Veridian is great for mixing it is like a base color which is not pretty by itself but gosh the mixes you can make with it. Try it with browns, reds, blues.
Thank you for the review! I was wondering about this little palette...:) You didn't like the first green. I can understand, at first glance it is an awful color. I didn't use it for years....and then I started mixing colors with it and I was blown away. Such unexpected and beautiful results. I can highly recommand it. Magenta and Viridian make a stunning clear purple for example. I didn't see that one coming. Love how you rendered the water. So beautiful, soft and alive.
yes ... viridian is very very useful for mixing a lot other colors with each other color in your palette. there is so much possible in the hole range between and you can make other not so pretty colors more useful with a tiny little bit of viridian ... for more shadows and deepness - muted red, or reddish for examble ... green is a redkiller and can be useful to neutralize any red, or redish undertones incl. best lightfastness and it is also transparent ... maygreen contains often yellow and the viridian-phthalo pg7 pigment ... or with orange you can get a pretty olivegreen, and so on. I´m thinking a tiny little bit can also be helpful, for mixing skintones because this will neuralize to much red. try it out :D
My daughter recieved one of these for her birthday. It’s really a solid little palette & their student grade paints are just fine. I love it & might get one of my own. Love how it can slip into a pack.
Gorgeous painting! What a unique shape the palette has. Thanks for doing a proper painting to test them out, it gives a much better feel for the performance than just swatching! Just subscribed
@@manalwatercolorartist I was about to reply that this is not a new or unique palette, but imo quite practical with the lots of separated mixing wells. Seems to be a good choice for urban sketching too, with magnets it can nicely be fixed on the top of a sketchbook.
I have this box in a special edition with Horadam paints from a U.K. art store, It was irresistible, I just love the box. The colour choice is different from yours. I would have bought the Academie if it had been the only choice, just for the tin! Nice to see the paint out, they are a lot better than I would have thought. Really nice to see you working and nice video too. Really lovely painting.
@@manalwatercolorartist I don't like the student winsor and newton either and most reviews have said they are not great paints.I love the schminke and even the student grade is great I prefer them over sennelier Loved the video have subbed from the uk
I didn't know this palette existed as it might be difficult to find one here in india.. i lovee mini palettes ❤ Thank you for introducing it to us I'll try to find this one in art stores now 💕🙌✨
Your painting turned out stunning! It looks pretty vibrant considering the swatches were a bit disappointing. I wish you would have shared your thoughts on the paint after you finished the painting. I love the shape of the palete but I wish there was space for a brush. Then it'd be perfect for traveling. The shape of the palette is the reason I clicked on this video. I don't even really love the Horadam line, so I've never tried any of the Akademie paints. I think they're way too expensive considering there's brands like White Nights.
I'm so glad to see your review of this Schmincke Akademie set! Your painting is beautiful! If I could make one suggestion, when you're speaking, turn down the music because it's competing with your lovely voice.
I couldn't find a proper answer nowhere what the exact difference between the HORADAM and AKADEMIE watercolors where so i just contacted Schmincke directly. And here what they answered - i'm german so i just put this through a translator and hope it makes sense :D "Both watercolor grades are made with high quality artist pigments and gum arabic base. The manufacturing process is also identical (the pigments are finely painted on a three-roller and the color is then poured in liquid form). The big difference between the two grades is the selection of pigments (traditional artists' pigments such as cadmium or cobalt pigments are only used in HORADEM AQUARELL) and their concentration. Furthermore, a natural wetting agent (ox gall) is used in HORADEM AQUARELL and a synthetic one in AKADEMIE Watercolor."
my understanding is that the akademie or typical student grades, have less pigment and more gum arabic to fillers than the artists quality do. also lightfastness might be different.
This is one palette I regret not buying when it was readily available to me - a bit too expensive for what it is imo, but I'm a sucker for unusual palette designs! I like the separated mixing spaces in the lid - not very large, but I only paint fairly small anyway so I never need huge puddles. If I find it again, I'm definitely buying it 😅
I wish I saw the finished painting! The images for other videos were already on the screen before you showed it. It would have been great to hear your thoughts/opinion at the end, too.
Like you I do like to mix my own greens. Less pigmented paints are what I would expect from "student grade" sets. You seemed to manage just fine regardless.
In my experience, the difference between the student quality (Akademie) and the professional line (Horadam) is much smaller than in many other brands. I use both and in many colors, I can't tell the difference at all. They are produced the same way, with gum arabic binder and poured into the pans. It's mostly that the number of colors offered in the Akademie line is much smaller and some poisonous pigments (like cadmium) are replaced by hues.
May I ask why you don’t keep your water on the right side of your work so you don’t have to risk dripping your wet brush onto your painting? I’ve seen many TH-camrs keep the water on the left side and am curious if there’s a reason why.
That's a really cool form factor/shape. I don't think I would buy Akademie though because where I live, it is as expensive as some professional watercolors. I would rather buy Qor tubes or Roman Smzal (my favorites, and I've tried Daniel Smith, Winsor and Newton, Holbein, M Graham, and one color of Schmincke). I love all of the ones I listed, but for the art I do, there's just something very special about the colors I have from those two brands. I wish I had the entire Roman Smzal collection.
The schmincke colours might sometimes have a film on top so you need to use more water and might take longer to get the first colours out... painting them very fast with little to no actual paint on the brush will make them look bad of course... I have the akademie set and they are more pigmented than this
No problem. Ive also noticed that upon buying akademie open stock some colours are a lot more pigmented and I have no idea why.. I bought now a new prussian blue half pan and they look different and more pigmented I wonder if the sets have either worse batches or they are purposefully worse than buying open stock akademie?
I love my Schmincke Akademie - I have the 24 pan set, and the colors are gorgeous. I've never seen a palette like that one before. That's a beautiful painting you did with them.
Ha! We are a bit of a team in my house and vet each other’s spending, I got this tin filled with Horadam. My family member took one look at it before I ordered it and said get it, I didn’t even have to argue for it. Such a cute box.

My thought exactly. I hope Schmincke will continue to offer this palette and hopefully also sell it empty.
I want the tin too

Thanks for sharing. I like that this tin has rolled/folded edges. So it won't cut you unnecessarily
