      Sometimes we forget that not everyone cares about video games. I will admit the intersection between consumer technology hyperawareness and unfamiliarity with video game is pretty unusual. Going to engineering school it felt like every single one of us was a big gamer.

      Late 90s early 2000s you still had people who grew up completely unplugged. I was born in 1999 and didn't get cable tv till like 2007 so I missed a bunch of nostalgic tv shows. I went to a super small school up till 5th grade with no computers. Only slide projectors and chalk boards. I went to a new school in 6th grade not even knowing how to type or what the Internet was but being required to submit essays online and make PowerPoint presentations. Thankfully kids are fast learners: I ended up getting my masters in biomedical engineering. Long story short, we do exist 😂.

      Marques Brownlee, who I think is great at what he does still, became popular in the first place because he very superficially explained technology to normal people, no techies or nerds. He's not a nerd and I believe doesn't really play video games much so it explains his podcast.
      He's no Digital Foundry, Gamer's Nexus or...3DGameman (this last one is from og youtube, he never got that much bigger than what he was in 2007).

      I don't think it's just an age thing though, it's also a personality thing. A lot of people in tech move waaay too fast, just like the tech, so they talk about months or a few years in "ancient times" terms. When I was 13 a lot of 13 year-olds thought 25-30 year-olds were "old", but I found that ridiculous being as my parents were both above 40 at the time and didn't seem old like my grandparents. Same thing those that listened to pop music versus what I liked. Songs longer than 2 minutes were "long and boring", iPods sounded great, etc.

    Analogue makes FPGA consoles, meaning its hardware recreation to a transistor level, the fpga board is programed to behave exactly like any board the programer wants in this case an N64 gaming console. The hype comes because original N64 consoles have a very poor video output, the image is very blurry, With this new Analogue console we will be able to play all Nintendo 64 games just like a normal N64 console but with all the benefits of modern technology, 4K, crisp image and sound, no lag

    Honestly a lot of Analogue's business practices are kinda scummy, they're not the best company. When the Pocket originally came out, they held pre-orders but then took over a year to ship them out, so they were just holding onto your money interest-free.
    Then they add the glow in the dark edition followed by the transparent ones a few weeks ago, but still don't have the original black and white models available. If you're someone who's wanted one, the only way to get them the last few months is either buy from a scalper online or be stupid fast and snag one of the special edition drops, it's ridiculous. Oh and I got the purple one and it barely looks purple which is a bit of a disappointment.

    • @jayjayhooksch1
      @jayjayhooksch1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "perfectly" is a stretch. Switch online emulation is ok, and some stand alone emulators I would even say are good, but far from perfect.
      FPGA will be near perfect, able to use original and modern peripherals as well as upscale. It's a big deal.

    • @jayjayhooksch1
      @jayjayhooksch1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @jonny_laguna I wouldn't say all emulation sucks, but I would agree that original consoles with upscalers are far superior experiences with FPGA really close.
      The reason I'm excited about this isn't because of the upscaling or bluetooth, I can already get that with peripherals on an original n64. It's mostly because it's new hardware and I don't have to worry about components going bad; I don't have an n64 and I don't want to invest in one just to have the capacitors crap out on me or something because the hardware is almost 30 years old and has been subjected to who knows how much abuse.

    While the Analogue 3D is amazing and all that. I am going to argue that technically N64 emulation has kinda been perfected utilizing low level (paraLLEl-RDP) emulation. Probs can't do it on the switch cause it does require a bit more power than HLE (Glide plugins).

    The price is actually very good. To mod a N64 all in costs more than the $249 price.

    You guys said the pocket can emulate games, as well as use original cartridges. But he website says "No Emulation". It is actually possible but u cant do it out of the box. U need to set it up manually by finding out how to do it online

      I own the Pocket and the process to add roms was not simple at all. I'd love to see them make a handheld to play DS and 3DS games.

    The Sega Genesis directly competed with the SNES, not the NES. By the time the Genesis came out, Nintendo was winding down the NES and developing the SNES. All of the console wars in the early to mid 90s was SNES vs Genesis. The N64 directly competed with the Playstation and Dreamcast.

    Marques is 30 years old. He was 3 years old when the N64 was released. I’m not surprised, he’s unaware of the N64.

      Still though, could've played it at a friend's house in say...2000/1? an older cousing, sibling, anything? Even if had never played it, he could've been more aware about it. I knew about the NES and played it, same with the Genesis and I wad born in 1988.

    🤦‍♂He literally said that the N64 controller was kind of terrible. I felt so bad when he said that. It was literally the first commercial video game control with an analog stick and rumble feedback (even though it was with an add on) I mean the design wasn't sexy but this along with Mario64 , Zelda, Wave Race64, Golden eye etc. ushered in what we now know as the modern 3D video game era and these games with that control are still considered to be some of the greatest of all time. Man i feel so so old.

    If you don't know that the N64 is a different generation to the Genesis then Jesus don't embarrass yourself by being on a retro gaming podcast show, that's fundamental chronology. They really betrayed their own lack of knowledge. Genesis is neither '...more NES territory' nor N64 territory. First time I've felt the need to call out anything on your channels but that was painful to watch.

    4K isn't just so the games look better. 4K allows the use of high quality screen filters. Effects like CRT filters will look very good in 4K compared to 1080.
