Thank you for your analysis on this set. I’m in the process right now buying a 460 magnum and this is very valuable info.

One of my best friends owns, hunts with, and shoots, on a regular basis, a .460 revolver and discovered that the dies covered in this video were SUPERIOR to the .45 Colt and .454 dies he uses for his revolvers and carbines in that caliber. Josh is a VERY careful hand loader and I've fired any number of rounds he has produced and if he says use the dies designed from the get go for a particular caliber, especially those I don't personally own firearms for, I'm going with what he says every time. Excellent video!

FortuneCookie45LC I appreciate your response more than I can say. Please take into account that I have been in and out of reloading SEVERAL times and have only fairly recently (thanks to you and a couple of other YT providers that I have come to trust to provide ACCURATE information) started reloading for my rifles and handguns again. Way back when, I depended on several magazines for reloading information and more than once, with the .44 Special in particular, discovering that the loads they showcased were HOT to say the least and very often not all that accurate in the real world. I learned quickly, that some .44 Special loads that came "highly recommended" in those magazines were best reserved for revolvers such as my Ruger Blackhawk (which I stupidly traded along the line). And don't get me started on some of the .357 Magnum loads some of those magazine writers of the late 1960s and early 1970s "recommended" as I'm not sure that Winchester 92, 94, 95 action rifles, carbines OR a Ruger Blackhawk could handle on a regular basis without suffering from damage or early "wear out". I have never been muzzle blast or recoil sensitive....But REALLY? Some of the loads I copied, carefully, were awesome in those departments to say the least. Now that I'm back into reloading yet again, I depend on a handful of YT providers AND my reloading manuals for safe, accurate, and dependable information only. I'm too damn old to be monkin' around with "wildcat" loads and too poor to have my firearms repaired (assuming they could be repaired) or replace them. I ain't as stupid as I use to be....Gettin' old CAN be a good thing.

Cookie you don't have to justify anything with me, I didn't need the lube-sizing machine I have, However, It sure is nice to have the tools that make the job go as smooth like butter. You are absolutely right about neck tension also, that is such an overlooked step in reloading. Nice Video Dave.

When loading for 45 Colt, 454 and 460, it's nice to have a die set for each, already set up and ready to go. I don't even like using the same set for 38/357 or 44 Special/Magnum. Even the little spacer doesn't always work. I have a die set for each and in a few cases I have dedicated seating dies for specific bullets locked down and adjusted. For the 44 Magnum I have them set up for 240 XTP, Lyman Keith, and one That floats for other miscellaneous bullets.

Ditto. Just got a 460 X frame. Even though I have 2 sets of 45 Colt dies (one for single stage for small batches, and one set that stay on a Dillon 1050) I got a set of Lyman 460 dies. Worth it to not have to readjust.

Great minds think alike! I have a set of these and really like them. I don’t use them for 454 loading, but I do use 454 RCBS dies to load 45 colt.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC

SuperUncleRyan - Our usual evaluation rules do apply, don't they? First, does the die set allow loading safe ammunition? Then, does the die set allow loading performance accurate ammo. Then is the die set of high quality and finish? Then, Is the die set durable? Finally, is the price in our ballpark? Those are the priority points for us to assess the dies. Seems the RCBS scores high on all these. I should do a video on this. Thanks for the idea - it's in the cue. Might even push it up to front and center. Have a great day, FC Steve

My buddy has a 460 in a Thompson Encore and what a brute of a round it is!!! Dang near takes my metal targets off the bar when it hits at a hundred yards... Great set of dies,
50 bucks is not bad at all for what your gettin.

dowdawg - Have seen 460s and 500s at our range (not the 500 recently though - the 50 BMG has been banned in CA as of 2004 - 500 shooters have been discouraged from taking their guns to ranges). The 460 is as close to a true handgun rifle there is (sure the bolt action single shot pistols don't really seem like "true" handguns to me). Have a great day, FC

Never understood someone spending good money on a firearm and then “making due” on dies and other necessities. My only complaint with RCBS dies are that I like the look of their cowboy dies better than the standard ones. 😊

      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Mike Treen - I'm with ya on that one..!! I have the cowboy dies and they are mighty nice to use...their regular dies are still fine though...the RCBS Cowboy Dies work extremely well with cast bullets...(and jacketed also..!!) Best to ya, FC

      $1200 Gun, check.
      $12.99 holster, check.
$0.00 making due with the wrong dies, check.
Baffles me. The firearm should be viewed as just one piece in a set of essential components.

I agree with you Steve, if they wanted you to use other die sets to load those cartridges they wouldn't have made the one you just got !

FC, SW 460 is a unusual caliber, all the die makers for this caliber are made with different dimensions , using 460/45LC lee & 45LC hornady do not size properly, not enough neck tension, you can take a HCLead .452 & push it with your fingers to seat,,,,NG....... 460 Hornady is the only dies that size properly, I never tried RCBS for this caliber, also I only size the top of case where bullet seats, FL sizing is too hard on the dies .015+ FL Size is required, hard on brass & dies, SW chambers are sized large to assist extraction of the 58k psi round, this makes the cases very large when fireformed they do not like buyers to reload.....If you have any comments, Please advise, thanks

Just buy the correct thing for what you are loading. If you can’t buy the appropriate tools, shouldn’t do the job. I would never use .500 to size and seat a 44mag. Although it would fit. Don’t cross train your dies, that leads to trouble.
