I'll have to disagree on the hat pass-off. I really love how Kid Luffy's actor slowly chokes up and starts crying and how Shanks softly places the hat on his head, kinda goofy-ly as it covers his face, but sweetly as well. He doesn't just smack the hat on him, he just gently passes it off because Luffy is just a sweet boy who's going to miss him and the hat itself is something precious.

  • @melodydiagames
    @melodydiagames ปีที่แล้ว +85

The scenes with Shanks losing his arm, and passing on the hat absolutely worked for me personally. The moment the music started to turn after Luffy stopped hugging Shanks, letting the viewer know both thru it and Luffy's expression that SOMETHING was wrong, was so good.
I'm honestly shocked that you barely even touched on the show's music, other than Bink's Sake. I feel like the music is such a big character in this show. The soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal, and really adds so much to every scene.

I think something that's missed a lot is when Shanks discovers Luffy ate the devil fruit. Luffy is standing there with the sun directly behind him with the swelling music. That's such a great nod to people who are caught up to the story.
As for the Shanks losing his arm, and the passing the hat off scenes.. I think they hit. Obviously not as well, but they were more quiet intimate moments. They weren't the typical anime/manga striking scenes. But a more mellow, this moment is just between Shanks and Luffy. As a kid, for me it was never the loud moments, but the quiet ones that impacted me.

Yeah! I actually preferred this Nami indoctrination over the one in the Manga. It wasn’t bad or anything, but in the Manga she did a lot more hesitating and running around (mostly because she had more time to do that), and it felt a little like she was fighting every step of the way. She obviously comes around- but I feel like this romance dawn trio is a lot more in sync from the get-go and Nami’s inner conflict over it is more obvious. Or hey- maybe it’s just that the faster pacing pushes a lot of the subtext forward, lol.

My only issue with the scene with the rice ball girl is that when she gives it to Zoro while he was captured, he was starving and needed it to survive. She kinda showed the heart and bravery of the town while Helmeppo stomping it shows the depravity of the navy base. We still get those themes, but maybe a little less impactful for me. Also Luffy won over the entire marine base the first time aside from Helmeppo and Morgan, so I wish there could have been a little more of that shown. These are obviously nitpicks. I am loving the show so far 4 episodes in.

    • @J-manli
      @J-manli ปีที่แล้ว +12

I would argue that the LA base fight is more to demonstrate not only Nami's, Zoro's, and Luffy's individual fighting prowess, but their compatibility as well. And overall the LA's powerscaling is toned down by a lot both for pacing and studio logistics. But I do agree that the riceball girl didn't get enough screen time to flesh out Zoro's empathy and the marine's cruelty.

Shows more it’s importance and how luffy felt drawn to consume it, nods to what we as readers know now in terms of the fruits having a will of their own. I thought that moment may have been portrayed even better than in the original giving that when ODA first wrote romance dawn he didn’t know how far to take the series. Also want to point out the gag where luffy is talking about zoro and says (I’m paraphrasing) “ I love his sword fighting! I just wonder where the third one goes 👀” and then later when Zoro does his three sword style and puts the third in his mouth luffy reacts and says “AH! so that’s where it goes!” Made my brothers and I laugh and have to pause the screen for a moment

i REALLY loved peter gadiot as shanks, i think he really captured east blue shanks’ presence. i laughed at him so badly in one scene later in the season that i rewatched it so many times. HOWEVER flashback didn’t do much for me either. and i think it’s because 1) they didn’t really have time to show us that “!!!!” 2) i really get why boat was still there but i think the main responsible is the fact that they were still on the boat and shanks was not holding luffy and saving his life from not only the sea king but also drowning 3) i think the makino-shanks dynamics were missing and it really helped us in manga to see shanks in a “ohh the kind normal lady and that pirate are so nice together” - which affected shanks’ situation in live action

It makes the world feel so rich and expansive in its narrative that we’re not just biased to one point of view the entire series.

Instead of the manga/anime, where Shanks loses it to a narrow dodge, saving Luffy in the water. Because why would the Sea King not just try to swallow the rowboat whole???

We didn’t get the “I ran in a childish direction” line but it was a great throw little line that shows the writing team is aware of those moments and did their best to fit hints and nods towards them. That is quality adaptation imo especially since a lot of running around is cut for the LA so we wouldn’t have gotten a moment like that otherwise

Koby’s portrayal by Morgan Davies is my most favourite in the whole show because of the crazy detail in his little movements. The little hesitant stutters when he talks, his nervous/fragile body language especially when he sits with Garp, he looks like he’s caving in on himself from the pressure of the moment. Even his eyes convey sooo many emotions sad/uncertain/uncomfortable/determined/sympathetic/empathetic…my god what a masterful performance!
The scene when Zoro (sort of) escalates the tension with Helmeppo was a little out of character imo, as it would’ve been better if he just remarked to Helmeppo non-chalantly telling him that the girl knocked into him by accident “don’t be such a baby”, says Zoro, then Helmeppo gets that emotional blow which in turn forces him to draw-out his sword to fight Zoro.
Also Captain Morgan’s portrayal was incredible, he looks like an actual imposing figure to be feared but also balances to the comedy of being fooled by Nami and Luffy.

For me, Nami is by far my favourite Character in the whole show and Sanji's backstory was by far the best part of the Series and the last scene. For me, the show lacked some more ivolvement of some of the side characters like Nojiko or Genso. Some of the acting, the designs and most importanly those constant close up shots were soo cheesy what I didn't like but some of the nods like the bounties or Mr7. were great. The thing is: 8 epsiodes can NEVER be enough in order to get attached to characters. I like some of the interactions but oevrall some of them were just so rushed and 'un-organic". The soul of OP was captured tho and that's what I wanted. I want to like it more but I went into it with not so high expectations and atleast it wasn't underwhelming. But for the casting, I honestly love the cas. From their looks, everyone was 10/10 tho everyone lacked little details for me, except for Nami. Seriously, Emily Rudd showed that she understood Nami's character. Episode 6.. The entire stretch of post zoro-Mihawk plot and the theme of being a captain taking tough decisions... and Sanji's backstory were the 10/10.
The entire sequence of Zoro in well- flashback .. was also really really well done.
Ep 2 of Buggy is also great.. Buggy literally stole the show.
Coby and Helmeppo had the best performances for side characters.
Strawhats are all great...but wanted to see more emphasis on Ussop..
      Zoro-Sanji dynamic was great.
The subtle gags on Zoro were chef's kiss.
I enee up liking Garp by the end... Only in episode 8 we'll understand they actually didn't deviate much for Garp's character... And in fact it was pretty much loyal to the Garp's character in the manga.
Arlong is actually intimidating in the show, unlike the trailers.
My main issue was Nami's backstory could've been lot better if only it was 2-3 min longer.
And they really did bad with Nojiko and Gen san's character by making them n villagers unaware of the truth.
Nami in denial and desperation accepting that she'll do it all again to protect everyone and then Gen san consoling her... Then the help me... That sequence in animanga was powerful. I donno why they had to change the fact that Nojiko and Gen san were aware of the truth. This is my only main issue. Otherwise it's near perfect for what it's trying to be..as an adaptation and a TV show.

If you want the chapter of his execution its chapter 1 and chapter 506. Similarly, he never called himself the pirate king . Its the news who did (Morgan in chapter 967). So these "name" are not part of the mystery surrounding the treasure and are name given by external source. They most likely don't have a connection to what is hidden at Raftel.

One thing I really like about this is Koby. They took a creative turn to actually use KOBY in the early story when it's clear that they probably won't be getting to water 7, so instead of introducing him and us just never seeing him again after 1 ep they decided to keep him relevant to the story like buggy which is smart, it kinda makes him a true second main character early on rather than having all that main character energy be dropped onto him like in the recent manga. Although I do wish we saw more of him training and doing some action bits, what we got was still okay and his actor was SPOT ON, his interactions with luffy at the beginning sorta fell a bit flat to me but everything else was fantastic. This is the kind of stuff I want to see in LA's, not a soulless one to one adaptation that tries to be "modern" and is just basically a cash grab, but one that can change and adapt a story to make it work in their situation.

My rating is 7/10. Because I didn't felt zoro hanging scene. They could've made that so dane important scene but no random girl randomly offering him onigiri (rice ball) that felt lazy. Still a good adaptation

Agreed. I think the correct rating is a 7 or 8. I thought it was an 8 after my first watch, but I get overhyped at times so it’s probably a 7 lol.
It was much better than I was expecting, and genuinely very enjoyable, but some aspects were lacking and there’s still work to be done. I think if they can build off of what worked and what didn’t, we could genuinely get a 9/10 or (dare I say) even 10/10 season 2 with the Alabasta saga.

on the zoro recruitment, i love that every time Zoro declined an invite he got met with violence or confrontation. W mr 7 sword fight, with morgan he gets tied up. But when he first refuses Luffy, luffy just frees him and goes "ok"

The thing about Shanks arm and passing the hat scene being great is Manga readers are just drawn to the panel, they just let it stay in the moment and connect more. The directors were saying how to translate a 2D to LA, but yeah they can make it pause, like the world going white behind.
Nonetheless it still worked for me.

A small thing that I loved was that Koby trying to hide on the boat and Luffy just walking around like he doesnt care because he doesn't.

Well that's the thing : Roger never called "his" treasure the "One Piece" in the manga.
They called it "Hito-tsunagi no Dai-hihō" after his execution, which can be translated by "the great hito-tsunagi treasure" . The exact meaning of "hito-tsunagi" has not yet been clarified to this day. Just like with Laugh Tale becoming Raftel, many believe the treasure we call "One Piece" has a different name/signification in japanese. The library of Ohara explained it better than I can.

There will be another nod back to the "great fighters shouting their finishing moves" thing much later in the series. And in that one, I was extremely satisfied.

The most interesting thing for this show will be to see what changes oda makes with the hindsight of 20+ years of writing. Like if he knew from the start how big the world would get I am sure he would have liked to introduce certain characters or ideas earlier. Making garp an early cast member is a good choice imo for that reason.

I've binged the entire show in one sitting, it was such a fantastic ride !
There's certainly some weaker moments, but nothing I would call "bad" that wasn't also a bit tedious in the anime/manga. Some of the more action-y scenes were superb in live action, without spoilers, I nerd-screamed at one particular Mihawk scene ;D
They nailed every emotional beat, every action beat, and the reworks they did to the pacing flow so seamlessly that I had to double take to see if that wasn't the way it happened in the manga too haha !
I would have absolutely no issue in rewatching this show to see my non-One Piece fan friends' reaction.
In fact, I'll probably do that this weekend
I am so grateful for this adaptation, thank you to everyone involved in the project

I think the season was as good as it could get. The fishmen took a while to get used to, but story-telling wise, they took the best route they could for an adaptation. Bunch of easter eggs, bunch of foreshadowing, excellent acting by the main cast. I loved it! Really hope they green light further seasons

I'm new to One Piece, never watched the anime or read the manga, but I loved this live action version. Binged the whole thing in one day, and can't wait for season 2. Loved the goofy parts and how they are balanced by the really dark stuff, and Luffy is just a great character.

I agree the Sea King scene was a bit flat, probably due to the fact they were in a boat. There was a sense of security in their danger. The hat passing scene felt more emotional in the live action for me but less powerful and I think it’s because it’s done in private. It’s not a loud outburst in front of the crew, which made Shank’s decision to give him his hat more meaningful to me. Overall, things are looking up for this adaptation!

I think a big thing that made luffys flashback not land is just the fact that a child actor is not gonna be able to portray the raw emotion that oda draws on the face of children and especially a kid like luffy.

Yass I'm early. I love that the series is its own thing but at the same time giving us fans Easter eggs here and there. I'm curious about what people who don't know OnePiece or never read and watch think about it. Love Buggy, Helmeppo & Alvida. Not entirely buying Shanks' portrayal.
