I've been watching your channel for a long while now; and I grew up in a seaside town in Florida and spent a lot of time around boats, so I should've learned this. But I never did, and I played with netting a few years ago but never learned it properly. It’s 30 years since I last used a needle to hang and repair salmon nets. Brings back memories of repairing a tear in the dark at 2am with rain running down the back of my neck. We used 2” and 5” meshes on our draft nets.
- I can't remember what we used to use in the trammels. I only do the odd bit of pot making and mending now. But its a skill that needs keeping warm or you soon forget. ;)

Morning John, great tuition once again. This is a skill I learned watching my grandad make shrimp nets on summer school holliday trips to Hastings. I guess I was about 7 or 8! I used the skill later, when about 12, to make purse nets when I was ferreting. Never thought of making lobster pots etc, now living in the west country, and semi retired, I guess I have some new projects for these dark evenings! Thank you again. Rich

Excellent instruction. This is the way I was taught and for some reason it's hard to find this method on youtube. Most everyone does it with separate pieces of line tied off to another piece of line and then woven together side by side. The sheet bend mesh knot I think is the perfect middle ground between stiffness and speed. You could tie carrack bends for an extremely strong net but that would take twice as long per mesh knot, and a square knot would be a little slower than a sheet bend, but also be a very loose/compressible net.

Today my first net knitting. Got me the needles from Ebay and started with a parcel string. After some time, I succeeded. With your tutorial it is a piece of cake. Thanks a lot.

Another great video John, well done. I've been buying different types of nets to construct drop nets for cliff fishing. They all have been made from cheap non-abrasion resistant cord. After seeing this i'll be making my own from superior cord from now on.
Rob J - Thanks Rob. A stronger chord will help but the edges are still at the mercy of the rocks. I’ve got some old hose pipe that I’ve slit down the middle and tied around the frame to try and cut down on the line damage 😉

Brian Marshall - It’s all in the practice. Once you’ve got it right in your mind it’s really simple. If you can’t get away with making the whole pots look out for any damaged etc and you can now fix them. 😉👍🏻🦀🦞

P.s. crab pots can be difficult, the trick is to get your meshes and knots super tight. 😉

RHINO 54 - Most things are simple once you understand them 👍🏻 The net mending can be tricky but you just need to take your time. It’s a great skill to have and unfortunately one that is being lost. My grandad taught me as a young boy. 😊🎣🐟
I need a drop net for the summer so i will start practicing tomorrow. I imagine it will take quite a few attempts (to say the least) and i have nowhere here where i can buy a needle, so i will have to make that first. But as you say, it can be used for so many things and it is a usefull skill to have and be able to pass on. Thanks again.

@@TheFishLocker i live in the north east of France, the nearest coast is unfortunately 300 or so miles away. I am only able to sea fish a few times a year and chandlers are not common here. Lol. I will look at e-bay, thanks

Watched all of your videos and love this one too. I will be learning this skill from you to make crab pots etc because in Australia, crabbing is hugely popular even though placing pots is not allowed in ocean waters. But we do have many estuaries where we can place our pots . I've just bought a few recently and this skill will no doubt save me $ in the future. I never knew what the rules were back home in the uk because I never used pots (and still haven't got around to doing it here yet, Just having bought my first, second hand boat) and am looking forward to it.
My question regarding the rules back home is, What markings do you have to place on your floats for identification purposes, how many holes are allowed in the CRAB pots and what dimensions do the pots have to be. Because fishing is huge over here, there are big restrictions on how many fish we are allowed to 'CATCH' of a species with restrictions on sizes and also what we are allowed to have 'IN POSSESSION' (including crabs, lobsters and shellfish). This is done to protect stocks for the future. Some sharks are protected and for me, it is a nightmare knowing and identifying fish because there are so many species. I'm sure you've heard of abalone, well for eg there is a size restriction (sensibly imo) but did you know you can only collect them using hands alone (no tools).
Also we are not allowed to keep any fish that get accidentally caught in a crab trap and are required to return them unharmed (makes sense to me too). Just as a side note, I still have and use my 'ABU 484 Atlantic zoom' from new probably before you were born. It held the world beach casting record (can't remember the weight it cast) and sooo looking forward to getting hooked again. Thanks again for passing your skills and knowledge on as we did not have internet and youtube back then. Deepest thanks, John.......You might consider doing a whole videos on making crab pots :)))
Nomad - A crab pot video is already a work in progress. 😉 There are many rules and byelaws governing fish and shellfish here in the UK, and they vary slightly by area. Most creatures have a minimum landing size. Also, you can’t catch fish or shellfish for sale without a license. Personal consumption is fine. If memory serves you are allowed 10 pots. And to keep 2 lobsters and 10 crabs provided they are above minimum landing size. And depending on what district you are in your fishing gear must be marked with your vessel name. In some areas you also need a limited shellfish permit - Free to own but required all the same. 👍🏻🎣🦀🛥
@@TheFishLocker Thanks for clarifying that John. Sounds similar to over here but never knew the rules of pots back home. I've only been here for about 17 years and came over at 52yo. Luckily, I fell in love with a woman who decided what our future was gonna be lol. Most of my family, children and grand children are still over there in Newcastle. 10 Pots? We are only allowed 2 per person and I'm certain other rules are hugely different too. If you're interested in Australian rules for catches. Try the NSW maritime website. I know laws and rules are different in different states. I'm sure it'l make interesting reading on boating and fishing. Tight lines mate. Have a good day.
Great video especially on how to mend a broken net! I am very new to knots and I was wondering if this style of net is suitable to use on my 4x4 to separate the cargo area? Is it strong enough to prevent items from flying into the compartment in case of an accident? Thank you
Thank you very much. I’m hoping to learn to mend hay nets for horses. Sometimes the horses break the net putting a hoof through. It is dangerous if they get a foot caught and panic so leaving it open is very unsafe. Your instructions are very clear and much appreciated. Do you have recommendations for materials and where to purchase needles?

- You could but you would need to make it from fine mono and that is not easy to do. 😊

It is just the same as this but you go around and around. Or do a sheet and sew 2 edges together.
Hi mate! Brilliant video and extremely helpful. Would you be able to answer a couple of quick questions for me? 1) 3mm braided twine, is this polyethylene or nylon braided twine? Is this "tarred" twine? I am stateside, so I am having some difficulty finding what you used, but it looks very nice twine to use for this project. 2) Net needle: do you happen to recall which size you used for the net making example? If memory serves I used a 10" and an 8" needle. The twine is braided twine, not twisted. Thats the main thing. 😉👍🏻

Hey mate greetings from down under, have a question, in the video you are just going by experience I suppose of the size of the mesh. I would need a net card/board to get consistency (rookie) if so how would I go about it. Thanks
You can just use a piece of wood or plastic as a "mesh gauge" after you've been doing it a while you learn to get them all the same size just by eye. 😊

Aluminium is better for making it light, steel is better if you need some extra weight.

I watched a chap some time ago and he used a gauge on each mesh, is this a goog thing for a complete novice if yes can you demonstrate for us? I really would like to try net making.
You don't need a gauge, it just adds more things to what should be a simple process.

How do you join the two sides to make a tube and then close the bottom? Do you drop the number of stitches?
Or just stitch them together.

basa364 - Haha. Same here.🤣🤣 These are skills I had before joining the Navy. I think they try to teach you 4 knots - and yes, one of them is your shoes laces.lol. I did teach a few lads splicing and net making whilst I was in, but the majority, if they couldn’t drink it or f*ck it they weren’t interested. 🤣🤣
