Its semi well documented, but perhaps the biggest inspiration isnt a literary one, but rather the film "the nightmare before christmas", which is apparantly one of oda's favorites. Its explains the looks of hogback and cindry, who are similar to finklestein and sally, with a likewise relationship only romantic and a wee bit creepier, brook is styled after jack skellington (mixed with saul "slash" hudson apparently, although this bit isnt confirmed, just highly speculated) and moriah takes on the role of oogie boogie, through his use of shadows and general sack-like body shape

While Thriller Bark isn’t one of my favorites, there is one thing in it that is pretty consistent (for the most part). The humor. This arc is honestly one of the funniest ones.
With the exception of Sanji, the character humor of the Straw Hats works so well in this one. From Usopp’s pessimism to Franky rapidly building things to Robin finally being herself after everything that happened in Enies Lobby, it does not really miss for me.
And it also has great character development for the majority of the Straw Hat crew, especially Zoro and Usopp. So while it may be a bit weak in some areas, Thriller Bark does manage to be pretty memorable when it counts.

I think you just illustrated what I feel is one of the biggest issues in internet discourse: Confusing personal taste with quality. Also, feeling the need to rank stuff and considering the lower ranks disposable. E.g. Long Ring Long Land is not one of my favourites, but it's still enjoyable and I understand its purpose in the story.

I imagine the creator of Full Metal Alchemist also took inspiration from The Island of Dr. Moreau book, with the way that Edward confronted Nina’s father about what he did to her being something which parallels how the Edward from the book confronted the Doctor as well.

Thriller Bark has a ton of cool inspirations, really neat seeing so many all together here.
Cindry is largely inspired by the Japanese ghost story, Bancho Sarayashiki or The Dish Mansion at Bancho. Both Cindry and the ghost from the story appear out of a well, and both count plates.

I like characters that have defined flaws, sure Sanji's dream aligning with the arcs antagonist is not one of the trait a main protagonist should have but that's also what makes him more interesting to me. The zombies even comment how Sanji's dream is as equally perverted as Absalom's but what separates them his chivalry. Absalom was fine with Nami accidentally getting hurt mid-battle, she was his property after all. Absalom sees Nami only as an object while Sanji doesn't want his blood to stain Nami's dress. And through that chivalry Sanji came out the victor.
Zeff saw Sanji's perverted nature since he was a child and ingrained him with the lesson of never harming a woman, and Sanji will do everything in his power to not disappoint that father figure who he respects so much. Sora gave her life to protect Sanji's emotion and thus everything about Sanji is extreme, he is the most kindest, passionate, chivalries and also unfortunately the horniest. Maybe without a good parental figure Sanji might have turned out like Absalom but Zeff was there guide him.
Though that still doesn't excuse his perverted behaviour. And in Wano he made the choice to destroy the raid suit which was also his "dream" and i find it interesting that Oda specifically chooses to include the line "farewell women's bath" in that moment. I believe that indicates grows of some level. Especially considering that Oda is seemingly planning to put Sanji and Pudding together by the end of the series, and the reason Pudding fell in love with him at all was because Sanji choose to not act like a tone-deaf child with her like he does with Nami and every other female characters.

Another fun detail was inspired by Dracula. At the start of the novel, the protagonist takes a ride in a mysterious chariot and he sees strange blue flames. I don't remember what the anime did, but in the colored manga, the chariot the Coward Squad rode in had blue flames!
Reading Thriller Bark with friends while reading Dracula at the same time, that was a fun detail.

How Nami, Usopp and Chopper first accepted the invitation (from a bat), were attacked in the charriot and then after first enjoying the hospitality of the well educated Hogeback (who does have a bit of Vampire teeth) try to escape, only to find out they are trapped!

This video series has been my favourite One Piece analysis in the community, I so hope to see more of it in the future! I'm not at all experienced in classic literature, but I have heard someone compare Skypeia to Treasure Island, and there's definitely a lot of folk tales and history mixed in on top of that. Regardless of what the next one ends up being, I look forward to it!
Also, again, I'm no expert when it comes to classic Lit, but Dr Hogback's situation with Cindry always reminded me a bit of Dracula? It's so much more of a stretch than the references you brought up, though.

This blew my mind! Especially the details in the first book, The Island of Dr. Moreau!!
Now that you explained that story it also makes me think if that story had some influence for fullmetal alchemist. After all, the main character is also named Edward and deals with him confronting a doctor about his wicked/wrongful actions of forcibly creating chimeras from living things to “advance science” (i.e. shou tucker making his daughter nina into a chimera by forcing her with their dog alexander in FMA)

Not other novels, and I can't believe I didn't remember about The Castle of Otranto either, now I'm kicking myself for not having seen the OBVIOUS parallels with it, for crying out loud!! What I do have are a couple of parallels with other works, though.
    * The easiest one is in the name, Michael Jackson's Thriller.
    * Now, a few aesthetic references, Hogback's outfit is a clear reference to the Rocky Horror show musical (and The Rocky Horror Picture Show movie based on the musical) that takes inspiration from calss B horror movies from the 1930s, so you can count it as a double reference if you want. You also have heavy Tim Burton vibes, specially from his The Nightmare before Christmas, and Corpse Bride (one of the picture zombies is almost a copy-paste of one from that movie)
    * The disturbing bath scene with Absalom and Nami is aken from 1980s class B horror film The Entity
    * Absalom's design is a Wells sandwich, as it combines the Puma or the Leopard-Man from Dr. Moreau with The Invisible Man

What i wanted more than anything for the invisbility gag was for it to be turned on its head in WCI. Essentially that while Sanji says it's for peeping into girls' baths that the real truth was that that he wanted it to hide from his horrible family. I mean he said he wanted it since he was a little kid and I feel like Oda should have made that the real reason more than anything. Perosnally I think it is but I wishe Oda actually had it be clearly said in canon.

I think alot of the end game(mainly Imu) is going to reference alot of Lovecraftian elements and if you are familiar with Lovecraft he is essentially the "anti-oda" in terms of themes. Biggest clue to this is the fishmen.

She’s already spotted certain things and came up with points like the scar on Luffy’s face is to remind you that he is stupid because every time you look at that scar, you’re reminded he did that to himself. Or she caught on Raftel thing in Reverse Mountain? I highly recommend it. Are you sure you’re pronouncing the name of the woman right? Isn’t it typically pronounced “Heh-pollé-ta”, not “Hippo-lite-ah”?

i really thought it only references the scooby doo series because of all those gags.. this is very helpful since, as far as i know, no one is making this kind of video for onepiece

Thank you, Merphy! This was fascinating. I've never read any of the three books, and they sound good. I did see a movie of "The Island of Dr. Moreau," though. But, it was a silent film from the early 1900's, and the plot was somewhat different. (Btw, I hate to be nitpicky, so I don't want to say it. I hope that you know what I'm talking about.)
I love your videos about "One Piece," and I started watching your book discussion videos, as well. You have a bright smile and demeanor which is a joy to watch.
    Much love and blessings! 🤗❤️💖💜🙏

There's a book series you might like if you like gothic horror and YA. It's not super well written with beautiful prose, and it does read as gothic horror fanfiction mishmashing Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein, Moreau, Rappaccini's daughter, etc.
But it's *fun* and I loved it. It's an adventure series of all the women made by/involved with these mad scientists joining up and solving murder mysteries, essentially.
They're called The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, European Travel For the Monstrous Gentlewoman, and The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl.

The hommage to Michael Jackson's Thriller is also obvious. The name Kumasi (Peronas doll) is a city in Ghana. There are tons of secret references.

Someone really needs to make a complete compilation of all of oda's inspirations for one piece.
