My takeaway from every beef history involving Shaq is the same: big fella is super sensitive and insecure even though he’s accomplished so much in his career
Shaq’s such a strange character. Very charitable and philanthropic, by all accounts a decent man to most people. Yet so wildly insecure and defensive he’ll essentially bully people until he feels safe.
He’s a big child he’s quick to his emotions, if you read about Shaq you would know he’ll been much worst without his stepfather. Shaq is good guy but he lets his emotions take over.
I just want to remind people that Bill Walton did not just 'sit at the end of the bench' in Boston when they won the '86 championship. He played 80 games during the regular season and 16 games during the playoffs, 19 minutes per game during the regular season and 18 minutes per game during the playoffs. Bill Walton also won the 6th man trophy during that very same season.
Yeah, they definitely underplayed how good he was for that Celtics team....he actually took a great, championship team, to a new level. Things don't always show up in stats....if you watched that team Walton could seal up the paint on defense and when he was in the ball movement and flow of the offense was a thing of beauty.
Exactly, I mean the dude was 7ft tall in the 70s where these guy were pretty much forced to play through all sorts of injuries, its no wonder he was only able to fully play 2 seasons of his career and won both a FMVP and a Reg MVP in both those years. That MVP alone makes him an all time great player/hall of famer. But him being top 75 I can understand not liking though.
It’s amazing how everyone of Shaq’s beefs are with someone that admired him and wished for his best. Dude took the sentence “don’t meet your idols” to heart.
Because he's one of those people who's fine with you as long as you agree with everything he says and does and tell him what he wants to hear.....the minute you don't he goes into toddler mode. He's always been like that and still is really.
@@KClouisville I think sometimes that's not even the case. Like Dwight Howard was a real fan of Shaq, had him as his idol and modelled his play after him, and when people pointed some similarities and said the word "superman", Shaq just went ballistic on the dude, taking away from whatever he did. Javale was similar too, Shaq just went after the guy for being a big that wasn't a star like him. It feels kinda sad actually, imagine getting into the league to have your idol bash you constantly and you're not even that bad.
At least he only beefs with big men though, outside of Kobe and maybe small things with other teammates that aren't long lasting, I only hear about Shaq having long term beef with other bigs. Dwight thought he was doing a cool tribute with his superman dunks and Shaq took that as a challenge to one of his nicknames, then there's Bill Walton obviously, Javale McGee
Wilt had his fair share of beefs as well. The two biggest guys but two of the most insecure of the top tier greats. He always hated on Kareem, Russell, MJ, Magic, and a few others. No disrespect to Big Dipper tho. He’s still the man. RIP.
I remember when little Shaq was just a swimming in my sack waiting to get out and grab a basketball. He wasn’t super skilled didn’t have to work hard he was just physically bigger and badder than everyone. If he woulda had a good work ethic been decent at free throws imagine he woulda been that much more dominant
Bill Walton had an incredible run in Portland and another amazing comeback with Boston. Add sixth man award to his career. That in and of itself is a great accomplishment. Shaq's beef was from Walton saying nicely that he needed to loose weight which is true. Shaq looked like a whale at the end of his career.
@@stevelundt6498Peak precedes longevity, and as a top 5 passing big of all time, top 10 defender all time, and giving you about 18 points, Walton has a top 20-30 peak in league history. Think bill russell with a better offensive impact.

Shaq made some decent points but he missed the most important one. Walton has already been stamped by his OGs so the discussion is over. If Russell, Wilt, and Kareem says Walton is one of them, Walton is one of them. Sadly, a large part of Shaq's legacy will be about how much of his talent he wasted.
Shaq was one of the most unstoppable players... for about 8 or 9 years and his lack of growth (and willingness to grow) kind of produced the super ugly decline (the last 8 years) at the end of his career. Imagine how good he could have been if he hit free throws and knew the entire game (not just his game) better.
I remember just before Kobe died , this was after that one on one video they did where they buried the hatchet, Kobe said that if Shaq had worked out the way he did they would have won 12 rings together. Then Shaq got pissed and started posting a bunch of pics of himself destroying people in the paint saying "Does this look lazy?" Kobe's answer to it was "No. It looks...dominant." I love Shaq. He brought 3 rings to the Lakers and was the most dominant force in the NBA when he was at his peak. That being said his refusal to work out and watch his weight WAS the reason that he and Kobe fell apart, even though he also called Kobe the "greatest player on the planet" during that same period. Kobe gets endless hate for a number of things but the break up with Shaq is key among them. Perhaps this beef with Walton will have people see Kobe's side of the beef with a little more clarity. (I realize I put Kobe and beef together... I think I'll have steak tonight.)
Bill walton is honestly one of the most unique stars in league history a finals mvp and league mvp that never truly reached his prime how many players can say that
there's many stars that didn't reach their prime. I agree with Shaq. Bill probably shouldn't be in HOF, and nobody seems to question it. Only a couple of great seasons, whilst in other seasons he played between 30-50 games.
Walton won a rebounding title, a block title, and had two 1st team all-defense selections. Shaq has a total of (checking notes, oh right) 0 for all of those things. Also, Walton matched Shaq's MVP total, which is understandable for how shortened his prime was, but not understandable for Shaq, really. In fact, it's downright pitiful for someone who played so long with his physical gifts. So Bill did some things Shaq never did, which are the hallmarks of all the greatest centers. (Which other of the greatest centers never won a rebound or a block title, and never made 1st team all-defense?) Walton's team won four straight against Kareem's Lakers (when Kareem was league MVP), and then four straight against Dr. J's 76ers (after going down 0-2 in Philly). Shaq is tied for being swept the most times in NBA playoff history.
@TheEsquireofSports.2.0Just because you’re more skilled, doesn’t make you better. If that’s the case, Arvydas Sabonis is the GOAT center and Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady are better than Kobe Bryant.

As big as Shaq is, he has the temperament of a 15 year old high school cheerleader. But yeah, a healthy Bill Walton is probably an all time top-five center. The Trailblazers were (easily) cruising to their second straight championship in 1978 before Bill went down.

Shaq can be funny but a pretty bad analyst as far as the finer points of the game. His only comment is usually man up and play better. Not exactly Einstein there.
@@Gnofg precisely, he's one of the worst analysts out there in any sport. He's good on TNT at making the telecast fun, he's actually okay and quite good at times discussing more how to players should conduct themselves on the court, stand up for themselves or one another, but like you said, finer points of the game, lazy as they come. @@megusta288Especially considering that Hulk Hogan was the one who ratted out Jesse Ventura and the rest of the wrestlers who were trying to unionize during the 80's, and was subsequently rewarded with all of the fame and attention he could handle.
Bill Walton was an absolute BEAST!! His NBA career was cut short but he won 2 Championships one of which he was the number one option and won League and finals MVP. Shaq is more accomplished but Walton is VERY underrated.
I believe Bill Walton was the most talented big man to play the game. If only he could have stayed healthy. Walton’s IQ on the court was off the charts. Even John wooden and Jack Ramsey put Walton at the top center
Walton's inclusion on the list is mostly a nod to his absolute peak. In those 18 months in the late 70's he legitimately was the best player in the league. Absolutely insane on the court and the first person to be better on the court than the godlike Kareem at the time. Sad he was never able to keep it up, but because those heights are so hard to reach, he's given credence.
If you haven't watched it, Thinking Basketball has a Greatest Peaks series and the Walton episode is great. I never questioned him but that episode really made me look at him even better.
He "couldn't keep it up" bc he had a hairline fracture in his foot and played through it..while dominating! Had Walton played in today's game.. the hairline fracture would've been diagnosed and he couldve been healed. But sadly..he played in a time when injuries like that couldn't be diagnosed.
“You are the common factor in all of your failed relationships.” I love that quote! But the psych/major social worker in me has to point out how it’s an incorrect way to think about relationships. Sometimes when a relationship fails, you share the blame with the other party. This is of course the most common. Sometimes it truly is ALL your fault, you did something unforgivable. And on the opposite end, sometimes you do nothing wrong, and the other party screws up royally. So, saying “you’re the common factor in all of your failed relationships with other humans” is technically true, but it’s true by default. YOUR relationship can’t EXIST without YOU being a factor. So it’s “technically” true but doesn’t stand up to the most basic logical argument. Fun to say tho.
@@jluchette True, but if someone tends to end up either in toxic relationships or having beef with everyone, maybe that person's contribution is looking for the wrong kind of person. I read Phil Jacksons book and understand Shaqs psychology super well because I had a teammate who went really far and almost touched the NBA and he had the same exact mentality. @@wvu05 Yes but Shaq is right because his greatness ended with that first major foot injury. He does not merit hof based on longevity. Walton not only player in hall like that.
For someone that claims to have been raised by a disciplinarian and also claims to hate bullies, Shaq really is just the exact opposite of disciplined and respectful. Dudes that bully that wants to be the most liked in the room at anyone else’s expense and will snap at the smallest amount of fight from anyone.
You’re spot on. He alternates between the most wholesome respectful nice guy in the world to extreme petty and bully. This is the same man who has admitted he had to literally create a fictitious beef in his head with David Robinson to motivate himself to go against him. Shaq has admitted he was a bully, even as a youngster. He has said that an experience snapped him out of it as a kid, but it seems he has still kept those same tendencies even as an adult.
The admiral had to put up with lies about his character from Shaq. Years later. All Shaq said was kidding… A man of David’s character that simply won’t due. If there dueling was still legal. This would have been pistols at 10 paces. Really wonder who Shaq could get to stand as a second? He burnt so many bridges. Everyone was on the Admirals side. He truly was one of the great Centers a complete two way monster.
Shaq is one of the most impactful big men ever, his resume is incredible. He’s done a TON of generous stuff off the floor too. And he’s also consistently been a bully. He spends some of his time knocking others down, rather than building his own achievements up. He always says he’s the master marketer - and the fact we talk about him confirms he gets people talking. But he gets people talking about him in a negative way. If he’s worried about his legacy on the floor being forgotten as other greats have also been minimised or forgotten, it’s totally understandable. But hounding people only makes people remember him negatively.
Anyone who knows anything about Shaq knows that unless you roll over for him at the slightest bit of disagreement, he will throw a fit over it and say some pretty bad takes about the whole thing. This is the dude who made up a fake beef, nothing is too petty for him.
I'm surprised this video didn't mention Shaq's admiration for George Mikan since he and George did appear together here and there. Also, when Mikan died, Shaq was able to pay for his funeral and even stated that "Without number 99 [Mikan], there is no me." Nonetheless, this was a really good and informative vid. Great work as always Seth! Also, RIP Bill.

Shaq often talks about how modern players are too sensitive (he's right btw). But it's crazy to see that given his dramas with Kobe, Dwight, Walton, Robinson & others, that Shaq was just as sensitive as the modern players. I'm a Shaq fan. But maybe his new nickname should be "The Big Hypocritical"
Modern players aren’t anymore sensitive than past. We just have social media that tells us what they’re saying and doing 24/7. Scottie sat on the bench in 94 because he was mad he had to Inbound, MJ punched a teammate in the face for challenging him. People have always been people.
No player in league Historyvis more sensitive than Shaq. He made up lied about David Robinson years later he said he was just kidding. Life doesn’t work that way. You own the words you use. It defines your character as a man not become a character.
It's weird because of all the sports commentators out there, Walton was the MOST qualified to criticize Shaq. It's a wonder Shaq ever was able to get into broadcasting if he holds grudges against anybody who ever said anything bad about his performances.
If there's anyone I would take advice from about foot and ankle injuries as a professional basketball center, it's Bill Walton. The man won two championships with the worst ankles in the NBA.
Shaq would've definitely gotten at least a few more healthy, prime-formed seasons had he controlled his weight. His Orlando shape was ideal for him; this whole thing about him reaching his prime with the Lakers thanks to the weight gain is misleading, considering he could've focused on strength training and muscle mass rather than fat and gotten comparable or better results with far less overall mass. There's no magic in this world; no person can healthily carry so much weight while jumping, sprinting, and getting hit for hours daily.
@@marquiseboyd282 Average at best? If you want to argue that Shaq had a better career than Walton, sure, but Walton at his peak was as good as anybody. @@marquiseboyd282this dude was able to give it to prime Kareem when healthy. Bill Walton is very underrated. May have been one of the best centers of all time if it was for injuries and Portland’s shitty medical team.

I think most people who truly understand the basics of center play would agree that few centers have ever embodied the all-around skill set that Walton possessed. Shaq is often funny, but also many times just a hardheaded monster of a man who bullied his way to success. He was so big and so strong he rarely ventured from more than 7 feet from the basket. He is a bit insecure. I'll take the other guys any day over him. Akeem was another marvelous center with amazing athletic ability and a great persona, always smiling.
Yep. I dare anyone to watch that series and not be amazed. He was like Jokic. However instead of scoring as much he got like 4 blocks a game and was an absolutely dominant defender.

It has to be said however that Bill Walton's 1986 comeback was a catalyst to the Celtics winning the championship that year. What guy could play right away, limited minutes and produce in a way that made the Celtics win big games? He was subbing for Mchale and Parish. And still played a critical role in that championship season. A game changer. Not to mention his past Blazers glory.
Walton, when healthy, led the league in blocked shots and rebounds. Shaq never did either. Walton ran the court, was a great passer, DPOY and MVP. Good man, bad feet.
The best ability is availability. Walton is overrated. Is Walton on the same level as Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, Derrick Rose or Yao Ming? Or is Walton comparable to Greg Oden and Zion Williamson?
Who cares if its 2 seasons. He won a ring, finals mvp and regular season mvp. How many people in the HOF played 10 plus years without getting one of those?
I may be too young to speak on this, but for me Bill Walton deserves to be on that list of top 10-15 greatest centers to lace up. 6000 points and 2 all stars are unbelievably low. Seeing him play, you know he definitely had that talent and ability to be that kind of guy and I bet if he'd played even a decade of healthy basketball he'd have 9 all-stars, 2 mvps, at least 20k points and hopefully more rings. We'll never get to see that and it sucks cuz I don't wanna hold that against him
Yao Ming is in the hall of fame, but I don't recall Shaq ever having a problem with him. Ming scored at a higher rate than Walton over the course of his career, but I don't recall Ming being on championship winning teams or winning MVP awards or being the NBA's rebounding or blocks leader.
There was nothing like watching the NBA on NBC in the early 2000's when the Lakers were on and hearing Bill Walton say "Throw it down big man, Throw It dowwwwwn" after a thunderous Shaq dunk.
Walton easily could’ve been as good as or better than Shaq, but he literally couldn’t attempt a shot without getting hurt. There’s a fantastic video about the peak version of him in Portland by Thinking Basketball, it’s highly worth the watch. He was uniquely dominant during that time.
He wouldn't have been as good as shaq lets stop that discussion. But he would've entered that top 8 discussion in the center position (the most decorated position)

The Portland championship was the most dominant display of a center by Walton I’ve ever seen. Chocolate thunder was so frustrated he yanked the toilets out of his locker room
A 2 time champ, with 1 ring he was leading his team, a league MVP, a highly decorated college player. Why is Shaq arguing about Bill being in the 75 greatest and not Dame who hasn't won a thing?
Bill Walton in his 76-77 year played better than Shaq ever did in a single season. He won MVP, Finals MVP, and led the youngest team in NBA history to ever win an NBA to a championship. Probably the biggest underdog to ever win was his Blazers year when they won it. Shaq needs to respect
if you have "big" mentality you fix up cars making 40 grand a year. Why would you strive for money and fame if you were happy and satisfied with yourself.
3:47 Walton played ONE full season in the NBA - with the Celtics as the 6'th Man of the Year. His championship came in his next-high season - 61 or so regular season games. I think his 3'd high season was .... 47 or so? 4:14 He was a LOT more than a "low minute glue guy" for the Celtics - you don't win the 6'th man award with LOW minutes or as a mere "glue guy".
Shaq learned the hard way the classic saying: you either retire at the right time, or play long enough to become the modern day Bill Walton on the Celtics. The one thing he always swore to avoid.
How do you have beef with Bill Walton of all people? He doesn't do anything except watch basketball, listen to Grateful Dead, and meat-ride Larry Bird in interviews
I loved Bill Walton on that Trailblazer team however I had been saying the same thing! He is the only player in NBA history to make not only The Hall of Fame but the Top 75 of all time on what potentially he would have been if he wasn’t hurt as much!
I think it helps that on Bill Waltons Short Prime he won an MVP and A Championship on a 3 year stretch. There are people with longer career who made it to HOF that didn't come close to those things.
Secret Base can probably put together a Shaq compilation of ppl he beefed with and it will genuinely almost always involve some “slight” or insecurity complex against someone who somehow threatened Shaq’s legacy without ever actually threatening how great he was.
I love the irony that Shaq always gatekeeping guys from the best big men of all time conversation perfectly highlights what held him back from being unanimous greatest big man of all time. If Shaq was a better leader and teammate he could have stayed in LA and won so much more. I think he had the talent to win 8 or 10 rings, he just didn't have the character.
there really cant be an unanimous vote on any goat, see Bron vs MJ. But Shaq definitely has a lot of people agreeing he is the best big guy of all times.
There should be an asterisk next to Bill Walton because unless you watched this man play on a regular basis which I did… He would’ve realize this center was the penultimate team player. The team was run by a basketball genius named Dr. Jack Ramsay. Bill Walton was 24 years old when he led the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA title in an era when every team had a great center on it. Bill Walton could dominate a game and score 3 points which I saw him do one time versus the Celtics. The Blazers championship team had a rookie, Johnny Davis starting for it the day they won it all. It was not his fault that his foot didn’t hold up and he didn’t score 38,000 points in his career. When he did play, he was right up there in the top three greatest centers of all time.

Then Shaq got pissed and started posting a bunch of pics of himself destroying people in the paint saying "Does this look lazy?"
Kobe's answer to it was "No. It looks...dominant."
I love Shaq.
Perhaps this beef with Walton will have people see Kobe's side of the beef with a little more clarity.

hahaha starting
When you beef with everyone else, you may be the problem
“You are the common factor in all of your failed relationships.”
I love that quote!
How do you have beef with Bill Walton of all people? He doesn't do anything except watch basketball, listen to Grateful Dead, and meat-ride Larry Bird in interviews
Please. We all know Shaq is Mr. Sensitive. This has been proven in TNT's Inside The NBA by Charles Barkley. 🤣
RIP Big Bill
@@maxmeier532i would argue wayne gretzky is the unanimous goat of his sport
@@KeegoTheWise Yes. ask any hockey fan and they will tell you so.
Shaq as great as his career is underachieved.
Shaq has soo many Beef Historys they should be released as a Netflix Series. 😂😂😂
Bill came to 1977 playoffs and took out all the dominant players .At that moment he showed he was the best. That alone qualify's him Hall Of Fame
Hey man, Walton was 6th man of the year and played almost every game during the 85-86 celtics regular season and playoff run. He wasn't just a "glue guy".
