The thing about it is that the opening rap fits so much better for the battle-oriented arcs like Enies Lobby & Marineford than a lot of the other openings.
The original rapper even made an expanded version that includes Robin, Franky, Brook, & Jinbe.

I remember the difference watching as an adult. As a child, I always felt like I missed an episode somewhere. It never occurred to me about censorship till a few years after 4kids stopped.
Then I buy the series in the form of Funimation DVDs to start watching with my ex, who is now still a close anime friend, and as the series goes on, I'm just emotionally gutted day after day in front of my girl. Luckily for me, she liked that sensitive shit, but I remember bawling my eyes out openly the first time I saw that scene.
I think if 4kids had made it to the Robin Arc, they would have just quit or ruined it. Thankfully, Funimation did it SOME justice (detracted for a million repeats of "I want to blah, blah, blah" and full episodes of flashbacks). I got to observe my ex, who was adopted, resonate deeply with the thought of whether her bio parent left her out of love or selfishness. Literally felt her emotions radiating off of her like a tangible, fuck-science-fiction actual aura of personal distress. I felt it BEFORE I looked at her.
That kind of impact can only happen when you aren't trying to soften the blows.

Captain Chaser and Trace Heatfist will always hold a special place in my heart.). Lol. Australian Shanks, French Mihawk, Bad Brooklyn Accent Sanji....truly a work of art. Sanji's attack names give me joy as well (if you haven't, look up a compilation of them on TH-cam. Its both physically painful and absolutely hilarious.). The fact that 4kids Sanji has an attack named "Leg o'Wham Drumstick Supreme" is perhaps the greatest thing that dub ever did. 😂
Oh, and then there are the Zoro moments. Not just the iconic "Oh hey Luffy, how you doing buddy......LUFFFFFFYYYYYY!!!!!" blood-curdling screech from Whiskey Peak, but the random animal impressions he would do sometimes. Like when we was calling Usopp a chicken (I think he did this at LEAST twice), and that one time he literally BARKED at Daz Bones when they fought in Alabasta. 😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣

4Kids is a guilty pleasure of mine. Because I loved One Piece pretty much from the start. I have two kids and one day when they were still little I was watching it and they were interested. I knew the main series wasn't age appropriate for them at the time. So I watched 4Kids with them they loved it and I tolerated it when they were awake. But it was something we bonded over and when they were older I let them watch the mainline series and read the manga. They still love the series, and it is something we can talk about together and bond over. If I ever have grandkids I'll watch the 4Kids with them as well and see if they like it as well.
As a parent of small kids who loves One Piece 4Kids was irreplaceable for me at the time, and I have fond memories of enjoying it with them, which is why sometimes I'll start watching it even though my oldest is grown up and my youngest isn't far off from grown up. If you are a One Piece fan with small kids and you want to share your passion for One Piece with them then 4Kids is a good jumping off point for it.

My little brother and I really bonded over it and eventually we wanted to watch the "real" version so we roped our dad into watching it with us. Over time high school got so busy (and the animation got so bad) that we all began reading the manga on our own time. Now we're adults, my brother and I both have partners who we've introduced to One Piece, and on Sundays we get together for dinner and discuss the new chapter. When the Netflix series came out our mom even started to be introduced to the series too! One Piece has honestly been a huge part of my entire family's life for 20 years. Wild how we've gone from 4KIDS to the now current, faithful dub being only like 30 eps behind the sub release because One Piece has been airing so long it's outlasted how anime is actually sold and marketed to a western audience haha
Also fun fact, a couple of the 4KIDS voice actors who are fairly prolific now in their own careers, have minor roles/cameos in the current dub. 4KIDS Luffy voices Miss Buckingham Stussy (she plays a lot of old ladies in cartoons and other anime like Pokemon so it really fits), 4KIDS Chopper voices the Sunny in Film Red, etc...

I used to watch 4Kids Saturday mornings every week, alternating between it and KidzWB depending on what show was airing on either channel at the time. So when I was 14 One Piece premiered in August 2004 on 4Kids (at the time known as the FoxBox) it was my very first exposure to the series and I…. I can’t lie, I fell in love with it immediately. From Luffy’s first gum gum rocket I felt in my soul that this series was something special that I would be connected to on a spiritual level. Of course as I got deeper into the series and as I matured I realized how utterly horrendous the 4kids dub is not just as an adaptation, but as an overall product, yet I cannot bring myself to even mildly dislike it. It is what brought me into the greatest story of all time and still had just enough spark of that magic for me to recognize that. So I’ll insult it, make fun of it, laugh it off, but I will never ever hate it or give it any undue disrespect. Without it there would be no One Piece in my world.

Also i was watching you since Harry potter content, was excited when you did avatar and absolutely thrilled for one piece content.

This was my gateway and also one of the reasons i dropped the series as i grew older. I found naruto to be much more adult and edgy. But when i was young i loved it. I called my mom at work one day, and she didnt answer, so i left her a message. It was the whole 4kids rap. That she showed to her whole department at work. Eventually like 15 years later i tried to collect all the dbz dvds and they sent me season 1 and 2 of one piece instead and they let me keep them while send me the dvd box sets as well. Decided to watch them and then the pandy hit and i binged everything in like 6 months. Best series ever.

I feel like “it reads…” is one of those idioms that has successfully infiltrated common lexicon, ‘cause I’ve heard several people use it when not talking about books. Even when referring to someone’s speech or their opinion on something. Definitely feels at home when describing a cartoon or any form of multimedia.

    Actually, Yes.
Me and my brother got into One Piece from the 4kids Dub. We didnt know, we were kids, it was on, we thought it was cool.
We both stopped as we got older, wrote it off as a kids cartoon that ended.
Upon finding it again, seeing the changes, and learning how much of the story expands...I had to get back in...and eventually got my brother back too
All that to say, 4kids rap still holds up today LOL

I had the pleasure of the 4Kids dub being my first exposure to One Piece. Watched it as a Saturday morning cartoon along with the Dragon Ball Z Kai dubs and Pokemon.
It led to some interesting experiences. I pronounced "Zolo" with an L for years, started watching subbed and had to get used to Zoro, then started reading the manga and had to get used to seeing Zolo again in print.
I did have to relearn character backstories.
Basically, it just warranted a rewatch from the beginning. Also, "Sanji's cooking, Chopper's doctoring" is straight bars and you can't change my mind.

The 4Kids dub was unfortunately my gateway into the series. I couldn't make it passed the start of episode two. I had friends who loved One Piece and praised both the manga and the anime, and I just couldn't figure out why. When I told one friend I'd watched the first episode and dropped it after the title card of the second episode, she immediately asked what adaptation I had seen. When I said it was the 4Kids episode that was airing, she was like "Nope! Stop! You're coming over tomorrow and we're binging the fansubs." We marathoned right up to Nami asking Luffy for help, and I became a fan that weekend. Had my friend not stepped up, I would have never given the series a second chance and wouldn't be a weekly manga reader who's deeply invested in knowing about the Void Century.

Yeah this kinda was my gateway to One Piece. I watched it every day before school when I was a little kid and thought it was pretty cool but nothing special. All I remembered about it was the theme song but otherwise thought nothing of it.
Then years later in my senior year of high school some friends of mine asked If I "watched/ read One Piece?" And I said "Oh yeah, I remember watching that show, it had a catchy theme song but that's all I remember" and they were like "Dude, don't tell me you watched the 4kids dub..." to which I said "now that you mention it, that's probably not how the original is huh?" And then I spent like 4 months watching the then 450 or so episodes that were available and got fully caught up and re-educated to what One Piece ACTUALLY was and how amazing it is!
Simply put: The 4kids dub was so dumbed down that it barely stayed in my mind and felt like nothing special and if it wasn't for my friends properly showing me One Piece; to this day I might have still thought of it as just a dumb, simple kids show.

What's truely nutty about One Piece's censorship is that I swear the 2000s Shaman King anime was nearly untouched in terms of implications of death.
Shaman King is mostly about bringing the souls of the dead into battle, so one victor can become The Shaman King.

Okay, removing death, this. Replacing Laboon with an iceberg (Not Ice-Pops) that.
What about 4Kids just flat-out skipping Little Garden? Our introduction to the Giants of Elbaf?
Skipping this very short arc affects the following stuff in the long-run:
    - One of Usopp's goals he wants to accomplish on his quest to become a brave warrior of the sea
    - Introduction to Mr 3 (who's one of the key players in Impel Down and Marineford. seriously, I think they just haphazardly throw in some dialogue as to why he's chasing the crew and has beef with them in the 4Kids adaptation that doesn't even make any sense in canon)
    - Oimo and Kashi's heel-face turn against the World Government during Enies Lobby
    - The New Giant Warrior Pirates allying themselves with the Straw Hat Grand Fleet after Dressrosa
    - Everything involving Big Mom's backstory in WCI
    - *JoyBoy's origins and the legend of Sun God Nika*

I had the fortunate situation that I am not American lol As someone from Latin America, our dubs were literal translations and they went all out with the voice acting. Also, no censorship!! I was spoiled before coming to the US. Then learning what a lot of kids grew up with as anime, it sent me for a loop! And then I went straight to subs, and never looked back (except for some anime that I don't mind like Code Geass or Trigun).

I watched it when it aired on Saturday mornings 20 years ago. I think it was part of the 4Kids Fox block and I had been an anime fan for a long time even then, but I couldn't figure the show out. I had paged through a few issues of the manga in comic stores, but the show didn't seem to fit what I had read. Still, it introduced me to the anime and less than a decade later I binged the first 300+ Yibis episodes via Nyaa and fell in love with the series, anime and manga. I genuinely enjoy the One Piece Rap these days. It's up there with the Pokémon Roll Call song and "Fighting evil by moonlight..."

My introduction to one piece was me staying up on a Saturday night at some point in middle school while they were reruning the series on toonami and my first episode was Franky's introduction in Water 7, where everyone is groaning about him showing up and are yelling at him to leave and not bothered him and then he gets into a fight with Luffy, I thought he was so cool and yeah he is I was right but after his introduction I had watched all of water 7, Enies Lobby, and Thriller Bark every Saturday night, giller episodes and all and boy was it such a fun experience, they're still may favorite arcs because of that

I don't remember the 4kids version well enough when I started watching this in 2004... but in 2009 after graduating hs I went on a nostalgia trip and watched old anime shows I was into as a kid. Starting with dragon ball, then yu yu, then inuyasha, then case closed and after watching these shows I was thinking what was that one show where the guy wanted to become king of the pirates. I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the series. What I did remember was "hes made of rubber, how did that happen? Yo ho ho he took a bite of gum gum" so I youtubed that, came up with One Piece. Typed in One Piece English dub episode 1 into TH-cam and all 195 episodes of one piece that were dubbed in English by funimation was available on TH-cam at the time and that's how I got into it. Since thats all the episodes that were on youtube and that were dubbed when i decided to binge watch the show I thought it was only going to be 195 episodes long. 😂😂😂😂😂 So, if it wasn't for the 4kids dub and their rap I probably wouldn't be here right now typing this.
