I work for Northern Tool + Equipment and I sell a ton of these to customers who are either 1) too old to start or maintain their gas saws 2) in no need of a large gas saw they have to maintain or 3) widows or young home owners with no need for a big gas saw.
Greenworks is also a great company with an industry leading warranty and great employees. Seems like Cody missed the mark on this one.
He misses the mark on many things. He gets things done... just not always correct or accurate.
He really did miss the mark! I have one that I use for somewhat of a furniture making hobby, and it’s exceeded my expectations by far in its ability to cut really bud logs….

I've got 2 Greenworks 40V, and I've been very pleased with them. And I do some big trees. (Did put a longer bar on one)
These small saws aren't meant for logging lol, they're meant for pruning small fruit trees, hedges and such. They're supposed to be smaller, lighter and more agile than a big traditional gas-powered saw. Also there's no fussing around with carburettors and fuel mixing, no chance of gas going stale in it because you only use it twice a year, etc.
You can't compare the power of this to a big gas saw in the same way you can't compare a small cordless drill to a giant heavy corded rotary hammer. They're two different tools meant for two different applications.

Exactly. It's like comparing a privately owned Cessna 152 to a Boeing 747. Makes no sense. This product was designed with weekend warrior home gardeners in mind, not professional loggers. Just like my cheap, electric power washer does perfectly fine at washing my car once a month, but would not be great for a commercial fleet washing businesses.

Greenwork tools is a fairly reputable brand in my experience. As far as I could tell the saw preformed as advertised and survived a toss off a tractor. I'm not sure the comparison to your dewalt electric saw is valid considering Greenworks also make a 60volt 16" bar saw. I would think comparing it to the cheapest cordless recip saw would be a more fitting comparison considering both would fit better pruning limbs and cutting 2xs than felling even small trees.
They were one of the first in cordless saws. They also have an 80 volt saw, that can take a 36" bar. That is a pruning saw. He didn't try to compare or he would have gotten the 16" one.
I own the greenworks 60V 16" saw and it works like a charm!!! Been cutting down 20-26"x50-75' trees (have a total of 30 to do) and it works amazingly! Now, I do have 2 spare batteries so that deffinatly helps but it is sooo nice not having to worry about the gas and all the noise of a gas saw.
@@masonryel1502 I've got a 40V 16" bar greenworks saw and in comparison to my father in law's gas chainsaw with similar bar - it's just the same, only a lot quieter and a ton easier to use without worrying about mixing gas with oil and all that stuff. Just put a battery in a charger and that's all that is to it ;). In comparison to my saw that one in the video is just a toy for kids really with 24V battery ;).
I got the 12" bar with 40v batteries with the lawnmower and both are heaping piles of garbage. My 10" corded b&d lady chain saw will wax the greenworks.
I have the 40volt one with a 16 inch bar and love it I got tired of my gas and oil one using it maybe twice a year. Spending most of the day cleaning it out to get it to run. If I was lumber jack i would use gas models but over 60 and use a saw once or twice a year you cannot beat a cordless saw.☺
I like using the pre-mix fuel they sell. No ethanol, it's treated, and has a long shelf life-so you don't have to worry about your fuel lines rotting away or your fuel going stale and gumming up the carburetor if you don't empty it out from the previous use.
Yes it does and not buying gas means extra $$$ saved for a new chain when needed 😁
I have had the 16” 40v for 10 years & it finally died last week. I wouldn’t recommend it for an 8 hour job but 2-3 hours is about all I want to spend running a saw. I’m buying another one today for $150 with a 4ah battery and charger. The battery alone is worth $100. I also have a 10 year old greenworks push mower and weed eater that’s still going strong.

If "Joe homeowner" with three trees total on his property needs to zip up a fallen branch ? Why buy the gas saw when it will sit in the garage for a year at a time .not everyone needs or wants a pro saw .this thing has its niche

he should buy a dewalt/Milwaukee then the battery will be interchangable with his other tools at least.
If you think you´ll ruin a gas saw when not properly putting it away for long periods, then same thing will happen to batteries maybe the lithium ones are bit better but not using a tool is one of best ways to ruin it...

I dropped my 200t topping saw from 40 feet when my lanyard broke. I repelled down fired it up and went back to work. Still use it today.
My MS250 feel off the truck on the freeway, came out of the caring case, and broke the casing. Fired right up! Still running years later. Stihl MS250

Seems perfect for taking out to the woods once a year and getting a Christmas tree, if that is all you need it for.
No. When you actually need it, the battery is probably flat. And after 2-3 years, the battery will be done anyway and the saw basically garbage. Spend the $60 on a Silky handsaw instead. Heck, spend $30 on a cheaper handsaw, and buy beer for the rest. Used once a year, it will last you a lifetime and then some. If you absolutely need an electric chainsaw for garden use, just buy a corded one. It will never run out of "fuel" even if it's stored for 10 years, and it will outlast this one many many times.

@@Kowalski301 Absolutely, I keep a hand saw in my car have for years and needed it twice, it's relatively inexpensive, compact, and always works. I stay away from cordless tools because the batteries fail from age without being used much unless it's something you use often. The only cordless tool I own is a drill-driver, though I'm thinking of getting an impact wrench. I have many corded tools that go unused for extended periods of time if they were cordless they wouldn't work when I need them. I have a 16" Remington that's twenty years old only failed me once (bad oil pump $6.00 to fix) works well and has decent power. And if there is no power available, no problem I have a generator. And another consideration for people who only need power tools occasionally is how easy it is to find good used corded tools cheap.
I think then it would be much bether to just loan friend sthill or go rent the saw
Look at what Greenworks are doing now with the 80v line. Pretty impressive. I have a STIHL that I love but my 60v Greenworks saw has been put to work for 6 years now and no issues so far.
Oh yeah, my Greenworks 80V 18" Chainsaw has all the torque. Bit of a slow spin-up when you pull the trigger but it will basically never stall in a cut. Tested by them to cut 100 pressure-treated 4x4's. So 20-30 16" log bucks on a single battery is a distinct possibility.
It is a really good chainsaw for it's use, you're just comparing it to something entirely different, it's meant for small gardening tasks.
WE East Coast guys use that 10" saw to trim our nose hairs.

I lived in Alaska for 17 years, just moved out. We went through about 14 to 16 cords of wood each winter. I used a Poulan Wild Thing for years and it worked like a champ. I think I paid $100.

Cheap, works, and you don't gotta worry about your fuel going bad. It's good enough.
I love how he gives it good reviews and does everything he asks of it but slams it saying don't buy it. He is the real tool.
I actually think it is a decent little saw for the right purpose. Limbing. I like a light saw for this and used to use a Homelite 12" gas. I'm currently using a 14" Ryobi gas. Both heavier than what is needed. Quiet is a good feature too. After knocking off all the limbs, I then buck up the rest with my Stihl. Since I don't do this kind of work all the time, the Stihl gets heavy quick, so if I can use a lighter saw for limbing, I have more stamina for the real work. The downside for me with this saw is that it is one more battery to keep track of. I bought a Ryobi electric chainsaw several years back and once I realized it was a manual oiler, I never used it. The current one I think is an autolube and maybe I should pick one of them up. I have lots of Ryobi products and batteries. (I know, the snobs don't like Ryobi; can't beat them for price/performance though in my book.)

@@DrLoverLover my Makita battery one does. The chain will run down and stop within 1 second when you release the trigger and the brake should be more or less instant by spec.
I would like to see how this compares to just a good quality pruning saw in terms of cutting speed etc. As ultimately pruning is its intended use.

Good review. I bought this because I wanted something one step above a bow saw because my arm was getting tired. Works well for the small limbs I deal with the suburbs. I think I now know what the next step up would be. Especially if another tree blows down in my quarter-acres yard.

I'm a Wranglerstar subscriber for many years, and I actually just recently purchased this chainsaw as part of a bundle from Greenworks. I got a new job last year which paid enough to allow my wife to quit her job in anticipation of having our first child and also allowed us to move from our small townhouse to a 1 acre property. At our old townhouse there was no HOA, so I was responsible for taking care of our small lawn. For that, I had an old school reel mower, as well as a Greenworks string trimmer and blower. I have had those two tools for about 5 years now and I am still very happy with them. When we decided to move to a larger property, I knew I would need more outdoor tools to maintain it. I saw a bundle from Greenworks which included a 21-inch mower, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, string trimmer, and this chainsaw, plus 3 interchangeable batteries on Amazon for around $700 and I decided to pull the trigger on it since that combination of tools would take care of basically all of my needs at a very reasonable price. Since I already had two tools plus batteries that I was very happy with from Greenworks, plus a snowblower and additional battery I picked up from them right before the start of this past winter which has also served me very well so far at our new home, I had no reservations about sticking with the company due to my positive experience with them. Let me also preface this comment by saying that I grew up on a 10 acre wooded property my father owned, so I'm a bit "spoiled" by having access to much nicer gas-powered Stihl chainsaws. I literally just spent this afternoon cutting up some tree limbs that fell over the past winter at our new property and let me just say I am completely blown away by how well this little saw performed for what it is. The most legitimate criticism in this video is the bar tension adjustment, which let me tell you, took me some time to get used to. It also could probably have more regulation on the amount of bar oil it uses. But that's about it as far as my personal criticisms go. It's definitely not the greatest tool ever created. But still, I am incredibly happy to call this little saw my own considering what I paid for it and what it can do. Would I recommend this kind of chainsaw to an established homesteader who needs to fell trees on a daily basis? No. Would I recommend it to an aspiring young proho who just needs to take care of some fallen limbs here and there for the time being? Absolutely and without hesitation.

I have the 10” Greenworks chainsaw. Great product, I do recommend having two batteries if you are really going to be cutting up real trees. I did a 18’ pine tree, using it to cut the branches off as well, with two batteries. It wasn’t the biggest tree, but probably tops for that chainsaw. The saw is great for quite maintenance around the yard, farm etc. Its light and easy to use, my wife can use it. I have a STHL for real stuff, but nothing wrong with this GW saw, uses the right tool for the right job. Simple.
I would have killed to have a saw like that when I was doing ice carvings, no worries about it rusting or getting electrocuted.
It's perfectly fine for a small 10 inch bar saw. I've got the 18 inch with the 40 volt battery that sees heavy use and has done it's job well for over a year now. Also got a lawnmower, blower, and hedge trimmer that used the same battery. Great products.
Not sure this tester should be considered an expert.

This was made for the homeowner to do some light trimming in their yard, not to go through large dried logs. I actually have the 36 volt, 14 inch bar model, and it was great when I had some large trees in my yard start dying and falling.
That's a good point you raised at the end there mate. When I was 12 years old my father gave my his old 012 stihl chainsaw as he'd gotten a bigger saw and I've still got it today at 27 years of age. I'll get it out soon and me and dad can take it for a run I'll leave my big crazy saws at home. Those things have a unique sound to them.

He did one in Oct. 2017. Shouldn't be hard to find. It was a $100, gas powered saw with I think a 22 inch bar. It was a decent saw. Extreme Power I think was the brand.
I had a saw like this for cutting up pallets on the job site.It served us well for it's intended purpose.

Here in the U.K I usually see Greenworks tools sold through one of our tv shopping channels, at least I used to. Not so sure if they still do, as I don't watch that channel so much these days.

Just seeing your gransfors bruks axe there made me think, i recently ordered the “ray mears wilderness axe” which is a colaboration between him and gransfors bruks ! Id love to see you do a review on one ! Slightly longer than the sfa but shorter than the scandinavian forrest axe , same weight in the head as the Scandinavian but with more of a wedge toward the rear its absolutely magical (still has a thin bit so maintains that great cross cutting ability )

We referred to little saws like this as a "yard saw" for 5-6 inch stuff or less mostly pruning in a yard etc. For that I actually tell people if they don't use their saws often to get one of these or a corded version with what the gas does to carbs anymore if they sit for any amount of time.
Greenworks is actually a legit brand though....and watching the attempt at getting that cover back on was like those infomercials you sometimes see :'D

Those little chainsaws have their place clearing light weight brush and such. Also I'm willing to be a bit harder on them than my bigger saws. Its strange. I'll take those plastic saws into places that would simply destroy my husky and they come out swinging every time. It doesn't hurt to have options.

I got to admit, that impressed me. About 15 years ago, I borrowed a Ryobi mains electric chainsaw (16" bar) from a mate to cut up a couple of short pine logs I had, and it was rubbish. Even after sharpening the chain, being careful of how much pressure I put on it etc, it would not cut though these logs (only about 10" or so in diameter). The bar kept slipping, the chain stretched, and it was a nightmare to use. This machine looks as though it would have actually made it though these logs I had. For just over $100nzd, that is not a bad buy for someone who has a few trees in their back yard, and needs something to take care of the odd branch or whatnot. Thanks for the review, Cody

I own one of these got it as a bundle with a pole saw, chain saw, trimmer 2 batteries for $120ish. Works great for cutting up pallets and trimming branches. Have a gas saw for cutting logs.
I have a 12 inch dewalt saw 20V xr max and i love it for smaller jobs.. Ive cut tree's that are 1.5 feet wide with that 12" bar but it really shines in yard use... I just cleared a huge maple limb at my step moms place with a 12 inch bar on a dewalt saw with only two 4 amp hour batteries.
for bigger jobs i whip out the Stihl ms 260.
I bought one of those three years ago. It works great for what we use it for. We go on forest service roads in the mountains ( the few that are still open), and use it to clear the overgrowth to protect our vehicles. It is cheap, but it's light and easy to haul.

Good video , definitely not a fire wood saw but for kindling or yard cleanup might replace a bow saw. Maybe throw in the car or truck if you live in a place where you need to clear the occasional tree to get home but not much more than that.
I have a 80v greenworks 20" battery walk behind mower and it works amazing! Rated near the top in all the reviews I could find. It is considered as good as the EGO, the best out there and a good chunk cheaper. I don't know about other greenworks products but this little chainsaw zeems pretty good for what it is...
It was driving me crazy that he never took off his gloves to get the bar back on.

Love my pressure washer! Going on 3 years for $100 every week to wash 5 cars.
I have the same one. Never used a chainsaw before. It came as part of a pack with a weed wacker and leaf blower and sat in the shed for a few years before I needed to take care of a dead tree in the back yard. It was slow work, but it was plenty capable. If felt anemic, like a toy, but a bit of patience was all I need to make use of it. Now it'll sit in the shed for a few more years until it's needed again.
It would work in place of the machete from cold steel you tested the other day. I can see it being used to clear that light brush you were working on.

If you live on a small city lot, and the only time you cut wood is when you get a Christmas tree or trim branches on one of the three trees you may have on your yard. This cheap chainsaw might be for you.
You actually gave it some good compliments for it being the “worst” saw. It’s obviously not intended to cut something that size. Very true those batteries won’t last long. You’re better off going electric and dealing with the extension cord if only for occasional use. I’m 35 and got an electric Lumberjack 14” when I was 14. $45 and 21 years later, it still works great for smaller jobs. I’ll upgrade when I need to, but it still gets the job done for now.
I know what my nieces and nephews are getting for Christmas this year.

Not unexpected results from a lower voltage saw. I have the 40v greenworks saw with a 16" bar. I don't have any of the vibration issues you experienced with the DeWalt. Sure, it doesn't have near the power of my petrol saw but I bought it to be a convenient trail saw to keep in my truck. Works beautifully for that. I can buck a face cord with one 4ah battery too.
Try the Ryobi 40V chainsaw. I have one as part of my 40V yard tools setup so I have multiple batteries to swap out with. So far it handled everything I have used it for including a 13" Oak tree stump.
you should test the Poulan brand out, my brother bought one 10 years ago and its still kicking today after years of use
For a home owner who needs to prune some crape myrtles and small stuff like that it's just fine.
I just discovered that a local hardware store sells greenworks. I'm looking at the exact same chainsaw right now, $140, 4,4 rating *and a sword and chain from Oregon! Ouch!*
I used a 40v Greenworks with a 16" bar for felling pecker poles on our property for a few hundred trees. It was great...until I met the Dewalt 60v. For the bigger trees and when bucking in general, I use my Stihl MS362c and LOVE that one. The 40v Greenworks saw uses Oregon bars and chains. Not sure about the one in the video.
Regardless that saw is not meant for that type of work. For brush cutting sure.

East coast Canada here and I haven't seen many saws below 14" myself. 16" bar is the norm

chad gammie you miss the point. There is a level of every product for different needs. Not everyone in the world needs a 36inch bar, likewise, not everyone needs a Ford F450 limited to commute to their office job in the morning.

Just for small odd jobs, I got one from Harbor Freight. It's not gonna run in the logging industry, but for small jobs around the house, I love it. It's light. It's quiet. No, it's not a Husqvarna but it works great. You should try testing on of those. Lynxx is the brand.
We sell these as Stiga (same machine but in yellow and grey). They class these as a chainsaw for use in a small garden. The UK and some parts of Europe have small gardens. Usually most people in the UK buy these for cutting up small logs for a log burning stoves and fires.

I have several hundred trees on my property, mostly black walnut and a variety of oaks. I have used my little Greenworks chainsaw to trim trees and to cut down dead ones for a couple of years now. It works great and runs quite a while on a 2.5 about battery. I recommend it for light medium work.
I have a Oregon CS300 16" electric (~$370 on Amazon) that runs with the Oregon 40 Volt 4 ah battery packs. Got it at a farm auction for $10, because it looked like someone dropped it in a bucket of oil then cleaned it off with a drag through a fresh plowed dirt field and left it out in the sun for a few years to dry.
Once cleaned up its proven to be impressive for a battery powered saw!
In fact amazon do a petrol version cheeper with a 26 cc engine
It could be useful for just thick branches and thin trees
We use a cordless li-ion husqy at the sawmill to do the cutoffs on the boardway when our grader does upgrades. Two batteries a ten hour shift usually and Id have to agree with WS, save up for something better unless u got kids or grandma wants to do some yard trimming once a year. I would like to see how long it would last cutting one inch boards at work just out of curiosity.
When I bought my house the prior homeowners left this saw (12" bar and 40v batteries) along with the lawnmower and pole saw, they said they loved them for reasonable tasks and had the stihl 22" saws (didn't leave me) for bigger tasks. They said they bought the battery combo two years prior. The lawnmower was broke, long shaft for the blades demolished the bearings and completely unusable. The chainsaw works but rather use my bow saw. The pole saw is handy but that's really the only thing I use of the combo. In the end, I can definitely see why they left these equipments and took the stihls.
If you need something to use in a once every few months situation, I would just get a hand saw. No battery, no gas, no oil.
People underestimate how quick handsaws can deal with small/average branches.
Might have been easier to put the cover back on without your gloves on. 🤣. You need some cracks and calluses on those west coast baby hands.

Wilhelm Something especially when running a saw. When changing the chain I guess I can see the use, but when actually running the saw, a glove will do nothing to protect you. And if fact may pull your hand into the chain. But that’s just my opinion/how I was taught

They used to make a really good electric mower, metal blade(most use wire like a weedeater), metal deck, smooth big wheels, spring height adjustment and plenty of power. Used it for years. Gave it to a family member who still uses it 4 years later and he doesn't even put it away out of weather (wouldnt recommend that though).

I don't know about the chainsaw, but I have the hedge trimmer and the pole saw, while definitely not as good as a gas powered sthil they work pretty well. The hedge trimmer be able to bend at a 90° for topping taller hedges and the extend ability of the pole saw have both been very useful.
I have the Greenworks leaf blower. It's not great, but it was cheap and it does what I need it to do. I can see that it won't last long. I can "feel" the brushes grinding away when I run it. We'll see. I only use it to blow out the garages ever few days to weeks.

Cody, you need to stop reviewing cheap tools for what they aren't. Review them for what they *are*. Yes, it's a piece of garbage. Of course a $70 chainsaw isn't nearly as good as a Dewalt that goes for hundreds.

That wasn't his only consideration or final judgement. He always addresses the fact that it's cheap garbage, and sometimes he recommends it for laymen or children, which is totally fair.
For me I don't need to cut down red woods. I just need something that cuts branches and that won't break my heart or wallet if it dies, which makes me the target audience.

Hey Cody I was just watching your video on batteries. You took out your olight flashlight out of your pocket and it was on. If you turn the clip over the button, it protects it from being pressed and saves your battery.
