I can't seem to figure out how to release the emotions stored in my hips. Whenever I ask them if they want to talk about how they're feeling, they just kinda dissociate and grey rock me. Please make this a series -it's both hysterically funny and valuable, accurate information.
I cannot with that somatic workout. I’ve done all the therapy modalities. EMDR, somatic experiencing, DBT all real ways to deal with trauma. And guess what, I’ve lost over 200lbs and I still have to go therapy. Being a size 4 has not relieved me of my trauma or the need to see a therapist when things crop up. I hate it here, but I love Justina. Lol
Sometimes when i see "fitness" content, i feel like it's a weird mixture of undercover f*tish content and also at the same time preying on women's insecurities lol! Also: i always love this kind of format of yours because it's so relieving/ refreshing to see someone being honest and not always looking for a positive thing to say about anything - does that make sense?
Also: never look up stretching workout on youtube because theres so much s*xual content dressed up as stretching workout (or at least i always get these recommended)
"I cried and finally released the emotions that were stored in my hips". WTF? I mean I cried when I heard that but it was from laughing. To be honest, it's just as well this BS doesn't work - can you imagine the emotional damage this could cause to someone without the guidance of a qualified professional? What next? "Release the sadness in your elbows"? "Eliminate the anger in your ass crack''? Please keep these videos coming!🤣
Love this becoming a series. Would also appreciate a video on the somatic workout- I’d never heard of them and those clips looked like yoga to me 🤷♀️ I’d be especially interested in hearing how the two types of workouts compare/ contrast…
Great one Justina, you are such a positive voice in the fitness arena, calling out toxic behavior while managing to not overcorrect and become anti working out and being fit. Well done as always. I would love a sommatic workout deep dive.
I think these kinds of videos are very helpful for making us as consumers more critical, I find I'm able to spot the red flags better now whereas a few years ago, I would've definitely started falling for them.
I have more things to say. Regarding cortisol… I knew I had some hormonal issues. I fed into the cortisol thing and read that horrible hormonal book encouraging folks to take things like ashawaganda(linked to kidney issues) because I was constantly being told I was fat and to just lose weight. So I had a panel don’t prior to surgery and discovered I had a entirely separate hormonal disorder. Start with your primary or go to an endocrinologist. Cortisol issues aren’t super common, but estrogen related issues are way more likely to be an issue. Go to the doctor loves.
I really appreciate these videos where as you said, you’re trying to make us more critical consumers. They’ve certainly done that for me and I’ve learned to spot red flags and misinformation. I only wish I had this knowledge when I was in my teens and early twenties and thought spot reduction was possible and would have believed these videos. Also, thanks for a good laugh from your friend’s spoof 🤣
If you do this kind of series monthly, why not try alternating between crazy/bad videos and good ones? It’s nice to see what kind of good or informative content is out there among all the bad too
I agree with this, because even when we know people like this are fake, it’s so easy to immediately feel like “how did she do that when I’m working my a** off and nothings happening!” Maybe some videos of realistic trainers / influencers would help identify why the bad ones are so bad
Monthly series would be great!! Love watching the bullshit for a good laugh 😂 thank you for being awesome and helping guide those to not get trapped in the clickbait online
I cannot get over how much more I enjoy chocolate now that I only have it on occasion. I put my toasted almonds with my Cadbury bar.....🤤🤤🤤 Once in awhile. It's not demon food, but I know it's nutrient void, so I factor it in when I can for enjoyment. I factor it into my general daily calories. I did a lot of work looking at why I ate, when I ate, and how. I used to rely on high calorie, high sugar, nutrient void foods to relax *every night*. Now, I use selfcare routines to relax, berry tea, and journalling.
The "Actor Portrayal" in the BetterMe videos kills me. $20 says that the actress portraying a BetterMe model actually goes to the gym, or at least lifts weights.
That was fun, I love these videos. One thing they have taught me is to question everything I consume on social media and see if they are science based or a scare tactic or a trend. Much love from South Africa ❤
You always make me so glad I’m not on tictok. I’ve never heard of the somatic bs, but WOW. 1) it implies that all big people are mentally unwell and all small people are mentally happy and healthy. 2) it’s bad enough when exercises promise to make you sweat buckets or collapse from exhaustion, but now the goal/promise is to sob?!? 3) if you have unresolved trauma or constant stress, see a mental health professional, not a seedy app. 4) it kind of implies that losing weight is more important than our mental health, like these women are only dealing with their emotions so that they lose weight, not even get physically healthy, just lose weight. 5) way to take the positive quality of exercise helping many people with stress, anxiety, depression, etc., and totally ruining it for a super vulnerable population.
Sis ;) I want to see you sitting on the couch live scrolling and reacting to your fyp - the workout stuff but also like puppy videos and whatever random makeup things turn up. My friends and I do this sometime just for kicks & it could be a fun addition to vlogmas when u need a easy day
I cannot agree with your takes on these things MORE!! Please keep it up! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! And are working off you evil calories!! Lol
Hi! 👋 I don’t know where you’ve been all my life but your content and YOU are fucking ah-maze-balls! ❤️I had an eating disorder most of my life and almost died from it. I went to facility and I’ve been “recovered” for about 3 years now. I’m now married, and at 31 I’m going back to school to be an Engineer. I can not begin to tell you how many beautiful and smart people I meet everyday who believe this bullshit. I can’t believe the people that lie and try to sell them crap. I’m pointing people your way because every time I try to talk to anyone about any of this it always becomes a long topic of discussion and you put into words perfectly everything that we are taught as we heal from ED. Love you and your work! Never give up! You’re doing such great things!
Wow. I only came across somatic exercises on the advice of a friend. And it was something like dynamic meditations, not related to weight loss, that I really liked. It's astoundingly what different things different people mean by the same term.
Another swell reaction video 👍 What people get wrong about stress is that it is actually good for pure fat loss. 😖stress increases brain activity and your brain does need a substantial amount of calories. Some people also start fiddling and shaking when stressed which also adds up, although not a lot. Stress in itself does not cause fat gain. People tend to eat more when stress and that could be a factor. Even if there is a positive correlation, it's not significant. Diet and lifestyle always come first. Not that stress should not be addressed, but it will not contribute to fat loss.
Before I even pressed play, I like ooh, I hope this becomes a series! So, there's my vote 😂 -I would love a video on somatic workouts. They started popping up a bit, but mostly I'm curious bc I saw someone who was pretty pissed ppl are putting a weight loss slant on something that's supposed to be, I guess, therapeutic? - you are NEVER getting rid of Better Me ads now lol. I swear, I looked at a video for 3s too long, and they are forever in my algorithm 🥲
I am curious though what you think.of semantic work outs in themselves. As really your commenta were just on the style of vids and lanuage used. But are those workouts a thing? Also if noy already review wall pilates
Loved this video, would definitely watch as a series. Also, about the first video, I always love responses that are like oooor I could sit and watch tv for an hour because existing burns calories too. That is what tricked me as a kid. When someone would say do you know how much you have to exercise to “burn off” x food?!? Like actually I don’t have to do any extra movement to “burn” calories, that’s just called being alive
Every time I see some unlicensed influencer talk about releasing trauma from the hips I just think... What about therapy? Have we considered therapy? 😅 Actually usually my reaction overall is just, see a professional, not just the hotties from your social media feed! I won't automatically knock all non-conventional forms of wellness but sheesh, there's just too many red flags that I'm sad a lot of people get swept up in. Anyway, thanks for the great video Justina!
Haha fab video. "Minimal effort workouts" pmsl. Yeah good luck with that. I mean if I could look like Arnold by just doing shavasana, that would be awfully great.
Monthly series, for sure! And I'd love a somatic deep dive. It feels like pseudoscience, but I'm wondering if there's truth in it /anything we can take away to strategically add to our workouts or routines. Thanks, bb girl, henny, sis-tina!! 😅
Somatic therapy is real, however, it's not the least bit a fitness routine. It should only be done with a licensed therapist, and even then, not all are knowledgeable in this particular modality. At its core, somatic awareness is about understanding patterns of behavior that have been established due to chronic stress. Sometimes traumatic experiences are part of the stress response, but chronic stress also creates a trauma injury (think of the way a dimple is created on a rock with a steady and constant drop of water). Somatic therapy is meant to build capacity for stress by redirecting the activating event. I hope that helps.
Woooww, the tattoo one is insane! Wtf?! Do people actually fall for that? I hope not.... This is gone too crazy! 😮 Please make this a series! Love your comments ❤
You’ve provided another fantastic presentation. Those somatic videos are scary as %#@§. I mean, there actually is a form of bodywork therapy that also addresses stressors and/or trauma stored in the body. However, this work and the release of those memories is done with the assistance of a licensed therapist. This DIY concept, aside from not being scientifically accurate, could be emotionally hazardous.😬
Have you heard of the Spartacus workout? I've been hearing about it lately and one of my friends (ex military) is trying to get me to do it and saying it'll help me lose weight and gain muscle.
Well done! 2 thoughts: 1. Really glad I don’t have TikTok. 2. Speaking as a dude, the best development in training I’ve seen for the ladies is getting away from “toning” doing little if anything and doing regular strength training. Some of them deadlift twice what I do - no ego hit here, I just admire it. Toning just sounds… stupid.
@@JustinaErcole thank you! A while back I was working out near 2 ladies around my age (think late 50s) and I was telling them the same thing and they were doing a great job. Lovely conversation with solicited advice (my key tips past 40 - take flexibility seriously and protect your spine most of all) - I’m no trainer or anything but watch a lot of video and adjust at times.
Just wanted to mention that having low cortisol is miserable. Dealt with it a few years ago and needed to take medicine to get my cortisol back to normal. Hormones are supposed to fluctuate high and low naturally throughout the day/month. “I need to fix my hormones,”’is a phrase that infuriates me.. bc I’ve had true hormone dysfunction and it is the worst experience of your life. It may require a hospital stay. It’s not just “I’m fat and want to be not fat.” 🙄
Just wanna add that you can have a gym membership and work out at home too! I've been doing two days a week at the gym and 2-3 days working out at home. This allows me to work on purely strength training at the gym and do cardio/functional strength/mobility at home. This idea of ditching the gym membership to do home workouts is just ridiculous.
It's just this bigger issue of people not understanding how weight loss even occurs. The type of exercise isn't the determining factor, it's simply the energy in and out ratio.
When I had an Ed, I would think like the IG reel. I ate that? Then I have to do x,y or z. It is such a sad mentality and way to live your only life. Now that I am doing better, I can just enjoy a candy bar because I want to, without "earning it" by exercising or restricting.
I have A LOT of childhood trauma that I have not really processed (I was raised very religious), and I still see results doing resistance training 🤔🤔🤔 Maybe my trauma is accumulating in my muscles?!? 😱😅
“Storing emotions in hips” is something I have always questioned. I first heard it in yoga class where weight loss wasn’t even mentioned. But emotions live in our heads sooo….??? What’s that mean? Why the hips? I’d be more likely to believe that emotions are stored in the neck and shoulders because of the physical response to negative emotions (hunching, scrunching, stooping) but hips? 🧐🤔
I heard it a lot in yoga too. And we need to remember that yoga is much more of a spiritual practice but has been misrepresented by the fitness industry. So I don't really have an issue with that claim alone. But when people start using it to sell weight loss, I see a huge red flag.
I’ve heard it a lot in yoga (not related to weightloss at all). The only time I’ve completely broken down in tears in the middle of a yoga class was in pigeon pose which is a big hip stretch so I tend to believe it in a sense. But more in the spiritual side of things… not a fitness/weightloss things.
Yeah I have used somatic exercises recommended by my therapist and have also had emotional releases in yoga classes so I don't think it's a complete lie. It's just not weight loss related.
In my yoga class they talked about storing emotions in lots of places in the body including back/neck etc. Idk why these people keep focusing on the hips lol but when I heard it was more like, “different people store emotions in different places in their body”
it's rly not just the hips it's more about which joints you clench when you're stressed-some people have it in their hips others in their knees, elbows, etc but i think a part of it is also more spiritual
I knew solidcore was a cult. I went once (with a cute boy I had a crush on), and the instructor tried to love bomb me after class by praising my technique. I was like, "Sis, I've danced and done yoga and actual Pilates for 30 years. Of course my technique is dope."
Sugar is the no 1 killer in the US… well last night I watched a show about this killer in the UK and let me tell you - his name was not sugar and kept me up all night lol… on a serious note - it’s ok to overeat “healthy” food but not ok processed food? I mean the problem is not what we eat just how much of it… unless you eat poison then the quantity doesn’t matter… today I burned 318 cal from leg day - I might as well eat half a chocolate bar lol 😂 I can redo the session later tonight… jk. 2. I think you’re one of the few PTs that trains with her clothes on and doesn’t show us her internal organs (you know what I mean)… sometimes looking at naked or very revealing influencers puts me off and I can’t even watch them…. I’ve started following more men than women… the ladder video - 2 days until New Year’s Eve - baby girl, could you get me in touch with sis lady? I need to get (what was the sinched word?) by 31st Eve lol 😂… I’m dying - you’re so funny.
There is a YT creator and she is called theworkoutwitch. She had a short where she did a glute bridge variation that I used to do when I played HS Soccer. Her whole deal was releasing your trauma with these exercises. So I commented on her video saying I used to do these bridges when I played Soccer. She replied with a 😊. I asked her how it worked because I've done these bridges before and my emotional baggage was intact. She just deleted my original comment. I was genuinely curious though.
The third one is so interesting because she says "a girl I go to the gym with" ibut the girl apparently cancelled all her gym memberships (multiple gym memberships?) and they are still talking and sharing tips, so why is she "a girl I go to the gym with" instead of "my friend"?
0:52 I barely payed attention to what was going on, the rowing form is horrendous. Arms before legs and no body over? If my coaches saw this they'd pass out. Also the calories they say are wrong, 15 minutes of rowing will definitely finish burning off a snickers after like 10 minutes. Especially at a constant pace (I like rowing a lot so seeing that hurts my soul)
Definitely enjoyed the video. I love content that debunks bad fitness advice or just nonsense advice that won't really hurt you, but it's just not that effective. Also, I'd love to hear a deep dive into semantic workouts. I have a good amount of trauma that I'm processing. If that's a legit way to release the pain, then I'm gonna try. Even if results vary, but it's not harmful, I'm going to try.
I think the most important thing is defining what "results" mean. Because these ads are saying everything from hormonal control to processing trauma from their childhood to weight loss. They're just throwing spaghetti against the wall and seeing what sticks.
Gotta love all the claims about how a certain workout lowered their cortisol levels. Like are they really doing the blood test needed to prove that claim? Somehow, I doubt it 🤣
You might want to do some reading on nutrition before making “educational” videos. Sugar and candy are far worse for you than potatoes. Also, it’s perfectly possible to never eat them. Why do you assume people are going to binge on them? I haven’t eaten candy more than about 5 times in the past decade, and I know dozens of people who are the same way. I think you’re projecting your unhealthy addictions onto the people trying to get you to change.
Hey Richard, I've done plenty of reading and am a Precision Nutrition coach. It seems that you've completely missed my point regarding the negative effects this type of content has on people's mental health. I'm more than happy to send over the studies that support this.
I can't seem to figure out how to release the emotions stored in my hips. Whenever I ask them if they want to talk about how they're feeling, they just kinda dissociate and grey rock me. Please make this a series -it's both hysterically funny and valuable, accurate information.
Hahaha will do!
The way I ran to make this comment 😂

However, this work and the release of those memories is done with the assistance of a licensed therapist. This DIY concept, aside from not being scientifically accurate, could be emotionally hazardous.😬
I agree! Hoping to chat with an expert to bring on their opinion :)
@@JustinaErcole I look forward to that conversation.
Have you heard of the Spartacus workout? I've been hearing about it lately and one of my friends (ex military) is trying to get me to do it and saying it'll help me lose weight and gain muscle.
I haven’t!
Well done! 2 thoughts:
THE NUMBER TWO POINT IS A+ MY FRIEND
@@JustinaErcole thank you! A while back I was working out near 2 ladies around my age (think late 50s) and I was telling them the same thing and they were doing a great job. Lovely conversation with solicited advice (my key tips past 40 - take flexibility seriously and protect your spine most of all) - I’m no trainer or anything but watch a lot of video and adjust at times.
This was triggering LMAOO. I just wanted to yell at those people. 😂
And that’s why I’m here :)
It’s not just “I’m fat and want to be not fat.” 🙄
oh 10000%! I briefly addressed this in my full cortisol video too. Thank you for reminding people!
And also do your taxes 😂😂😂 that was hilarious 😂
Thanks for watching!
I like to hear more from you on somatic workouts, especially their effect on mental health but I'm not sure if that's your forte
I would have to bring someone else on as an expert, but I would be happy to do so!
yes please! @@JustinaErcole
Yes 100%! I also do this :)
Yes love it!
thanks!
Love these.
The amount of people thinking pilates will make you lose weight is insane.
Also, solidcore is NOT pilates!!! And its expensive as hell.
Love that your mindset has evolved!
I would really like to see your review of the somatic workouts! Is it legit or not??
Trying to find an expert to interview!
Wow if I hadn't watched this video I would not have known about the better me app....did this video just ruin my life? 😂
Hahaha I hope not!
I seen all these ads on the clock app 😵💫🤦🏻♀️
I have A LOT of childhood trauma that I have not really processed (I was raised very religious), and I still see results doing resistance training 🤔🤔🤔 Maybe my trauma is accumulating in my muscles?!? 😱😅
😂😂😂
I used to teach Pilates. Wall Pilates looks sus. And a great way to throw your back out.
I knew solidcore was a cult. I went once (with a cute boy I had a crush on), and the instructor tried to love bomb me after class by praising my technique. I was like, "Sis, I've danced and done yoga and actual Pilates for 30 years. Of course my technique is dope."
❤
That tattoo thing just CAN'T be real 😳
It is lol
I need to get (what was the sinched word?) by 31st Eve lol 😂… I’m dying - you’re so funny.
hahaha thank you for all of your commentary!
And that’s a red flag that she has no clue what she’s talking about haha
The tattoo one sounds very mlm lol
The third one is so interesting because she says "a girl I go to the gym with" ibut the girl apparently cancelled all her gym memberships (multiple gym memberships?) and they are still talking and sharing tips, so why is she "a girl I go to the gym with" instead of "my friend"?
I swear AI writes these things lol
That's so crazy. I burn more calories faster than someone who is smaller than me. It's genetics. Lol
Somehow, I doubt it 🤣
Right??? Where’s the labs lol
So cortisol is the new gut health
Haha seems like it!
I’m so tired of the word “snatched”. I picture all these people being grabbed off the street or something.
I love this! Hilarious!
So glad you enjoyed :)
Truly looove how straight you are 😂 cutting through all the bullshit for us....superwoman 🦸♀️
hahah so glad you enjoyed!
When you have to clarify this month because every month there will be something even crazier 🥲
Oh just wait until the new years BS
