Took Derby from the second tier to the best in the country, took Forest from the second tier to the best on the continent. Many of us play Football Manager, Brian Clough actually lived it.
I have done that in Football Manager. Doesn't diminish his REAL abilty at all.Best Manager England never had.

Peter Taylor was also a huge cog in the machinery. Look how clough failed at Leeds without him(amongst other reasons)...Taylor did the scouting, Clough the man management.
@@paulthrutner9114 Peter Taylor was underrated as a scout. Was one of the best at finding good players especially in the lower leagues that Cloughie could turn into first division footballers.
I love the bit, when Revie states, you can’t win it better than us, we only lost 4 matches. Cloughie only lost 3 with Forest’s first title, 7pts clear of the great Liverpool side, when it was 2pts for a win! Also went 42 games unbeaten, & two and a half years unbeaten at home!

When I get a bit down after my team Hull City have lost again,, I put this on and my spirit lifts , wishing the great Clough was still around, he really was unique!!!
No man can ever fill Cloughie's boots it was a real shame it didn't end well with the great Peter Taylor. Cloughie was the best manager England never had. Football has never been the same without these 3 great men Peter Taylor Brian Clough and Brian Moore We will never forget them R.I.P. 💙
Always had a special fascination with Cloughie..As a young Liverpool fan i wanted to know more about the guy who knocked us of the European Cup when we were the holders and then proceeded to win it BACK TO BACK... Ever since then i've had a slight obsession with him.. A REAL Genius..End of story..YNWA
As a Rangers fan I'll always have a special place in my heart for Gerrard and similarly I have profound respect for Clough's legendary achievements 👍

Cloughie seemed very relaxed and comfortable with Brian Moore as he respected his opinions and knowledge of the game... therefore a great, honest interview. They sadly don't make them like that anymore... RIP to both men and a great loss to football.

The world is a much poorer place without men like Brian Clough. I grew up with him being on TV all the time. Some of the things he came out with. Like taking the Leeds Utd job, then calling them bad champions? God, we miss you Sir Brian Clough. He should have been England manager and knighted aswell.
Not only one of the greatest football managers of all time, if not the best, but one of the greatest men to have ever graced this planet, the respect and admiration Mr Clough adored, even by people who didnt like him, is unprecedented and will never see the likes again.
Thank God this stuff has been recorded. Outstanding in every way.

Rmbr Justin Fashanu. He destroyed a young footballer on the strength of one great goal. His career nosedived & he committed suicide. I can't forgive him. He was a bully & destroyed careers also. Bob Paisley was a great manager & looked after players & bought wisely. If players stood up for themselves he got rid. Stan Bowles, Hugh Curran. A dark side.

Then Jurgen Klopp came along.

There will never be another Cloughie! The game both on and off the pitch has changed into something I barely recognise anymore. Brian was controversial, honest and big headed, but we loved him dearly and he knew it! RIP MY FRIEND.
What a great watch. Two absolute masters of their professions, two distinct voices. I miss Brian Clough and the time he represented. Football has changed, some good and some bad. Cloughie was a genius and I hope he is never forgot. Well done to the uploader of this for helping keep the names of Clough and Brian Moore alive.
One of the funniest quotes I ever heard attributed to Clough was when someone asked him if he thought his managerial style was dictatorial and he said 'well if one of my players has a problem what we do is we sit down, we have a conversation, and then we decide I was right'.

@David Robinson yes, agree. That was all very sad. And I think you're dead right, about the effect it had on Cloughie. He wasn't going to go to Taylor's funeral. But his family made him. Said you've been mates for many years, you used to have his kids climbing all over your shoulders. Jolly well go. And he did.

Fascinating interview. So terribly sad that Cloughie and Peter Taylor were unable to reconcile before the Taylors death.
I blame Clough for that.
He mentioned in his autobiography that he wouldn't answer Taylor's calls.
Clough had heard rumours that Derby were interested in signing John Robertson and he should have stopped the transfer if he didn't want it to happen.
He was the manager, after all.
This is such a fine interview reflecting a mutually deep loving knowledge of the game from both the consummate Brian Moore one of best commentators of the game and Brian Clough one of the giants of English football.
Retrospectively the English FA made a colossal error in not appointing Clough as England Manager. Although highly outspoken much of his knowledge, coaching skills and of the insight of the game could have well brought England to the World Cup finals on more than one occasion.
Had he stayed at Brighton too I have no doubt in time he would have taken then up to the old First Division like Forrest and Derby.
The interview segment with Don Revie on the very day of his sacking by Leeds is actually quite a subliminal message of how things can pan out long term when at face value Brian was at his lowest and Revie the newly appointed England Manager. Within only a few years Revie was in the football wilderness never to return and Brian still had the First Division title ahead with Forest and 2 European Cups back to back, never matched since.
Brian Clough made such a huge contribution to football and was fascinating to watch and listen too because beyond the 'bighead' persona much of what he said made really sense.

We would not be talking about the last time we won the world cup 66 if those in charge put their own dislike of the man aside and chose a manager on his ability, which was exceptional, R.I.P England's greatest manager never to be.
We tend to forget how good of a striker Cloughie was. Like Jackie Milburn, he was seriously overlooked at international level.
Mr Clough was just simply one of the all time greats. Honest and believed in his own ability,
He was quality
But he earned it. No fluke. He was a great striker himself with a strong work and social ethic. Many great people get soft and relax when they have some success. Clough was his own man and strong willed. Driven with a good character. Too bright and outspoken for the English FA. And all this bollocks about tapping players up - this was how it worked 50 years ago - it was who won the heart and mind of a player and their family / guardians, who got there first. Brian would drive 300 miles through the night to make an offer face to face. He got them a good fee (like Trevor Francis). I call that determination and effort. Nothing corrupt at all.
He also was a bully & his destruction of young Justin Fashanu was deplorable. He wasn't a £million pound player like Trevor Francis. He bought him on the strength of one great goal. Crazy & bad management. Fashanu just wilted with the pressure & got thrown to Notts County for a fraction of the £million he spent. The poor lad went to the dogs & commited suicide. Norwich also grabbed that million instead of growing his talent. Clough had plenty bad too.

Clough was a great manager no doubt,....but don't underestimate the influence of his number 2 Peter Taylor,...his player scouting, and finding the right players,... played a massive part in all the successes of all the great Clough teams at both Derby and Forest....his input was priceless

Woke up early,couldn't sleep,and came across this video purely by chance. Riveting stuff. Am old enough to have actually seen Clough play for both Middlesborough and Sunderland,against my home team,then Swansea Town. He was a great centre forward.
This video gives a real insight into Clough,the man,and I admire him more after having viewed it. Brian Moore did an excellent job. He was a great commentator,one of the very best.
Clough's Derby County and Nottingham Forest teams were always a great joy to watch,albeit only on TV.
Clough was unique,and makes the modern day Manager's seem extremely dull and boring.
***** Hmm,that's a tricky one.They were both great players,but came from different eras. I think Clough had retired before Shearer was even born. Wikipedia gives us that Clough scored 251 goals in 274 games,against Shearers 283 goals in 559 games,both excluding any representative games. So on goals per game,Clough wins hands down,but he was playing a lot in the old Second Division,(now The Championship),whilst Shearer played in the top Divisions. I'm going from memory there,so forgive me if mistaken. Shearer also took penalties,and his total includes about 60 successful spot kicks.Really impossible to say who was the best,I'd take either of them.
Cloughie was a one off I'm a life long liverpool fan since 1977. I was in Derbyshire last week for job interview had to visit his resting place. What an honour to pay my respects to the great man.. humble gravestone no mention of his OBE or football success just plain old Brian Howard Clough amazing never one for the limelight.... Can you imagine anything comparible to this today? Titles delivered in the same decade of the biggest rivals. And would have been European cups delivered if Derby never got robbed by Milan

Mourinho is second rate to this guy. His teams were small city teams without the millions of today, he won 2 European Cupswith Nottm. Forest and the League with Derby by means of great managerial skill. Believed in passing the football and his sides were a delight to watch. Thanks very much for this upload

This guy spoke his mind with honesty, Mourinho is just a self-obsessed ranter.
+john wells He was tremendous as a team builder, incredible taking Derby and Forest to the top, with Taylor, but not so great alone or at maintaining top standard for very long, as Ferguson was. Mourinho's Champions League with Porto, treble with Inter were exceptional and he did very well at Chelsea till this season. Clough's style was better than Mourinho's though. The split with Taylor and his alcohol problems were a great pity.

Ferguson and Mourinho only managed big city sides with pots of money to spend. I wonder how both of these two would have fared with lesser sides. Let's not forget that in 28 years of managing Man U, Ferguson only won 2 Champions League trophies. Against Bayern they were outplayed for 90 minutes and against Chelsea the penalty slip by Terry was the deciding factor.Brian Clough performed miracles and made lesser players into top class ones.
+john wells Ferguson managed Aberdeen and broke the Celtic-Rangers domination of titles, and won the European Cup Winners Cup. Name a manager who has achieved that in Scotland since. It was because of his feats with Aberdeen i had faith he would do well at United. Porto have not won the Champions League since Mourinho left, neither have Inter Milan. Clough did indeed perform miracles with Derby and Forest, but he failed at Leeds (reigning champs- albeit in a tricky situation and not given enough time, he still handled it poorly) and had a hard time at Brighton. His career ended sadly with relegation and alcohol problems and I repeat he was not so great without Taylor, who deserves more credit than he often gets. I think if they had been in charge of the national team there would have been a good chance of England winning a major trophy. You mention Ferguson having some luck in Champions League finals, but Mourinho was unlucky with Chelsea. Cup competitions do involve more luck than league titles generally, Barca had luck in winning more than once too. Clough was unlucky in one semi-final with Derby v Juventus, No doubt there was some element of bad luck for United as well as good in Champions League. My point is that they have all been excellent managers, none perfect, with different strengths, Ferguson the best overall, i.m.o, for the full length of his career and achievements.
There were many great managers. Shankly, Busby, Paisley, Stein however Clough's achievements at Derby and particularly Nottingham Forest are IMHO without parallel and make him the greatest of them all when you consider what the clubs were when he took over.

I can’t even fathom what Clough did at Forest happening in this day and age. Taking a team in the Championship and in just three seasons winning the Premier League and champions league (twice) is essentially what he did. The closest comparison is what Nuno is doing at Wolverhampton, but until he wins something, Clough is still in a league of his own

The man commentating this documentary is the same who commentated the 'Goals' Highlight video from Italy '90, the late Brian Moore. I believe he must be the best football commentator I have ever heard. He spoke with such a marvellous fluency and perfection.

And the fact that Nick Clegg has a knighthood and Brian Clough didn’t, means the whole system of knighting is meaningless and might as well be abolished.
Cloughie was one in a million. His football wit and wisdom was brilliant. He was a character. His later Forest sides were entertaining, but I believe the Alan Hills and Ronnie Fentons did much of the tactical work for him, as he was kind of simplistic. 4-4-2 and a solid back and centre. He was that creative catalyst who could get even average players to play like they were special. Examples abound, but Garry Birtles and Peter Davenport do spring to mind. Not to mention the young number nine.
If he had the England job, he would have played a 4-3-3 in reality, possibly Francis/Regis/Woodcock in a trident for the 1982 WC..brought in properly players like Statham/Cowans/Viv Anderson/Morley/Hoddle/Devonshire and better used players like Mariner..and played Shilton in goal not Clemence..

Miss you Brian, most successful ever, working with nothing, hopeless lost causes to the absolute top of the game and then some, Derby was Div 2 title and then around 3 seasons to Div 1 champions, Forest, survived a relegation scrap and plugged away for a few seasons until reunited with PT, scraped promotion 3rd spot in Div 2 and won the league the next season and after that European Cup and League cup and European cup for consecutive seasons, plus all his personal playing career and personal accolades and many other games and other benchmarks, astoundingly outstanding, on reflection he was actually, very humble in a way ... saw his son score winning goals at Wembley and also play for England, what an awe-inspiring legacy.
As a LFC fan growing up idolizing Shankly, Clough was an icon.

Clough has been one of my favourite players alongside Schole, Beardsley, Craig Johnston, Sheringham, Mark Hughes, Dalglish, Rush, John Aldridge and Lineker. These men are really men of good character

I still recall the game in te 5th round of the FA cup Swindon Town Vs Aston Villa FC when Steve Froggatt scored the winner but we were so lucky that day to win. Keep the videos coming pal. I'm a lifelong Liverpool Fan and ex season ticket holder but even to me Cloughie is a true legend and the idiots at the FA missed a trick by not appointing him the England Manager, especially after he won the European Cup Twice with Forest.

A one off ahead of his time.. Clough and Taylor the best duo since Morecambe and Wise, 2 Ronnie's etc.. Had he been the manager at England, he would’ve at the very least led them to the World Cup final, if not win it. His man management was what set him apart. Tough, demanding, a bit abrasive at times but he got results and his players played their asses off for him

An amazing interview from one of the very greatest managers in (world) football history. It must however been apparent to the FA and the biggest clubs, who should have signed him purely based on what he had achieved that the great Cloughie had already developed a serious drink problem by 1980, 81.

I've been a United fan since the early 1960s and I'm still bemused at why we didn't get Cloughie to manage us when Matt Busby retired. He was on the way up then with Derby and was clearly something special. As for England, the biggest cock-up they ever made was not giving him the job after Sir Alf. Football today needs men like Brian Clough.
Clough would not have tolerated Busby sitting on his shoulder and all that type of thing. When O'Farrell replaced Busby he had to force him to vacate the manager's office.
Busby could not relinquish control and the players still looked to him for advice. Cloughie wouldn't have stood for that for sure.

One of the biggest regrets I have is that because my dad didn't like Derby (the city) or Brian Clough I wasn't allowed to. As such I never grew up liking Clough or wanting Forest to do well. It's only since then that I appreciate who he was and what he did. A true football great. Watching old footage of Derby and Forest, they played the right way.
Dad's eh? You don't want to hurt their feelings when you're young. My dad despised Ayrton Senna and McLaren and only after he died (Ayrton) did I come to appreciate the man's genius behind the will and Ron Dennis' management.

BRIAN CLOUGH was probably 1 of the last man managers that could COACH player's to be better, that for me is the true and genuine legacy of MR CLOUGH
I was a Man united fan. So Cloughies teams meant not a lot to me. But in the last week or so I have been watching vids about him. Now at the age of 75 I have come to realise what a great player, and Manager he was. I had never taken into account the achievements he realised. I was Man U, through and through. And as such I missed out on seeing a great Manager.And great teams that he managed. Hopefully I have now made up for my single mindedness. RIP Brian,the greatest manager that England never had. Why? Because he had an opinion. How dare The English FA deprive us of a great Manager,because he was opinionated.
Alf Ramsey was opinionated! But there we have it.They we’re never going to let an England Manager have that sort freedom again.

It's sad to hear him talking about the fallout with Taylor, as this was filmed not long before Taylor died. I'm sure that failure to reconcile went on to haunt Clough later in life.

Brilliant manager...Single minded and driven. Loved listening to him, he always made me smile.
Sad to hear him talk about Peter Taylor and where it all went wrong. Even sadder to see Brian after this interview and after Peter passed away and the great regret he had that they never made up. Friends are everything in life and all Brian and Peter's achievements and the special times on that journey that they shared, far, far out weighed the issue Brian had with Peter.
Nothing polarises how important friendships are than death.
He made football careers & ruined some too like Fashanu. He is responsible for his downward spiral from aspiring footballer to wandering footballer trying to repair his career after Clough kicked him out. He was then wanted by US police & suicide. He bought other names that didn't work out like Stan Bowles, Hugh Curran. If anyone stood up against him they were shown the door unmercifully.

@Angie Russell Referring to Bobby Moore who is a Legend himself, lifted the World Cup for England as Captain but Brian was right, so what if he tried tapping you up. Happens all the time in football more so than ever nowadays but its kept between themselves. Just keep it to yourself.
Cloughie is the type of person who would arrive in heaven after his death, and if god wasn't running heaven as cloughie saw fit would say to god, "now look ere, yoong maan, we both know yoo can't do better, now get yer aands out of yoor pockets aand get out there aand shape 0op"!!

Cloughs wife, Barbara says in the 2008 programme, that he and Taylor were like brothers and should have made up. Huge regret but she's sure they are together now...The last relegation season (Cloughs biggest regret) and maybe the slide into drink due to pressure being in sole control wouldn't have happened.

What a great interview.
One of the game's most genuine characters. Nothing phoney here, whatever you think of him. For all his amazing success (on tight budgets), a lot forget what a talent he was as a player; Christ knows what you'd pay these days for a striker with his record. I guess we'll never know how much of his managerial success was down to Peter Taylor. But I can't believe that Brian wasn't at least an equal partner in that prodigious success. Rest in peace, Brian. You gave the world some amazing football teams, and stories that are part of the game's folklore. God bless you, Brian.
Let me first praise the interviewer, BM, absolutely brilliant, bringing out the real tremendous personality that was BC. My football club is Leeds RLFC and Clough's style of character and management would have fitted very well with us, down to earth and honest!
