1983 My Little Pony Gusty Vintage Toy Restoration, Cleaning & Repaint MLP G1 Hasbro Nirvana 1980s

  • This My Little Pony Gusty had great hair! The body, however, needed a little care. I cleaned it with soap, acetone and hydrogen peroxide, untangled the hair, and retouched the symbols. For the cutie marks, I used a simple glitter glue and matte protection on top. I also added some new nylon hair because it looked like the pony had lots some strands.
    NOTE: This is the first time I speak on a restoration video! Do you prefer it to be only music? Would you like me to explain the steps with voice-over too?
    Quick jump to:
    - Intro: 0:04
    - Cleaning the pony (and untangling he hair): 00:34
    - Deep cleaning with acetone and peroxide: 03:17
    - Conditioning the hair: 05:23

    I like the talking at the beginning, but for the actual restoration I prefer the text on screen. I have very mild auditory processing issues and have trouble understanding people if I can't see them talk, so having the text on screen helps me understand what's going on.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      That's good to know, thank you for letting me know! I think some people find the music more relaxing. I'm planning on doing a special series of tutorial-like videos with instructions, and maybe limit the voice to intros once in a while - explaining very shortly, for example, the story of certain toys. One thing I can definitely do (I missed the chance for this one!) is add english text on the video, like subtitles but ones you don't have to turn on (I always do subtitles in Spanish). I will actually add English for this one, that's something I can do!

    • @lennies_mindful_life

      I'm dyslexic so I cant cope too much writing that only on screen for too short of time

      I prefer yhe talking. If you need text you can put subtitles in english

      Yes I also have problems understanding some accents! But thanks for saying the info at the beginning :) gusty is one of my favorites and I’ve only seen our us version! Would it be possible to send you a pony? I have a moon dancer I got on eBay almost 20 years ago. Her hair is mostly fine, it’s just her mark that bothers me! I tried to fix it myself then (I was only 15) with nail polish and it’s been a bit sticky since then! I was afraid to try to remove it cause I didn’t want to ruin her hip.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@lennies_mindful_life Would it help if I make the text stay longer? How much longer do you think would be better? Double? It's quite easy to do so I'll be happy to try for the next video!

    being an 80s kid, seeing these restored brings me such joy. i had most of them. i never ever cut their hair. i have no idea why some kids cut the hair on their toys, barbies etc. that being said. when my niece was born, i gave her some and she destroyed them. my heart broke.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ohhh that's great that you were careful with them. I can't remember why I cut mine's mane, it sounds like an awful idea today but I gave a pony to my niece and she did the same! I hope yours can still value and care for them when she grows up! ♥️

    I love the talking at the beginning of the video! I think this format exactly is perfect, a little personal and fun but still relaxing. I have a question, where do you buy your pony hair from? Dollyhair is out of the specific shade I need for a Baby Stockings and I seem to remember you mentioning other sources in another video?

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thank you!! 😊 I buy my hair from different places but it's usually Doll Hair Emporium (UK) or Shimmer Locks (US). When I can't find the shade, I try Amazon. Hope it helps!

    This pony was in shockingly good shape compared to a lot of them her age. Most of them from this era have VERY heavy wear and tear, usually missing hair and covered in scuffs. The fact that this one survived with only what I would call standard play wear (mildly fizzed hair, minor paint loss, a few scuffs and stains) means this pony was either dearly loved, or not loved and barely played with. I hope it was the former, but at least now she'll definitely be loved in her new home, with all her new pony friends.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I couldn't believe it when I saw her. I got her from the local eBay (Mercado Libre) for a fraction of the collector's price. I had my doubts whether to upload this video because there really wasn't much to do, but I am 100% in love with that hair and I had to show it off :P I'm not usually super attached to my belongings but they'll have to pry this pony from my cold hands xD

    I love restoring ponies too, but I've never done some of the cool stuff you do. This inspired me to go back to my princess ponies (I own both complete sets) and use fabric softener and a straightening iron to help me tame their wild tinsel hair! It actually worked! They're drying right now, I'm excited to take photos of them!
    My only concern is that my Princess Pristina's hair color leaked a bit while the fabric softener was settling in their hair. It's still very vibrant so I'm not too worried, hopefully the color doesn't stain the body while the hair is wrapped up and drying! I did rinse it thoroughly before wrapping it. I didn't know hair color could leak like that!

      Hello fellow restorer! ☺️☺️ I'm so glad you could tame the tinsel, in my experience it's very very difficult to handle. I'm impressed! I hadn't heard of colour leaking before, that's a shame. I need to look into it. Thank you so much for your message!! ☺️☺️

      @@RetroGeekCrafts I think I may have gotten lucky with my princesses cause none of them were in too terrible shape when I originally got them. The tinsel doesn't look perfect again, but the improvement is very visible and that alone is satisfying!
      Luckily Princess Pristina's hair color didn't stain anything! I had noticed when I started ironing all of them that there was strange color stains all over the paper towel where she was resting. Her hair is a very bright chartreuse so I'm going to guess it's something to do with how the dye in the hair reacted to the fabric softener. Maybe if you have any ponies with that hair color (such as Surprise) you could test and see if it happens to you? I'm not sure if its the brand or quality of the fabric softener that did it lol
      EDIT: I found the answer! Apparently this specific hair color has a habit of dye leakage when in contact with moisture! Now I'm really glad Pristina didn't stain anything, I'll definitely be more cautious when handling this hair color in the future! www.mlppreservationproject.com/body.html

      @@ludicrouslunatic Ohhhh wow, thank you so much for letting me know about the leakage! I have a surprise but I rehaired her with dry hair (this was a while ago) so I didn't notice. They must add some special inks to make it that neon colour! I wonder if this is the case with new hair too, you don't really see these shades -- maybe that's why!

    I just discovered this channel and I've been binging the vids since then! I love them!
    May I ask what is the music that starts around 3'50? I know there is music credited in the description, but I was under the impression it isn't the one at this point of the vid?
    Also, well, I think I'm late for that anyway, but I prefer no speaking - it bothers me in that kind of content, and I tend to cut the sound altogether since it breaks my focus on what is going on. But if it's only at the beginning, it doesn't bother me that much.

    Just out of curiosity, why does the silicone in the shampoo benefit the ponies hair? And great video as always :)

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been trying to find a source for my claim without much luck. This is something I read a few time in restoration groups. From what I read, silicone is a plastic in itself, and it costs other materials (for example, cheap silicone shampoos make your hair shinny because it's costing it, but in the long term it dries the hair). My uninformed guess is that it fills in any missing nylon bits. I'll see if I can find more info!!

    i just love how you talked through the video i hope you talk more in your videos from now on gezz you got to gustys tail just in time you did. • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you 😊😊 Most nail polish removers are acetone-based, but I heard a few of them aren't and they won't have much effect. It should say on the bottle if it has acetone. It works well in other plastics I have tried, but I tested it on a Polly Pocket toy and it actually eroded it. It's quite a powerful solvent, definitely safe for vinyl but not necessarily for other plastics. I'm not sure which ones are "bad", but what you can do is try a little bit with a cotton bud, maybe in a n area that is not visible. If the plastic is coloured and the cotton bud gets stained with that colour, then it means it's eroding it. Does that make sense?
