Moriah is written as a failed version of luffy. A man who dreamed of being pirate king and made his way through the grandline but lost and was utterly devastated by the loss. Thats why he has shadow powers. He is literally a 'shadow' of his former self. Each one piece arc has a theme its attempting to convey using the powers of the villan as the main signifier. If you look back at past arcs you'll see what I mean, and look out for more clues like this in the future. Happy hunting+

One thing that I love about this series, is just how many “failed” Luffy’s are there.
Becoming the Pirate King is not easy. You must be mad to even try.
And many of the characters that we encounter, at some point or another did try to pull it off, but failed.
This arc has two of those.
Moria once was a promising up and comer. Who was crushed by another pirate, to the point, that he has even given up forming a real connection to people.
    The other is Brook.
While he didn’t try to become King, sailing the entire Grand Line is basically a requirement. And he failed. Everyone on that ship died.
The Rumba pirates are the norm. They are what happens if someone is insane enough to enter the GrandLine.
It’s not called the Pirates Grave for nothing.

    Brook's 45 degrees joke
"45" in Japanese can sound like "shigo", or "after death" (死後).
To expand on that, the Japanese word for four (四) can be pronounced as "shi", the same as the word for death (死). Completing the phrase, 5 (五) is pronounced as "go", making it so that 45 can sound like "shigo", which means "after death". Seeing as it's coming from a talking skeleton, that's pretty hilarious.

I think with this arc in particular, the manga is paced waaaay better. The anime really amps up the Scooby-Doo antics and were have like a third of the arc where they're just running around the castle avoiding wall zombies and watching them do the fake Thriller dance. It was cute, but it lasted way too long, and then you get tonal whiplash with the second half of the arc. The manga has a much more smooth transition and has tonal consistency. And not just them, early on you see how hogback dealt with losing cindry which was to cling onto her although she's already long gone, later on the shadows symbolize their dreams and how they deal when someone takes away their spirits that's how they all acted, like it's not an option to live without their dreams and as kuma is presented they have the actual representation of death... "If you would lose everything right now, where would be your paradise?" carrying a bible around... The book that preaches how everyone gets into paradise after their death, represents how all of the straw hats would die for their captain

I would add Perona to the character having a link with the whole "loss theme" of the arc.
(Potential spoiler WARNING, I don't know if the following element can be consider spoiler since it comes from SBS infos and vivre card and so far doesn't have an effect on the story).
We know since the "young version drawing" of Perona that during her childhood she had a pet bear called Kuma-a (kumae), then during the Moria pact panel with Hogback we can see her with a teddybear called Kuma-b (kumaby) and during Thriller Bark we of course have the bear-zombie Kuma-c (Kumacy).
That naming pattern, I think tend to show us that Perona still miss Kuma-a since he possibly passed away (I'm not sure if Kuma-a death was confirmed ) and the sorrow caused by this loss could be one of the reason that pushed Perona to join the thriller bark pirates at a young age. (Maybe Moria promised her to bring back her Kuma and make her all the "cute" zombie animal that she wanted with the medical skills of their soon-to-be doctor Hogback and his power )

  • @redx589
    @redx589 3 ปีที่แล้ว +243

    Thriller Bark is really underrated.
One thing thats commonly missed by most readers about this arc is how Thriller Bark is actually one big metaphor for depression. In this arc it’s specifically stated that Shadows are part of the soul. So Moria quite literally steals a piece of your soul and leaves you to forever hide in the Darkness. Never to step out into the light again. Light represents hope. Whats more, Moria himself is doing all of this because he himself is depressed. He crew was murdered. He sunk into the shadows, and now he drags others into the shadows of depression. Stealing their ability to stand in the light. To have hope.
So characters been living in the shadows, trapped in the deep dark bowels of depression. Unable to ever again see the light. Which has become like poison to them. Hope itself has become poison.
Certain moments become so much more powerful when read through this lens. Like Lola saying she refuses to live in the darkness(depression) anymore and chooses to cling to light(Hope) even knowing that hope may destroy her. Life comes with great pain and risk but you can't live in the darkness forever. Eventually, you have to come out of the shadows.
Brook’s final speech perfectly caps off the arc by encapsulating the entire story in a single sentence. “There was never a day that was easy, and I had given up all hope”. Summing up the experience of Thriller Bark in a nutshell. But after getting the piece of his soul that was missing, and being able to stand in the light again, Brook tells us, “I’m so glad to be alive”.
Not only is this beautiful storytelling but it’s also really shocking that One Piece is able to handle such a mature topic so seriously. Theres a genuine sincerity to the story and characters despite all the comedy and I don’t think most other writers could have pulled off perfectly blending comedy with such a tragic story.

I also love how fitting Moria is for this section of the series as the next saga has to teach Luffy to think about the consequences of his actions. Moria does not think about the consequences of his actions when going into the new world (he also hasn’t learned as shown when he invaded a Yonko’s territory to rescue absalom) and now he is a shadow of his former self.

    • @bayekofsiwa5847
      @bayekofsiwa5847 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

Please also note that Oda seamlessly connected Moria's story with his Shadow power. After all that happened to Moria's crew in the New World, he never again considered recruiting live crew members again. Instead, he heavily relied on his devil fruit to amass an army of zombies (which will never die). He, on the other hand, just lazed off day in and day out, letting his shadows do all the work for him. From a proud pirate declaring war against Kaido of all people to a depressed Shichibukai that just wants to oppress common folks to share his misery with them. He literally became a SHADOW of his former self.

"magic paper" Vivre card -- VEEV-ruh card
Glad you noticed the dichotomy of the two groups entering this haunted island. Also, glad you enjoyed the Luffy pushing the zombie scene. If you're not still following along with the anime, I'd recommend opening up an incognito tab (so it doesn't affect your recommended videos) and searching "thriller bark luffy zombie" to watch the scene animated.
"Ghost girl, shining star." Yes join in the love for Perona the Ghost Princess.
"I want my non-stakes please." Merphy would like her One Piece to be vegetarian style, please!
Fun thing about the samurai that carries Brooke's shadow and fought Zoro: he's the main character in a one-shot chapter that Oda wrote before One Piece. I believe it's called "Monsters."
While the Sanji stuff is disappointing, I'm really glad that we've gotten to a point in the series where you're excited to talk about Usopp. Our normal human has had some great scenes to shine in these few arcs.
Fun thing about Brook. He lived as a skeleton, alone on a ship, for about 50 years. His puns can be considered a form of coping that he told himself as he nearly went insane from loneliness. The perverted part of him can be uncomfortable, but also remember that he hasn't really seen a woman in that half century, so his filter might be a bit broken on what's appropriate to ask. Anyways, if you're not still following the anime, try looking up "Bink's Sake" in an incognito tab so that you can actually hear the song that Brook sings with his crew.
Merphy's about as excited for mermaids as Sanji.

A thing that is very interested about Moria is about how he become like this. If you pay attention to this arc, you can see that he is now just a shadow of his old self. It heavily imply from this arc that he use to have a different crew but he lost all of them in the fight with Kaido, one of the Four Emperor. This incident hurt him so much that he chose this path, the path that turn all his crew to zombie so that he won't lose any of them again. Oda don't show his backstory but you can pierce it together by the conversation in this arc

Brook's sense of humor and panties obsessions is for sure because of his having partially lost his mind from isolation for 50 years. Hes socially awkward and easy to excite and likes to make dumb unfunny jokes all because he hasnt interacted with ACTUAL LIVING PEOPLE in decades. Its an important part of his character to fully understand that. Music and Laboon were probably the only things that kept him going.

I've heard stories of male prisoners who, after being released from prison, acted weirdly or innapropriately around women purely because it had been so long since they had seen one as weird as that sounds so Brook asking women about their panties may be a side effect of those 50 years of loneliness and lack of companionship

When she said there was one scene that she really didn't like I immediately assumed it was going to be the scene where Absalom practically assaults Nami in the bath. So, I was surprised when it turned out to be the part where Sanji engages in the classic, almost ubiquitous, shounen trope of boys voicing their inner desires to peep on girls in the bath (but generally never succeeding in doing so). I guess, when seeing it from the point of view of someone who isn't desensitised to that particular trope, it is rather creepy and off-putting.
I'm finding that I really appreciate and enjoy her point of view on this series. I especially liked her idea that the things the characters said when affected by the negative ghosts revealed aspects of their personality that they would usually keep to themselves. I'd never though of it that way, but it made sense and I liked it.
I'm looking forward to more great One Piece reviews.

Well Absaloms scene is creepy, he's a villain and is set up to be so, so we get excited for Sanji to beat his ass.....
Only to find out Sanji wanted to do the same thing, which is not only very disappointing, actively goes against how Sanji has been set up the ENTIRE series so far. He was always portrayed as someone who LOVES women and is chivalrous to a fault, which was beat into him by Zeff, so it's also a trait that leads back to his respect of his father figure. It's a fault of his, but one based on good intentions and how he was taught.

Theres a bit of a misreading there with Sanji's situation which is understandable since it's your first viewing. You're still totally allowed to dislike it but I want to clarify a few things.
The Theme of this arc is "Shadows". Each of the strawhats opponents this arc is a shadow(a dark reflection) of themselves. Chopper a Doctor, faces off against a dark Doctor one who neglects the Doctor's oath(hippocratic oath) and disrespects life. The difference between them being that Chopper protects and preserves life while Hogback abuses it. Usopp who is negative faces off against Perona who uses the power of negativity. Though while Perona uses her power of negativity to drag others down, Usopp uses his negativity to keep his crew safe from dangers they would have otherwise ignored. Sanji and Absolom are both lustful. Absolom is the dark side of Lust. He forces himself onto women without their consent and ignores their well being. Even going so far as to put their lives at risk for his own desires. He's a literal perverted Beast. Whereas Oda is showing that Sanji is the opposite. He may be filled with lust from time to time but he always puts a woman's well being above his own and would never force himself on a woman like Absolom does. This is symbolically shown in the scene where he holds Nami above himself while he takes damage. Literally putting her well being above himself. Oda is not saying that they're the same but rather highlighting how they are different. Next is Zoro vs Ryuuma. You may not know this but Ryuuma was once the world's greatest swordsman. So this battle is one of the Former world's greatest swordsman vs the Future world's greatest swordsman. The difference between them being that Ryuuma's spirit is not his own. The shadow of someone else guides his blade. So he isn't one with his sword like Zoro is. Zoro willingly carries Kuina's spirit through his blade but Ryuuma's is forced to move by Brook's.
Last is Luffy & Moria. Both are men who sought to become Pirate King but Ever since he was crushed by Kaido, Moria has grown lazy. This makes him weak. He's literally become a shadow of his former self. Just like his power. Whereas Luffy knows he needs a strong reliable crew to support him on the path to Pirate King but unlike Moria, Luffy is willing to give it his all for his crew while Moria doesn't put in any effort at all. Making others do everything for him.

I dont think its so bad as much as its just part of japanese culture that we americans just dont get. In a culture where at one point baths were shared and nudity wasnt a big deal till the 1800's when the west tried to shame Japan for not having Christian sensibilities about sex and in the 1950's when America came in and Mcarthy with all his conservative prude sensibilities basically censored all nudity. We also neglect how their cultural attitudes are around nudity since they have always had and still have open floor shared public baths.
In that cultural context "perverts" are not seen as in the same way in other places. Really think about how our attitudes would change around nudity and peeking on people if we had shared baths, inevitably people would peek, especially teen boys, and our reactions would be less extreme over time. Just look at how social media and cell phones have changed how we treat nudity in just 15 years.....just compare only fans in 2021 compared to myspace in 2005 or reality tv from those two years..
edit: I just saw the scene yall were talking about and i was wrong that was super cringey. I thought yall were talking about the peeking while invisible in the shared baths and the way they treat perversion in general in japan.

    NO SPOILERS
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but Brook and Moria are good foils to one another.

Both lost their crews- Moria in the past was an ambitious pirate who, as a result of engaging in a bloody battle with the Emperor Kaido, tragically led his entire crew to their untimely deaths.

Brook lost his crew to the merciless grandline, where destructive weather, sudden sickness, and enemy pirates plague every island and every corner of the sea.

They both lost their crews, but the way they dealt with their trauma is different.

Moria decided to close himself off and not bond with any new crew member, opting instead to “raise the dead”, perhaps to compensate for failing his crew (as a captain, he recklessly got them killed in a duel with one of the emperors).

Brook instead chose to retain hope that one day he would reunite with laboon and also at the end of the arc when he asks Luffy if he could join the strawhats, he broke into joyful tears when he realized he was able to live long enough to find new friends, to embark on yet another adventure.

“I’m so happy I’m still alive!”

Never would he have thought these words were true. For 50 years he had only the bones of his friends to accompany him. Living must’ve been one endless depressing state of loneliness.

But in the end, Brook never gave up on living. He had hope that he could reunite with Laboon, and he was rewarded with Luffy’s arrival into his life.

He didn’t know it then, but for 50 years he was waiting for new friends with whom he could travel the world again.

That wedding scene is pretty infamous in the fandom. One thing I'd like to point out as far as Sanji's characterization: when Sanji voices or acts on negative behaviors around women there are negative outcomes to those interactions, and when Sanji is honest and open with women there are positive outcomes to those interactions. This remains pretty consistent throughout One Piece. I think Oda uses each member of the crew to commentate on certain things indirectly.
