have worked at Walmart for 8 years, and it happens there also. Very aggravated

      It's literally every job. Management does less physical labor and is more focused on organizational affairs, i.e. people managing. It's why you go to college, so you don't spend your life doing backbreaking work.

    I worked at a franchised McDonalds where the employees were literally family. Our owner, his wife, and both their kids would find a spot to pitch in, whether it was doing fries, working counter, grill, or just backing us up. Their employees were all longtime (with the exception of the teens) employees. We got bonuses for Christmas, and my boss even loaned me $60 for groceries and gas. I paid him back with my next paycheck. RIP PaPa Ron💙

      Nope. We quit jobs. Not just because of management but because the wages and slave labour. When you work an entire month and still cannot afford the basics, then you realise the slave you have become. Modern slavery is rife in the entire world.

    I started working at large investment firm in 1989. One busy day at the stock market about 500 orders came through. My boss who hired me in the firm. Position was branch manager. I will say his name Larry Norton. A Harvard grad. He wore stylish suspenders. Anyway he rolled his sleeves up and came back in the trading room. He was entering orders like there was no tomorrow. Much respect for that man. Will never forget him or his work ethic.

      I worked for a company that put on a fairly large event. Hundreds of people. One of the people who attended was our CEO who flew in on the corporate jet just for the event. End of the night all of us worker bees have had a long day between setup hosting and now teardown but we've got to get the event broken down and hauled out. At one point I think about how tired I am and I lean up against the wall for a minute. I look over and see our CEO. Instead of hopping on the jet and leaving he has a giant bundle of tablecloths over his shoulder and is headed for the kitchen . From what you described in your post I think you probably felt about as good about your boss right then as I did about mine when I saw that. Some people just inspire you to do better.

      Thats actually how everything is designed, the whole reason for moving up is delegating what needs to be done, meaning you arent paid to do labor anymore, but to think and manage.
      Otherwise there is no point to any of it.

      @@blacksabbathmatters open your own company you will see what it’s like working for free. Customers always want a deal employees want more money but will cost you a couple hundred dollars in a hour. Then try to play it off like they didn’t just make 5 simple mistakes that cost $60 a mistake.

People like you think owning a business is buying a paycheck. Its not, its a retirement plan. And if its a restaurant, dont ever expect to make any money until you sell it.       @@loganmyall660 I don’t think you have started your own business. If I’ve years with no income. Give me a break. If you don’t make money shut your business down. Cause it’s not a business. Most people don’t make money the first couple jobs. Because that money is reinvested into equipment for more jobs. That is how you make money. But like I said when you have people cost you hundreds in an hour and try to play it off like they didn’t. Killed any profit for that day. That’s when business sucks cause you still need that job done to get paid. But now your no longer making a profit. Most of the time you lose your profit because you try to give a deal which doesn’t allow for mistakes. But there will always be stuff you can’t see. 35% over cost of labour and materials is the average. This usually results in a 15-20 percent profit. See what it looks like when people don’t talk out their ass. I have also help with restaurant that started. Very low profit margined also if not steady they die out. Plus in our area we have one of the highest amounts at restaurant to people so loads of competition.

    This is why my hubby is a well respected, liked supervisor; as he NEVER asks ANY of the workers to do anything that he has not and will not join in when needed. Sometimes even at his own expense, ie later doing his end of night paperwork.

I know what it means to be the laborer as well as the person in charge, and I can't tell you how many times I witnessed complaining by those who don't grasp the purpose of someone in a leadership position. Their purpose is to steer the ship and look ahead--it's NOT shoveling coal into the furnace.

    I've been a manager at 3 different companies, and I have never sat down and watched employees work while I slacked off. And I mean NEVER. if you're not constantly moving 24/7 and keeping up with those around you. You do not belong there and especially don't deserve to be called a supervisor.

      I worked at a hotel for years for a guy like you, he knew every moving part of that place and nothing was "beneath him". He would wash dishes, pour beers, clean rooms, etc., whatever it took to get the job done, he was always ready and willing to put in that time. I still consider him to be one of the best people I know, even though I haven't worked there in a long time we keep in touch.

      @@007Hutchings I used to work in the toy industry and was a key holder and supervisor there. My job required me to be up to date on cartoons and games. Toy companies would even get our staff tickets to films based on their toys so we knew what the kids were asking for and the stories they wanted to recreate. You can’t judge someone’s work ethic just because they play games and stuff. You don’t know their story.

      At the end of the show he brought both of them in his office at the same time and gave Brenda a little talking to and she didn't much like it! She was very defensive and you could tell by her demeanor she was not happy that she got called out.... That's how most managers/supervisors like her are! They think they're above doing "their" jobs!

    I’ve had so many supervisors/managers who didn’t understand that it was their job to help pick up the slack. They literally thought a management job meant only doing paperwork & observing other peoples work.

    2 years ago I was at a Kroger's in the city I live in. They were short handed employee's because of covid & the lines to check out were really long & only 1 register had a casheir. Well I saw two managers just talking to each other laughing & telling stories about family get togethers. I said don't you think at least one of you should be up there helping in the check out lanes since she is getting so over whelmed right now. Both replied that a casheir was not their job title. I said you are managers & your job is to make sure all other jobs get done properly. They told me I have never been a manager & managers should never do lower paying jobs. ( which I had for most of 18 years at a service place & always helped the people out I was managing to get caught up). I told them they were just two lazy to actually do work & should not be managers. Took over 1 hour to get checked out. If I was their boss they would be demoted to chashiers or let go.

      I’ve heard some people say that managers don’t do anything, which is far from the truth in most non retail businesses. But if someone has only dealt with leadership similar to what you described, I understand why they think that
      I worked in a similar industry once; I had a second job as a line cook. When I first started, the chef would do inventory once a week and place the order, then maybe do a few of the easiest prep items. Wouldn’t help on the line for more than a two top. When dinner service arrived, he’d say he had paperwork to do and then he’d be back to help us, then he’d sneak out the back door and go home. When the regional manager caught on, she had a talk with him and he resigned the next week. Lazy chef, great manager to nip that in the bud
      Whenever the regional manager was there, she made it a point to know all of the employees by name and I frequently saw her either serving behind the bar, on the line or helping the dishwasher. All this while still taking care of her responsibilities within the company. It’s always great to see middle management not act like they’re above doing the dirty work; it shows that their position is not adversarial but rather a specific role within the same team

    Absolutely! Managers/supervisors today feel they're above the work. As a manager/supervisor/team leader, I always tell my co-workers/team that if I ask you to do something, it's something I have/will do myself, if I can. In order to be respected and have a good team, you MUST be willing to jump in.

      You can’t be a seasoned manager if you think that.
      You should not need a staff of the best to run things you need skeleton crew of A1 people rest are functional to good.
      As for firing you should mentally classify everyone you are responsible for as A, B or C.
      A’s need little supervision or guidance. Just explain what you need and feel comfortable that they will come thru AGAIN.
      B’s are competent but will go off the rails if left to themselves for to long.
      C’s are the trash and need lots of supervision to get barely adequate work out of them. You fire them when you can’t take them anymore or you are sure that the replacement is unlikely to be as bad or worse.
      Remember there is lots of C-grade people looking for work. Twice as many as A and B combined.
      A’s are damn hard to find and you just never know if a applicant is a A or B.

    I worked as a manager on duty at a retail store. I worked whatever dept needed me. From cashier, assisting customers, packing orders, unloading the truck, stocking and merchandising. I learned that from watching good managers. And I was even able to get the associates that didn't do alot to work on projects with no problem. Good supervisors will always lead to good production and morale! ❤

    When I worked heating service, I would always jump on the dirtiest jobs and get them done. My boss once asked me why I didn't send the new guys under the building to run pex for heating loops. I told him that I would be at some time, but in the meantime, I didn't want them thinking that any of the jobs were below me and that I didn't want to do the dirty work I gave them to do later. I never had problems with most of them.

    As someone who worked my way up from a lowly position to a supervisor and eventually manager. A fellow supervisor and a mentor gave me a priceless piece of advice. We had to wear badges on our uniform, on the back of the badge he taped a simple message. "Caution this badge may go to your head and cause you to be an a-hole." That message stuck with me to this day and any time I've supervised or managed people, I've always been one to lead by example. Never have people do something I wouldn't do myself and coach honestly and praise often. I've been lucky to have a career and lead lots of people.

    When my grandfather was still working, he owned his own business. I saw him doing everything from greeting customers, selling appliances,and managerial duties to going down to the basement to see if he had a spare part off of another appliance for a customer whincouldnt afford a new part. He did service calls when his staff was overwhelmed, helped with deliveries if needed... All of it. I've even seen him clean the showroom windows. I always looked at his example of how to be a good employee and a good manager. It hasn't failed me yet.

    My father never sat at his desk at his Chocolate Manufacturing Company… he always went to where the Ladies(always hired older women 40’s-60’s) to pack the Novelty Chocolates in their Seasonal Boxes.     Supervisors like that have to be let go. You need someone to step up to the plate and hit that home run for the team. Promote the good workers that not only do a supervisors job, but also help out when it’s needed. I’ve walked away from jobs that do not have good management.     I worked in a care home for 9 years, the last so-called manager and team leaders we had were so lazy that when we carer's were rushed off our feet, they wouldn't pitch in, and instead cancelled the one break time we had, 8 hours and no break.

    I worked with numerous people like they show and I frequently would jump in and get things back on track. After I retired many of the folks I worked with I said since I left a lot of stuff wasn't getting done on time or done incorrectly. Gee sure don't miss that anymore

    I worked for a department years ago and everyone was jealous of my departments comradiere. With any and all big projects on deadline everyone, and that included managers, helped. We all got along. We were friends. Bosses went to lunch with us, or vice versa. Good times.

    I worked in a factory for a summer, 10 or 12 different lines. Speed was of the essence, we never had enough people, it went so fast and would get so messed up, and overwhelming we'd have to stop the line constantly. Out would come a supervisor yelling 'why did you stop?' nobody could say anything she just kept freaking out! They all did this, knowing we were short staffed, 3 supervisors just wondering around, talking, laughing and inevitability yelling. It was the most demoralizing, anxiety driven place that I've ever worked, to this day! There were Women that always blamed everything on someone else, and there were favorites with the supervisors who had it a lot easier.There were some lovely Women that had worked there for decades, and would until retirement. They were miserable beyond comprehension, they worked so hard every day with no air conditioning and it was backbreaking. You couldn't go to Human Resources, it was a one Woman office and she treated the workers like pathetic children, she was such a BITCH! All at minimum wage.

      Personally, Ive found that more the case with higher mgmnt. When Ive bn in middle mgmnt, I still had my previous workload , plus upper mngmnts duties while they played golf, for $1-$2 hr.

    The cross-armed manager yelling for employees to pick up the pace does nothing to help their business. I noticed this over 40 years ago, and knew that Joe had it wrong. When I became head of my own department, he was mystified at the loyalty, effort and productivity my workers demonstrated.

    The company I work for, you got supervisors, managers, and other higher ups that will come in and help you out if you need it!!!! They’re actually very good about that

    I wish more CEO's would step up and see what is really going on. They could find out why there business is failing.

      If they are checking out things on site who is going to sit up in the ivory tower and make up ridiculous corporate policies with no real knowledge of how the business runs at the ground level?

      He probably already knew that and probably is the cause since he took over 6 years ago but decisions are left to office workers who are interested in self preservation and promotion but comes to the shop floor for "answers" and talks gobbledygook address her concerns? Just gloss probably clueless

    My biggest beef has always been managers who don't lead by example. Getting paid more money to push other people hard so they can take credit when things go well. And ripping their subordinates a new one when things don't.😠😡

    Theres always people willing to go the extra mile while some stand around. That attitude of I'm the supervisor I don't need to help sets the attitude of those working hard. I used to work for a company just like that. All but one of the bosses would stand around telling jokes / laughing while we broke our backs. I never expected anyone to do anything I wouldn't do. Lead by example.

    this happens a lot especially in a retail setting. they want the management to supervise and not pitch in. that cause a high turnover because people don't feel respected or valued. when you have happy employees it makes everything in the work environment run smoother.

      For some place you get in TROUBLE as manager if you jump in and help. They keep saying Delegate and when you say to your bosses your not getting the hours to actually have people to delegate they just keep blaming the manager. Not in ref to this company but it does happen more then most think.

    Well that's the boss's problem, after all he really should know who his employees are - - and if he says he left it to HR, well they need sacked too for incompetence.
    Sack her, and sack whoever hired her

    This is happening everywhere. That's why companies are always looking for employees. Until the owners listen to their employees, the quality of the product will suffer. Managers are just buffers, so the owners don't have to listen to whats really going on.
