  • This My Little Pony Lickety Split might look a little unfamiliar to you... the colour combination is one that only existed in Argentinian ponies! It took me a while to find the hair, it's not an exact match but it's close. For the ears, I repaired them using milliput epoxy putty and repainted them with acrylics. The colour, as you will be able to see, DID NOT match the original xD Any advice about how to "tone down" colours is welcome! The video also includes a rehair and the usual hydrogen peroxide treatment.
    Quick jump to:
    - Intro: 0:04
    - Preparing the pony (removing hair): 00:31
    - Cleaning (soap, acetone and peroxide): 01:10
    - Fixing the missing ear and the chewed one: 03:08

    - Retouching the eyes: 07:49
    - Rehairing the tail and mane: 08:42

    It's at least a very close green on the ears! The body seems to be a fairly greyish warm green, so adding a very tiny bit of red to the existing mix to dull down the green might match better.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Ohhh, red? I would have nevr thought of that. I really struggle with colour. Thank you, I will try it!

    • @Thysillia
      @Thysillia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@RetroGeekCrafts I think you got a very close match anyway, the paints are just a little more bright while the pony is a little "muddy" looking, if that makes sense. Less saturated.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@Thysillia Yes, makes absolute sense. I couldn't think of a way to desaturate the paint, I even thought of adding like... flour or something like that xD I got a long road ahead in terms of painting education lol

    • @laurenwallace8204
      @laurenwallace8204 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Color matching is very tricky especially when the paint dries a different color. Acrylic paint always seems to darken so I always mix it a lighter shade than I think I need. White lightens but it also seems to desaturate the colors. I agree with the commenters above, some more white and red would bring the ear color a bit closer to the color of the body. That being said, you still got the color so close! Once you put the mane in, it was hard to tell.

    • @Palitato
      @Palitato 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@RetroGeekCrafts I was just coming down to comments to recommend the same thing- your problem matching was that your green was far too saturated, the hue was just too bright. No matter how much white you added, it would always still be too much of a bright green. Adding the opposing color on the color wheel (in this case red) will desaturate your color and dull it down a bit.
      Conversely, if you ever need to brighten up a color, it's a lot harder... typically you have to go with neons to pump saturation up.

    It's so satisfying seeing these vintage my little ponies restored. I remember watching the original cartoon when I was little. I was a 90s kid but my mom used to borrow VHS tapes of children's shows from the library and a lot of them were from the 80s. Watching this just reminded me of that.

    hello again, comment section! on the previous video (the "ponymons" video) I asked for help identifying two MLP-style ponies I used to own: a peach-colored unicorn with a plant-themed cutie mark, and a purple earth pony with a ribbon or gift box cutie mark. I got a lot of helpful responses that eventually led me to conclude I probably had very good quality Fakies (most likely based on G1 ponies Sunset Sweety and Ribbon/Bow Tie respectively). someone on Discord suggested that the purple pony may have been a variant or factory error of Ribbon and/or Bow Tie, since Bow Tie has a lot of color variants and Ribbon's cutie mark seems to match what I remember, which sounds like a plausible theory to me.
    unfortunately this is where my search ends, unless it somehow turns out I saved the ponies from being thrown out/donated (I can't remember their exact fate because it's been years but I think and hope they were donated) and they're still in my old stuff somewhere. but that's very unlikely so I'm not getting my hopes up.
    thank you for your help, comment section!

    I know you didn’t quite match the original color for the ears, but you could’ve gotten away with it by painting the muzzle and the hooves, to bring the color to multiple places and tie it all together. Still a beautiful job, she looks so much better with that new hair and cleaner plastic!!

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you :) The camera doesn't show the difference in texture, you can really tel if the plastic has been painted over, so that's why I didn't want to "extend" the paint job. I still plan on going back to it and keep trying to improve it :)

  • @seastonesage
    @seastonesage 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hopefully you see this!
    The colour issue with the ears was because the colour was too saturated.
    If you added black, you wouldn't just darken the colour a little, you'd remove a little brightness.
    If you're interested in trying it, mix up some light grey to mix into your green and try that! It will mute the green and bring down the saturation.
    When colour matching, imagine black not as a way to make darker shades but a way to "add grey" and white isn't just lighter but "becoming pastel" these aren't colours, they're shades, so adding them removes some pigment density.
    Hope this helps 🙏

      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your message and tips! ☺️☺️ I'm still learning about colour mixing, for some reason my brain still struggles with it! But I'm practising and I am slowly feeling a little more confident :)

    Love your work! I’m dabbling in restoration as well so I have a question for you- how do you seal your paint jobs/retouches? So that the acrylic doesn’t rub off and so that it’s waterproof? I’ve been told to use Mr. Super Clear.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much! I seal the work with matte spray, Testor’s DullCote. I think you can use any type of sealant on acrylics, but the one I know works for sure is that one! I remember reading about Mr. Super Clear and I think it's a good one too!

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I depends on the damage. If the pony is in decent condition, most collectors prefer to have the original hair and no retouches. In this case, where the pony has a low value because it looks so poorly, the restoration would increase the value. Not that much, though, maybe double the price? I never sold one so I'm not sure 😊

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much!! :) You can remove the tempera paint with just water. I used a cotton bud because some of of it had gotten into the little cracks and cuts but normally warm water and rubbing with your finger gets rid of it very easily.

      That's so awesome!! The tail clamp is THE WORST, that's always my least favourite part of the restoration. I use cutting pliers - one with sharp "teeth" and the other blunt so I can pull the sides apart.
