Filipino-Americans talk about being Filipino.
What makes a Filipino? Is it where we were born? The food we eat? The way we speak? Or what's in our hearts?
No crisis of identity here. Filipino is as Filipino feels. The Philippines, perhaps more than any other Southeast Asian country, has always been about diversity. Even more, as our people scatter all over the world. Our community is a quintessential melting pot of cultures, beliefs, and idiosyncrasies. We are not one boring blanket of color. We are a rich and vibrant tapestry. We were born to be different. So let’s be.

That is so true about Nanays and Lolas being suuuuuuper doting-they want you to eat well! I love my Nanay in Bataan. I loved this video magkaroon ng mas maraming bidyo na ganito. Nalungkot ako nang Napanood ko ito na wala akong dugong Pinoy. At least, tumira ako sa Pilipinas dati at marunong akong mag-Tagalog at Sobrang bait ng mga Pinoy At Pinay lalung-lalo nang nalaman nila na marunong akong managalog! Ang paborito kong ulam ay Adobo At Tocino. At paborito ko rin ang ginataang bilu-bilo! Kung nabasa ng mga nainterbyu ang mensahe kong ito, hanapin nyo ako. Magtambay tayo!

@@squidusn71 you can't blame her, there's stereotype and discrimination towards asians in the states before, causing other Fil-Am kids to hate and not very accepting of their Filipino side, same with other asian kids in the states. But things are better now, and they are more accepting of it.

@@adomniapericula well different people have different ways to cope up with discrimination, that's why a lot of them are outcasts cause what they do is just avoid people in general so they wont get the chance to be talked about and judged.

My dad is Norwegian/Swedish and my mom is Filipino (Kapampangan) and I eat Bagnet and Crispy Pata almost everyday.

i lived in glendale CA more than 10 years, loved it, so many filipino establishments, westfield mall in eagle rock has goldilocks, jollibee, chowking, lbc and seafood city, also in eagle rock are nanay gloria, toto's lechon and lutong bahay, in glendale are max, barrio fiesta, red ribbon, arko.

These are my people!!!! Being Fil-Am can be tough sometimes. Because you feel like you don’t fit into any category. And people don’t know “what” you are so we’re always asked about our country of origin which is America. Then they realize we are just as American. LOL
There's some mixes that if you take those two countries and put that together, its stunning. Funny how often that those types pair up. I guess its mother nature doing its magic.

I think it’s sad that so many of my fellow Filipino-Americans pass themselves off as Polynesian, Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. I was always taught that we are ASIAN. We don’t wear grass skirts, we don’t dance the hula, we don’t roast pigs underground, we don’t speak Polynesian languages. It’s sad that so many Fil-Am’s don’t embrace the FILIPINO roots. 🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️

I was on my early teen when I came to the US. Almost all the American born filipino kids were mean and making fun of me at school and there were many of them. As I grew to be an adult and had become Americanized, almost all of the Philippine born adults are the ones that are mean and makes fun of me. How ironic.

I moved to the Philippines to survive retirement. I have never been happier and now have a wonderful Philippine wife.
I would like to hear about race in the Philipines. I think that would be interesting in addition to food and perceptions. A question would be how did the influences of Spain shape thoughts around race - like whitening skin, no dark skin models that would represent the full range of Filipinos. It's like a subject that is at the surface, but not spoken of.

Good to know the young Filipino>Americans being proud to be Filipinos. Surprisingly, they are looking happy and open like most young Filipinos in the Philippines whenever they talk of topics of their interest. The difference, I with other youths of other countries , I think , is their happy expressions in their faces deskpite the surprise questions. AURAPHIL thanks for sharing.
Filipinos, even the mixed race ones or "halfies" as some call them, are mostly easy-going and love to smile, and that's known the world over 😊
