I cannot even begin to let you know how giddy I am that you are reacting to one of my favourite shows. Cillian grew up just down the road from me and it is amazing to follow his career
The way I interpret is that after Grace sang to Tommy, he had a 'soft heart' moment that made him see things from Ada's perspective. Plus he wants to keep his sister safe from the possible blowback of his plans. That's why he asked Freddie to come back and take his sister away.
Tommy isn't a monster, but the times were different. He loves Freddie, it's his bestfriend, but he got Ada pregnant before marrying her AND he's being investigated by Campbell right alongside everyone else. So in the end, Tommy trying to send Freddie away and keep him away had everything to do with the investigation and the current situation. Freddie being there complicates things.
Blinder is actually more likely to come from the local slang, a blinder is somebody that's dressed up well and as we see from the start they take pride in their appearance
I discovered my 18 year old son was watching this series. I wanted to check it out to see what he was being “exposed to”. I am a Peace-loving, regular Mom, but when I say I binged this series so much even my son was laughing at me! I’m so glad to see you doing this one. I just finished your viewing of Breaking Bad and i love your reactions and analyses. And yes, it’s now my son’s and my joke, “by order of the Peaky Blinders!” 😂
I love that! And yes, Arthur is absolutely wonderful. Despite his occasional craziness, he was supremely loyal, and by the end of the series he was my favorite character. Fantastically written, excellently acted.
The aftereffects of World War I mean so much in the beginning of this series. The soldiers, especially the tunnelers, went through hell and then came home to find their service meant little to those in power. Hence Freddie’s zeal for social reform, Tommy’s use of opium to help him sleep and quiet the terrors of war (as well as his determination to bring power to his family), Arthur’s cut-throat loyalty to his family, John’s violence, Danny Whizbang’s psychological state, Polly’s vigilance and on and on. Plus their absolute allegiance to each other is another by-product of their service. Such a good series and so well crafted! Glad to be watching it again with you. Peace …
The other big thing is the fact that Campbell did not server in the army. He run counter-insurgency operations in Ireland which was a nightmare of its own but many of the characters do not see it as equal to the service in France.
Razor Blades have always played a part in Britains underworld. Years ago In Glasgow certain gangs would sew blades into there suit Lapels, so if someone grabbed them in a threatening manner , they would always have there fingers damaged or lost.
There's a few comments on what Peaky Blinders mean mostly about the name of the cap and blinding persons with razor blades but here's another take a found. The cap style worn was referred as a peaky because they would tilt it down to almost cover one eye and blinders was a popular slang term in Birmingham referred to persons that dressed in a dapper appearance.
I'm pretty sure the kid who gets given the weapon is Finn, who says in the first episode he's 11 in less than a week. So yeah he's a child, but he's not under 10.
If the Peaky Blinders ever ran out of horse races, they could always open a book on how many people are going to make the same explanation about the meaning of the name 'Peaky Blinders'
Remember, Tommy is also smoking opium, and drinking Irish. WWI was brutal all around--tunneler-- one of the worst jobs. Nikki's reaction to the kids made me laugh. Youth culture is a modern concept. Back then, child labor was real deal with no protections--legal or otherwise. Freddie and Tommy were childhood friends--that is why he is not afraid of Tommy. But he also really does not understand Tommy's role.
I laughed when she said "their accent is so strong I'm surprised you could understand them" 😂😂😂 Cillian murphy who plays Tommy is as Irish as they come 😂 heck his wife's last name is McGuiness 😂
The original term was meant to describe someone who dressed nice. "Blinder" is an old Birmingham slang term for a dapper person and peaky described the caps they wore.
I found you guys' channel only a few days ago. I love your reactions AND you guys reacted to about all my favourite shows, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings, Beef and Peaky Blinders now and I'm going to watch them ALL. Keep it up!
I've already seen the series, but seeing you guys experience for the first time makes me want to re-binge it. After I finish Letterkenny again, think I'll rewatch this series.
I love how they think that Kids drinking and smoking and fighting was only in that time-period. The kids in Birmingham still drink, fight and smoke 😂 i should know
There was a whole underground (literally) war on the western front in WW1. Both sides tried tunnelling under each other’s trenches to plant explosives and both sides dug tunnels to try and intercept the enemy's tunnels. If they met, the fighting would be man-to-man with pistols, bayonets and shovels due to the confined space. Both sides used listening devices to try and track the other making it like submarine warfare but underground instead of under the sea! Both sides recruited civilian miners for their digging expertise!
Singing banned songs was a massive deal at that time - you could be arrested just for being present when one was sung. Singing a pro IRA song in the Peaky Blinders' pub was a major provocation.
BSA stands for Birmingham Small Arms. At the time they were a HUGE manufacturer and employer. Pretty much everyone in Birmingham would have a relative working there. They were most famous for their guns and motor cycles.
This is the episode that hooked me on this show. I know you guys are very ahead on patreon but im glad that you guys are watching it and uploading it for free fairly quickly here.
They have blades in the peak of their caps which they use to blind people. Peaky blinders. I'm not sure if that where the name comes from but that's my interpretation?
Guys the flat caps are also called Peak caps (because of the flat peak on them). The blades are usually used to attack an opponents eyes. Hence, the peaky blinders. They use their peakies (peak caps) to blind an enemy. Not my opinion. but the true reason. ; ))
Peaky is the name of the type of hats they wear (like beret, cowboy, top, etc) and Blinder comes from that they sow razor blades into the backs of their peaky hats. Used to take off the hat and flick the blades over an opponents eyes, blinding them...
@NikkiStevenReact Peaky Blinders meaning: ''Peaky'' is the name given to the cap that the gang wears at the time. And ''Blinders'' are given for the sewn blades which they put between the visor and the hat. Because, you know, they cut off their enemies' sight by removing their caps and hitting them with the visor/blade. Some also say that ''Blinders'' is Birmingham slang for a gangster.
Tommy is always thinking and planning. He is such a great character. As good as this show is in the beginning it hasn’t actually gotten good yet! Seriously you two are in for a treat with this show!!! FYI- they are making a peaky blinders movie and yes cillian will be playing Tommy again! I can’t wait!
My Pop served in the Great War, briefly. He was court-martialed for striking a German officer (long story). I'm 46, and I've even been called a liar because the maths doesn't work out for some. My great uncle was a runner, like in the film Gallipoli. They would run in pairs, and he returned. He had several partners. The guilt that stayed with him till the day he died must have been unbearable, he rarely spoke of it.
The term “peaky blinders” is derived from the style of caps the gang wears, being “peaky caps” combined with the razorblades they sew into them, hence “blinders.” Love your videos. This is one of my all time favorite shows. In my opinion, it is up there with BB and BCS. You’ll love it more every season!
Sorry if someone else has explained this and if there are any errors but during WW1 there was a regiment of soldiers commonly referred to as Clay kickers. They were tunnellers who would tunnel under the other enemy and try to blow them up from underneath. It was a disgusting job and as both sides were tunnelling towards each other they would often discover each other or their opponents tunnels and cave them in. The warfare has since been outlawed under the rules of engagement as the men who fought like that were extremely traumatised from what they endured.
So 'Peaky Blinders' has somewhat of a dual meaning for the show. 'Peaky' was a term for any flat cap with a peak, like the caps they were in the show. 'Blinder' was a term used to describe something or someone with a dapper appearance...while also hinting at the use of razors hidden in the brim of the peaky to to slash at the eyes and blind their enemies.
peaky blinder (Peaky) refers to the Peak caps they are all wearing. (Blinder) the razorblades they put in the hat which they usually use on people, often they aim for the face/eyes blinding the person.
In case no one told you or I missed your comment on it, Kimber's accountant is Alfred from The Last Kingdom. That's why you recognized him last episode.
What I like about this show is that the writing and acting keeps the story and people grounded in the age... this wasn't a show to forget about history and peoples position in it. On to episode 4.
In the first episode, they tell you how old the youngest Shelby boy is when Tommy walks in on him smoking by the fireplace. Finn: "Arthur's mad as hell..." Tommy: "What does a 10 year old know about hell, eh?" Finn: "I'm 11 Sunday!" Side note: as an American, I was a little shocked when I was in Ireland because I would see kids on their way to school and watched boys walk into a school (that Cillian Murphy went to!) who looked to me to be about 10, but they were closer to 15...kids just look like kids longer over there...the people, in general are smaller. I'm short and am used to being surrounded by giants and never being able to see anything in crowds, but was able to enjoy several shows without having my view completely blocked by someone a foot taller than me.
The name 'Peaky blinders' is from the real life gang who wore they're hats over so far to one side, it would partially blind them therefore making their 'peakers'- eyes, blind. Another reason is for the blades in the hat
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the name "Peaky Blinder" comes from the fact that in fights they usually go for the eyes first. You can see it at the beginning of the 2nd episode when they fight the other gypsies
my fix , i still watch peaky as i understand what was actually going on in them days my father , father told me many stories . the very pub they drank in is still there , a customer ordered some pop instead of beer , when he left the pub peaky blinders went after him and beat him with a buckle belt for drinking pop.
Peaky Blinders have 2 meanings. One, they wore their caps peaked, right over their brow. Two, in the show they would often blind people with their razors. Peakys was slang for eyes. So they would blind the peakers.
Peaky Blinders=the razor blades the gang keep in their caps to 'blind people' So glad you both enjoy the series so far. Season 2's last episode 'Derby day' is one of the greatest episodes of TV ever made..enjoy!! 😊
It may seem like the IRA being included is just another show throwing them in as another rival, but Birmingham has a massive Irish community and them doing in business in the city would have been accurate
Nikki: “They’re babies. He’s like, 7!!” Me: “That 7 year old would kick my ass” 😂 I also wonder about the punishment poor Steven’s arm has taken over the years as Nikki takes grip in moments of horror. Looks like he doesn’t even feel it anymore. You know that way a massive rhino can’t feel the bird stood on its back, just chillin’.
"peaky" comes from the design of flat caps (or paddy caps) they wear. if you look at their hats from a fashion perspective, the curved part of at the front of a cap is called a "peak", the way the soft top part of the hat is formed is also referred to as "peaked", with it's rounded nature and top button (or squatchee) at the centre or "peak" 🤓 "blinders" is because of the razors they use to blind people, funnily enough sewn between the peak and the peaked section of their caps😂

Being a tunneler in WW1 was horrific. I cant even imagine later life trying to deal with it.

My guess is "Peaky" is nickname for the cap they wear. Blinders is obvious damage done from the razor's edge in the cap.
"peaky" comes from the design of flat caps (or paddy caps) they wear. if you look at their hats from a fashion perspective, the curved part of at the front of a cap is called a "peak", the way the soft top part of the hat is formed is also referred to as "peaked", with it's rounded nature and top button (or squatchee) at the centre or "peak" 🤓
"blinders" is because of the razors they use to blind people, funnily enough sewn between the peak and the peaked section of their caps😂
when i first saw Cillian murphy in the peaky blinders I immediately shouted "Hey its Damien from the wind that shakes the barley!"
