    I had a thyroid issue that was causing adrenal insufficiency and low cortisol. I was so EXHAUSTED, and had absolutely no vitality. It took hospital visits, tests, vitamins, and meds to get my cortisol back up.
    This is also why I hate the hormone imbalance crap that’s online. From someone with actual hormone imbalance, YOU CANNOT LIVE A NORMAL LIFE WITH IMBALANCED HORMONES. Every single system in your body will suffer: your teeth, your eyesight, your skin, your gut, your hair will fall out, your eyebrows disappear, your heart skips beats or doesn’t work properly, you will not be able to think straight - it’s like having dementia, migraines, you can’t recover from illness and it takes 3+ months to heal a small cut, you won’t menstruate or you’ll fill a tampon every 20min… etc etc….
    Hormone imbalance is NOT, “I have belly fat I don’t like.”

    Thanks for this video! This reminds me of the surge of social media influencers and MLMs who have been capitalizing on the knowledge gap on female hormones.

    THANK YOU! This phenomenon made menu install tiktok actually. A major part of the content really was "you can't lose weight? It's because you have high cortisol / PCOS/ Adhd/ eat too much carbs/ eat the wrong way/ etc" and then they won't come up with a solution (because the viewer should keep watching and/or buy their program/ whatever)

    How am I first? And how is your timing so perfect, just yesterday I was blaming cortisol for my glucose levels, extra 20 pounds, and weight on my stomach (for the first time). Let’s just say 2023 has been super stressful, so cortisol gets the blame!

    Ironically, back when I was diagnosed with major depression and thus I probably had very high cortisol levels... I was underweight. This is just to reinforce what you said so well, human body is extremely complex and it's impossible to oversimplify its millions of tiniest mechanisms in a way that makes you directly correlate a hormonal response to the size of your belly. Having said that, I'm constantly appalled by the complete lack of scientific knowledge of the average person. Like, fitness influencers wouldn't get away with their third rate education if more people were just slightly more aware of, I don't know, the basics of the basics of science.
    Zooey is still the queen.

    Over the last few months I've realized that I've been chronically stressed (going on years at this point). Just for shits and giggles I took a look at the chronic stress tag on IG and TikTok and holy crap the misinformation, fear mongering, and generally people trying to sell you shit is ridiculous! Meanwhile what's helped the most has been spending time with people I love, workouts I enjoy, and therapy.

    It’s not about cortisol per se, but can we also hate how that last creator wasn’t just trashing overweight people but pretty much all bellies. That imagebof hers totally suggests that “if you have a gut than one of these things is wrong with you”, when in reality almost everyone has a gut that sticks out as least a little.

    Also, I already have enough bellies, and now I find out I’ve got a cortisol belly as well?😱Oh man…

    I feel like taking a shot every time Justina has to say "that's not how the body/science works" on her channel because of these influencers would be the best drinking game ever -- if you started from her first video to now and watched every single one in order, you may even go into organ failure (not recommended, but "funny" in theory). I also, as a psych major, absolutely hate when people use literal trauma as a way to sell more products. If someone has trauma, they need professional help, not some attractive woman on TikTok telling them that trauma is the reason they have excess body fat. It's extra disgusting as well because people who are traumatized are often more susceptible to disorders regarding their bodies and their weight anyway. And unfortunately, these ridiculous supplements are easier to access in the US than therapy for many. At this point, they're just firing off random hormone and chemical names in the body that gen pop doesn't really understand (and neither do they ?? lol) and then adding "this is why you're ugly and fat and nobody wants you and you're going to die alone but if you take this supplement that I get a kickback from you can look like ME *insert body check*" to it. It's disgusting and it's vile and we are in the darkest timeline. I'm hoping that we're hitting rock bottom so that hosting platforms require proof of certification or some kind of system that checks the accuracy or ethics of pushing certain products. That's not really my area, but I do know something needs to be done about this issue. As always, you have my continued support and respect, Justina (not that you need it, but you know 😉).
    EDIT: I've found that a good rule of thumb for avoiding BS is to not take advice from people online unless their certifications are right out there in the open and YOU KNOW WHAT THOSE CERTS ARE FOR so you know what is in their scope of practice. A nutritionist specialist, for example, is not a dietitian. A "yoga guru" is not a physical therapist. And having a PhD doesn't necessarily mean it's in the health field. And if someone is trying to sell you something, check out their conflicts of interest. If someone is trying to sell you a ton of somethings, run. Critical thinking skills for the win.

    The last woman, I totally remember from my short time on TT! 😂 But from what I recall a large percentage of if not her entire platform was dedicated to releasing stored trauma through strange-looking exercises.
    I think the leap is that stress causes our brains to shift back into survival mode, causing our bodies to store more fat (particularly in the belly?) out of survival so releasing that stress, through funky exercises becomes something to promote.
    Honestly, from what I recall of her channel and my own physical therapy sessions, it was not too difficult for me to buy into that. But I'm a holistic person; I realize it's not just the ONE thing that needs addressing.

    • @JustinaErcole
      @JustinaErcole  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just hate the correlation she makes between weight and trauma. It’s FAR too simplistic and implies that all fat people are mentally unwell.
