Shawn, my golden has an injured leg and has to take it easy for a few days. I tuned into your channel on my TV and she is absolutely glued to it, and whines when Cali is on the screen and brings her toys in to offer to Cali. It is so sweet and great fun to watch.

I had 6 Tamarack trees in my yard where I lived for over twenty years.
Every Spring, I spent hours cleaning up tons of tiny branches that had dropped over the Winter off those trees.
I would have loved for someone to built ANYTHING with those trees.
    Named my daughter Tamara!

Thank you for the video, Shawn. We enjoy your presentations very much as we are in a rural environment, not so remote as yours, but then we're in the high end of seventies and unfortunately well past the best before date..lol. I still get much of our firewood and live on an old run out farmland with wood lot in NS, garden in the summer and a lot of other DIY adventures. We've been blessed with like minded neighbours, and realize how very fortunate we have been in this regard over many years. We are on the grid but fairly efficient and haven't suffered in our numerous power outages. We have mostly LED lighting so can have light and some unnecessary electronics, cordless phones, cell phone booster and computer from a deep cycle battery and small inverter, only needing a generator for fridge, freezer and water pump once in a while. Our heat comes almost entirely from wood. I'm very glad to see people like yourself who wish the quiet of the woods and I have several friends who are doing something like what you are doing in our area. All the best in your many endeavours.

Good morning Sir. I’ve been watching you channel for a very long time now almost the beginning, I don’t comment much, but always hit the thumbs up. I love the fact that you now have a band saw mill. Chainsaw milling is tougher on the body. You mentioned you wanted to static mount the saw. One nice thing about the trailer package is that you can compensate for the shifting ground season to season, be able to keep it flat. Maybe screw the feet to huge bunks and still be able to adjust with the jacks. A sawmill shed would be completely awesome. Sir thank you for all you do and share. You have inspired me to move from the city to the mountains after my retirement. I to am living my dream. God bless y’all

From a Carpenters perspective, Im so tired of inflated lumber prices, clients dont understand why I have raised my prices,.also getting tired of repetition builds such as furniture, cabinets, tables etc. I want to start building things for myself and my own benefit instead of trying to please others to earn an income. You S.J. have it figured out, you are living a great life on your terms. You are truly free. Good on you.

I dont agree with you fully that prices are inflated. Its always a supply and demand situation and right now US demand is higher than Canadian and domestic supply, which drives prices becuase NA needs to import much more from Europe. that drives price not only i NA but all over the world. Its the same story in Europe where decking prices have risen almost 100% since last summer, construction timber the same thing.
also stock are at record low levels both in china and in north africa, north africa in particular is a big buyer of european pine (pinus radiata).
I will however agree that current levels are not long term healthy for anyone although sawmills are cutting gold at the moment, the big benefit of this price rally long term for me is that wood will not go as low again (i dont think) and find more of its true value. where I live decking used to be 1 USD/meter, thats just an insult to everyone involved producing timber.

@@therealronswanson Other factors , Ravaging fires in the US, Oregon alone lost 15 billion Bd/Ft of Timber, enough to build 1 million homes , then there is the the mountain pine beetle, devastating Canadas and the U.S. Boreal forests, and lastly mandatory closures of saw mills due to Covid , at least in Alberta and B.C. Being CDN , Not sure if any mills shut down in the U.S. Of coarse they will be a shortage of softwood lumber. The reason for the huge demand for soft lumber, at least here in Canada , is interest rates are so low, people believe this is a perfect time to build a new house./ renovate. Makes no sense to me because they may have the illusion of a lower mortgage payment, but they over paid for the construction of their house. Softwood lumber isn't the only building material thats increased in cost. Where I live there is a 6 week wait for insulation. Thats lunacy. And I can pretty much guarantee the price will be higher when it does arrive.
The point of my comment is how fortunate S.J. is to be Self Sufficient for the most part. Im sure he still feels the sting of some construction materials he cannot produce himself , regardless , he is way ahead of the game and living on his terms.

    • @therealronswanson
      @therealronswanson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@darrellcaruk8880 Yes I Agree, Canadian export is down almost 25% and thats a structural decrease due to pine beetle mainly, I dont see that it will recover to previous levels in a forseeable future. we also have problems with spruce bark beetle in Europe. Mainly central but also northern Europe. Our "saving grace" if you will is that the US market accept blue stain on construction timber which european market does not. Blue stain on sideboards is ok in some cases but never on center cut. about 120 million m3 in central europe is damaged and in the future there will be essetially no spruce planted in central europe, so its bad here too.
I think as you say, other materials will "run out" before timber does, especially in Europe, we have lost about 70% of imports of plywood and OSB which instead is shipped to US that pays alot better.
my background in this is industrial sales and sales to builders merchants mainly, from one of the biggest private forest owners in northern Europe. we cut about 1,5 million m3 yearly from 5 mills.

OOoohh the memories. I was raised with four rooms and a path!! Remember moving it every couple years to a new hole. We got a new one and converted the old one to a smoke house. Worked out very well. I think the sawmill was a fantastic investment!! And the log trailer for the four wheeler is a super smart buy. I think the scent of that fresh milled wood would be the greatest thing to enjoy while sitting there solving the problems of the world and enjoying the personal relief! Sure would be nice to get some fresh sawn pine or cedar to just stack in my current throne room for atmosphere!! Even a bucket of sawdust would add to the ambience... Nothing more satisfying than building the outhouse!! Thanks for letting me wish... And bringing up some long lost wonderful memories of the house away from the house. Yep, they really were "The good ole days" !

In northern Minnesota, we refer to larch as Tamarac. Or would it be more accurate to refer Tamarac as Larch. Anyway, in my experience, I also am told there is both black and yellow tamarack, the yellow growing taller than the black. Both, of course have yellowish needles in the fall and are deciduous. I recently cut a small patch of Tamarac , which reached as long as 75’ to 80’. Here, Tamarac is a low or transitional ground species which usually is accessed only during the winter months on frozen ground. Unfortunately, we have certain natural diseases and bugs which have caused some stands to start dying off. The good news is, dead Tamarac makes great firewood....especially in outdoor wood boilers.

I have watched a LOT of sawmill videos and one hint I have gleaned from them is that if you raise the smaller diameter end of the log with wedges to level it, you will have less waste and can get more usable lumber out of each log. You'll notice that your very first cut had a sizeable amount of waste on the butt end. Leveling the log more can minimize that.

Hi Shawn there is certainly plenty of timber in just that one log.
When i first retired and moved to the small town i live in now. I bough a five hectar bloke on which were two huge Jarrah trees ( an Australian hardwood) .
I hired a lewis saw mill to cut these up both logs when cut in half measured twenty foot in length and when laying on their side were well over five foot tall, it took two day starting at seven in the morning and working till dusk, but eight by eight inch we got 18, 48 two inch eight inch planks just over a hundred two inch by four inch all twenty foot long.
The saw was a cicular saw that cut in the horizontal or vertical, the motor and blade running on rails above the logs, but because of the hieght, the owns had to make up four special stands like jacking stands to lift the rails above the tops of the logs.
It was very good but we ended up with a fivevfoot pile of saw dust, so i think the Norwood you are using works out a lot more easy if you are working alone , because there were four of us, two working the saw and two moving the timber, i recall that when moving the trees to fairly flat ground from off a hill side the mobile crane driver said that one tree cut in two was near forteen tons of wood, so moving the timber as it was cut was real hard work but the value was amazing, and by just selling nine of the eight inch by eight inch covered the cost of the hire and labour.
I would say that if you were to do as you were talking about, cutting timber for others, the saw would pag for itself three times over, it really is a nice setup.

    Hi Shaun,
Here’s some unsolicited advice.🤓 before starting your cut, shim up the log on the smaller end and your saw will be following the grain a bit more instead of feathering the grain. Definitely not a deal breaker, just a hint. I use wedges from both sides or if the log is light enough I place a board or two as shims under the small end.
I truly enjoy your “workings”. Thank you

A building for your sawmill would be a worthwhile addition, maybe with enough room for your snow machine and your side by side to keep them from the weather. And we get to watch you build another building!
When I watched you mill some logs on your last video, I thought you could cut up the pieces that you trimmed off the outside of the log for firewood. I never thought about using those pieces for siding for your buildings, either way there’s basically no waste so good job with that!
Getting the most out of everything is what you seem to do well. Keep em coming!

Your tamarack, Larix laricinia, reaches its southern terminus in Cranesville Swamp, Preston County, West Virginia, the county next to mine in Monongalia County just below the Mason-Dixon Line. This species is part of the relict vegetation left over from the Pleistocene Glaciation which stopped ca. 125 miles north. While I am in zone 6, Preston and Tucker Counties are zone 5 and have relict bogs and glades with northern species not found very much south. Just a note from your friendly neighborhood botanist.

The wood grain is so beautiful. It seems sad to use it on an outhouse, but the reasoning is sound.

Buying a mill is a big investment. However in today’s market if you have your own availability of trees then it makes sense. I will enjoy your forth coming construction videos.

Your music has the "Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" sound to it. Love it! ha I expect any minute during the video for Gordon Lightfoot to start singing! Amazing video's you create and produce, Shawn! I have been waiting with anticipation for your next video to come out and now I have my fix! If I was with you at your property I would play fetch with Cali so you could concentrate on your work. She is an amazing dog!

I ordered the same mill 2 weeks ago. Looks like I got most of the same accessories. Except I will have to assemble it myself. Watching you make lumber is getting me excited to make my own.
All the best with your new homestead project this year, Shawn.

Shawn, I do not know about using water while cutting wood, however I did hear it is used to keep the blade cool. So makes sense that if you are cutting thicker stock it may need more water. If the water flow is adjustable, that is likely why. You may be able to make the blades live longer by increasing the water flow cutting thicker stock. Just an idea...

You could probably purchase several of those milling machines for what you'll be saving in lumber costs during the cabin build. It's nice to see a Wisconsin connection in the form of that Kohler engine.

    • @tomlorenzen4062

Tracy, the engines are just ok, but the golf courses in your neck of the woods are nothing shy of outstanding! And brutal.

I envy you Shawn. With that dog of yours. What great company she is. Was sat watching her as she's sat next to you milling the logs. Wondering what's going on in that mind of hers.
Think you having the saw is good. It allows you to use the lands resources responsibly. Taking dead trees for instance. Without needing third party milling. We know you're increasing the lands diversity as you'll be planting new trees too.
All good. Glad you and Cali are taking care of each other.

I didn't realize how absorbed I was in the lumber-making until the video was ending. It all seemed so sudden. The tree was a beautiful Larch. Such stunning wood. You should make a "Shawn James Hand-crafted" Quonset hut. Instead of galvanized steel make it 1/3 debarked logs with a 3/4 clear corrugated roof. Leave the front and back open. Just to park all of your equipment.

In Prince Edward Island ( a province in Canada), when the indoor toilet made its way into people's homes, the Islanders couldn't believe that people were going to the toilet indoors, "they are doing what - indoors?" It would take a little getting use to wouldn't it?

I learned something new today. I didn't realize Larch is also called Tamarack. Here on my property in Vermont, I'd say 25% of the trees on my 20 acres are Tamarack and with their rot resistant properties, would make pretty good building lumber. I too am in the market for a saw mill and Norwood being one of three manufactures I'm considering, Thanks for another great video and always tuned in for more. Cheers!

When milling a log that is say 14 inches at one end and ten at the other why not raise the ten inch end by two inches and that way after the first cut and u turn it over the second cut will be the same & u should maximize the size of the timbers u cut

    • @garywilser7802
      @garywilser7802 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5
