Preach! Some people just don’t have that sense of self preservation. Well that and I’m sure a good portion of people who use tools or equipment have no idea the horrendous injury’s that it can inflict upon you if used improperly. Ive seen hydraulic injections, amputations and large scale 3rd degree burns. Not pretty, it makes you think thrice from then on about all dangerous operations.

Exactly. I use a petrol chainsaw regularly and I am always wary of it and treat it accordingly. When I got my first bad kickback I was real glad I was properly positioned and stable footed. My Helmet and visor didn't need to protect me because I had done that with common sense, but had I slipped at that moment, they would have saved me.

It’s the same dang argument that people make about steel toe boots, “What if something drops on your foot that crushes the steel cap, and crushes your foot” , well if it’s strong enough to crush the cap it’s gonna destroy your foot without the steel cap, but there’s a wide range of things that would crush your unprotected foot but not the steel cap, so that is where the steel toe is beneficial.
Same here, there’s a chance in the worst case scenario that you’ll fall on the saw holding the trigger down and it’ll eat through the Chaps. But without the the chaps you screwed either way, at least with the chaps you’re not screwed at the slightest incident.
So for intensity scale you might say that without protection you could survive “0-10” with protection you could survive “0-10 and 10-70” and if the intensity of the accident is “70-100” even PPE won’t help
Then people say “well if the ppe wont protect everything I’ll use that as an excuse not to use it at all.”

    • @oneway_sting

I have known a story of a dude who had this foot chop in half due to the steel cap. at the end of the day, it's like a seat belt argument as well (it wont happen to me or if wont do much damage. I would rather have PPE, than not have it to be honest.

When you actually wear chaps the chaps have a lot more “give” than you allowed when you strapped them firmly to that log. The give allows for more of the chain stopping threads/material to get caught up to stop the saw. During the stoppage the chaps are pulled away from your leg. I have witnessed accidental gas chain saw stoppages 4 times in the same day during a wild land firefighting training class. Every time the gas saw stopped with no injury to the user and a with lot more material caught up during the stoppages than what you allowed by strapping them to the log.

Electric motors make more torque the closer they get to stalling, where a gas motor loses power at lower RPMs.

    • @blahfasel2000
      @blahfasel2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Just to clarify, actually not all electric motors have this characteristic, but the brushless DC ones in those cordless tools do. Single phase induction motors (which are used in many household appliances) for example have zero torque at zero speed, which is why they need special provisions to get started in the first place.

    • @mikeymartin4751

Great video. Demos are great to give you an idea of the power of these things, and the effects they have.
My first chainsaw arrived in the mail today, an electric one.
Usually when a new power tool arrives I'm lucky if I even look at the manual, but I've got a very healthy fear and respect for chainsaws, and I'm going to read that mofo from cover to cover and watch craploads of videos until I'm absolutely sure of everything. Then probably do some more. And then I'm going to wrap myself in safety gear before I even switch it on.
With most tools if you screw up you'll only cut yourself, albeit it could be a pretty bad gash, but with chainsaws if you screw up it can be life changing, or ending.
I don't mind acting like a scared little girl for a while, until I get used to it.

I got them in the hiVis verson as we are on the sides of roads alot. I also chose them because we are usually bucking stems over 4ft thick and large saws are required. I find chainsaw pants a much better choice on in the tree and other work. However, keeping a pair of the less inexpensive chaps is just really convenient. Thanks again.

Very interesting. In these experiments, when a gas motor is stalled, to bring it back to life you'd have to pull the starter. With the battery tool, the motor is still alive even after a stall, and it's still putting power to the sprocket as long as you hold down the "throttle".
There are similar dangers with, for example, battery v corded sawzalls. Most people would think to unplug the corded tool to change a blade, but it's easy to forget to take the battery out for a battery-powered version ... (done that myself... not hurt, but realized later the risk I ran).

Well last week my son asked if he could have some. So I went to a scrap box which had some very old Kevlar in it (about 20 years old) and to my surprise I could cut it easily with ordinary scissors something I couldn't do when it was new. I don't know if this is a known effect but it suggests old chaps may not be as safe?

He was wearing chaps and it saved his life: the saw kicked back into the inside thigh region and shredded the chaps. He walked out with only a minor scrape: we called it day after that.... I work in construction and often hear the younger guys claim that their hard hat “saved their life” one day. However, most of us old timers can’t recall ever witnessing a serious head injury despite the fact we worked
