    The Ego Illusion ~ Alan Watts
    "Ego is a social institution with no physical reality. The ego is simply your symbol of yourself. Just as the word "water" is a noise that symbolizes a certain liquid without being it, so too the idea of ego symbolizes the role you play, who you are, but it is not the same as your living organism." Alan Watts

      Indeed. Watts was an Anglican clergyman in the 1940s/50s back in the days when clergy spoke very well - I would love to have heard him preach.

      Absolutely. This fundamental truth must become the basis of our whole education All other knowledge and understanding must proceed from this. If we're to survive as a species, if we're ever to overcome the tremendous problems that engulf us, we need to be completely grounded in and transformed by this realisation. Without it we'll just continue to destroy each other and our planet.

      I think the comparison to the word water is a bad one. Everyone knows what water is and has felt it, seen it. No one ever recognizes their own ego because they believe that they are their ego. They recognize it in everyone else though. Your ego is the demiurge that keeps you in duality, which is all your opinions that could never be truth because truth is not opinion. It keeps you from ever knowing the truth of anything.

      Attaching a 'meaning' is thought process and therefore a hinderance in *experiencing* Reality.
      Now, here a nice shorty :
      *Master and disciple out on walk. Master asks - 'Do you smell the bush ?' Disciple - 'Yes.' Master - ' You see i'm holding nothing back ! I have nothing to teach .'* .•°

    The word is never the thing. The word is a symbol of the thing. There can be a thousand words attempting to describe the thing. The Action. The Being or Doing. There are five hundred thousand words and counting in the English Language, there are thousands of languages. Zen to one means something different to those who know only the words, and to those who know how to experience it. Thanks for posting this. Added this clip to my Alan Watts Playlist.

      Adam Headley seriously he is so awesome too!
      I honestly feel like though, his talks about DMT got no where when describing the elves n stuff, but his simple statement that you need to take the final hit to break through was always intense and seriously fucking so heavy.
      His talks on Novelty theory though are amazing, I love them, he practically opened my mind to seeing the world a whole other way. The perspective is amazing. The talks with all 3, rupert sheldrake, terence mckenna, and ralph abraham were seriously cosmic...

    The bit he describes at the end really reminded me of my mushroom experience and the lesson there. It made the cultural pre-learned filters disappear, and gave the childlike view on the world and it made the biggest impression on nature. I remember watching a specific tree and literally falling in love with it, as it was the most beautiful organism I've ever seen in my life. And everything had that sort of magical feeling when you were still a kid. That everything is 'new' and an experience in the moment.
    I'm so grateful for that insight, because it has changed me for the better and even after more than a decade I still learn from it.

    'Ego' seems to be a misunderstanding of an energy that is actually the cycle of life evolutionary efficiency process that is within all beings and things. Kinda the contraction before expansion. Or the boundary between the past and the present and the future. Our greatest gift is our ability to see the past, the present a n d the future a l l at the same time. Our greatest burden is not accepting this.

    You are Alan Watts because your ego tells you so. If the ego is fictitious, then so must you be.
    Ego is what generates what the majority know as life. It is anything but fictitious to most of mankind. You may underststand why it exists, but again, it's the only reality most will ever know.
    Nothing ordinary will change that unless the person listening is already aware that all is not as it seems.

  • @SaithMasu12

    The only thing that i have trouble with is that there is supposidly a body-counciousness and it feels like it is under a certain control.
    Since everything else that is perceived by the 5 senses seems to act on its own, the conclusion that there is power over the estimated subject, meaning ego-I, creates this sense of an isolated entity.
    But it is strange at times, because once thoughts do not appear, it is a feeling that even the body and all actions comming from it, go on automatically. Nevertheless, you are unable to leave the body as long as it functions, which is also a very strange thing.
    Why does counciousness limit itself to a "little me" is just beyond me. Since i am not doing it and it does it itself, why the hassle?

      Illusion, yes. Game, no.
      You mean 'in the now'. I don't go for that. I find it meaningless.
      Course it matters, or why are you telling me?
      I was born in the past. I still exist. Therefore the past also is a place where there is life. Otherwise, I would be dead already.

    • @ChaoticaExtreme
      @ChaoticaExtreme 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there's no past, why did you have to wait for my reply? What you say has no basis. Not logical, nor even valid. For what you say to be true, time has no meaning. This thread alone proves otherwise.
      Life is not a game. Maybe it was for you, but that isn't what everybody else will find. Suffering, or happiness, is not to be toyed with. Oh, if you subscribe to 'the now', where nothing matters (except it does), then that's OK isn't it?
      It matters alright, but it's easy to dismiss everything if you remove what is essential to existence. Too many believe they are far more than they are. That's why they are still here though, isn't it? They are bound.

    • @ChaoticaExtreme
      @ChaoticaExtreme 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Of course you had to wait. By your evaluation you already know, and have entered the information I am to read in the future. Simultaneously, you know all I am going to write to you. Except you don't of course. You can't reply until I have. You are bound by time.
      'Lol'.... Really?
      Suffering is not a choice. It's a fact. Your personal 'dream', does not affect anybody else I can assure you.
      No mind = no suffering... Not more consciousness nonsense is it? OK, well I did say personal dream. Reality is totally different I'm afraid.

    • @ChaoticaExtreme
      @ChaoticaExtreme 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm replying to your comment, and my mind is nowhere else at that time.
      So what's so special about not being distracted as you do a menial task? Even for somebody who lives in the past and future, I can easily accomplish that, and more. In fact, I can do several things at once. So can toddlers.
      Why are you talking as if basic functions are something special?
      You'll have to do better than that...

    Music always "means something," Alan Watts. Some music may derive from emotions, but emotions derive from occurrences and interpretations. He has said this before and it's nonsense. The only way music could not mean anything is if a chance occurrence happened, like a brick falling upon a piano, which wouldn't even be music. Music, by its very nature, is ordered around a system of thought. Alan is a great thinker, but many times I listen to him and he says something completely off the wall like "it's better to tell a child if you hate him, that way he knows where you stand." Then I just question every bit of his logic after that.

    Hi everyone! I have a question. As I understand the purpose of Zen teaching is to help to realize that there is no such thing as separate "I" and the realization of it is what enlightenment is about (seeing the truth). Of cause we should make the difference between understanding and realization. I understand the concept but I do not realize it (don't see the truth) and that is why I can't say that I'm enlightened. This is how I see it. My question is does Christianity offer any way to achieve enlightenment(to see the truth)? It's obviously that the truth is one. So if there is such a way in Christianity it should bring to the same truth as what Zen teaching points to.

      There is only one truth, and this existence is not it. That's my belief. Does saying that mean i'm enlightened? Course not, but many think they are. What is this thing you don't see? Please explain. Why do you call it enlightenment?
      True enlightenment in Christianity calls it the second birth. Or born again. This isn't self proclaimed 'born again Christians', but something far more special.

      @farrider3339 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dmitri Gluskov : well may be look at it from this point - Could it be that your thinking about 'achieving enlightenment' is exactly the one and last thing getting in your way to be it ? (Christian - , Buddhist - , Hindu - , Muslim path ) Thinking is conceptualisation is communication along nonexistent symbolisms . How do we come to the opinion that by using nonexistent means , anyone can realize that nonexisting faculty of 'enlightenment' ? It just can't be *done* ! Is it just a refined way of the ego to pretend that thoughts are helpful in any case? Relinquishing strife - @nd you are there. Fully realized and next moment it all will disappear again. BUT if it has happened once it can happen again and again again !maybe ;-) *omPEACEom*

    • @lanceb3229
      @lanceb3229 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just try to keep an inventory of how i feel in everyday situations then i have to look at how i feel and decide if that feeling is because of a belief i have or had then make an effort to laugh and let it go. It is a daily thing but after a while it becomes a part of you and you dont need drugs to do it.

    • @ChaoticaExtreme
      @ChaoticaExtreme 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't achieve ego death/enlightenment because it isn't your choice. Nor with with psychedelics because they only offer illusion within illusion.

    • @Kaphooey
      @Kaphooey 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ChaoticaExtreme Nahhh dude, psychs will literally shut off the area in your brain that deals with ego. If you want to experience ego death, you temporaliy restrict acsess to it. You can do this with really strong meditation and control over your brain, or just take a couple grams of shrooms or something

    • @ChaoticaExtreme
      @ChaoticaExtreme 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kaphooey Boyo
      How do you know you have 'shut it off''?
      One's ego is master. Integral to ones being. It is not a brain 'part'. It can't be tricked, and you are doing what the ego wants by taking these 'shrooms'.
      The ego is ever present.A human cannot function without it as it is who, and what you are.

    • @Kaphooey
      @Kaphooey 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well your perception of your ego can be blocked lol. and yeah, you know you've reached ego death when you aren't a human anymore and you cant even tell what you are. You literally can NOT understand what you are or who you are or how you are thinking or what thinking even is. its crazy. unhealthy maybe? i do not know the answer to that, but i know it is unreal

    I like when he talked about contemplation. When I am r e t u r n i n g from one of the many journeys, I refer to the experience, in part, as contemplative stillness. This is when my mind begins to be active and responsive to o u r experience and wants to know what we went through! What appears to be s t u c k in my head, is, really,, heartminded instead! So!, I share with my mind! It really wants to know! Via around and within the s o c a l l e d ego!

      Personally, his "Nature of Consciousness" lecture with the music is one of my favorites.
      However, the comments reflect people don'y enjoy it as much.
      Perhaps we compliment each others differences when it comes to music vs pure language.
