- Today we're testing a set of Schmincke Akademie Watercolor Paints I bought on Ali Express.
Are they real of fake? Did I get a great deal or did I get duped? That's what we'll find out!
Buying watercolor supplies on AliExpress may be a bit of a gamble but the price is too tempting not to take that risk. Today we're going to find out if it paid off.

I watch a Phillipino WC artist channel. He said that they buy the exspensive professional paints like Schminke in the tubes, then sell it in half pans to make money off of it. He said it offers artists an opportunity to buy pans for much less than full tubes, while helping the investor pay for their investments. Makes sense.
You're probably right about the paints originating in tubes. But it's probably the professional Horadam line or another Schminke line that comes in tubes.
They definately look close. I wouldn't use them for anything I wanted to last just to be sure. Maybe try using a black light on them to see if there's any differences? Some dyes used to brighten cheaper paints (and sometimes more expensive ones) glow under a black light. I would say it could be a second test. Nice find though.

They are real. When a company manufacturers in China they surrender all r&d and schematics in exchange for cheap labor. China can have cheap labor because they don't have a minimum wage; therefore, their standard of living doesn't increase. Western Vivian have minimum wages tensor right out of the manufacturing game. Anyway, part of the trade deal allows cia to sell the exact same products at a fraction of the price, but must absolutely adhere to the original schematics for the product. For example: if you buy a Parker fountain pen made in China you are getting the same exact material, same exact pen as the one made in the USA. You're just paying less for it.
I tested them with the black light, and none of them glow 😊

This is really interesting! Several ArtTubers say that what we see on screen isn't exactly what they see in person (they can see the difference in their own screens), and the camera is more sensitive to differences than the naked eye (Miranda Watson's lightfast tests are an example). This is a case in point, I think.
I can see noticeable differences, especially in the blues and greens. *but* what is interesting is that overall, I prefer the Ali Express on what I am seeing here.
Another *but* is that according to ArtTubers doing comparisons, Schmincke Akademie is generally considered a poor student grade when compared with others.
Miranda? Alkali Creek.
However, what is far, far more important -si- is that you love what is in that pretty box, and that you feel it is well worth what you spent on it!!! That is a big , big *WIN!!!!* from my perspective. Just don't expect them to be lightfast, unless you do some testing for yourself to see, and find that they are. (Again, check out Miranda for how to do that!)

All of the original Schminke Horadam half pans in my collection are in branded half pans. The pans have Schminke cast in to the bottom of the pan. Granted they are older but it would be something that I would check.

I have seen people seeling these sets of more expensive watercolors also "privately" and on Etsy and always wondered if they are genuine. While I think a lot of these are (especially those sold from private persons), I am afraid that the other user is right and there are no Schmincke Akademie colors sold in tubes. I am from Germany and bought most of my Schmincke watercolors (both Horadam and Akademie) from private sellers "secondhand". As far as I can see they are all genuine and you can save a lot! I would say it's probably not really worth to buy Schmincke Akademie, better try to find good deals for Horadam instead. As a student grade I actually prefer van Gogh that come in 10ml tubes which are really affordable where I live. Just to give my two cents 😂

I checked out the shop. Its repackaged Schminke. I also found a couple of ebay stores that sell the Schminke or other exspensive professional brands like Holbein and Daniel Smith repackaged in small .5 ml, 1ml & 2ml pans. I love the whole concept.

Reminds me of cheap knock off sports cars in high school. Outside may look nice till the door falls off or the muffler. Only good thing was the engine 😆

I would NEVER buy brand name art supplies from Ali Express or Temu....especially Temu. No...
They are the original just hand poured from tubes by the seller.
