The close ups: whenever *anyone* is talking to Clarice, they're looking directly into the camera at the audience. In the reverse shots, Jodie Foster is looking slightly off camera. This is intended to get inside your head (ha!) and make you, the audience, subconsciously *become* Clarice.

Yes, and also give the impression that she is always scrutinised. Every time she walks into a scene everyone looks at her.
It's also supposed to make you feel as uncomfortable as Clarice. Much of the film follows Clarice as she navigates the "boys' club" of the FBI, attempting to distinguish herself to the superiors who believe she is too young and inexperienced to be taken seriously.
It’s also just the classic Demme close-up. He’s uses it in dramas, comedies, hell even in Stop Making Sense.
They were actually going to show what she's describing in flashbacks, but Demme was like the performances were so captivating it would be a crime to cut away... shows he knew how to let the movie just movie.
I remember the actress for young Clarice was sad that it would be cut as it was her only scene.
P.S. I got that info from the tv episode on Reelz where they go behind the scenes detailing everything from production to it's legacy.
Both Foster and Hopkins weren't even 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choices, I can't remember which it was but the director was fine with Jodie but not Hopkins and the studio was fine with Hopkins but not Jodie during casting(again can't remember if that's the order or it was vice versa but development was hell for damn near up to filming.
I worked in a movie theatre when this came out. "Sleeping With The Enemy", a Julia Roberts vs. evil husband movie, was also out at the time. One dude came up to the window and asked for a ticket to see "Sleeping With The Lambs". We told him it wasn't that kind of movie theatre.
Omg! Lol! That’s hilarious! I saw both of those in the theatre. Sleeping with the enemy was GREAT and not talked about much, which is interesting because it was so well received in my theatre.

What I love about Jodie Foster's performance is that she's vulnerable. I love that she cries after meeting Lecter for the first time. Even the most stoic person would be freaked out - let alone a rookie. Her fear allows the audience to identify with her without the need to make her invincible or without feeling.
Yes! She's courageous, smart and strong but doesn't lose her vulnerability. It's what makes her such a relatable protagonist that we can all root for.
I thought she cried after that part because she got sexually assaulted by that other guy in the cell.

@@Literally-God I thought the same thing. The entire experience was horrifying and emotional. Having that lunatic assault her and meeting Lector was a bit over the top. .... PEACE to ALL.

According to Jodie Foster she was so terrified of Anthony Hopkins in rehearsals that during the making of this film she kept away from him until when they were on set shooting. Other production crew members have also said that they found his character portrayal so intense that they often had to look over their shoulders during production as he would often hide on set! Amazing film.
I think either Foster or Hopkins revealed on the Graham Norton show that Hopkins was equally intimidated by Foster. It's kind of cute
Anthony Hopkins was afraid of Jodie Foster too and they only found out about each other after the shoot when they finally talked. At least that is Hopkins story and that is not as impossible as it might seem since Jodie Foster won the Oscar for best leading actress at about the time production of this movie must have started.
He once sat behind a couple watching the movie and read out one of the lines along with his character on screen (imagine having that voice whispering in your ear)!

This is one of those films that has so much replay value that you find new details and information on every rewatch. The late Jonathan Demme really made something special with this film.

When Clarice describes her experience of trying to save the lamb, that was originally supposed to a flashback sequence. However, Jodie Foster's delivery was so great that the director decided to just leave her monologue
This film did one of the best jobs I've ever seen showing the viewpoint from the female perspective.

@@JamesVSCinema What's amazing is when you watch the movie a second time and realise the director shows you very clearly that it's Hannibal and yet the way he structures it, you make the assumption that it's the cop instead. It's very clever and very audacious that he risked the audience guessing, but most people didn't guess!

I saw it in a large movie theatre when it came out, Hannibal's face being 5 meters/15 feet high in the close ups didn't exactly make him less scary. :D
One of the people I saw it with caused us to be late because he felt the need to get stoned first. We were stuck in the front row. I saw it again a few months later the day I graduated high school, and I made sure to arrive early and get better seats.
"So much just happened."--The perfect four word review for this movie. The first thing people always bring up when discussing this film is Hopkins performance. Perfectly understandable, I get it, it's brilliant. But people forget just how good Foster is in this. They'll say she was good but no one ever puts her performance on the same level as Hopkins and it is. However I want to believe this is mainly because most people don't know much about how the movie was filmed. There are certain details you need to know to understand just how brilliant her performance was. First, in the final face to face scene between her and Hopkins in the Memphis court house where she is telling the story of the lambs a technician dropped a wrench directly behind her. It's barely even audible in the movie but it was very audible on the set. When that take was completed Foster turned around and asked Demme "what in the hell was that?" That's how loud it was. There is absolutely no visible sign in the scene of her hearing that wrench. Secondly, the climatic scene in the basement with Buffalo Bill was filmed using normal lighting. The night vision effect was added in post production. All of those physical reactions, the reaching around, the stumbling, the facial expressions, etc. were done by her when she had perfectly clear vision of her surroundings.
I always thought she did the most amazing job of being terrified yet brave enough to continue. That final scene in the basement was a tour de force! She’s the only thing making it so tense and horrifying. The camerawork is great but she’s carrying that whole thing. I really thought Hopkins was fantastic, but I also think it’s easier to play the over the top controlled killer than to have to express all of that subtle, purposefully restrained, emotion in tight shots on your face. The movie was wonderful. Oscars all around we’re well-deserved. But Foster’s performance was the masterpiece within the masterpiece.

FYI this is actually a sequel. The first book is Red Dragon, originally made into a movie as Manhunter then redone after the blockbuster success of SOTL with hopkins as Lecter, with same title as the book. The third in the series is Hannibal. I love them all, and the books.

This movie is the first appearance of hannibal on screen. The book might be the sequel but this film is the OG.

Manhunter is an overlooked masterpiece.
Manhunter is widely considered the better version of Red Dragon, but both versions are worth seeing.
I always go back and watch this interview with Jodie Foster about this movie. And she says that because of the boxed-in set, she wasn't able to talk to Hopkins in between takes and even if she could, she avoided him out of fear. And on the last day she was able to tell him that and Anthony just giggled and replied "Really? I was scared of you too 😆". It pretty funny imagining that after shooting that movie with him.
If you liked this you should definitely watch "Hannibal" the show. Mads Mikkelsen does a wonderful job of portraying a young Hannibal Lecter. It is, in my mind, one of the most underrated and yet one of the best shows ever!

Just had the pleasure of viewing and it was good but, and without spoiling anything - my only problem with it is its too unrealistic in terms of injury/lethality aspects

I HATE morgue scenes but that was probably my favourite in the film because instead of focusing on the horror of gore, it's about thinking about victims as people by focusing on Clarice's face.
It's so weird that the gruff but lovable Captain from "Monk" and Buffalo Bill is the same actor.

The Detective in Monk has a quite surprising backstory.

Fun facts about Lecter's cell, one reason it's so different from the other prisoners' is due to filmmaking concerns. The plexiglass is so we won't have bars interrupting Hopkins's face during camera shots, and the cell itself had to be constructed with Hopkins inside it.
Added to which, he can grab at people through the bars and bite fingers off. Lecter is the guy you can't give a single inch to.

I love how this movie "breaks the fourth wall" constantly with the direct to camera acting without actually taking you out of the moment, instead it sucks you in even more.

Anthony Hopkins in this film made me feel completely hypnotized. Only other time I can recall anything close was Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s “processing” scene in ‘The Master’.

This is one of the best examples of a character having limited screen time but their presence being felt throughout the entire film. Interesting point about the point of view shots throughout the film! That kind of slipped by on my first viewing

Character Depth and a story. The two things that most horror movies lack. But then again that applies to most movies nowadays.

I believe I heard that the reason for the 'POV' close ups was due to the director really wanted to create that uneasiness mostly due to the fact that Sterling is a female cop, hence the scenes where the male cops and other males just stare at the camera as well in all shots when she's present, you're suppose to feel how Sterling feels, uncomfortable
Well deserved academy award winner here. The Hannibal series is incredible too. You can probably skip the other movies if you want. Red Dragon is alright, but older version of that story Manhunter (86) by Michael Mann (Heat) is a more interesting watch really. Dated, but creepy weird.
Brain Cox played Hannibal in Manhunter. He also played real-life screenwriting guru Robert McKee in Adaptation.

I certainly wouldn't skip the Ridley Scott's sequel.
It's a pretty universal opinion that Manhunter is tremendous and Red Dragon isn't much. Even with all its acclaim, Manhunter is still underwatched and appreciated.
"Buffalo" Bill's character is based, in part, on a real psycho killer named Ed Gein, also known as the Butcher of Plainfield. Ed is also the inspiration for Norman Bates (Psycho), Leatherface (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) and the character Dr. Oliver Thredson in the TV series American Horror Story: Asylum. When caught, Ed was in the process of making a "woman suit" so he could be like his late mother.

He was based on multiple killers. The way he trapped Katherine Martin by using a fake arm injury while loading his van was based on Ted Bundy who did the same thing.

A lot of the stories about what was found in Ed's shed were exaggerated, but you still can't overstate the horrors of it. That said, the majority of his "materials" were from graverobbing, not murdering - as far as the really famous serial killers go he actually has such a low kill count that some people debate whether he really qualifies as a "serial killer."
A lot of killers could've only had their crimes prevented by being placed in a high-security mental health facility before they started and held there for life, but Ed Gein from what we know doesn't follow the "normal" pathology of serial and spree killers, and many experts speculate that he's someone who could've lived a peaceful and productive life if he'd sought and been given treatment for his mental health. Instead, after his mother's death, he spent most of his time isolated on a farm, alone with his increasingly disordered and destructive thoughts.

6:45 - So the camera thing: Notice that Clarice looks slightly off camera, while the other actors look directly to it. That is, I suppose, to make us see through her pov, and the fact that seems too close, is just to make it feel uncomfortable as if they were inside her personal space all the time.
First time viewer. Thank for this! I’ve seen the film probably hundreds of times, so it was cool to see what people interpret right away.
Finding out Hannibal disguised himself as one of the injured guards, Finding out Roz is number 1, and finding out jigsaw was the “dead” body in between the 2 guys. 3 of the biggest plot twists of my life.
"He's an animal!" I'm so glad you said that because what I love about this movie is that it's actually about humanizing people depicted as animals and objects by the world around them, even Hannibal. I've been obsessed with this movie for eight years but I only JUST saw it last week. I've got an anxiety disorder so it's a VERY odd obsession but I was finally ready and now I'm here to celebrate having finally seen it by watching you watch it! I love this movie so so much more than ever.
The Silence of the Lambs is one of my favorite films of all time and it is a masterpiece of film making. From the script to the directing to the acting to the cinematography. It's just absolutely brilliant which is why it is one of only *three* films to ever win all 5 of the major Academy Awards. That is one hell of an exclusive club. Another outstanding reaction, James!

If you're getting into the psych-breakdown theme, I'd recommend you pull an older HBO Films production called "Citizen X," which was a study of the pursuit of the first "official" serial killer in the cold-war Soviet Union. Great film.
The only flaws in the film are geographical. Starling tells Lector that the Kansas City homicide department coined the name Buffalo Bill but later on when Starling is looking at the map showing the locations of the crime scenes from the case file it shows all the murders taking place well east of the Mississippi River. Kansas City homicide would have had nothing to do with the case. Why would they come up with the nickname? Also if the FBI plane is getting ready to land just outside of Chicago why is it flying over mountains? Other than that the film is perfect. My only other complaint is that a side effect of watching this film is getting the heebie jeebies whenever American Girl comes on the radio. I used to really like that song now the first thing I associate it with is a serial killer.
The POV shots with Lecter are unsettling. Like he's staring deep into your soul.
I’ve always found his extraordinary sense of smell to be fascinating and likely key to his madness. He smells like an efficient predator does. He could smell her blood the way a shark does. And, in humans, our sense of smell is intimately tied to our emotions and memories. How could a person have that ability and not go insane.
Clarice Starling is based on an actual agent named Candice DeLong who was one of the first female behavioral science or profiler. The two killers are a mashup of Ed Gein and Ted Bundy. Just some fun little facts 😁🥰

And Clarice's supervisor, Jack Crawford (played by Scott Glenn), may be modeled on John E Douglas, one of the initiators of CRIMINAL PROFILING, specifically applied to serial killers.
Anthony Hopkins only had a limited amount of screentime and yet still won an award for this movie. That's what you call a chilling, captivating performance!
Seeing those close up straight angle shots on a big screen - especially some of Lecter's - really got under your skin. RIP Jonathan Demme. You should check out some of his other films. This one came out of nowhere compared to his previous work. I highly suggest "Something Wild" and "Stop Making Sense", one of the greatest music documentaries of all time.

How Clarice is always made to be smaller or the odd one out in her surroundings, how everyone stares directly at the lens when talking to her, when they describe what Lector did to the nurse but don't show so you can imagine the horror yourself (as it's likely worse then what they would show), and when Lector is getting into Clarice's head and the bars between them drop out of frame and the push in on Lector.
One of only three films that have won the top 5 Oscars (Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Director and Screenplay). The other two were It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

I still remember, as a kid, seeing the VHS in every damn store😂...for some reason the cover really fascinated me and I just knew I would love this movie...and I did😊 still do and it will probably never bore me, no matter how often I watch this movie...
Now that you've seen this, I *REALLY* recommend watching "Manhunter." It was one of Michael Mann's first ever movies, and was the first film to show Hannibal Lecter. It's from the novel Red Dragon, which happens before Silence does. There was a big budget version put out that was utterly inferior to Manhunter in every way. Can't recommend it highly enough. Absolutely amazing film.
The atmosphere in Manhunter is one of the greats in cinema history.
I love when I find out a TH-camr I watch has never seen a legendary film, which means we get to experience their first time reactions with them.
I envy that you get to watch these for the first time. There are so many films I wish I could see again for the first time and be shocked, surprised and thrilled by. Keep up the good work and enjoy.

This was the first truly gritty and dirty serial killer movie, in my opinion. The violence is horrible the forensic work is unsettling and there is no happy ending. A true dark masterpiece.

As much as I loved Silence of the Lambs, it’s the series Hannibal that really hit hard in the gut. While Sir Anthony stares at the camera and creepily hams it up, Mads Mikkelsen keeps it all behind dead eyes. Subtle facial movements. A polished practiced professional veneer. His portrayal of Hannibal Lector is built layer by layer episode by episode. It’s a masterclass of understated brilliance. It’s the polar opposite of what Hopkins did, but reaches the same gut wrenching goal. Highly recommend the Hannibal series.
That show is a genuine masterpiece
It is actually a very smart way to shoot the film and how the conversations look. So, you get to see BOTH sides of that conversation and the reactions.

Those front face close-ups were Demme’s thing. He utilized the same technique in Philadelphia (another great movie you should watch with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington).

The Silence of the Lambs is based on the book of the same name written by Thomas Harris. He based the character of Hannibal Lecter on a convicted killer he had met at a prison in Mexico. The part of FBI agent Clarice Starling is based on a real-life FBI agent, Patricia Kirby, whom Harris had met while researching the novel. The character of Jack Crawford is based on FBI agent, John Douglas, one of the first criminal-profilers in the country whose non-fiction book serves as source material for Netflix’s ‘Mindhunter’.
The idea to have an FBI agent using a serial killer to catch another came from the Green River Killer case where Ted Bundy served as an advisor. One of the most terrifying serial killers in history, Bundy was on death row when Robert Keppel and Dave Reichert sought him out to understand the psychology of the killer and find out why he was killing people.
The actor that plays Clarice’s boss is also the American submarine captain in The Hunt for Red October.
The dog who played Precious was named Darla and in the book Precious got adopted by Bill's survivor after she escaped

I was thinking of a movie which seems to have dropped off the popular radar, but which I enjoyed, and I think you would absolutely enjoy; The John Landis directed 1985 "Into the Night" with Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Then there is the cast of an A-list of great actors engaged in surprising cameos.
Lector's escape is one of those things you only get to really enjoy the one time, it's so great.

TV show Hannibal is so amazing. Cinematography is something else and fantastic score makes it one of the most beautiful shows ever made.

As a hardcore Hannibal fan, when NBC Hannibal was announced I seriously talked trash about it "nothing will come close to Anthony Hopkins" and everything else. But from episode one the show took my breath away. The cinematography, the soundtrack, and the writing, THAT'S perfection. It has so many details that only make sense AFTER the show ends that you simply have to watch it multiple times. And let's never forget that in my eyes, when I think of Hannibal Lecter, I think of Mads Mikkelsen

First time to your channel, and when I read the title, I was like how does a filmmaker go his life never having seen silence of the lambs; I had the realization as I started watching that a filmmaker is someone who does filmmaking and not someone who is like a historian of people who make film. Which is not to say that filmmakers aren’t those who are inspired and take from others in the field, made me think of it more as art rather than like a historiography test
To the question: "Who would have won in a fight between Superman and Hannibal Lecter?" The answer often given was "Superman wasn't real"
The movie is a masterpiece because it smartly films so much of the story from Clarice’s POV. It then becomes a movie that is not just a sensational psychological thriller, but is also a film about violence towards women. It is resonating and haunting for that reason.
Jonathan Demme and all cast here really made this film. The Howard Shore score is also fantastic.
The POV shots their doing is a film technique called "Pure Cinema" created by Alfred Hitchcock... The director said that's the approach he took when filming the movie. And it works to a perfection
I really appreciate that you picked up on the theme of women not knowing who could be the predator we've always been taught to stay clear of. So many people think it's sexist to be wary of men, but it's not that women think all men are predators, it's that we don't know WHO could be a potential predator and we have to be ready for anything. This movie does a perfect job of showcasing a woman's point of view in that capacity. Also, it has to be said that Barney is a total sweetheart from what we see of him and I think the entomologist who wanted to go out for cheeseburgers with Clarice was a nice, forthcoming guy too.
Read the books by Thomas Harris. Absolutely incredible reads with “Hannibal” being an absolute masterpiece!

I just noticed that Clarice's reaction when she handed him the questionnaire is what you'd do when you throw meat into a hungry lion's cage.
This movie is a masterclass in directing and acting.
I love how you compliment the editing and then one of the best edited sequences unfolds infront of you:D When Clarice stands at the door and no FBI in sight, that was just so intelligent editing! "Intelligent" is the keyphrase here, as the dialogue is so intelligently written. It is a psychological study of Clarice as much as (or maybe more) it is a study on Hannnibal. Both deserved their oscars for this.

You know Anthony Hopkins was only in this movie for a total of 16mins of screen time yet we all think of Hannibal when we think of Silence of the lambs which is just amazing..another fantastic reaction I adore your channel 💞 you should check out the sequel of this it's great too..
The "entrance" of Hannibal as Clarice is walking up to his cell is extra creepy because his eyeline is as if he was watching her walk up the whole way, but his walls are brick.

One of my favorite lines from his interview, I believe it was from Inside the Actors Studio, were hes talking about the snake hiss scene, and he seems to be implying that it was a spur of the moment addition. He said that in his mind he was thinking "Go on give it to her old boy " hissisis

Anthony Hopkins was THAT good in this film that he won the Academy Award for Best Actor....he was on screen for 16 minutes.
Other themes in the movie: The American flag, Clarice being small and always surrounded by much larger men.
She was also surrounded by Sea Men!
This movie swept the Oscars and picked up all the major awards. I think it's the first time a horror movie did that.
Also, the actor who played Buffalo Bill later played Leland Stottlemeyer on Monk. 2 very different characters lol.
