I started out riding the Black Hills of SD. I've done the Black hills Ultra 50 where we had to actually ride, carry or push the bike up the ski mountain. Also in 1990 almost no one had suspension.

    Regarding the title for those wondering, most places you don't need a DH bike anymore, but in some places it's nice to have a DH bike, yes enduro bikes can do anything now, but there is a big difference between riding things, and riding things without almost breaking your wrists. There are some double black diomond trials in bike parks that I have ridden on my 455mm reach, 118cm reach trail bike with 150mm suspension (I'm 188cm for reference, most brands I'm between a L and XL), and there are some blue trails that I came back from with visibly brushed and swollen hands (less orres bike park, trial is called riding red in case you wanted to know, and it s tecknicaly a red with is badialy a black trail but it leans towards the blue side if you know what I mean). In most places you will be fine with a properly set up enduro bike, but if your gonna be hitting laps of the real chunky trials it might be worth having a DH bike.

    • @kangsterizer
      @kangsterizer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      imo what really changed is that trail bikes dont really exist anymore. enduro bikes do bike park fine, and yes dh are better when its rough. and xc bikes can do all the trail stuff and light enduro lol.

    • @shemshem9998
      @shemshem9998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kangsterizer trail bikes don't exist anymore? They definatly do, just ride a 180-160 enduro and a 130-150 trail bike back to back, you can definitely notice the difference, climb faster, more nimble, and are way more playfull (in general of course). And a xc bike does not have the geo to be as playfull or capeble as a trail bike, plus your welcome to ride enduro on it, just make sure to remember the times before that ride, when your wrists did not make weird clicking noises. For example my 150mm trail bike has a 455mm reach, 66° head angle, 425mm chainstay and a 1180mm wheelbase. 170mm enduro bikes in the same size would have some where close to a 490mm reach, 64° head angle, 440mm chainstay, and a 1250mm wheelbase. Those are very different numbers, that is without even going into suspension platforms and how trail bikes linkedge is usaly designed towards giving more feedback. And a xc bike is the same case, but in the other direction. The trail bike is the literal do it all bike, I'm not taking my enduro on a xc ride, but I would take my trail bike. And I would not take my xc bike on a enduro ride, but I would take my trail bike. Its the perfect bike for those that enjoy the more mellow downhills, or a realy pakyfull and responsive bike, or just realy love flow trails.

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Downhill bikes are great if you ride bike parks a lot to keep the wear and tear off other bikes and the extra travel gives you more margin of error if something goes wrong. That being said, as a former downhill racer, i rarely recommend them unless it's going to be a second bike, or you plan to race downhill. They are fun on steep trails but are a lot of work on anything remotely flat. if you can only have one bike, enduro/trail bikes are the bees knees.

    • @shemshem9998
      @shemshem9998 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SkillsWithPhil 100%, if i had one bike i would only have a playfull trial bike, good enough for most things and about half of the bike park. id love a DH bike if i could have 3 other bikes first, otherwise i would go with a free ride/big enduro bike like the propain spindrift

      @@SkillsWithPhil Hi Phil...love your style & vids! I'm look'n for some advice on a big purchase I'm planning on make'n (Husqvarna - Extreme Cross 9). I've been out of the pedal world for over 10 years and currently ride an FE501S (Enduro/Dual Sport 249lbs Motorcycle) on black diamonds OHV trails. I found (put a deposit down) an EXC9 that should arrive this Oct., but that fact that you would "rarely recommend" a DH bike gives me reserve as you mention it's "a lot of work". Could you elaborated on that comment and try to relate it to the Husqvarna EXC9, an electric downhill bike w/ 200mils of travel, 630Wh battery, Magura brakes and an EP8 motor? I feel/want the motor to help keep me motivated, but plan on riding it everywhere and fear I'm making a costly mistake. www.husqvarna-bicycles.com/en-int/models/downhill/extreme-cross-9-2021.html (bonus advice would be to critique the EXC9 and it's stock setup as I'm not edumacated in good componentry vs bad componentry, brands, models, etc.) Thanks a million and stay safe @Skills With Phil!

    I ride DH bikes at bike park because the frames are strong AF. I have a 2015 Scott Gambler 710 with 200 park days in the Alps and Whistler, the frame has no crack. I have been 3 times in Whistler with a Norco Sight and I cracked the frame on Crank it up. DH bikes are more comfortable to ride and more reliable. I do 10-15 runs per day in Whistler/Chatel/Champery/Morgins/Morzine so it is better for me to have a suitable bike for steep trails and big jumps.

    Haven’t been to highland in a few years since my bike got stolen in college but I will say that’s always been the downfall of highland on busy summer days is that long lift line. I understand from one perspective that if they bought a new faster lift it would crate a problem of downhill issues with overcrowding on trails but on the other hand 30 mins for one run is so tough

    • @Razzy1312
      @Razzy1312 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately this is one of the issues I see with the sport. As it's popularity increases it will become far less fun. Downhill mountain bike trails are designed to be run solo and overcrowding will kill the sport. Soon you'll be waiting 1+ hours for a single run at popular bike barks and going down with 3+ people. There's no easily solution though because of the nature of these courses. Running more bikers down the trail at the same time is not a solution I want but it's probably the only one. Also I've seen a growing issue with groups sticking around certain parts of the trails (jumps especially) and doing them over and over again. They don't understand how this crowd things or don't care.

      Yes! Go to your local hardware store, they have small bolts that should fit. You want a metric bolt, but I'm not sure on the diameter off the top of my head. It cost me ~$0.55. You can take the one off the other lever and bring it with you so you can compare it. It won't look identical but that doesn't matter. It'll also be an allen instead of a torx head which is honestly simpler IMO. Also pick up some blue loctite (think it's 242). Use that on the threads. Hope that helps

      Yup! I moved to France with my parents when i was still racing bmx. It wasn't until we moved back to the states that i started mountain biking and downhill racing.

    Man that looks so fun! Riding in places like this, Whistler, Squamish and Northshore do people not worry about bears?

    Hey Phil. Are you planning on giving the new Gt a review

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't do reviews, for several reasons. As a rider who is sponsored by GT, I have an inherent bias and it wouldn't be ethical, nor would it be fair.

      I made this video a while back. There's different levels of beginner, you might be more/less experienced but this should help you get started :)
