Agreed. With the Quest you can limit your horizontal and vertical fov to give more performance headroom. But I never touch the horizontal fov. As a matter of fact I would easily sacrifice performance for increased horizontal fov

I'm convinced people seem to experience VR differently from each other. I have a full sim pit with triple 32s and I also have the quest 3. My quest 3 sits in the box and collects dust. I take my triples any day over VR. People seem so blown away by VR and for me it's just meh.... When I dust the head set off and drive some laps it feels like such a downgrade over triples. yeah probably because if you have a good rig you're basically controlling it the same way you would a real car and there's no vr jank to it. I've seen stuff that actually moves you around to simulate g force I bet that would be crazy in vr
Vr is actually better in almost everything. Actually being able to naturally operate a gun in 3D space is also way better than clicking with your mouse on targets
I've tried racing without VR after doing so for 7 years. I can't do it. My first buy was an Oculus Rift S. It was great as a starter headset. I have a Varjo Aero now. The clarity is awesome. I'm happy with it for the time being.

It's not my full time job but I work in VR more than my 40 hour a week real job. Keep the VR content coming!
Videos like this give me so much hope for VR as a medium. As a long-time experienced VR user, I obviously want to see the technology boom and see mass adoption of it. I see so many people shitting all over VR headsets and VR games in general without ever trying it, and it really does suck because all it does is push the narrative that VR is just some gimmick or that it's not worth it. But sometimes I see stuff like this, where someone who's relatively new or completely new to VR gets into it and suddenly sees the same magic that I did when I got into it. It's something special and unfortunately for those who can't or won't give it a shot, it's not really something that can be accurately described, only experienced.
@user-qu7qh7qj2t Thought the same, recently there haven't been many good releases in VR, one exception that popped into my mind was Into The Radius 2 but it ain't no Half life alyx.
I started playing GT7 in PSVR2 and I can't go back. I have decades of gran turismo experience and I'm racing better than ever, the depth perception is great. Can't imagine what these crystal googles are like.
130 fov that they state is diagonal, and usually when people talking about vr fov its horizontal which they state is 115, and actually from reviews its closer to 105 (depending on your eyes/head shape)
This. For the Crystal (Light), Pimax has been outright lying about the FOV since it's announcement. You can even check the software, and the device specifically renders an image with about 105° of FOV. It is literally impossible to see more for anybody, regardless of their face shape
@@blenderalien That's how the crystal is too, I find the horizontal fov to be a bit less than the index's. That being said it definitely has a larger vertical fov maybe by about 5°. But i was definitely disappointed when I git it because the marketing made it sound much bigger, especially because they kept quoting the wide fov lenses for the fov specs. Which have never released in over a year and maybe a half.
@@Mavgaming_1 maybe it's your face shape. Many people can see 116 wide and about 115 vertical on the index, which does render that much FOV. It looks WAY wider than the crystal did for me

Bro I’ve been watching you for some 5 something years not only have you come a long way currently there is no tech channel that can compete or offer a better review on something than you. You are one of those channels that made youtube what it is
5 years is pretty short in terms of TH-cam history, lots of big consistent channels have been doing their thing for more than 12 years, tech or otherwise. His vids are pretty good though.
OK, you've talked about how comfortable the headsets are to wear, but how are your eyes? Do they get tired or sore after prolonged use (1+ hour.) I'm old enough to remember how CRTs ruined eyes and moving to LCD screens was a massive improvement, but I'm not convinced having the screen a couple of centimetres from your eyes is a good thing...
Strange about the bad tracking. I have had no problems with tracking on my Crystal Light since I got it a month ago. Use it for both simracing, flying and other games and also with motion. Zero issues. Coming from a Reverb G2 that lost tracking occationally when using motion.
I had a realization using VR goggles for the first time; the environment was the inside of an enormous, impressive church. But after a minute I noticed that I was only impressed with the technology - the actual experience of being in a huge amazing church was almost meaningless. I've been in some beautiful churches, including st paul's basilica. I'm not christian, but I've always been awed by the interiors of churches. I think the source of this awe is the fact that a real church dominates me. Real churches are made from millions of kilograms of stone; if a church shattered and fell on me, I would die. A VR church does not dominate me. I think some of the most literally awesome environments a human can experience are ones which dominate us - and our brains know that VR environments have no dominance over us. VR certainly seems superior to screens. I am only stating what I feel I've realized is a significant distinction between VR and reality.
Have not tried VR yet. Is it like 3d in cinema, I mean in a way that you get used to it and then forget about it at which point it doesnt "dominate" you to use your term. Also have you maybe thought that if you went to that church every day it would stop impressing you also? Thats hpw humans wprk we accustom to things so they dont detract from daily life.
I find VR is best for unrealistic settings. I'll never go to space, so seeing the stars or flying in ships is impressive. Fighting a dragon, or seeing bright and colourful landscapes that can only exist in fantasy are fascinating. Real life stuff is neat, but it can't compare to actually going there in person.
You could easily get 120 fps if you weren’t driving the monitor and headset. Obviously you had the monitor so we could see but when you’re just gaming for fun it’s something to consider
You need to try the quest3 connected wirelessly to a WiFi 6E router. I have the Light and BSB and prefer the Q3 on 6E. Better FOV, smooth as silk at 120 frames on virtual desktop and lenses are better. Pimax is clearer but I think the Q3 form factor and no cord makes it superior.
I used to own a Vr headset. The games were more than amazing, the most immersion i have ever had in a game.. I returned the VR headset.. Something about the experience felt dystopian, and i didnt want that amount of immersion. Scary stuff
I'm holding out for the Pimax Crystal Super - 3840x3840 res per eye, OLED, eye tracking and pancake lenses (which are significantly bigger than the light). Going to be utterly insane for VR and especially sims.
Be careful, pimax is historically known for overpromising and underdelivering. They’re akin to an interviewee having a great resume “on paper” but being a disappointment when they actually show up.
My crystal light was DOA with bad lenses along with many many others. all these youtubers overhype the hello outa the pcl Me and 3 other friends all had defective lenses and replacements did not fix a thing. They purposely send TH-camrs hand picked sets free of issues but the regular consumer gets the bottom end unless you are lucky. 3 headsets, 5 different lens sets amongst us. Still terrible. Stay away from pimax.
@Slavolko nothing resolved the issue. They have bad Quality control. They even made a statement saying the improved QC by 90% yet plenty of people are getting defective units. Scroll the the pimax forum and about 80% of post are people complaining about barrel distortion or lenses issues. I returned my headset and ordered the new focus vision. Along with the somnium vr1 I have a headset problem lol Quest 3 Quest pro Index Big screen beyond Pimax Quest 3/Index are still my dailys
They just need to make a helmet. Put the huge high quality lens/screen in that. Lots of people race in race suit, gloves, five point harness etc. just make a helmet.
Pimax is about to release their pimax super with a resolution of 3840x3840. With a ppd (pixel per degree) of 57 which means that that you can almost not see any pixels any more (humans have a ppd of around 60)
What TH-cam videos do you recommend to reach your level of cinematography? Your shot list, lighting, composition, color grading, etc., are so top tier, it’s crazy!
It looks great, but it's incredible how quest 3 remains at the top, especially for its price, meta nailed it, very affordable for everything it delivers, and it tends to get better and cheaper faster and faster.
Not to mention Pimax has a lot of bad reviews. Their headsets seam to be hit or miss on weather you get one with a ton of issues or not. Considering how many issues I have with the "mainstream" Quest 3 headset I don't want to risk spending $2000 on what could turn out to be a fancy paperweight.
I'd love Pro 2 with eye tracking and oleds+ wireless. so sad that they discontinued that. tbh I don't care about pass-through, hand tracking and xr games, nor I need a stand alone. pimax lacks in qc, wireless. somnium is very expensive like apple 😢
FOV wise the old Pimax series. Like 5K(s) and 8K(X) remain the stars with around 180°. using an 8KX myself. This thing has more FOV than my daily glasses. Its just mindbending.
My biggest gripe with VR was always that I can't get the lenses to spread far apart enough. I LOVE VR, and it's brilliant, but it's just not quite there for me yet. The FOV is an issue, you want to be able to glance over rather than having to turn your head to see the side which when you do, you're no longer looking at where you're going. I'm so keen to see where this all ends up in the future.
Just ordered a Crystal Light for sim racing; sounds like I made the right choice. Off to order the faceplate though, wasn't sure if I needed it but sounds like it's a must for decent tracking
Why's the movement so jerky and shaky like a camera? Your eyes and brain don't jerk around like a shaky cam. IRL perception is incredibly smooth. Also, this video is clearly a professional businesses' marketing ploy...trying to look like it's just some independent "youtuber" reviewing something new. This is an advert made to look like an "influencer" review of a new product. Rant incoming: For those who still are clueless somehow, these days there are tons of "digital marketing" companies who actively hire actors to make social media content on behalf of companies, given scripts and so on to try and pretend it's actual "influencers" independently making videos and giving you their real opinions. I had job interviews for two companies like this last year and it was a shock just how fake everything is now becoming as corporate culture is pretty much 100% taking over the entire internet along with industries from music, movies and streaming shows to even the job market itself. I just read reports about how 1/3 of all adults looking for jobs have been scammed by fake job listings and so on as major recruitment websites are being overrun with scam listings that lure people in to just giving them all their personal information, which is now the most profitable resource in the world. Even most legitimate businesses now are just doing anything they possibly can to trick us into giving them more and more personal "data" because they earn billions selling it around the world to literally anyone including actual scammer organizations (it is by no means always hackers taking it).
it’s shaky because you are essentially watching from his own eyes and head. Every single twitch will be picked visible. We don’t notice these twitches and small movements because our eyes naturally stabilize the vision with respect to our head (ex: look at your eyes in the mirror and shake your head side to side or up and down). Also at the beginning he was touching his headset causing it to shake more
As someone who uses vr headset the commenter above is right. When I record videos from my pico 4 headset I see some shaking in it but I never seen any of that shaking when I use it Simply because my human vision just stabilises it It’s completely normal
I'm glad you pointed out some of the flaws with the Crystal Light, the tracking issue is pretty poor and apparently Pimax are quite difficult to deal with in post-sales support.. I was going to get the Crystal Light (coming from a Reverb G2 and a CV1 before that) - but I think I can wait until the next iteration, which hopefully will solve a lot of these issues.. (weight/bulk/tracking/FOV/etc)...
I use a cheap VR headset even for playing flat games on a 150" screen, and there is no going back to monitors. And of course, playing VR is a completely different experience, and it's getting better and better. VR headset (Quest 1, 2, 3) was one of the best purchases of my life for sure.
Honestly at the price its probably better to stick with Quest 3 if you already have one. While yes the resolution is not as good, its still very manageable. But ironically because it has less pixels to worry about, it can maintain a pretty high framerate without needing a NASA grade PC to back it up. The beauty of the Quest 3 is how easy it is to use for everyone while still providing good resuts and it still holds up
I started following you because of your expertise in measuring and showing latency. Now you're into VR and iRacing as well, which is amazing. I hope and expect you'll become interested in VR latency as well. Quest 3 for example, how far behind the DP headsets is it, since the picture needs to be encoded, sent and decoded? How do the different headsets rank? What configuration settings can be made to achieve lower latency? Many are more interested in smoothness with no dropped frames and low latency than resolution that's as high as possible.

I just love that we finally have a useful review of these headsets with great information for trade offs. Thank you so much this helped me out with my purchasing decision
Thank you for this review. I am a full time sim racer and always looking at the newest tech to give me the most immersion possible. VR is great but in my opinion not there yet. Mostly for the reason you outline in your review weight, resolution and FOV. I totally see it coming but when who knows. Till then my 49inch ultra wide will do. Happy racing.
Wider peripheral vr headsets is really needed for better racing vr headsets
Agreed. With the Quest you can limit your horizontal and vertical fov to give more performance headroom. But I never touch the horizontal fov. As a matter of fact I would easily sacrifice performance for increased horizontal fov

Insane that people just now are starting to understand how much more immersive VR racing is.
I wished I experienced what some of you do, but I just don't seem to get the same level of immersion. I'm jealous to be honest.
I've only tried gt7 on psvr2 using a controller and even that is pretty fucking insane in terms of immersion.
@@MrTheNoradinhow far has the immersion and specs gone since the HTC vive? Tried it I bit before Facebook bought the oculus.

@@Bruno-cb5gkyou should try skyrim vr with mods
yeah probably because if you have a good rig you're basically controlling it the same way you would a real car and there's no vr jank to it. I've seen stuff that actually moves you around to simulate g force I bet that would be crazy in vr
Vr is actually better in almost everything.
Actually being able to naturally operate a gun in 3D space is also way better than clicking with your mouse on targets

Even the first PSVR was pretty neat. I can only imagine how good the PSVR2 is.
I've tried racing without VR after doing so for 7 years. I can't do it. My first buy was an Oculus Rift S. It was great as a starter headset.
I have a Varjo Aero now. The clarity is awesome. I'm happy with it for the time being.

For me VR large FOV is important, else it will kill immersion .

Good to see that VR is still moving in the right direction, with some pace. 🤩
I envy optimum having access to such hardware. I live in Brazil, where a VR headset costs a kidney and a half, thanks to import taxes.
It's something special and unfortunately for those who can't or won't give it a shot, it's not really something that can be accurately described, only experienced.
that editing goes hard man, awesome!
Tbh, simracing is probably the type of VR that is any decent and more than just a little gimmick. Its actually usable
vr over the past few years has gotten insane

I started playing GT7 in PSVR2 and I can't go back. I have decades of gran turismo experience and I'm racing better than ever, the depth perception is great. Can't imagine what these crystal googles are like.
130 fov that they state is diagonal, and usually when people talking about vr fov its horizontal which they state is 115, and actually from reviews its closer to 105 (depending on your eyes/head shape)
Correct. Pimax is the worst when it comes to that.

You are one of those channels that made youtube what it is
saying that someone is the reason for youtube to be what it is is pretty much an insult at this point
@@luimu It's almost like the way you say things can make a difference to the meaning, cool concept
Feels like yesterday I was getting feet for my ncase M1 and watching you mod that thing. Look at you now goat, good shit man.
Bro is getting dominated
Bro is in dominatrix
I think bro got dominated by Priests
I find VR is best for unrealistic settings. I'll never go to space, so seeing the stars or flying in ships is impressive. Fighting a dragon, or seeing bright and colourful landscapes that can only exist in fantasy are fascinating. Real life stuff is neat, but it can't compare to actually going there in person.
got my bigscreen beyond a few months ago and I use it for iracing all the time. It's truly amazing
You need a cross strap for the top of your head. Get rid of the thicker face cushion. It's night and day. Plus you get the massive fov.
I moved from a Vive to a Quest3 and it is amazing. Only the tracking was sometimes lacking. VR is amazing now
5:44 maybe the headset is not able to find good reference points to calculate its position on the studio.
Such a great video! So informative and helpful.
The extra weight for sim racing is a HUGE factor since most of sim racers do play for A LOT of hours
You could maybe attach some pulleys with tension to the ceiling as a way of reducing the perceived weight. Just a thought.
Same here.

Nice, you are definitely good at simracing!
Wait until someone makes a VR full face helmet for ultra-realism
I find that tying a small counter weight to the tightening dial of whatever unit I'm using helps spreads the weight out more and makes them more comfy
It looks great, but it's incredible how quest 3 remains at the top, especially for its price, meta nailed it, very affordable for everything it delivers, and it tends to get better and cheaper faster and faster.
The PS VR2 is also now in a nice spot with the price drop ($350) and the recently added compatibility with a PC.
Finally made me dump my HTC Vive after many years. Quest 3 did preeeettttty good.

The weight of the Primax is still only about 30 to 40% the weight of a race helmet you wear in a car anyway.

When I record videos from my pico 4 headset I see some shaking in it but I never seen any of that shaking when I use it
Simply because my human vision just stabilises it
It’s completely normal
I'm glad you pointed out some of the flaws with the Crystal Light, the tracking issue is pretty poor and apparently Pimax are quite difficult to deal with in post-sales support..
I was going to get the Crystal Light (coming from a Reverb G2 and a CV1 before that) - but I think I can wait until the next iteration, which hopefully will solve a lot of these issues.. (weight/bulk/tracking/FOV/etc)...
i really hope bigscreen is making the lenses bigger so the fov's bigger, and if they address the glare ill buy it for sure
Eye tracking too. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I put on the BSB.
That depth perception comes is clutch when looking at girls too.
The beauty of the Quest 3 is how easy it is to use for everyone while still providing good resuts and it still holds up
It looks heavy on the neck, keep up the good work!
