Yes he is! And when he grew older the elegance and fineness of his mind, soul and music-making didn't grow lesser... Unbeatable King of Violinists, Greatest of the Greats of all times.
I LOVE LOVE this setting. I wish our performances today would return to this setting where piano is further and violin or any other instrument is up front so that it highlights both equally ❤️❤️❤️
kundalini76 I think it's often refreshing to hear things played in different pitches. Except for when it's done in a key that doesn't really suit the piece. :P
Truly - an amazing footage. Probably one of a handful recordings of young Oistrakh. What a talent! Thank you for uploading the video. I can only imagine what his life would have been had he, at some point in his career, left USSR. Any country on earth would have loved to have him.
At the time when the recording was made - he probably didn't, but perhaps later in life he could have. My point was not about leaving the country he was born in, and forgetting everything that had made him what he's become. It was more about becoming a citizen of the world, so more people around the planet could hear him perform. Many of the modern classical musicians have done just that.
Not many classical musician of Oistrakh caliber born in 1908 in USSR we able to "leave" USSR after 1930s... Especially Oistrakh. Unless of course you didn't really care about your family. Stalin wasn't really known to be a nice and forgiving guy. His successors were a little bit more cool but hardly so. :)

@RizaShiro It is possible that the recording is a bit too fast and the tone is a bit thin and high. Apart from that your comments are ignorant. It is not a song and all the breaks written in the music are there. It is a lovely restrained but very musical performance.
YES , When David Oistrach is performing it , it is truly a LIEBESleid ! His playing ALWAYS is so convincing . He is " INTO what he is doing "With ALL of him !! " Beautyful tune and phrasing , as ALWAYS !
Lied is certainly not used to describe a piece of music. As you correctly stated it means song and in English is used to denote art songs such as those by Schubert and others. You are right that this piece has songlike qualities but that doesn't make it a song. Even less the companion piece, Liebsefreud, ("Love's Joy"). No German (or Austrian) would refer to this piece as a Lied.
@cleopatra 11 Wonderful! Is there no way to know what year this performance was recorded? Also, do we know why the pianist is hidden in the shadows -- apparently to obscure his/ her identity; but why? Also, I must assume that in calling him "Oistry," you mean it only in an endearing and affectionate sense, with no disrespect intended. But it is far from obvious that everyone would see it that way.
if it was in american Id say it was very old . the pix and sound quality looks like something from the 30's or 40's. but other countries had poor sound and video quality even in the 60's.
@@hifijohn But if this is a "Young Ostriakh" we can assume that means 20s maybe 30s, and if he was born 1908 that would place this recording at essentially the birth of film with sound, so the late 1920s or early 1930s
@@monelleny it's not? It's just a way of showing their love/adoration towards Oistrakh, if anything (although it sounds cheesy), and it's fitting here since this is a recording made when he was a youngster.
@RizaShiro 1. it is recorded with inferior technology, the sound is distorted (even so, the intervals between the pitches are perfectly in tune -- if a piece is played from D or E, the perceived outcome is virtually identical to the brain -- of course strictly thinking of melody and ignoring different timbres between strings) 2. he made excellent pauses... i'm looking at the music right in front of me... what bar(s) do you take these "silences" at?
@@alfredohess6505 And if he's still there after ten years, he can check the fact that this is an excerpt from the movie "Концерт-вальс" from Mosfilm, year 1940.

Very, very beautiful. One of the very best versions of this.
One of the world's greatest violinists, David Oistrakh, with his rendition of Austrian composer, Fritz Kreisler's, Liebesleid.
Such a heart-meltingly played lovely music - In my opinion the unbeatable King of Violinists, Greatest of the Greats of all times.
My uncle used to play Oistrakh for me, when I was a young boy playing the violin. What virtuosity.
OUCH it's a semitone up in pitch! (original tape machine running slow)

noticed that too! still sounds amazing though
If its up in in pitch then it means tape is playing to fast.
You can easily change it yourself if you want.

Straightforward Viennese waltz played sweetly without a bunch of "interpretation". One of my favorite videos.

It's not a Viennese Waltz, it's a Ländler.

True. On a side note, the best performance of Beethoven's "Kreutzer" that I've listened to is also by Oistrakh (and Oborin on the piano).
2019 anyone?
yeah, because this is king David :D
No one! Unfortunately, all busy with impressive faces and presentation.....They don't even come close.....
Checking-in for 2021 because Oistrakh is timeless!

2023 and still listening to this masterpiece❤️
They did the pianist dirty
great
@Frank Pam ***** The tittle is LiebesLEID (sorrow) not lied (song), so there's no controversy
It is common for some players to play Romantic pieces at 442-444 Hz, much like how it is appropriate to play a Baroque piece at 438-436 Hz.
Thanks
That's why I love Soviets.

Sorry about the typo: Liebesfreud.
