Directed by Frank Darabont from a Stephen King story. Their third pairing. The story ended with hope and them still driving through mist looking for Hartford or Hope.. Stephen preferred the film's ending. I hated it. Frank was behind The Walking Dead, so yes, there were a bunch of them in this.

As cruel as it might be, it’s the ending that takes this movie from a good horror movie to a great one. Just that note of bleak devastation that it leaves you with, so simple and yet so mercilessly executed. It haunted me for days, the first time.

What? The ending is moronic and completely unrealistic. No one in their right mind would just drive for like an hour and then kill themselves. Your about to get eaten? Ok sure. Your sitting safe in a car? Uh, no.
@@TheNichq how were they safe in the car when a 20 story monster just walked by? they were doomed. I do wish it had shown them like sitting in the car for a period of time so it didn't seem so sudden, but yeah they were doomed and all hope was lost.

The kid told his father he didn't want the monsters to get him, and after seeing the horrors inflicted on the man within the pharmacy, the spiders eating him from the inside out, the father didn't want to see his son suffer the same fate. A car window isn't going to keep everything out, especially when they saw all these enormous monsters, so the father made what he thought was the best decision at the time. To call it moronic is to ignore everything the movie established; hopelessness, despair, and not knowing if the world would ever be safe again.
@@TheNichq They didn't drive for an hour and kill themselves. They drove as far as their fuel allowed them to drive and decided a bullet to the brain would be a better option than dying in agony like all those who were attacked. Not sure how observant you were during this, but they didn't have a lifetime supply of food, water, medicine, and other necessities to support life in the safety of that car.
I'd highly recommend watching the black and white directors cut, the original cut was supposed to be in black and white because the director was paying homage to the classic 1950-60s creature features. The black and white helps cover up imperfections in the CGI, as well as make the tone of the film more clear.
Was gonna comment this exact thing. And the black and white version is a great experience.
I agree, it also adds to the old-fashioned structure that combines a modern filmmaking aesthetic (the documentary/in-the-moment feel of the entire film).

I absolutely love this movie. Nobody adapts Stephen King like Frank Darabont. Most people hate this movie because of the ending, I love it because of it. This movie has the balls to do that.

The ending is the best part
I hate that that’s a thing. People hate an entire movie because it doesn’t have a happy ending. Some of the best stories told have “bad” endings. Just from personal experience, a lot of movies made in the US have that mentality of having to have a good happy ending. What vexes me, is the reason they don’t like the “bad” ending is because it makes them feel sad, THATS THE POINT BILLY
the ending is what makes the movie. I wish more movies had unconventional endings where the bad guy wins or did what No Country for Old Men did and completely throw off the viewer.
@@bucketkayo9776 agreed. I remember watching this right after it came out for rental. I hated it.... 3/4ths of the way through. I wasn't on board. I hated a lot of the characters and felt like there wasn't enough explanation of the event. Had shadows of big monsters and tentacles and I felt like it was all very vague and not fleshed out. Then the ending happened and it completely changed how I looked at it and I ended up recommending it to everyone. It's great, you just gotta realize it's not a monster movie. It's a character study.
The ending is everything for this movie, to me. It takes The Mist from a pretty good, entertaining creature feature, into something altogether legendary. You will never forget the ending of The Mist. I will never forget the ending of The Mist.
I just love that they had the balls to do that.

It's beautiful because it encapsulates what I believe good horror to actually be:
*It hurts the viewer directly.*
All throughout the movie, you the viewer are empathizing with and associating with the main crew. "They're smarter than the others, and thus so are we, because we'd be like those main guys. Those main guys are staying smart. They're staying rational. They aren't going crazy like all those 'lesser' people."
And as this mentality continues, the ending of the movie first shows people just how incompatible with "this new world" humanity really is. The behemoth was the straw. So when it came time to safely and painlessly take ourselves out, while the audience didn't necessarily like it, they BELIEVED that it was the most logical course of action.
*Just like the group in the diner thought what they were doing was for the best.*
The movie wastes no time punching the viewer in the damn mouth for this slip-up. It shows an ugly mirror to the audience, "No, you just did that. You just believed this was good. You just did what they did. And look what you just did."

@@CorwinTheOneAndOnly it definitely shows how quickly one's rational thinking could go out the window when your entire understanding of reality is flipped. How you can't ever know how you may respond in a survival scenario when faced with no good options
I did forget the ending to the mist, then years later i come across this reaction & 5 min when theyre in the car im like "oh no shit i think i remember how this ends" and i have to live it twice 😆😆😆
This movie man… the ending of this film was ABSOLUTELY incredible. I love showing the movie to people simply to see their reactions to the ending. Stephen King himself wishes he could’ve wrote an ending as good as the movie. It’s incredible.
Indeed he said so. But that must also be because King is terrible in writing good endings.

Without a doubt, one of the most depressing movie endings of all time. Sad part is I don't think this movie would be that memorable without it.

What's crazy to is the books ending is way more hopeful than the films ending where it's just sad an shocking which was a huge surprise for anyone watching the movie who's read the book. Stephen King also said he loved this ending more than the one he did
Didn't surprise me. Even in the story , David thinks to himself that if things go badly he will "take care of" everyone else so they don't suffer.
It's not hopeful at all. The mist covers everything in the horizon and all we know is that they are trying to run away from it. There's no indication that it'll stop. Meanwhile in the movie the mist is gone and the threat is repelled.
The movie ending is a Happy one compared to the book(not to the protagonists of course),in the book is left ambigous the situation in the world,in the movie is clear that Humanity is Winning and Pushing the mist back
It was quite the experience growing up as a kid, and knowing Marcia Gay Harden as Robin Williams/Professor Philip's fiance Dr. Sara Jean in Flubber.....
Then watching her completely wreck shop as Mrs. Carmody years later.
She definitely deserved way more acclaim for her performance here. 👏👏👏
Mrs. Carmody is one of my most hated performances ever. I loathe that character with all my being, which means Marcia Gay Harden did a phenomenal job.
She's scary talented.
There are a bunch of walking dead actors. The woman who played Andrea, the man who played Dale, the woman who plays Carol & even darabont was responsible for directing some walking dead episodes in the earlier seasons. This is one of my favorite Stephen King stories. Book has a different ending though. I think you can find some drawings of the monsters online somewhere of their concept without the mist covering up their design
Darabont co-CREATED the series and was showrunner for season one. He was fired because AMC wanted to spend less money.
He was the creator lol
The guy who played Morales was also in it. He played one of the two soldiers that opted out.

I first saw this movie in 2013. The special effects don't exactly hold up, but man. That ending is one of the biggest gut punches I've ever experienced.
I remember the first time watching this film, after that ending I sat in silence for a good 30 minutes, just absorbing everything I just watched. An impactful ending that will sit with me forever. So glad to see you cover it and hear your thoughts!
My friends and I sat in silence also. Then went on to discuss our extreme disappointment and how we just wasted $8 on a crap film.
Thomas Jane's acting in this is some of his best yet. The intensity and horrific-ness of his wails is - well, at least for me - it induces the same feeling I get when I hit my funny bone. That kind of brain melting anguish.. Such a terrific film, so fucked up, so absolutely perfect.
The only other scene with a wail that gut punched me like this was on ER when Dr Benton's innocent nephew dies from being shot by gang crossfire and he has to go out to the waiting room to tell his sister. He doesn't even say anything... you can just hear her screaming at the expression on his face. Brutal.
RedLetterMedia put it best when talking about how this movie is structured. They make the main character the perfect horror movie logiclord among a sea of archetypical tropes - a guy who always makes the most rational decisions in every shitty situation so at the end, when he does what would probably be the logical thing (swiftly killing your loved ones so they wouldn't suffer a horrifying painful death), they pull the rug under you and throw a wrench at the viewer's own sense of logic and reason. I've always disliked the kinds of people who bitch about horror characters acting irrational or making stupid decisions (humans can be extremely irrational and instinctual beings, especially in tough situations; who the fuck are you to tell me you would be capable of doing what's 'logical' if a monster beyond all your pre-established understanding of the universe is trying to kill you) and I love this movie for going against that attitude.
The scariest part is when you realize that the crazy lady claimed the mist would lift if they sacrifice the boy, and then the boy is killed and the mist DOES lift...

One of the greatest endings to a horror movie EVER. Darabont's decision to expand upon King's original ending was the moment this movie transcended from being good to being one of the greatest horror stories of the 21st century. Stephen King's sense of relatable storytelling combined with Director Frank Darabont's understanding of the inherent power of tragedy made this a modern classic 👏

I saw this movie in the theater with a friend. We and everyone watching walked out absolutely silent. We were exiting the movie theater in the top of a mall that has closed all the stores. The sound of all of our footsteps echoing through the mostly empty mall just added to the eerie and strange feeling I couldn't shake. I've seen this movie a ton of times, and I've never really paid attention to the camera work so thank you so much for bringing something new to it for me!
Saw this in theatres at 11 years old with one of my best friends and the entire theatre cheered when the crazy lady gets shot so this movie always bring a smile to my face! It's a great film

I feel Thomas Jane is very underrated. It’s worth checking out the short punisher movie he did, from bootleg universe on TH-cam (same producer as Dredd). Actually, it’s worth checking out a few of the shorts from that, as they’re all based on existing geek/comic book IPs. Back to Jane, the film Thursday is a very sharp dark comedy
Jane was great as the Punisher, that movie was way better than ppl give it credit for.
Enjoyed him in The Expanse too.

The scariest part of this movie is how realistic the reactions are from the different walks of life! I see most of this playing out in my own small town if stuff hits the fan. Then the ending…… yikes! Never let go of hope, it’s a bad place to be. I actually felt sorry for you having to see it for the first time. You can’t unsee it!
This movie is certainly not for the instant gratification addicted casual watcher. You did an absolute job reacting to this film analytically and interpreting what the story with its surrounding elements. Great reaction, James!

The ending to this ( before THE ending ) is beautiful . The whole driving sequence set "Host of Seraphim" is amazing. And after that , in the car , the actors do SO MUCH with just silence and expressions. It is amazing.
Even knowing all the horror those creatures have caused, the huge one that passes them in the car inspires awe every time I watch this movie.

The ending makes this movie stand out from all others. What I also highly appreciate is that we see ungodly creatures yet finally we have a movie where our military is actually capable of handling it. It is so satisfactory to me. To often do we have movies with large creatures that are just completely invulnerable to the mind boggling force of modern warfare fire power. A 50. Cal does so much damage. A tank, artillery, 60mikes, gatling guns, surface to surface missiles, etc. Our weapons are quite capable of fucking things to kingdom come.

your reaction to the ending was pretty much like mine when I saw it a couple of years ago. and the worst part was a couple of minutes later when the Army shows up, with everyone else rescued.... the timing of it all.
One of my all-time favorites. Director Frank Darabont used a lot of this cast for his premiere of The Walking Dead, which is why they all seem so memorable. The actor who played the boy actually also played Gordon's son in The Dark Knight!
Looking back, this was one of the first horror movies I watched with friends late at night and back then the ending was shocking, and now it's just so well executed. I have to say that this was probably one of the first movies that got me interested in story beats and plot/overall cinema, surprisingly.
I really enjoyed that this a play on Lord of the Flies in a store (as the island) and the mist (as the sea). The ending is a perfect example of irony.

You're right, there are several Walking Dead characters in this movie. it was directed by Frank Darabont who also directed The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, and devoloped The Walking Dead for TV.
Those monsters came from the same place the creature "IT" comes from, which means ITs arch nemesis exists in this verse too. The clowns main OP is a planet sized turtle.

@@JamesVSCinema A lot of Stephen King's horror is all sort of connected to the same universe/different dimensions. If you're ever up for a read, check out The Dark Tower series, as it explains a bit more how everything is connected. Don't check out the movie though. 😬 Was absolutely not a good adaptation. The painting the main character was doing in the beginning was actually a Dark Tower painting.

One of my favorite endings of all time. Even Stephen King says that Darabont's ending was way better than what he came up with. This is how you do a proper adaptation.

The thing is , there is a reference to this ending in the original story and it is what gave Darabont the idea.
But it is a very small throwaway line that most people don't remember.
The ending takes this from a "scary movie" into true horror. We have an ending so much worse than death for the lead character.

That ending made this film into one of the best psychological horror movies I can barely watch again. That more than anything really raises it.
One of my favorite horror films of the last 2 decades. Would highly recommend checking out the B&W version someday, as Frank Darabont considers it his preferred version but was told it was less marketable.

I always appreciate your reactions. Honestly though when I saw it was this movie, I didn't even watch the whole thing, I just skipped straight to see your reaction to the end. It's THAT impactful. And you didn't disappoint :)
This ending was so cruel…I swear I was mad, sad, just a lot going on in my head. But hopelessness can lead to some really misdirected thinking, and the way I saw it, as long as we breathe, there’s hope. Just keep fighting. That’s my takeaway.

Finally, a film with the clear message - "dont give up"
Man this movie freaked me the hell out when I was younger. That ending has to be one of the cruelest gut punches put to film. I read the book afterwards, and the book had an open ending. Also, aside from the ending, it was the human sacrifice scene, that was written for the movie, and just like with the ending, King absolutely loved it, and regretted not coming up with it. Ofc a mad cult would commit human sacrifice, right?
Always reminds me of a favorite quote. A person is smart, people are dumb.
Darabont made this movie after filming a few episodes of "The Shield" and used that crew and filming technique to get the distinct handheld look that fills the film. Using the TV crew helped keep the budget down (especially since the studio cut the budget in half after Frank insisted on keeping the ending he wrote). Just after this movie, he made "The Walking Dead" and brought many of these actors with him.
Alot of great actors in this movie! :) Andre Braugher (the police chief in "Brooklyn nine-nine"), Melissa McBride and Laurie Holden (from "The Walking Dead").

I remember watching this on TV the first time and it broke me. Also another interesting thing about the main character is how much he reacts like the audience (level headed, self aware, etc), almost a non character in that sense. But the more as the story goes on, he starts breaking down and becomes more fleshed out. Also that stunner of an ending really makes us feel like hell by having us think "my god, I REALLY don't wanna be in that situation at all making those decisions". It's also cool that Stephen King really loved this ending compared to his story and said, "it's so nihilistic! Go for it!" You know you have something truly awful and terrifying if King himself approves of it haha!

This movie is the literal reciprocal of the good guys always win and everything works out. This is the antithesis of the typical format. I love this movie so much.

Great reaction James! I loved this movie when it came out and of course, the ending blew me out of the water. I always thought that the monsters in this movie were actually just behaving as any animal normally would, with them only becoming defensive when intruders interfered their home or posed a threat (ie.) the pharmacy scene and the pterodactyl-looking creatures only entering the store to go after the bugs that they were feeding on. The real monsters were humans all along and took things to the next level, compared to other post apocalyptic survivor movies and shows us what may happen once food and shelter needs have been met and what may happen next.

And on this day we learned the truth behind "Be careful what you wish for."
It’s been awhile, but I remember that Frank Darabont (sp?) guest-directed an episode (or more than one?) of The Shield and was delighted with the way that show was run and shot and so he ended up hiring the camera crew for The Mist. It was energizing for him to have that accelerated pace and visual style. I think it was the director’s commentary either from the TV show or from the DVD of the movie where he talked about it. Great performance by Sam Witwer, AKA The Emperor's voice, AKA Starkiller, AKA Crashdown. Short but impactful.
Glad youre checkin this one dude! About to watch, and in case you don't recognize him, the soldier that gets killed by the crab-type thing is Sam Witwer, who plays Starkiller and Maul! Love that dude. The ending is phenomenal, and wasn't entirely original to the movie. In the book they're holed up in an abandoned hotel and have heard about the possibility of somewhere they can go iirc. Stephen King loves this new ending!
Loved those Force Unleashed games. Also had roles on Battlestar Galactica and Smallville, he's been in some good stuff over the years.

one of the few more depressing endings i can think of offhand is the original "night of the living dead" ('68). in "the mist" you can still argue the moral is positive ("don't lose hope")
I had never actually heard the Wilhelm Scream in this movie in particular until watching this reaction video. I've been re-watching this movie since I first saw it in the theater in 2007, having just had my 19th birthday. I always try to listen for it when screams are involved in any way, lol. I love your reaction. It's pretty refreshing to see someone who can respect the special effects of the time. Especially when the story is so fulfilling 😊
Stephen King also praised this change up in the ending vs his own written version. He was quite impressed with the twist.

This was a fantastic gut wrenching and brilliant film. So well done on all counts.
I honestly really enjoyed this movie, I wish there was a second one.
And this is one of my favorite movies because of how they made the ending counter to the norm.
My initial watch of this movie was like right after it came out.
A friend asked me how I felt about it and I told them, "That was so fucking dark that I don't even know if I liked it." In retrospect, the ending kinda makes the movie, but man oh man, is it heavy.
I love love love unhappy endings and this one didn’t disappoint! Really made this movie memorable for me.
Frank Darabont + a Stephen King novella is basically a cheat code for a great movie.
Everyone else has covered all the other points I would have made, except one, and I make that one in full understanding that, from a filmmaking perspective, I have absolutely no qualifications whatsoever other than really liking film:
If you're a filmmaker, and are looking to adapt something else from one (written) medium to yours, a novella is basically the perfect amount of source material for you to do it. You can pretty much cover every inch of a novella - other written media are usually way, way too short to develop into a feature length film, or way way too long.
Great movie and great reaction lol the best part was knowing what was coming and you had no idea - all I’m thinking is Oh man if you think those spiders are bad… 😂 my favourite part of the reaction: when the solder gets put outside and looks up to see the huge monster and you yell,”WHAT THE F@#K IS THAT!” LoI I didn’t know if that was you are one of the people in the grocery store! Good job James - you just got a subscriber 😎

I love the fact that you felt the frustration I felt when everyone debated about the monsters' existence instead of showing the tentacle.
I loved the ending! I love when a movie dares to be different and not go with fairy tale endings. So much more relatable.
