I purchased a 10" Knipex adjustable in 1978 if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure it was before I hired on with my last employer. (Not 100% as I am getting old and that was a long time ago.) but I still have them. I had to take the spring out a couple of months ago and bend some spring back into it as it was opening up on it's own but put it back and they still work. As a matter of fact, I had them in the tool drawer in the house for a month or so last winter so I wouldn't have to walk out to the barn to get them and my wife got used to them being there and now I have to leave them in the house.

Exactly that's why the comparison is not fair, we could also say that an electric motor has an efficiency around 95%, and a thermic one about 30%,
And there is more in it, like the total taxes the state takes you on electricity/gas.
Certainly not a "that simple" comparison.

Totally agreeing with you on this one. I find the battery chainsaws are great for the 'few minute projects'. The corded or cordless Stihl chainsaws are common in timber framing shops where chewing out a mortise and tenon before cleaning it up is a great place for this saw. Same goes for arborists doing work up in a tree, the battery life lasts a lot longer when not put under massive non-stop load and so it is a nice convenience when up in a tree. But if there's ever a task that requires trustworthy dexterity, gasoline is the way to go. Especially when temperatures are below freezing and you're relying on that saw to work and the batteries die from the cold.

I like all of them, but my go to is the Makita for the quick cuts just for the fast start stop and ease. I think they all have their place. I kinda feel like this isn't a fair comparison. I dont think DeWalt designed that saw to go head to head with a gas powered one, but rather more of a home owner needing a chainsaw a few times a year. I would think most people who are going to be cutting a cord of wood won't even consider an electric and again, I am not sure that was what it was designed for. Anyway, great videos and I am a new member to the channel, love what I am seeing so far.

Thanks for confirming that my bias has reason! I believe battery tools in general will continue to make strides in their ability to get work done in a simple, effective manner, HOWEVER, there will always be a limit! Gas powered tools, electric power tools, pneumatic nailers all have huge advantages in their ability to perform a great volume of work for an extended period of time. Being a contractor I will admit I use the 20V/60V battery systems every day, and most of the tools have been fantastic, but they don’t hold a candle to “the real thing”. These battery “yard tools”- string trimmers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers- only offer convenience and zero emissions. When you really need to get a lot done you’ll have to grab a real tool and some gas or electric to go with it! For now at least!

  • @2LateIWon

Great comparison. I feel just like anything it has its place. Just not a replacement for an actual saw. It's awesome to have smaller electric saw and then a big gas one. The convinience of the electric one is just priceless. You can cut at Sunday noon next to your neighbours fence and nobody's going to hear you. You don't have to start it if you just need a one quick cut, you just press a button. When we go cutting with my dad, I just use the electric one to clear the smaller pieces, cut the branches etc, while he cuts the big trees with a big gas Stihl saw. Works really well.

whereas the petrol chainsaws are mainly used when dismantling old roof trusses where you have to saw a lot of old beams and rafters. all in all i don't want to miss either one of them, especially as we only need two batteries, as as soon as one is empty, the other one is already fully charged so that you only need to change the batteries and therefore there is no big difference how long you can work with them

I have to agree. I purchased the 20v dewalt chainsaw for a land clearing job we were doing. I wanted a saw that we could keep near the chipper and trim brush if need be. As soon as I took the dewalt out, it was lighter but I noticed I was using more force to cut trees. That translates to energy and time. And at $180 for the dewalt, I took it back and bought a Stihl MS170 for $170. That saw hands down is amazing. Cuts almost anything we needed to and is light. We only used the MS440 magnum for stumps. For the price, power, and energy you need to expend, buy the Stihl MS170, use VP 50:1 fuel which stores for a minimum of two years in the saw and get cutting.

My wife bought us a Makita 16-inch battery chainsaw with the charger kit. We didn't want the camper or the vehicles to stink of gasoline. We love our Makita.
But why do we need a chainsaw? We go camping several times a year in Wyoming. They had a big pine-beetle kill problem about a decade ago. Now those dead trees are starting to fall over. We need a chainsaw to get into or out of the back roads we travel on. It is a common problem for us to have to remove a dead tree that fell over. Sure a gasoline saw would do better, but it is hard to sleep in a camper or tent the reeks of gasoline.
I just ordered a second battery saw for my wife's vehicle. She sometime lets me go off by myself and then joins me later in the week. She may have to remove a tree or two without me being there to do it for her. We have tow straps in both vehicles to drag the cut up logs out of the way.

The thing about the DeWalt chainsaw is that it isn't meant to go out and cut a couple years worth of firewood or fell a whole forrest. It is meant for intermittent and quick work. A lot of tradesmen in the construction industry use them because you can just pick it up and make several large and fast cuts without having to worry about rip starting a gas chainsaw or finding your mixed fuel. DeWalt has a little ways to go to make the fit and feel match a pro gas chainsaw, but for how long they have been making them they have done a remarkable job.
The bulk of the cost is in the batteries, not the tools themselves, which can be transferred from tool to tool for cutting, drilling, lighting, weed eating, mowing, etc.. unlike the gas chainsaw which can only perform that task.
The most important thing is that these type of electric tools are for convenience use. Gas motors do not sit for long periods of time very well, unlike electric ones that can sit all winter and fire right up when you need them to clean up the occasional fallen tree limbs from a storm or other intermittent light to medium work...
To normal people, the number of cuts per charge isn't that relevant because of battery swapping and quick charging. The amount of cuts per minute though is useful information though! I am rather curious though about the weight difference between the two chainsaws...
Also, I hope you are not running the exact same chain on both chainsaws, as the DeWalt are designed to use a narrower chain with a tooth that is closer to the raker (takes less wood per pass to make for less resistance while cutting). This may be why you are experiencing a lot of grabbing and jerking.

120 million joules energy/gal gas; ~1 cup fuel tank gives about 7.5 million J energy in your gas tank
For any voltage battery, capacity in mAh X voltage x 3.6 = Joules of energy so for your case we have 7500mah x 40v x 3.6 = 1.08 million J

I’ve never been a fan of electric saws mike you said they feel rough when you cut with them, but at work when I was running a chipper all day they gave me an electric saw to make the occasional cut so it would feed through the chipper and it was perfect for that

Basically unless you're a lumberjack a normal homeowner will love their electric saw.

Even in clearing a few acres of land, if I'm bucking or cutting anything 6 inches or less I go for my 60 volt dewalt over my stihl. With kickback control it feels a lot smoother and safer and when bucking is super nice as half the time you set your gas saw down running and are dragging branches away.

Not all that surprising really. Fuel has a much higher energy density compared to even the most modern batteries

I seriously LOL'd when you were going to fill the gas up and spilled the oil, not to make fun of you but because that's EXACTLY the type of the that happens to me all the time. It's nice not being the only one.

Just AWESOME. Just another reason to buy quality gas saw. Add all the extra batteries to gas cost and the decision is very clear. Thank you for the vidio.

Electric 12 minutes to cut 25 rounds
Gasoline 6 minutes to cut 80 rounds
So it would take 45 minutes and 3 batteries to do what you can do in 6 minutes with gas!
Battery operated tools is planned obsolescence at its finest.

battery powered tools are convenient however in my experience these battery powered saws seem to have issues with batteries overheating before they're dead.

So you plan to tell me that battery drills and impact drivers are obsolescence?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Watttttttt123 Absolutely. Every 5 to 10 years they come out with a brand new battery platform and your old stuff is garbage. You're forced to buy new; That's called planned obsolescence.

We have an 1985(ish) 031AV. It's been set on fire. It's cut counless rounds. It's been smashed bashed and trashed. It still cuts like a scalded dog. No chain brake...no problem!
However...the electric saws are gaining ground and I'm looking forward to their place in the future. I don't automatically discount them now. Technology is good when developed in a free market. They have found a useful niche.
    We shall see.

I was kind of hoping to hear what they sounded like, the electric vs the gas
