It took my a very long time to get the nerve to watch this. A lot of my mates have, and so I just watched it. Justin was my teammate in Los Angeles for a team called Autobahn. Also when I was playing in the UK I was asked to go to Canada and play for Calgary Kickers and my first match was against Justin when he was player coach for Vancouver. I consider him a friend, I always thought of him as a very generous and nice man. As a player he was bigtime. Miss you J

@Twilight living oh give it a rest pal. Dont believe the media and dont believe anyone who is willing to throw a celebrity under the bus for financial gain. We see it today. I know full well that callum hudson odoi will be found not guilty. why ? because children always try and run away with the limelight when a celebrity is involved. The dude killed himself right. Killed himself. You understand what that means ? You fully grasp the concept of killing yourself ? When you spend years being abused for being gay, that would have been the cherry ontop. Dont pretend to know anything about a human being when your mind is filled with utter garbage

@Twilight living to take your own life son is anything but cowardice, i used to think like you, the prehistoric perspective of "suck it up you're a man", but what I've finally realised after educating myself on mental illness is that the mental torment someone must be going through to do something so drastically permanent as taking their own life is beyond the comprehension of anyone who has never experienced that sort of darkness, being cowardly doesn't even enter the equation, so i hope for your sake you never experience anything close to it

I resent the inference that Mr Clough had anything to do with Justin's demise. He did NOT perform so he was criticised by his boss for that and he clearly did NOT abide by the rules of the club which ALL players had to follow, Coloured or Not. Multiple N.F. players have been interview about their time at N.F. and to a man the say the loved playing for Brian and Peter..

That was heartbreaking. My brother came out to our family as being gay quite a few years ago. Because I was a soldier, it was me he was most worried about finding this out. But when I found out, it didn’t bother me in the slightest, I love my brother more than life as does my wife and three children. I can’t imagine turning my back on anyone in need of help. It can be a cruel world, but in amongst all that cruelty, there is always someone, be it a friend, family member or stranger, willing to help guide you through. Suicide, no matter who tempting as a last resort may feel, must never be considered, life is too precious and always remember that there are people around the world fighting to stay alive and would love an extra day or year to stay with loved ones. Very sad story.

I wonder if there was a history of sexual abuse very early on. If you look back at that era in which they were originally taken in to care, a lot have come forward in later decades to talk about the horrific abuse they suffered and in those times, unfortunately it was prolific. Being so young, it would have caused deep trauma especially with the stigma attached.

Sad story. Justin Fashanu was a great soccer player. The fact that he was gay and out in the open about it appears to have been his downfall and at the same time he was a brave man and ahead of his time. I question if the story the man who said he was sexually molested by Fashanu is true. The guy claims he was fondled by Fashanu and yet he stayed and went to sleep. Then goes hard at pursuing a legal case later after claiming he was molested. Sounds like he had another motive. Fashanu's actions to go on the run and then take his own life sounds like he was in fear. I can imagine the lies and the scrutiny would be overwhelming. I wish he could have handled the situation differently but, no one can ever understand what he was feeling at the time and what were his fears. I pray he found peace.

I lost my only brother to his choice to end his life, over 30 + years ago now. I still miss him everyday and I love him so. Not the same circumstances I know but my brother was a musician who was tipped to go places. The only places he went were all destructive. He was 30 when he died and the guilt of those around was terrible. I still have his old friends contacting me and saying 'He asked me if I had any jobs but I had just started out and could not help, I feel terrible still' and so on. I reply 'we all did all that we could at that time to support him we could do no more. It was his right to choose not to go to a GP for depression and to take his own life' . Not wanted by the police, but perhaps wanted in another sense by certain people. Reasons for my brothers death were not so clear cut and there was no note. So sad this young man also chose the same way out. I am sure with the right legal and family support this allegation in the US could have been cleared up. I wanted to write because no matter what people believe about who or what John Fashanu was/is you cannot know until you are in the situation how you would react, but it was at the end when he said how he felt about the loss of his brother that was genuine. It made me feel again the panic of the loss of my brother when I was told he was dead.

Mcsquare you feel like I do. I would never hate my family member for being gay. It's not a crime. My brother said he's had gay men come on to him in London, he just moved their hand and said " I have no issue with you at all. I am straight and that's why not interested." He's a strong muscular guy, he made me see 'gay bashing' is insecure men/women who had secret crushes on their same sex friends, and were mad about ever experiencing those feelings, and want to take it out on someone who embraces those feelings. John 'had no need to shut his brother out' it's not a frickin' crime!

Scrolling through my phone this morning and this documentary came up.i watched and deli the sadness of all those involved. Would like to think that things would 've been very different for him had he been a young black gay man/ footballer today. In all walks of life people are used/ abused and not always because of their skin colour, religion, sexual preference etc.but I hope and believe that that the world is more educated and understanding of everyone- be it if people or animals.its everyone's planet- understanding and caring makes a more peaceful place to live.those that shine the brightest sometimes have the darkest of times and sadly, it must be in those sad times they see no way out.we must never stop asking for help when we need it, but more importantly, we must always strive to see the need of others who don't always know how to ask for help- and show them compassion and tell they are not alone.love, hope and peace to all.

He should never have left Norwich, obviously. But, he could have had a real chance at Southampton, where he went on loan after the Forest debacle. This is what false accusations can lead people to - death. DJ obviously lied and tried to blackmail Justin. His body language response to the question speaks volume
His major problem was feeling of abandonment. He could not understand why his father left and never came back which is why he went looking for his dad. It’s the reason he confronted his mother on why she gave them up.

@sMansGuitars I don’t think so. If proven, false accusers should be punished to dissuade others from making false statements. For instance, the UK recently punished a woman who falsely accused a man of rape.

After watching this, it made me wonder about the relationship between Justin Fashanu and Viv Anderson the time he arrived at Nottingham Forrest. I personally would have thought that Viv Anderson (being the only other Black player at the club) would have played the role of "big brother" by helping him in settling down at the club and acting as his mentor. The documentary however shows no evidence of this and if indeed that was the case, it's a pity.

    • @seanfagan6022
      @seanfagan6022 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Viv Anderson was a Forest player who was NOT a big price footballer and judging on Justin's ''Star Struck'' actions he would NOT tolerate Viv's advice...VIV did NOT look for a top of the range car FREE and bring it back crashed every week.. Lots and Lots of players get transferred for huge money and they do NOT end up wrecking their own and others lives.. Pogda was transferred for £98Million and you NEVER hear his name other that Football topics..

John was eaten up with jealousy over his brothers talents and success. If John was any kind of loving decent brother he'd of stood by Justin supported him and excepted him. You never turn on your own brother. John made this tragedy all about him as if he was the victim in all this. Should be ashamed of himself! - He completely let Justin down all due to his own pathetically outdated bigoted machismo! He was more worried about what others would think & say rather than what his brother was going through. Should John be ashamed of his behaviour toward his brother Justin? .. YES!!...
I only hope Justin is at peace now! He certainly wasn't shown the love & support he deserved in this life, if he had been he may well still be here today!

Hindsight is a wonderful tool, and to apply present standards and protocols to Justins' situation will skew the result. However, why did DJ rush to get a lawyer so quick and before reporting to the Police a possible serious sex crime? He clearly also indicates that the decision was joint by the use of, 'our' and his haste to correct it.
The only truth I can see is that a potential for football greatness was lost. I doubt we'll ever get to the truth about the sex allegation.
