Derek Bedford: I agree with you. I highly value Cody's suggestions and preferences but I'm starting to phase Amazon out as a source. There are many reasons but one of them is that I simply don't want to support some of the things they support. It was a hard decision to make because I like to support Cody however I can.

Definitely better than I was expecting. I personally would invest a little more money if there was a chance of needing to survive in the wild, but still for the price it was actually pretty useful. I think the best use would to keep one in everyone's pockets incase you somehow got separated from your stuff one way or another.

I was smart enough to know he was gonna blow it, since it's pretty self explanatory, he even SAYS he will give it a try which is the warning, so it's not the content creator that's not too bright but the people that didn't pull away their headphones for a bit or lowered their volume. Imagine being stranded on an island, you haven't eaten for days, about to collapse from starvation... Then you see a tin can washed up on the beach, you scurry to the can and open it with what little energy you have left. You salivate with anticipation, the thought of a delicious snack that he may have to live on, finally popping the lid off... Only to reveal it was this kit, as you lay down, dropping the can, slowly closing your eyes as you perish from lack of nourishment.

I would think that on an island, fishing hooks and line would come in handy. One thing they could add would be something to make fish actually bite...either a bit of pork rind as bait, or some kind of lure. Could still be tiny. Also, instead of that shiny sticker, a plastic mirror with a hole in the middle wouldn't cost much and would be much more useful.

The lid of the can! You forgot that! Wrap it around the candle for a windshield. Use it to cut things. Apply the signaling material to that (even if it isn't self adhesive, just take a piece of the duct tape & fold it on itself to make it double sided. You can then take the pop-top ring, with a piece of the thread & hang it on a branch, let the wind do it's job. Heck, you can take the ring & use it to hang several things off of a single mount point. You can use the lid folded and turn it into a funnel. And you can even put it back on the can to contain contents with the duct tape.

    • @gligo7586

Ughh in Asia you can buy the individual stuff (actually more) for pennies but I don’t think we can stack all those stuff in a tuna can though because It’s really hard like in SL a 50 was matches(only stem) cost a little less than 5cents. And fish hooks are cheap and a little quality. If you want safety pins you can get like a bunch of em for less than 30cents quality ones but low quality one for 10cents. Also thread is cheap if you really push you can buy thangus/nilone strings for really cheap too....

I love this review! I got one of these kits in my stocking about 12 years ago and have always tossed it in the bottom of my bag when hiking and backpacking "just in case". I've never opened it and the label has long ago worn off but the seal is still good. Nice to know what might be in there if I ever find myself in a dire situation! I'm pretty impressed by the amount of stuff they packed in there and how well thought out the choice of items appear. Nice!

That brass wire is a good idea. I have a very old staff compass with its' leather pouch. The stitching was giving out. So I sewed it up with brass wire like you received here. It makes durable, metalic stitching but is non ferrous and so harmless to the compass. If you do anything like this, it would be good to have needle nose pliars handy. The ones on the mini multi tools will probably be fine.
BTW keep the mini Leatherman or the like with you too.
I have advocated having a whistle with you, for years. There has been some real resistence to that idea. So I appreciate Cody's remarks about the whistle. My whistle and lanyard are non ferrous so it won't disturb my Silva Ranger compass.

Sharjeel A. I definitely agree with that... But I never had an issue with my YAMAHA HPH-MT8 Headphones on any of this Headphoneuserwillgetkilledsitutions. I sometimes didn't even notice them... These are passive... (But I still get these high penetrating sounds when a singer sings an "s" and the audio quality is low...)

I figured it probably was. It's just interesting that Facebook and Instagram don't consider it a privacy thing. I don't have a problem, it's just interesting that on place thinks it should be private and another doesn't.

When I was in boy scouts we actually made survival kits similar to this but hand-picked all the items to be high-quality. I'm trying to remember, it's been a very long time since then, but I believe we used some kind of metal peanut or coffee can (roughly 4in in diameter and 3-4in tall) and wrapped it with duct tape. Inside included razor blades, waterproof matches, candles, some cord and a good-quality reflective mirror among many things, the rest of which I cannot remember. Sure, the kit I assembled many years ago was much better quality and being in the scouts it was designed to be a backup to all the other gear we already had (Be Prepared, the scout motto) and this tuna can kit should be considered supplementary as well, or rather redundant. Buy a few and toss one in your glove box, take another to work and leave it in your desk, take one in your day pack on a hike, or get several and disperse them among your camping gear. Maybe during a real emergency you'll have peace of mind knowing that you have lots of little extras in case your main gear has a failure somewhere, or if you find yourself with nothing else purely by bad luck, then at least you'll have something instead of nothing.
