I'm 75 years old and this brought back memories from childhood. it was always the little ones job to load the needles.pop used to buy pre made nets ,the needles were used to sew the net to the larger cords that held the corks on one cord and the lead on the other heavy cord and this creates the gill nets. we also made our lead weights. Thanks for the trip back to my island home.

So sorry about your loss. My mom and Dad passed in 2011. I remember he would weave turtle baskets. It’s so bad they have to leave us but that’s just the way it is. Hope they are in a better place. If I get this down I’m going to teach my grandsons so maybe they can keep it going and not let it die out like so many other things. Good luck netting.

Never take em for granted. Don't be like me. Ask the questions now learn about your bloodline! Learn it and carry it on! That's the one thing I regret in life is not asking my grandparents those questions and not spending enough time with them. Cherish every eternal moment because it's the only real time we have, the moments.

When I was a kid a LONG time ago, an old Finnish fisherman showed me how to make nets - we made a badminton net for my mom. Then when I went to a military survival school I made a crude net and was surprised at how well it worked. Recently I started putting together a survival kit for backcountry flying, and the survival nets commercially available seem like junk to me, so I decided to make my own. The first one was a disaster. The second one was much better, but a few meshes are wonky. Hopefully the third time will be a charm. It's been fun learning. Your how-to videos were the best I could find, thank you for posting them.

Thank you very much for showing this. I am Fisherman and learned it, but you actually explain it better than my teachers did.^^ One step i would like to mention. If you fill the needle with yarn, do not rotate it in 360°. Rotate it 180° and than back. Othrwise it will create loops to the yarn and meshes.

Thank you so much for renewing my memories of net making with my Dad. I am 69 years old now and have wanted to remember how to do this. Dad was a Captain on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, Virginia and became a Master Pilot Tugboat Captain for Humble Oil. Wow, that goes back a bit doesn't it? He stayed with the company through all the changes and retired from Exxon years back. We made hammocks, nets for fishing when that was still allowed and had great times together. Bless you. I am starting to do netting again.

That netting needle’s proper name is a “Fid” or fisherman’s fid. My father was a commercial fisherman who fished the Grand Banks and George’s Banks back in the 1940’s & 50’s. I was a kid back then when he showed me how to make & repair a net. He was so adept at it that he would only use his fingers as a gauge for his left hand with the fid in his right. Great video. Brings back old memories.

As a child my family used to visit other family in Maine for two weeks every year. My uncle was a lobster fisherman and I spent many days at the piers and on the boat. I always saw others repairing or making their nets, but never got curious enough to know how since I live in upstate NY, and never had the need for a net. Watching this takes me back to those younger years. I am now disabled from Diabetes and wheel chair bound, and looking for a hobby to help fill my time. I am going to give this a try, although I don't know what I will do with the netting I create. My mother used to have a net embellished with sea shells we collected and lobster balls hanging in our home for many, many years. Thank you for this tutorial.

I used to watch my father and uncle tying nets at our house in Cocoa, Florida. They would attach the top of the net to one of the steel posts in our carport and they had a shuttle that looked just like the one you were working with. Their mesh was a little finer as I recall. They were making shrimp nets for casting. Of course that was a long time ago, close to sixty years back and I haven't seen it since. We moved from Florida to Alaska when I was nine, and I developed different hunting and survival skills.

When loading your needle, put 2 turns around the pin and it will hold without you having to pinch it with your fingers. It'll also hold when your needle is nearly empty. If you don't have a gauging board, you can just use your fingers, 3 fingers is a good mesh size, but you can use 4. If you're using your fingers for gauging you can work from right to left by putting the needle DOWN through the mesh on the left, then twisting the mesh between finger and thumb before you make your sheet bend knot. Incidentally, I thought when I was watching your video, that it would be good to show how to tie the sheet bend knot before going on to the net making part :) I hope some of this helps. All the best, J

My dad was a commercial fisherman on the Mississippi & Missouri Rivers, I grew up on the river. Raising hoop nets & trammel nets since I was 5. I was the bait pilot, I raised nets and I pulled the hides off the catfish. I didn’t learn to make nets until a few years ago, dad taught me his method and he was fast. He could build a 14’ hoop net in three days hoops and all and have it ready for the tar bath. I finally decided I needed to learn how it was done, and I just about missed it. He taught me and a few months later was diagnosed with dementia. Today he doesn’t know who I am, lives in a nursing home and the rest is history. Glad I learned, I’ll be teaching my son!

Now I could tell you were a bit nervous and all I kept thinking was, If I had to make a video like this I would have been studdering, messing up my words, my hands would be shaking so much also. But you did great. I plan to spend my next couple days giving this a go. My memory is poor so I know that if I just get 3-4 rows done it will stick in my head for sure. My dad taught me how to weave a pencil cover using string or yarn and a wood thread spool with a center hole and five nails. I still remember how to do it 60 plus years later. You did a great job here.

    • @KnottingKnots

Yes, the skill with this one is to get the first rows very even before you start to add rows. After that, you want to stop so that you can say I have made a net. As you are making the net, well for me anyway, it is a calm thing to do and I do not want to stop. Cool way to teach net making, its called a breading needle on trawlers. never seen it done with the little board before, cute trick for beginners on the internet to learn with but would soon have gone over the rail in the middle of the night in the middle of a gale in the middle of the English channel when the nets got rumpy, not a bad idea for a novice though.

I am a crocheter and have learned to tat. The stitch you are doing is what is used in tatting only the knots are all on one thread so they can be pushed together to make tiny loops. Tatting thread is like sewing thread and uses a shuttle that is about 3 inches long. My grandmother's is metal and has a removable bobbin. BTW I was watching to learn how to make fishnet for hair nets.

Welp. I don’t know why I am learning to make a net, but you did a great job teaching me. Thanks.

No, not yet. I have just done a video on the round net and that was a bit of a nightmare at the beginning. I have now added your suggestion to my to-do list.
