  • In this video, we’re going to look at a simple explanation of militarism as well as the arguments for and against militarism.
Militarism is a political ideology that emphasizes the importance of military power and values in the functioning and development of a society. It is characterized by a strong emphasis on military preparedness and the glorification of military virtues, such as bravery and loyalty. Militarism often involves the expansion of military forces and the acquisition of military resources, as well as the use of military force to achieve national objectives.

I've never seen this channel before and I understand militarism already lol. But I think your channel so far has offered some of the most unbiased explanations of concepts. You explained why some people are for or against it while clearly remaining neutral and not making things look inherently good or evil

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I'm opposed to militarism. There's a reason why the founders of the US were so concerned about the idea of maintaining a standing army in peacetime. The domestic military often proves to be more dangerous to civil liberties than any imagined foreign adversary, and that's before getting into how excessive military spending is detrimental to the general welfare.

Really good point! It’s quite surprising how much of each tax dollar is used on military spending. I don’t know the exact amount but I feel like it was over .50 of every dollar.

@@IllustratetoEducate You might be thinking of discretionary spending, which is nearly half military. Once you include mandatory spending it isn't so high, but it's still an awful lot and the US spends way more on the military than any other country on the planet.

Japan and Germany have developed a culture of punctuality, rationality efficiency and work ethic and have kept away from strong war interferrence the last decades
It said its related to millitarist cultural values , but while countries like italy , usa china or russia barely have such established values no matter how much millitary values or religious types they claim they have today .
Millitarism can be very awful or fascist , but it doesn't have to always be in that way .

Living on and around agriculture and animals it is interesting to watch young animals at what is basically "play" and "aggressive behavior" that often looks like fighting and yet often these competitors become great friends and spend time together as they continue to grow and mature. I enjoyed sports and athletics when I was young but I was never sufficiently developed to make a career of it in my opinion so while I like History and Math and Physics and other areas where I have taken some interest at my core and gut .... my instincts always tell me that sports and competitions and, yest, War is more natural and normal than sitting around reading. War and the Military are core parts of our human being and culture although I have to admit at times that it troubles me how it is used in practice and what we have become as a species as a result of the randomness of wars over many centuries. But surely modern arenas where men play Football or Hockey or Basketball or Soccer are more civilized than the violent arenas of Ancient Rome. But maybe it makes sense to turn this natural aggression and use it for economic expansion and to build an empire.

How can this be considered "objective" if the only four examples you expounded on were the Axis powers and North Korea, nations which are almost universally condemned as evil? Is it also not historically myopic and condescending to JUST cover the 20th century onward? Are we expected to be too stupid and/or ignorant to comprehend Rome, Sparta, and Genghis Kahn's empire in antiquity? Furthermore, for the pros, you only listed three examples but in the cons you listed four. Your video demonstrates you're _against_ militarism and if you're taking a side and favoring that side, you discredit your own claims to objectivity.

I believe that militarism, like nuclear energy, can be used for good; It's all a matter of it being carried out by somebody that places the interests of the state and its citizens over their own. This is where Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Hirohito, and many others went severely wrong. Also, the Spartans were the first society to enact militarism as common law. They made it work longer than any of the future nations to try it.
