The ego: adding music to a lecture, somehow believing it needs something beyond the simple truth it contains. Language is an art in its own right, like philosophy, but today everything has to have more, 'be' more. People can't walk down the street with their own thoughts, hearing the sound of their feet and the things around them. Everyone is wearing earbuds, or on their phone, engaged in a reality outside themselves. Words are powerful on their own, but when someone adds music to it thinking they are making it 'better', they are in fact taking something very important away. Listen to Watts and enjoy the silence between the words and phrases. It is important to do this without music.
@Denny Morales I'm not the problem, I pointed out the problem. If someone is in a museum observing the Mona Lisa, and someone else comes in and scribbles crayon across its face in an attempt to 'improve' it, is that the fault of the observer? Does he object because of his ego? Does he object because he, "likes to think others are messing things up and he is perfect"? And should he "stop blaming outside circumstances" because that is "feeding his ego" and simply enjoy the new crayon-defaced Mona Lisa?
@Denny Morales There's nothing challenging in this for me whatsoever. You're making assumptions and convoluting the point into something personal for you which is totally outside of my comments. I have no interest in your demons or skewed perceptions, try a 'woke' therapist and sell your crazy butterfly namastes' somewhere else, I get enough on YT already.
@Denny Morales I meet someone who uses manipulating, gaslighting, basically lying as a coping mechanism for his damaged ego and I couldn’t believe it. There’s people out here who’s unhinged, unconnected with their peace and morality and I don’t know how to leave in a world like that.
The ego isn’t bad it’s just been abused it doesn’t know any better it lives off analytics and the data is negative. It just needs to put in harmony with the rest of the brain and not let it take charge. It’s trying to protect you in its twisted way. Once the environment becomes positive the ego will be balanced. @Phoenix very interesting. So you’re saying a imbalance in the spine can create the Imbalance in the brain? Trust in yourself fully, especially in areas you are uncertain. Grant yourself the power nobody else can. Your ego will be easier to control when you surrender your emotions to fate but fully trust in your abilities.
I would adjust that last sentence, fully trust in your abilities and the fate itself (destiny resonates with me better than fate that it sounds like something happening by chance/there is no chance in this universe, it is pure intelligence that laughs at us sometimes.... is god a creation of ego or rather the opposite? ).
Surrendering emotions to fate is an interesting way of putting things. Now it depends on what you aimed to convey. Emotions can turn you into a slave without you even realising it. They can be strongly related to the ego, especially when it comes to anger or love, therefore it is better to observe and analyse our feelings and understand them so as we stand a chance at gaining some control over them.

We humans evolved from primal self-awareness, to self-consciousness. This change came with existential dilemmas-with questions “why?” Like eyes that once could see without seeing themselves see, our primal sense of self was without question; a matter of spontaneous such-ness. By natural intuitions and unquestioned faith alone, we went with the flow of existence. Voluntary/involuntary action (like breathing) were inseparable opposites, arbitrarily distinct, working together unconsciously-‘doing without doing’- as a unity in polarity. Our human organism, and the environment that grew it, were simultaneously two in one experience. With self-consciousness came the sense of self as separate and alone in a world not of its own making. We went from ‘letting our existence be,’ to questioning and controlling it. Existential angst.

The *ego* is a compressed [put in a box and limited] perception of who you *think* you are; again, based on what limited knowledge you have. It is said that consciousness is - in fact - by definition: a state of ignorance! As to Watts's definition of the ego, I differ: - the ego is an unseen physical construct that develops over time. In fact, I would compare it to the growth of a tree or plant: the ego is dependent on two things, *a)* starting from childhood... every act you partake in; every course or path you take - including: prayer, sleep, meditation, studying a subject to specialize in, going to a party, who you have or don't have sex with - this creates a physical root system in time itself. In other words, your actions that are reliant upon the *heart* to *physically* move through existence. *b)* the second dependent factor of the ego is *the brain,* which I would compare to *the branches* and *leaves* of a *tree/plant.* So, first you have the heart [that *DOES* represent *the SOUL* ] , which allows your *image* a.k.a. your *PHYSICAL BODY* to navigate existence - in turn, you create pathways in the brain - referred to as *LEARNING.* These new pathways in the brain, i.e. neurons and their connections, wouldn't exist without first having the heart allowing us to create those pathways. And I would liken these neural pathways as branches and leaves of a tree. Both the heart and the brain combine to create the ego - not the physical heart and brain, since these are merely hardware; like engine parts, that would be useless without the fuel/gas and electrical stimulus; the gas and electrical stimulus are comparable to *breath.* The difficulty with the ego is that it transcends into consciousness itself; and we all know how difficult it is to define consciousness. Like consciousness, the ego is aethereal; and, though the ego is subject to change, it has a permanent signature from moment to moment. I am sure people have no idea what I am talking about(the last sentence, specifically). I would simplify and summate the definition of the ego to this: the ego is primarily the compression and rarefaction of *survival of the self* ; it then *transcends the self, as consciousness* - of which, *we all share.*
What about the soul, remember that thing that everyone has chosen to ignore, we all still have one, each of us is in touch with our own Divinity to a different degree, my degree is very high, I am a very lucky man....................Falun Gong can show you the Way.
The ego is an illusion of their own minds. We know nothing other than what is in our own mind. Its solitary. How can we even think about what is in another's mind or tomorrow.... we cannot
The initial expression "from my philosophy" is a good example of what ego is: the definition of ego as a conventional designation built through relationships - as well as the whole talk - is not "Watts' philosophy" but a Buddhist teaching.
The "Ego" isn't something seperate from you, not an extension of you, not even a shadow figure of you. Despite what dear Alan says, the ego, is you and this you, along with this so called egoic personality, is an illusion. There really is no you, or an ego.

let's see.. if our ego is our thoughts of who we are.. then letting go of our ego is being present with our whole being, which extends past our bodies and is one with all
My ego only rears it's ugly head when I feel threatened, and it can turn me into an ugly, angry mess ready to fight over a pittance, when I have the world to lose. My most horrible battles have been keeping myself, my ego, in check. 52yrs... and it can still kick my ass some days.
In other words, one can't live without his ego. It's one of the most precious things which shape our entity. It represents who we are. How can one express his opinions without saying "I believe..." "In my opinion..." "I guess..."? The pronoun "I" embodies our ego. Most people misunderstand the true meaning of this concept which has nothing to do with arrogance
Ego is not something we have but is something that is if identification with "I thought" exists. If no identication exists then no ego exists. Enlightement is recognizing that you are not "I thought". You do that simply by not thinking in your everyday life until you see it clearly. It happens automatically from not thinking.
You just do it, I've had times where I was laying down the room would shake or spin and I'd fade into a dream 🤷♂️ happened since I was a kid I just never told nobody I thought it was normal
Conscious Ego = your personality/character unfettered by past conditioning, charisma, enthusiasm, excitement Unconscious Ego = what you've been hearing about; the false self; unconscious identification with form and ideas
I know that I want to be able to help people in the best way I can in today's world. So that is natural medicines, eating the right food to support our wellbeing.
And now, we are at a time in human history where it is "fun" to create an alter ego personality... Just check it on the medias, such as TH-cam, how much it has become something "great" to enhance oneself, to upgrade oneself through an alter ego... To split oneself further more... We really live in a crazy world.

The general idea from spiritual/new age thinkers among others is that the ego needs to be almost totally silenced or ignored , as if the real way to exist only comes after you've done that . I just don't understand why that is so, I mean why would a subadaptive psychological phenomenon like the ego even come to exist especially when it usually acts detrimentally to us? Not only that, but it has completely taken hold of many people to irreversible lengths, and is always something to be observant of in the best of us. I'm not saying the view is wrong or right, though I have my own opinions of it, but rather why it is so constantly there in the first place, setting almost all conventions and standards for sexual, interpersonal, and competitive behavior in us if we'd be allegedly better off without it.
because its not real nothing good can possibly result from basing your life on things that are not real the concept of a personal ego forces you to think and act as if you are an entity that is separate from all living things and separate from the physical universe

I feel alan watts was a very confused man, who explored deep into his mind to make sense of his being, but got lost in the way. He was a drunkard who couldn't come to terms with his use of life. He kept exploring his mind and sort of lost himself along the way. His relationship with his family was poor, you watch his interviews of his kids. I fell life as it is, is meaningless, but if you keep seeking more than creating you will lose yourself. You are here, so might aswell play this game
Although I don't know much about the man himself, I think the point you make is excellent. I still struggle with ego, death anxiety, lack of purpose etc, but I came to the understanding that my being was merely the consequence of a consequence of a consequence etc etc. My point being that I have a "flatness" of how I view the world and myself. I am who I am and all I can do is interact with what is in front of me. I'm here by accident, so I'll do what I can until I can't do any more. There is merit in looking at who, what, where, when and why. But all that does is convince yourself you're owed something. That you NEED purpose. All life is, is interfacing with your environment, all conciousness is, is a tool our brains created to help us manage this interfacing. I hope I'm not rambling, I don't speak to people much about things like this. Thanks
If he is true and I expand this thought of the non existing "ego" and look at other entities like "science" or "society" and even further on every sound perceived by our ears which has a "meaning" to us I end up at Nietzsches essay ""About truth and lie without morality". In this short essay, about 17 A4 pages, he says the same about truth and lie as Mr. Watts says in this speech. Truth is if Nietzsche was true nothing more than words arranged in a pattern without contradiction. If this is true we might be able to see "truth" but we will never be able to communicate this truth. Quote Wittgenstein: "If there are no words for something, we shouldn't talk about it." Anyway "worth" hearing and fowarding it to a friend Thanks for sharing Mr. Watts

The mind has two parts, the soul and the ego. The soul, in its purest state, is truthful, compassionate and tolerant while the ego, in most cases, has chosen a different path. To achieve enlightenment we must find a Way to get the ego to align itself with the soul, though some may think the other way around would be better. The spiritual practice Falun Gong can show us the Way.

The ego is the disguise consciousness wears to have the human experience
What is consciousness, when it's not wearing the ego as a disguise?
Ego is not a disguise. It is an amalgamation of defence mechanisms in response to trauma manifesting on all levels of being. It is inevitable in its formation, but it must be balanced later in life, preferably reduced to its absolute minimum or even, if possible, extinguished altogether.

We are multidimensional beings
There are many levels of perception
There are many layers of consciousness

Once started philosophy nothing felt the same

He is just the first step, now, let's move on to the PHD level.......................Falun Gong
The *ego* is a compressed [put in a box and limited] perception of who you *think* you are; again, based on what limited knowledge you have. It is said that consciousness is - in fact - by definition: a state of ignorance! As to Watts's definition of the ego, I differ:
- the ego is an unseen physical construct that develops over time. *b)* the second dependent factor of the ego is *the brain,* which I would compare to *the branches* and *leaves* of a *tree/plant.*
So, first you have the heart [that *DOES* represent *the SOUL* ] , which allows your *image* a.k.a. your *PHYSICAL BODY* to navigate existence -
in turn, you create pathways in the brain - referred to as *LEARNING.* These new pathways in the brain, i.e. neurons and their connections, wouldn't exist without first having the heart allowing us to create those pathways. And I would liken these neural pathways as branches and leaves of a tree.
Both the heart and the brain combine to create the ego - not the physical heart and brain, since these are merely hardware; like engine parts, that would be useless without the fuel/gas and electrical stimulus; the gas and electrical stimulus are comparable to *breath.*
The difficulty with the ego is that it transcends into consciousness itself; and we all know how difficult it is to define consciousness.
Thanks, you've tried to explain it.
Thanks 😊🙏🏽
What about the soul, remember that thing that everyone has chosen to ignore, we all still have one, each of us is in touch with our own Divinity to a different degree, my degree is very high, I am a very lucky man....................Falun Gong can show you the Way.

The ego is an illusion of their own minds. We know nothing other than what is in our own mind. Its solitary. How can we even think about what is in another's mind or tomorrow.... we cannot

let's see.. if our ego is our thoughts of who we are.. then letting go of our ego is being present with our whole being, which extends past our bodies and is one with all
My ego only rears it's ugly head when I feel threatened, and it can turn me into an ugly, angry mess ready to fight over a pittance, when I have the world to lose.
No but ignorance is bliss
I represents consciousness, not the individual’s ego
I think with the video and the score, and Watts’ attention commanding voice, I could become emotional if he read the weather report.
Emotion is the cause of most of the evil on this planet. When emotion is transcended it becomes compassion, care.
I don't know how ego but it separated us and make us feel special
Conscious Ego = your personality/character unfettered by past conditioning, charisma, enthusiasm, excitement
Unconscious Ego = what you've been hearing about; the false self; unconscious identification with form and ideas

I'm not saying the view is wrong or right, though I have my own opinions of it, but rather why it is so constantly there in the first place, setting almost all conventions and standards for sexual, interpersonal, and competitive behavior in us if we'd be allegedly better off without it.
because its not real
nothing good can possibly result
from basing your life on things that are not real
the concept of a personal ego forces you to think and act as if you are an entity that is separate from all living things
and separate from the physical universe
His point is that the ego is a tool we use for social interaction and it has its place. We can never get rid of it, the trick is to use it as a tool and not let it control you. You are not your ego, you are much more than that.
I always ask this question and no one answers me. Where do these guys get these clips from to compile into their videos ? Will anyone ever answer me. I’m really curious
They’re full lectures available on this very TH-cam, but it takes a lot of listening to then come up with this relevant clip

I wonder what Alan Watts would think about the world if he witnessed it today? People have taken the concept of ego to a whole new level these days. Everyone wants to feed their ego, the constant need of confirmation is insane.
Understanding the neurochemical basis of ego death is essential as we enter the so-called psychedelics renaissance. Once shamed and stigmatised, substances like LSD and psilocybin (found in ‘magic’ mushrooms) are now being investigated in research centres and hospitals around the world as treatments for depression, anorexia, pain and other problems.

Needed to hear this
I feel alan watts was a very confused man, who explored deep into his mind to make sense of his being, but got lost in the way.
Thanks
He was a lot wiser than you
Hi Alan , i seen as a bad Blank, john Wick style😊... one love Genius
Love it 😊
If he is true and I expand this thought of the non existing "ego" and look at other entities like "science" or "society" and even further on every sound perceived by our ears which has a "meaning" to us I end up at Nietzsches essay ""About truth and lie without morality".
Quote Wittgenstein: "If there are no words for something, we shouldn't talk about it."
Anyway
"worth" hearing and fowarding it to a friend
Thanks for sharing Mr. Watts
wanna try some psychedelics??

This man is right so I play The joker just like you do behind your
I wanna touch on what he said
I think u must be completely stripped of ure ego n pride in life which usually come when very low income household as a adult , and rebuild from there so ure foundation will be stronger then others which will grant u humility when ure ego presents its self.
Not at all. The goal isn't to rid yourself of ego. The goal is to simply see the ego for what it is--an illusion.
Thanks
The world made me sick n Allan came along to cure me.i love you Allan
