Should Shoes Be Flexible or Stiff?

- 87% OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCE FOOT PAIN SOMETIME IN THEIR LIFE! This shouldn’t be true
A huge misconception in footwear is shoe flexibility. A lot of people may see a stiff shoe as a good thing, and a flexible shoes as dangerous. There are even metal insoles that are put into shoes to prevent painful feet from moving. But does this solve the underlying problem of why the feet are painful in the first place, or just add another crutch?
A better approach is gradually introducing movement to painful feet at the level manageable without pain. While minimalist shoes with little cushion may be too much for some people initially, it does not mean your feet cannot get accustomed to such forces and BECOME their own cushions
Many minimalist/natural shoes actually recommend a transition period, where you build up foot strength by only wearing minimalist shoes for a small portion of your day. When new to wearing minimalist shoes, your feet are working out with every step you take. This could take weeks or even months, but at some point, your minimalist shoes will become WAY more comfortable than your old unnatural shoes. And that is when your feet become their own cushions
Daily walks on grass or other soft surfaces can also helps condition the feet fast

I wear Altra's which are minimalist, I think. But my biggest problem is having to stand on concrete all day in my job. I can sit occasionally but the nature of my work is walking and standing. Can you do a video on ways to build up our legs? I'm definitely finding that too much sugar in my diet is making my legs hurt so I'm cutting down to cut it out.
I have wide, flat feet, and have had many problems with my feet in the past. Switching to zero drop shoes have almost completely fixed any of the problems I had before. My plantar fasciitis went away, and all of the pain I had in my feet went away. I used to wear shoes with a lot of cushion but it never helped, instead they made my feet feel worse for some reason. Activities like basketball and volleyball used to come with a lot of foot pain during and after. I used to believe it was because my feet were just not built good, but I discovered it was simply because they had become weak.
Get yourself some Xero shoes. There can be an adjustment period where it isn’t comfortable, but in the end it’s very beneficial to you. Your feet get much stronger and you deal with many of the issues you get from modern shoes. It helped me a lot, especially when playing sports. Even when I wear my regular basketball and volleyball shoes my feet no longer hurt during or after because they’ve gotten so much stronger
How does walking on concrete feel? I have the same situation of wide/flat feet. My knees can’t take walking for twenty minutes in Walmart with crocs on, wonder how Xero’s would feel?
@@samwhiske4322 concrete wasn’t too bad for me but I hear a lot of people who switch to zero drop shoes struggle with it. I believe it mostly has to do with the fact that people are used to heel striking and it hurts your feet a lot if you do it on concrete with no cushioning. If you stick with it you’ll get used to walking more without heel striking but there is a period where you might struggle getting used to it
@@samwhiske4322Didn't bother me much but it's common to hear from those that recently switched over that their feet hurt while walking on concrete. Most of the problems come from heel striking that most people are used to and it can hurt if you're doing that on a hard floor. There will be an adjustment period where you switch from heel striking to using more of the midfoot but it can help a lot if you stick through with it. Keep in mind that this isn't a magical fix to any problems. If there are other issues that have to do with the bones, ligaments, cartilage, etc, this may not help. However if the problem is related to modern shoes like bad posture, weak muscles, foot deformation, etc., this can be very helpful.
Not flat footed but wide feet gang yessir😏
I use vivo's my self. Made the switch 1 year ago and It's been going great.
It depends on what your typically walking on since a stiff shoe is far better on hard surfaces (i.e. concrete, floor boards, tarmac and etc) as they are able to absorb the impact better.
This done by disturbing the force over the whole foot rather than on any individual joint.
Flexible shoes have their place but aren't the best for every environment.
If you walk or run on those kinds of surfaces and gradually increase the increments, then your feet can adapt and actually become stronger. To the point where you can walk on those floors no problem. A start would be to be barefoot more in your home, and when you can be barefoot all the time in your house, you can advance to other things. 🩵
@@ezrariehm3152 I see what your saying however I would debate the purpose for doing so.
You can strengthen your feet by training them (like any other body part) however to what ends does that serve? Barefoot shoes wear out encredably quickly while being a pain to repair and there are so many hazards for even trained bare feet as to make it silly (i.e. broken glass, sharp rocks, other people standing on them, oil, and etc).
@@Johnson_2022 The stronger the better, for balance, posture, etc. It chains throughout your body. Have you heard of Vibram souls, they last at least five years. Also, Xero shoes are very durable, and they have a 5,000 Mile warranty. In regards to going out barefoot, I would not recommend going shopping or to more public places while barefoot. Although, I do think the “hazards” while being barefoot are a little overstated. You do have to pay attention to where your stepping/landing for sure. I think barefoot is cool in your house, yard, if your walking/running around your neighborhood, and probably some not treacherous trails. But again, you do have to be mindful, so if you’re going out for a run barefoot, I would leave the distractions behind. 💪
I love the perspective you illustrate that there's a huge percentage of all our bones and joints are in our feet and ankles!
So what you're saying is if the shoe is worth it, you must work it: stretch the toe out, flip it, and reverse it?
😂
Just bought a pair, and starting some feet strengthening workouts. Thanks for the info!!
What’s the brand of shoe?
Could be XeroShoes
Facts. I'm s size 16 wide finding shoes that fit well is an issue anyway. I started barefooting and using barefoot shoes and it's been amazing. I do advise to take your time transitioning over to barefoot shoes. Stretch your feet, work them, there are plenty of good exercises out there to help your joints loosen up and strengthen your feet. If you do it right shouldn't have problems. I haven't had any foot problems since switching over.
NOT ONLY are finding shoes important but SOCKS are too! I'm only a 12 wide, but finding socks that aren't too tight is damned near impossible. I ALWAYS have to shell out more just for socks that don't cut off circulation or aren't going to hurt my toes, it's crazy!
I don't wear shoes as often as I can, if I do, they're mostly crocs or another shoe that is flexible and WIDE!! If I do have to wear shoes, they're hard to find where they're even comfortable, much less even fit my damn feet!
I really do wanna just open up a shoe store that makes shoes for each persons foot, we scan the foot, and make a shoe that works for their individual foot, save the scans/fitting so you can get shoes made at any of our local stores, and if you lose or gain weight or any other reason you can always get a new scan. To make sure your shoe always FITS YOUR FUCKING FOOT, oh and we'd sell socks too!
PS, the BEST SOCK I have found are merino wool hiking socks, they're breathable, super soft, cushioning, warm or cool, just allaround the best kind of sock!!
Nice comments beside the crocs part. They look so ugly
@@Inventor1488 I don't find them ugly, and if they're NOT deforming my feet, I don't care what they look like. Function over form every time.
Unless you have certain issues
Correct toes have helped me a lot so far.
Calcaneonavicular Bone Coalition resection on left foot via open surgery, and right foot not treated yet... Never Neglect your feet! If you injure your feet take care of it right away, do to doctors neglect and misdiagnosis my body tried to heal and did so haphazardly and its been hell! I'm in Asics stability shoes right now, but when I was legit a Ninja before getting hurt I loved shows like this flexy!
Literally saw a video by a doctor the other day where she said your shoes shouldn't twist like that...can you come to some agreement maybe???
Quick note to anyone encountering this for the first time BE CAREFUL
Unless you've been wearing these style of shoes or no shoes for many years your feet (like mine) are conditioned to shoes with much more comfort and support both around the foot snd under the sole. If you want more info rose anvil has a longer form video on barefoot shoes and the claimed benefits, suffice to say there are pros anf cons but transitioning from ordinary shoes to socks with rubber on the bottom overnight can be very dangerous for your feet.
Those are great for fields but not city streets. Our feet were designed to traverse soft ground not concrete.

Barefoot shoes made my plantar fasciitis unbearable.
Yeah, Barefoot shoes caused my Neuroma to flare up really badly. As much as I like wearing my barefoot shoes for lifting and casually, I still have to be careful.
I'm very cautious about these claims. Comparing an athletic shoe to a dress shoe isn't really fair either.
It takes months to change the shape of your feet if not years for some. Your feet are not strong enough or mobile enough because they have adapted to fit in a shoe. It’s like when you get braces put on, it hurts and your mouth gets sore, but that means it’s working.
@@simpsilencer2344 I wore them for like 7 months. At first they were great but the longer I wore them I could feel discomfort in my left foot then it turned to pain then unbearable pain
Choose a transition shoe
update??
I’m actually wearing the same Xero shoes right now as I workout with kettlebells in my garage… 😂🤣😂🤣
I certainly wish that Birkenstock would get on board with a bendable/flexible suede shoe. Because they were my first barefoot show, other than zippered back ankle moccasins.
I found out that our toes are supposed to be separated like apes and was floored. I wear spacers and comfortable shoes. Wearing stilettos and high heels was a mistake.🥴
In your own opinion, is this also applicable while playing basketball?
I think the answer here would be both yes and no. Yes you can condition your feet in high impact forces and in high velocity multi-angular movements, however it wouldn't be sustainable for long periods of time where feet would need modern shoe technology to combat fatigue and wear & tear.
It heavily depends on the context but for professional athletes who expose their feet in high impact forces and high velocity movements everyday during playing season, yeah modern cushion technology and rigidness of the shoe would help a lot to avoid injuries.
But having some days during the off season, where one would strengthen the foot and play in minimalist shoes, it would benefit the athlete by lessening the dependence on modern shoes.
Just based my answer on a physical therapy setting, where I worked with an athlete during my internship. We approached it in a holistic manner, where the said athlete would do his basketball drills in minimalist shoes or barefoot but not in long periods of time (maximum of 45 minutes) and not as intense as doing the drills with shoes, to avoid overloading the foot.
@@WillySmegmashout out to this dude writing an essay to answer a comment much love
@@tempothekid hope you guys understood it 😅. TLDR: wear minimalist shoes if you're not gonna go all out. But if you are, you should have shoes to protect your feet being exposed to maximum effort
Hell no u will break ur leg
Yes. I wore Xeros while playing basketball with no issues. The only problem is the sole itself might not be strong enough, but that depends on the brand
A shoe like this doesn’t provide me the stability i need for my ankles and feet and support for my back.
May work for some people but not for me. The less cushion and more bendy a shoe is the more my back and feet ache. Especially at work.
Im not expert at this but the pain you have is probably because you have weak feet because you have been wearing these shoes that had a lot of cushion. And alot of people don't know how to walk in hard surface beacuse they are used to walk with shoes that have alot of cushion. In the end its your choise to wear flexable shoes or stable ones. And sorry for my bad english hope you a health life. Thanks for reading❤
@@kwt__q831 bro study physics, you can't use your feet to prevent back and knee damage, unless you are making a spring by going on your tiptoes
Same here. I have no arches and need specific support for my heels. Ppl think these shoes magically work for everyone and fix all their feet problems bc it’s “natural”. The problem is some of us “naturally” have bad feet and need to rely on modern technology.
Good thing I have been a ballet dancer my whole life. So no issue moving my feet everyday. Never used stiff shoes for decades. This is so bad.
Look, I got those xero shoes and they came with one of the strap for the laces completely unattached. No way to tie the laces.
If anyone has some brands of barefoot/ no soles shoes they recommend, I’d love to know
Which model xero shoe do you recommend for mostly city walking for exercise but also maybe some light lifting?
Flexibility 👈 I had shoes but Brazilian shoes are 👌 Good ones last you up to 20 years. No joke. Absolutely
Imagine stepping on a sharp stone with those
Im glad my feet are my player two in co op games 😂
What about construction boots? Only limit I have on my feet is when I’m in season wearing boots 12+ hours a day
I wish, the shoes I buy say they want to make it out of conductive materials, but it's usually expensive and inhibits flexibility
I have size 17 feet, i cant even see my tv screen when i lay back in bed, or watch my tv when i have them on the coffee table. All i have are these damn floorboards on the end of my legs constantly blocking my view.
Size 17 ☠️☠️☠️
Woah. I wanna see 😳
I cant wear those fabric shoes, not enough support. I need a good walking shoe with a firm sole and leather upper.
Link for the ball and benefit of the knee walking exercise.
People usually make the error to buy shitty cheap shoes, you will walk a lot, buy proper shoes. If you walk on hard surfaces a lot you will mostlikely need a bit more cushion than barefoot shoes. Also just going from normal to barefoot in an instant is not a good thing. Ease in to them slowly.
I have had pain in my foot for 6 years, no idea where the pain comes from, but I can tell you bare foot shoes was not the fix 😂 they where even worse for me.
I have to wear work boots for 13 hours a day any suggestion
more in this video than those bs 26 minute ones on this topic 😂
at the same time the world we live in has very hard surfaces

And everyone thought I was crazy 25 years ago when I would test the flexibility of my shoes (I was a teenager at the time). I'm very gentle on my shoes so it takes forever to break them in, so if they're too stiff they're gonna destroy my feet.
It allows you foot to be a foot if flexable❤
My podiastry told me that soft shoes are not good for plantar fascitis.....so who you believe
Physio told me if can bend it not good for foot shoe

Any big toe spacer purchase recommendations for comfort?
I'm going to walk barefoot for life.
it allows your foot to get smashed by all the little stones, nails or whatever you want
You cannot compare leather with rubber. Even if the leather shoe is hard to walk with it is better than the rubber ones❤
whats funny is my podiatrist gave me the exact opposite advice. you need support ubder the heel and a shoe that doesnt bend hahahahah. i should preface by saying I never sore shoes before around the house and i work from home. i always worked out in bare feet and I wrecked my feet doing that.
