    Really in-depth review Ali!
    What I best liked about your review is the way you dismantled the whole Smart Hub to find whether there's a "microphone" or not.
    Dimitri from Hardware Canucks was wrong when he reviewed the H700i - he said there was no "microphone" in there and the acoustics were measured in tandem with the FAN RPM.
    I'm now gonna tweet this to him. Kudos! ☺

    First of all, nice for opening the device and checking for a mic. On the other hand, you missed a couple things. First, you plugged the CPU fan into the CPU Fan header on the motherboard, which you should not do for this device. The idea is to plug every fan on the smart device (that's why they have 3 splitters for 3 fans each), and then deactivate on the BIOS the warning for not having a CPU fan. So, if you do that, and you plug, lets say, the three front row fans to one splitter, The CPU fan to the next one, and the exhaust fan on the back on the other channel, you'll have 3 things that the smart device can control, plus the fans on the GPU, and then you give it much more room to work. I'm not saying that this will make a huge difference, but that's the way it's intended to work. If you plug the CPU fan, to the CPU fan header, you are removing the most important fan from the smart device ecuation. Anyway, love your videos, and keep up the great work!

      Hey I connected the two front fans to the 3 extra splitters but I can’t control them at all it doesn’t detect them. Why? They are cooler master sickle flow 120 with blue LED’s which do turn on. Also is it even recommended to connect the CPU fan to part of that splitter? Never mind that I’m just more concerned about the 2 front fans that work basically 24/7 and don’t turn off or slow down and they are very brand new

    For the time being the HUB is still very useful to have cam running and monitoring the system, the adaptive is not really necessary as every fan curve including case extraction and induction, cpu and pump of your water cooling (if you use a kraken) can be programmed within cam easily using predefined setups or your own, without going in the often unfriendly tools in bios. I just created custom profiles for every set of fans and my non-overclocked system (why would I..)is fully silent even at load (8700k GTX1080ti Kraken). The case engineering is among the best I have ever dealt with and looks amazing, monolithic and minimalistic. There are a few negatives but not really deal breakers; 1) if you dont pay a lot of attention when removing the glass it will end up on the ground in pieces as there is no catch system when you unscrew it. 2) if you use kraken and h700 you will need to use an internal hub or add the wires from 2 usb headers to one as otherwise you wont be able to use the front panel usb as most mobos have two USB 2 headers. 3) sometimes cam fails to recognize all the active devices and needs you to scan for them again. 4) if you own a suction-cup based headset hook you can throw it in the bin, the surface is porous and you will need a magnetic one.

    Really good analysis of the smart functions. Agree in forgetting about adapting for sound. It almost seems like it is trying to compensate for it's own fans not being particularly quiet?
    The argument is there is no standard noise level for fans so is not a set variable but having quieter fans to begin with would probably be a better investment than this software solution.

  • @nezucors5715

    I like how nobody mentioned aside from the gimmicks of the auto adjusting fan curves, that it also acts as hue for any fans or led strips also connected to it. Just like hue+ is an add on, at least it comes standard with this case as well as the auto fan/noise adjustments as a shitty bonus

    i have always had the best results from using speedfan. sure, you have to manually set your temps and fan speeds in a curve but the end result is always really good IF your cooling system can keep up. i do wish there was some kind of adaptive learning but i must say that this type of hardware probably works much better in a full water cooled setup as the front fans probably do not change the cpu/gpu temp much if at all, which would explain the lack of fan speed variance. i wouldnt write it off just yet, but i also agree about getting rid of the sound measurement..

  • @boomgr2250
    @boomgr2250 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    personaly I had problems with my aio cooler because cam thinks that even with 0 rpm on the fans the temp is the same.so when I have their adaptive profile fans doesn't even spin.The support told me tha they had on their home one and they used the presets.that was their answer to my problem all I have to say is that their marketing team did a rly good job with those cases and the smart devices.But the reality is diferent a big hole on their software department for cam problems and their smart device

  • @BeerBellyDK
    @BeerBellyDK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well if it only looks for a certain pre-defined sound signature, such as maybe the sound of air rushing by, maybe it could work. But even still, placement of fans could impact that. I'd say it would probably be a lot more reliable just adjusting sound based on available temperatures during a certain load, maybe defined by percentage on both cpu and gpu, in relation to fan RPM.
    It's likely just a marketing gimmick to ship more cases. Putting words like "machine learning" AI controlled" "Intelligent" etc etc probably sounds interesting to the general public.

    If anything, this product should somehow be able to control clock speed and cpu voltage as well. If this was possible, then you could set a ceiling for one of the settings, and optimize the other settings around it... For example, setting a certain noise ceiling, and having it optimize clock speed, fan speed, cpu temp, cpu voltage, etc.
    Edit: why does this have to be a device, and not just a software download? (mic aside)

    Another good review and high quality video, thumbs up! This case is basically larger version of s340 elite and looks just as stunning, but for the price you have to pay... not worth it, smart device should be sold as separate unit and case should be like $100-120, smart device seems to be a very niche questionable gimmick at best

    • @djmandrick
      @djmandrick 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree from a consumer's perspective that'd be great but they are a business and not including it makes no business sense for them. Its about selling every unit for the highest possible profit margin. Including the smart controller adds value to the marketing of it now being different from their competitors - now being a "smart case" - that in itself has a monetary value attached to it which they can push to ultimately sell more volume. Probable cost is no more that a couple of $s to manufacture the fan controller in the qtys they do, when included (by default) means they can charge £35 quid more. £35 quid more to them per unit sold will always win for an investment of a couple of dollars per unit and nullifies the risk of having a warehouse full of unsold/unwanted fan controllers (which storing them costs more money) especially when it has been proved from multiple tests/sources there is little to no benefit of a consumer actually using. I know you are saying scrap it and do a 700 non-i version but others have said it should be an optional purcahse. That's why the optional part won't happen either.

    sorry im dumb, but i bought the h400i and out the back all the splitters come out. do i not need to connect the fans to the motherboard at all? do i remove some splitters to remove the mess? does the smart device act as a power source for the fans? im just confused because all the videos i watch say i need to plug the fans into the fan headers on the motherboard. and there is heaps of splitters coming out the back of the case. do i just remove some of them? do the fans come already installed? do i have to just plug in the power for the smart device and thats it? sorry really confused im a new builder

    This case tempered glass explodes when the system grows hot and someone just touch it as per some consumers' reviews.
    NZXT needs to install a proper heat and bullet proof glass or metallic glass. It can help the glass from shattering even if the consumer hammer the glass or even punch👊🏽 the glass during heated gaming rage sessions.
    Why going for cheap glass?🤦‍♂
    Go with some good quality thick glass of at least proper shock and heat resistance.
    By the way what is the thickness of NZXT's tempered glasses in H series line up of products?
    I'm totally disappointed.
    I mean, Glasses are exploding!!!!!!!!!!💥

    Own a H200i and can say that this "adaptive" fan control is just garbage. Just make your own curves and you're fine from there. I bought one just for the use of a RGB and fan hub, as I ended up with three controls for rgb (Aura sync, NZXT and Logitech) and its not a problem for me and fan connectors on an ITX board is always scarce so having that feature also helps but you could always just use a splitter from the motherboard.
    imo the H200i is rather nice if you're wanting a case with aesthetics and function in mind, if not aesthetics (RGB/tempered glass), a Nano S from Fractal (or pray they make an ITX meshify) will suit nicely if you're after that same volume.

    Actually i'm pretty sure it's a backpropagation neural network used here. The time 20 min for each steap it's because you use termal data and you need at least 1 min beetween each point. Actually the variables you are speaking of here, the "lots of them", Neural network doesn't care about that. With enough data/try, it will define this parameters but you will need to test all year. You are not convice about Neural Network, you should read more on it ! (You can launch rocket into space without tell the computer Gravitation law)

    I've seen comments everywhere - including people here - saying the smart fan controller should be an optional extra you could buy. That'll never happen - it is included because a plastic box with a PCB and microphone (manufacturing cost en mass would be a couple of dollars at most) which means including it by default, they can bump the price of the case *way* higher than the cost to make it and also gain a USP that is it a "smart" case. If it was an optional extra the base price of hte case would have ot be lower to complete. And who would actually buy it though and for how much? They know they can ship one per case which keeps manufacturing costs even lower. No left over stock no-=one wants in a production run. Various sources show it has little to no benefit. They will never sell it individually as the margin of proflt they can add for it included outweighs the loss they could sell it for without (maybe $30-40 less at $160 to be competitive). So a $38 markup on every unit (if these values weren't just made up for the sake of argument). This isn't the first video I've seen (although it was the best, taking it all to bits and explaining it) that says you are better just to do it yourself. Anyone suggesting this - you have to look at this from a business/profit perspective not a consumer's best interest point of view.

    • @djmandrick
      @djmandrick 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's how financing, planning and bringing a new product to market and making it profitable for your company and your shareholders works. They don't make products with the consumer's satisfaction as the number one priority although as a consumer of course that would be best. Cost and profit margins is always the main focus in everything - budgets, time scales, production costs, R&D sampling. They tailor a product TO the consumer to provide the best product at that set price point they are selling at whilst making a set percentage of profit based on the bill of materials but in a way to make the most money in the process. If you think anything else you know nothing about corporate finance, product design and development or have never worked anywhere that has ever designed and made anything that has then been sold. That profit then gets reinvested into future projects and allows corporate growth. If you ran a company to please the customer first and give them the best deal at the expense of your own profit margins you'd stunt your own growth and if you didn't change it ultimately lose sales, your share prices would drop, you'd run at a loss, meaning ultimately you'd go out of business. Your comment has little to no validity.

      LOL, mate, just stop, you are surely on some ritalin or too much cofee, i know every lit bit about it, cut the enourmous texts, i have worked as a programmer, product designer and many other things when my cousins and i was almost a one man band on our "enterprise".
      The thing is, doing things without a clear purpose is throwing money on the trash!
      The main focus is not cost and profit margins, those who do it are faded to end soon, they can't differentiate itself from the rest and will not stay in their hearts.
      That way of thinking is why so many can't do profit anyway, does not understand the consumer.
      Consumer is always first and if viable the product will be made.
      Edit: for some reason this text entered when i received your other message.
      The point i see is if you treat everything as business, even more youtube content which is quite on the personal level, it will not be relevant other than the rest...

    what port in the mobo do you use to plug the smart hub into? I used a usb 2.0 male that was available at the bottom but my LED Strips ain't turning ON (even if the NZXT CAM app is detecting them)

    But imagine If you have 2diferent fans that have the same efect in temperature but one have doble the noise with noise Control you can see that and slower or even stop the fan with more noise

    • @optimumtech
      @optimumtech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Romeu Capela sa - definitely, but I think 'double the noise' is a bit of a stretch, unless you are using the worst fans available - unlikely in such an expensive case 😅

    With that smart device, NZXT just try to sell their coolers, fans, case, etc, since those smart device only work well with NZXT product. So, its smart idea, but not smart execution.

    So can the smart device act like a different version of the nzxt hue+. I was going to get the h500i and I know with the hue+ you can daisy chain nzxt rgb fans for like a chained lighting effect, but I am wondering if the same thing can be done here so you can use 1 or 2 fan slots out of the 3 on the smart device.

    The CAM software is totally crap. Don't even have individual fan speed control, use 10x CPU than speed fan, ugly, sometimes won't apply settings when PC starts. Avoid at all cost!

    I think the problem in your review, is that you are being too simplistic, how many days are you running this one?
    Do you have any response from NZXT? Are you sure that you covered the entire spectrum of functionalities, what if the point of it is to stay just above the normal levels of your room, since you have your air conditioner turned on all time, it maybe thinks that's the base volume to start with...
    Just as an example, i think there's more to it than you tried to show in your review.

    • @optimumtech
      @optimumtech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcelo Tezza - The objective was to review the setup process step-by-step provided in the CAM Software in real-world conditions. I have no contacts @ NZXT.

    • @MarceloTezza
      @MarceloTezza 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not about contracts, if i was trying to do an in depth review of something i would call the manufacturer to know as much as possible about the product to get a better grasp of the functionalities, as i saw in your video you know something about programing. You started with baseline of what the item should do based on what's your vision about it and should be based on functions, but maybe the parameters used are far more complex than you are gauging, i think your conclusion felt superficial since you didn't explored the algorithm in depth.
      Anyway, i don't want to sound a hater, i generally think your methodology is good enough for most reviews, but i digress on this one, it will be hard for the majority since it's kind of a new concept. BTW, i don't have any relations to NZXT, what's so ever, just judging based on my own observations.

    • @djmandrick
      @djmandrick 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A manufacturer will not give you the internal workings on how/why their product is designed or functions of it outside what you know by taking it to bits. They only provide a high level description. The coding for it especially for any algorithms used will not be discussed with them, if you did contact them. The only bit they want the consumer to know (because that's the only bit that is relevant) is the final outcome not the workings of how it got to those results. The source code will be heavily protected to stop competitors stealing it and using the same methodology which they have had to pay for to R&D it. Even employees outside direct development of the software at NZXT won't have access to the code or under the hood algorithms or any idea what to tell him if they even did want to divulge any such information. He did a best guess (which is more than I've ever seen anyone else do for this product) which is the absolute best he could do and as a software tester working in a development environment (where I've never had access to the source code on anything I've worked on from financial software to high security - government level - identity management software) I'd suggest his method is definitely a good enough stab at how it works. This was an excellent video IMO.

    • @MarceloTezza
      @MarceloTezza 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure why this immense text, but sure , they will not give you the code, but they can give you some indications of some of the choices they've made and why the results are what they are in this specific methodology.
      I think they probably want this be something more than nothingbox, so if the actual info is not sufficient to make the product look atractive they can give you some tips, still i could be wrong and the product be really a big nothing.
      The video production here is of high value, no doubt, but i would surely take this testing for at least about a week, and under different sound pressure conditions to see if it auto regulates itself, how much time it takes to "learn" your enviroment and adapt to it etc...
      Certainly more effort could have been put on it, unless the AI story is just BS.

    • @djmandrick
      @djmandrick 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To give relevant background in my experience of why this test was good. Rather than just saying "you're wrong" your point was crafted so I felt it deserved a constructed counter argument. You'd still hit a brick wall with it and they'd tell you nothing. It's probably patented making it even less likely. They also wouldn't want to officially confirm in any capacity the conclusion that the box (at this stage at least) does very little.
